PROPOSED COUNTY POLICE BUILDINGS…
PROPOSED COUNTY POLICE BUILD- INGS AT LLANDUDNt). The proposal to spend £ "7,000 on police buildings at Llandudno has met with a cer- tain amount of opposition. It was discussed last week at the meetings of the Carnarvon- shire County Council and the Conway Board of Guardians, in both instances re- solutions were adopted protesting' against the suggested outlay. Nevertheless, the arguments adduced in both cases appeared to be not so much against the projected building's as against their cost. The majority of the speakers, indeed, acknow- ledged that new buildings were necessary, but, on the ground that too much money was being- spent on "^ornate public build- ings," they opposed the scheme. No des- cription of the buildings was given in fact, it is doubtful whether those who took part in the discussion were aware of the nature of the proposed buildings. To the initiated it will be obvious that before the Police Committee could erect an ornate building at Llandudno for ^"7,000 they must necessarily limit their demands for 'l"?ic cost of build- 1,1,111(ILI(ItIO is exceediii,,Iy Iii-li c(-i-r,- 21 z, pared with the average town in the county. Much the same conditions govern building operations at Colwyn Bay and Llandudno, and, judging by the character of the new police buildings which the Denbighshire County Council are ereetiii- at the former resort, at a cost of £ 7,000, there need be 1; .ttle fear that the s?Anic aiiiouiit of iiion(,y will be extravagantly spent at Llandudno. Apart from that, however, Llandudno is entitled to consideration at the ban.Is of the county authorities. The town is rated to the extent of about ^"103,000 for county purposes, nearly double the amount of any other town in the shire, and it cannot be said that Llandudno has been over- generously treated by the County Council. The present inadequate and badly-ventilated police offices are, if we mistake not, the only premises in the town built at the expense of the county, and since the Police Committee have decided that suit- able buildings shall be provided," the County Council should see to it that they will be consonant with the dignity of the county and the magistracy, and also in keeping with their splendid surroundings. The ratepayers of Llandudno have built their own municipal offices, at a cost of £ 20,000, and it should not be forgotten that a large proportion of the expenditure entailed on the projected county buildings will also have to be borne by them. It would be well If the County Councils of North Wales were more sympathetic to- wards the popular resorts under their jurisdiction.

A few weeks ago the Local Government Board forwarded to the Cowlyd Water Board a communication from which it ap- peared that the Department had no know- ledge that the proprietorship of the Cowlyd Lake was vested in the Water Board. The communication caused considerable disquiet 13,iN-, b(,caL!?,e it -as feired tliit -it C( ,?tiatioiis procee(Iiii, in regir(i to the lie! the proposed extension of the water sup- ply tor the town would be thereby con- siderably delayed. Mr J. Herbert Roberts, M.P., was invited to bring his influence to bear on the matter, and he readily pro- mised to interview the President of the Local Government Board. In the ^mean- time Mr Amphlett, the clerk to the Colwyn Bav authoritv, wrote, on his own responsi- bility. a very lucid letter explaining- the position to the Department. ihe result was that on Tuesday the Colwyn Bay Urban District Council were satisfied that all the difficulties had been surmounted— thanks to the intercession qf Mr HerberU Roberts and their clerk. There is now every reason to believe that the negotiations will'be brought to a satisfactiry close at an early date, and Colwyn Bay will at length come into possession of "the extra main" so long discussed. There can be little doubt, says "The Hos- pital," that there is a real danger of the spread of suchdiseases as diphtheria and phthisis by the use of that form of tele- phone which is at present general in Lon- don and in other places in England. The speaker has to hold his mouth very close to, if not in actual contact with, the speak, ing tube—much closer than was necessary with the older instrument in which one handle held both earpiece and mouthpiece. Ouite apart from the physical necessity of sitting or standing in one particular place opposite the instrument, instead of being able to sit down comfortably in a chair and hold the speaking apparatus in any posi- tion one chose, as was formerly the case, the inferiority of the present machine from a saiiit?ir?- of view is obviot7??. III -)Iic ui"(I;ll,-S, i, busii, ess ottices, ii-i put b .1 public telephone call offices, and in similar places where numbers of different persons of all classes come and go, using the sanro machine, the present fofm of instrument is a source of danger to health, and it is the duty of medical men to have it re- medied. » • At a meeting of the Llandudno School Managers on Friday, Mr Richard Conway complained that the Carnarvonshire Edu- cation Committee discriminated between the staffing- of the provided and non- provided schools of the county. In con- firmation of his assertion he quoted statis- tics relating to the position of affairs in the Church and Council schools at Llandudno at present, and contended that the Coun- cil schools were staffed on the average, and in proportion to the number of scholars, by more than twice the number j of trained teachers that were employed in the Church schools." Mr Conway further insisted that a like policy was followed with respect to the school cleaners Mr Conway set forth his view on the matter quite clearly, and in the interests of edu- cation P-eri ?, erilly it would be well for the ratepayers to be further enlightened on this phase of county educational administra- tion. W e have had to brace ourselves up to the shock of the dearness of coal, but now the price of cheese is to be raised, too, and we are hit again on a very tender spot. Cheese plays an extraordinarily large part in the common life. It is very nutritious, a little goes a long way, and it has that important quality known in some sections of society as "tastiness." Besides its utilitarian qualities, it is the common factor between mice and men and fairy tales. How many little mice have rued their pronounced taste for cheese, what the fairy tales would have done without the chcesc that hoodwinked the giant, and the great sort of which the moon, according to the best authorities, is wholly composed, is best left to the imagination. It is rumoured, too, that owing to the increased price of cheese there is likely to be a scarcity of the best Welsh rabbits this season. II II Apropos of the disappearance of Bernard Shaw, one of his friends tells in the "Grand Magazine" an amusing story of the way the event impressed one Welsh village! A crony observed Have you heard the news, David? Bernard Shaw is They've been a-lookin' for 'e up hill an' down dale these seventeen hours, and ne sign of him can they find." Alt. um," said the other; "and who be this Bernard 'Shaw?" "Why, 'e be the great funny man from London." "Good riddance, then, says I we be 'avin' too many funny men right here wi'out grievin' for the loss of one more or less. This ain't no country- Wales ain't—for funny men." » # » Unlike many of the great preachers who have a weakness for breaking their "pub- lications," the Rev. Evan Jones, Carnar- on, is always prepared to go through fire and water rather than disappoint a congregation or break an engagement. A London correspondent states that the veteran minister made a pnthetia appeal to the Church Commis- sion to be allowed to give his evidence on Wednesday. The request was gi anted, and on Thursday morning Mr Jones was able to leave London for Barry Dock to fulfil a promise to preach at the Sassiwn" of the Corph. « A member of the St. Asaph Board of Guardians has made a sporting offer to his colleagues. He said he was ready to give the guardians a bran-new bath for the workhouse if he was allowed to have the old, worn-out one. The old bath is of solid lead, and when the guardians decided to sell it the member expressed the hope that he would be given a chance of secur- ing it. t II Mr Richard Ellis, the new Welsh librari- an of the University College of Wales. Aberystwyth, is a B.A. of Jesus College, Oxford. He has worked 011 the Bodleian staff, and is publishing a series of fac- simile reproduction of Welsh manuscripts in that library. He has aiso just finis i-l cataloguing the archives of Jesus College, and has contributed to Welsh literature- Mr Ellis is a native of Aberystwyth. One of the most striking incidents d the National Eisteddfod week at Swansea was the impromptu rendering of tref" given by Mr David Evans, the Mor- riston baritone. Favourable com, in, its were made in the press next day, and Ibese attracted the notice of Madame Potti, v- i o asked Mr Evans to come and sing at *rai;^ y Nos. He went and sang, and Ma 'anvi Patti summed up her opinion in th<» t;ie sentence, "His voice is a gift of God." II Two old fronds on the street, fock.'n^ arms, strolled slowly along, discussing various topics. Personal ones were touched upon at last, and, after exchanging family solicitudes for several moments, the iudgo asked the major "And dear old Mrs ——, your aunt? She must be rather feeble now. Tell me, how is she?" Bu:id I cr yesterday," said the major. "Buried her? Dear me, dear me! Is the good old lady dead?" "Yes, that's why we buried her," said the major. « # Golf is the modern school of oratory of at least of fluency. The Bishop of London, "M.A.P." says, was not long ago playing golf with a certain lawyer, language during the match somewhat shocked him. After the game someone asked Dr. Ingra 11 how he liked it. I am afraid," replied the bishop, "that my opponent's profession n int has undermined his sense of justice, for I over and over again heard him ask Heaven to condemn his caddie prematurely for his misdeeds." » Mr Alfred T. Davies and Mr Owen M. Edwards, of the Welsh Department of the Board of Education, have accepted the invi- tation of the committee to be the guests of the Welsh Club, London, at a dinner to be given in their honour on Thursday, the 24th inst. A small girl of five was taking a still younger sister through a lesson in history. "You must know," she said, "that in the very earliest days of the world there were only wild roaring beasts and Scotchmen!"
