ALLEGED BURGLARY AT BROS-ON-SEA.'
ALLEGED BURGLARY AT BROS-ON-SEA. COLWYN BAY MAN ARRESTED AND DISCHARGED. Information was received by the Colwyn Bay po-ace on Saturday to the effect that a boarding- iiouae at Rlios-on-Sea had been broken into, and a certain amount of money, jewellery, and other articles stolen therefrom. It appears that when xniemibere of the house- hold go.. up between seven and eignt a.m. they tounCi that an entrance had been eIiedc-d to the house by means of a window, and an investiga- tion revealed the fact that between JS8 and JBLO in gold (which had been left out on the previous nignt with a view to settling a bill next morn- ing), a valuable amethyst and gold brooch, some laaies' purees and other email articles were mdss- ing. A few hours after the matter had been, re- ported, the police arrested a Colwyn Bay labourer, named John Roberts, of Grange-road, who was eventually charged before Mr John Wiiliams with unlawfully having in hie possession two ladies' purses, a bottle of billiard tab.0 cement, and a box of chloride of potash. P.S. Jones Reee stated that as the result of certain inquiries, consequent upon information received by him from Rhos-on-Sea, he arrested Roberts at the Central Hotel, Colwyn Bay. He was taken to the police station, and, when searched, the two purses and the other articles mentioned were found on him. The articles were eventually identified by the owner where- upon Roberts was locked up. In answer to the charge Roberts said: "I found all these articles in a field at the back of some big houses in Rhos about nine o'clock this morning when I waa mushrooming. I found three purses, one of which I sold to the barman of the Cayley Arms, xuioe, for sixpence." On this evidence Sergeant Rees applied for a remand till Monday. Defendant was remanded on bail in his own recognisance in the the sum of J65. When the hearing was resumed, before Mr John Williams, on Monday, Roberts was re- presented by Mr E. E. Bono (Messrs Bone and Lucas, Colwyn Bay). He was again charged, and in reply he em- phatically declared: "I am certainly not guilty." P.S. Jonee Rees: I have no further evidence to give in this case. I cannot refute the state- ment the man made on Saturday; in fact I have some reason to believe that what he said was quite true. Mr John Williams; Then he will be dis- charged ? P.S. Jones Rees: Yes; I apply for no remand, and he will, therefore, be discharged, I take it. Mr John Williams (to Roberts): Then you are discharged. Mr E. E. Bone: There is., of course, no sufpicion upon him at all? The Chairman: That is eo. Mr Bone: Thank you. Roberts with a smile of satisfaction left the box. It should be added that up till the time of writing no information of a practical character has been received with reference to the burglary referred to, but the police are satisfied that the articles picked up by Roberts had been dropped by the offenders because they were of an in- criminating nature.
TALACRE SCHOOLS.
TALACRE SCHOOLS. DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES BY DOWAGER DUCHESS OF NEWCASTLE. IMPASSIONED APPEAL BY LADY MOSTYN. On Saturday afternoon the Dowager Duchess of Newcastle distributed prizes to the children of the Taiacro School. The school is a hand- some and imposing pile of buildings, built of the famous Gwespyr stone, and cost some £ 5000. It is situated just outside the park gates, a.nd there are at present about one hundred children on the books. The Duchess of Newcastle waa accompanied by her grand-daughter, Miss Lister- Kaye, and by fcjir Pyers and Lady Mostyn. l.he principal pnze winners were the follow- ing:— ATTENDANCE PRIZES. Girls (possible attendances 430): Annie Tra- vers, 429; M. Edith Hughes, 423; M. Edith Barnett, 420; Louaea WiLiams, 407. Infants: Frsrooes Edwards, 408; Frances Staffin, 392; Mary Williams, 389; Jinny WilLiame, 389. Boys: Willie Barnett, 425; Frank Parsons, 425; Henry Staffin, 41i; Frank Garner, 404. Junior: Teddy Barnett, 428; Ernest Parsons, 422; Herbert Hughes, 416; Robert Roberts, 397; Arthur Smith, 396. Ir £ anits: Bertie Barnett, 419; Ro- bert Williams, 414; David Hughes, 413; David W. Jones, 410. The Duchess having distributed the prizee Sir PyeiB Mostyn proposed a vote of thanks to her, which was carried amid much cheering. In reply the Duchess said she had been much interested in seeing their handsome school and the beautiful children. ADDtRElSS BY LADY MOSTYN. Lady Mostyn, in proposing a vote of thanks to the subscribers to the prize fund, etc., referred at some length to the recent vicissitudes of the school, and said they had been deprived of all grants and rate-aid against all laws, Divine or human- She continued as follows: "Sdnce July 15, 1906, Miss Emma Victoria Wood has taught in the school without any pay or support from us of any kind, and unpaid by the rates of those parents whose children attend these schools. What has moved her? Only the supreme love of her neighbours' children, as belonging to her King and Master. To all Socialists I appeal for help to provide a salary for her-to all those true and loyal Christians for whom we fought outside the Roman Catholic faith. "I appeal for help to carry on this trust school, of whatever denomination they may be, whether belonging to the Free Churches or the Church of England; and I appeal confidently, for of our 105 children, 25 belong to the diocese of St. Asaph. Of Roman Catholics we have only somewhere between 20 and 25. The balance, therefore, leaves 60 chddren, whom I will claes as belonging to the Free Church Council. On behalf of these denominations, I earnestly appeal for help to carry on the Roman Catholic Schools of St. Wiiudrede, as being a public elementary trust school belonging, with the condition of its trust, to the parish of Llanasa. "Sir Pyers and I have decided not to take the freehold of the school so generously given to us, nor to close the school, for if this school were to fall in its grave would fall Great Britain's honour. For the sake of our beloved King the trust must be kept. It is puiblic property, on which the glory of our Empire depends, for if we can burn or tear up one trust deed, then eaoh son of Great Britain may destroy as he pleases wille, leases, trusts, contracts, and even the Constitution itself will be destroyed, and no Government, no County Councils, no hospitals, no schools will be safe; no bankers will live, no solicitors will be needed. For the sake of all denominations I beg the prayers of all faith- ful Christians, whether they be in the Roman Catholic Church or out o( it, to pray for and support this school. We have all had a three years' agony in this place, and there are none of us that have not suffered cruelly, and I here include those who have opposed us, as well as ourselves, whom I now beg to thank for the stand they took, which has given proof of the splendid devotion of the parents, the honesty of my dear husband and his long patience, long Buffering and devotion to his people, even wlien the 'Father of Lies,' with his innumerable imps, were about un-oeaeintgly busy, with every con- ceivable tale of fiction against him, of which I solemnly declare him entirely innooent. But I must oeaee. I already hear the Secretary for Wales calling out that he protests against lady of title being heard, waiting with M*

COLWYN BAY PAVILION CONCERTS.
COLWYN BAY PAVILION CONCERTS. LOCAL COMPOSERS' NEW WORKS. MARIE HALL RECITAL. On Saturday evening Mr LyeU-Tavler, the ao- complished music aJ director and conductor, brought to a elobe his season at the Colwyn Bay- Pier Pa/ilion, but before his departure he had prepaj-ed a series of programmes calculated tq leave on the mind an impression which will lasfc till his return. next summer. That which was pre- sented, ;).1 Friday evening, for instance, was ex- cellent in every respect. It was full of variety, and yet every item was performed with distinct credit to himself and his fellow-artistes. The soloists were Alossrs Herbert J. Miller (celesta), Enrico Frassllll (piccolo), and Ernest Pike (tenor), cach of whom gave unqualified satisfaction. In- deed, Mr Pike was in better form than at any, concert throughout his week's engagement. His interpretation of "A Farewell" (Liddel) was par- ticularly pleasing. The orchestral pieces in- cluded the "Ruy Bias" overture, the second "Rosamunds" entr'acte, Liszt's second Hungarian Rhapsody, the "Reminiscences of a Plantation" fantasia, Bach's Gavotte in E major, Men- delssohn's Scherzo, and two selections by Mr T. J. Linekar, of Colwyn Bay—the "Luna" valse and a gavotte, entitled "Pimpernell." The last- mentioned was now given for the first time. It is a sweet little piece, very skilfully orchestrated, and admirably adapted for popular concerts. The audience were obviously delighted with it, for the cheering was loud and long, and when it is remembered that over 80 per cent. of the audi- ence were visitors it will be realised that some- thing other than patriotism or sentiment promp*' 1, the demonstration. Mr Lyell-Tayler was sp impressed with the reception accorded the work that he madel a hasty visit to the ante rooms, where he anticipated finding the composer, whom he desired to introduce to the aud* 'CO. However, Mr Linekar, with characteristic modes- ty, had sought a quiet retreat on the balcony, where, in company with his wife, he had the satisfaction of witnessing his own triumph "through an ootsider's een," as it were. Another noteworthy item was the performance by the band, on Thursday evening, of a gavotte very attractively composed and orchestrated by Miss Kenyon, a pupular music teacher of t-he Kelmscott, Coedcoch-road, Old Colwyn. The special programme performed on Saturday evening was also a signal success. The artistes were Mr James Coleman, vicar choral of Lich- field Cathedral (bass-baritone), and Mr Ulph Smith (entertainer) Mr Coleman is quite a stranger to the district, but rarely if ever has & vocalist made a more favourable first im- pression at the Pavilion. Possessing a rich, re- sonant, highly-pleasing voice of extraordinary compass, he sings with the art and feeling of the musician born, while his stage manager is strik- ingly effective. Not only did he score a de- cidd hit on Saturday evening, but throughout the week he has been thoroughly successful. Mr Coleman is not only a vocalist of sound merit, but the series of songs written by himself which he has interpreted during his visit mark him aa a oomposer of distinct ability. For instance, "Thy Knight" (dedicated to and sung by Mr Ro- bert Radford), which he gave on Monday even- ing is an uncommonly good musical setting of Mr Edward Oxenford's delightful verses. Another charming production of hia own, which was loudly applauded, is "A Posy qi Roses. In passing, local vooalists will no doubt be glad to know that Mr Coleman's compositions may be had from the City Music Publishing Coy., Lichfield. To revert to Saturday evening's concert, two members of the orchestra—Messrs Birch and Herbert J. Miller, L.R.A.M.-also rendered ex- cellent solos on the bells and pianoforte respec- tively. At intervals the orchestra performed, the "Faust" selection, the prelude to the thim — act of "Lohengrin," Liszt's first Hungarian rhapsody, the "Merry Widow" valse, the "Cavalleria Rusticana" fantasia, the "1812" over- ture, and the thema and variations from the "Third Suite in G" by Tschaikowsky. On Sunday evening Mr T. Henry Smith, the deputy-conductor, resumed his place on the leader's stand. MARIE HALL RECITAL. Miss Mnrie Hall, perhaps the only great En- glish violinist of the present day, gave a grand concert recital at the Pavilion on Monday aftet- noon. Unhappily, the entertainment had been arranged at a time when the majority of the visitors had left the town. It was therefore not to be wondered ftt that the audience which wel- comed her was not hilf so large as that to which she played to magnificently last year. Miss Hall was assisted by Miss Louie Basohe (solo pianist and accompanist) and Mr Roland Jackson (tenor). Her selections were "Concerto in E major" Op. 10 (Viouxtemps), "Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso" Op. 28 (Saint-Saens), with the following as a quintette—(a) Sara- bande" (Suker), (b) "Traumerei" (Schumann), (0) "Minuet" (Beethoven), (d) "Zephyr* (Hubay), and ie) "Ave Maria" (Schubert- Wilhelmj). Each number practically formed S test of her all-round ability as an instrumental- ist, and those who have heard this brilliant executant need scarcely be told that she fully met all the demands made upon her powers. The audience were delighted, and time after time the was enthusiastically encored. In Miss Basche, the violinist had an accomplished accom- panist, and assistant. Indeed, the magnificent reception accorded the pianist after her truly artistic rendering of Liszt's twelfth "Rhapsody'* was by no means lesa enthusiastic than that MW Hall enjoyed. Mr Roland Jackson was also tolerably successful in his vocal numbers. At the close of the concert Miss Marie Hall received an encouraging cheer as she left the Pavilion for her hotel. J {.

TALACRE SCHOOLS.
of Talacre. So be it, and let me be known tinguisher to wipe out the name of Lady Mostjn only to my dear Welsh Nonconformist and Church of England friends as 'Rhian y Ffynon;" to my English Catholic friends let me be called 'Anna Maria ap Parry ap Basingwerke/' and in the bright dawn to-day of love, and faith, hqK' and charity, please forgive my faults. 1 have to announce the glad news that the Rev. Mr Hopwood and the Bishop of St. Asaph will help us to select the hymns and arrange the re-lgioug syllabus of the school. We shaii add a strong staff of public trustees to our Parents' Com- mittee, and we are willing, on the condition of the Trust, to lease the school to the Crown, but we altogether refuse to have any test for teachers; they must be nominated by Catholics. With this one exception I can safely say we are at one with the Nonconformists' requirements, and w,ith the help of Mr Gladman's "Sohcoi Work" we hope sti.1 to keep St. Wine!flid's Roman Catholic School among the pioneer achools of the country (applause). During the afternoon musical numbers were rendered by Mise G. Miller, Miss W. Lewis Jones, Mr C. Lewis Jones, Mus.Bac., Miss 1. Millam, and Miss N. Reice, while the scholars sung a glee. At the close the children received new pennies and were presented with cakes and sweets.
