c -y- COLWYN BAY CELEBRATIONS ENTHRONEMENT OF QUEEN EMILY. DELIGHTFUL FUNCTION IN THE PIER PAVILION. FESTIVAL GENERALLY A GREAT SUCCESS, t | (By a "Pioneer" Representative). COLWYN BAY, Wednesday. We naturally associate May Day with hrii- taut sunshine, fieiids of m-ioxald green, a pro- fusion of flowers, in fact, with all that maturo oa.n provide to gladden the heart of man after the gloom of winter. Yet in more than one senso it appeared yes- terday as though the summer of 1907 was to bo ushered in undor conditions of a fair loss auspicious character. In the morning we had an abundiaince of cold rain, varied at timee with hoavy showers of hail, and tihojigh the aar cleared somewhat laAer in the day, it only served to reveal ttnowdemia in tiie dnstanoe uirder a. mantle of ■white, and the surrounding country 111 an un- lovely mood. Soon after sunset i-air. and sleet agi&in folil far a considerable period, and about eag-ht o'ciook two vivid fkusnea of lightn-ung i!lii'.irnina.tod the sky in a seaward direction, the two accompanying peals of thunder being as loud as any heard in the district for a long time. Trie proopects for to day's I/lay Day fer-ti- hero wore, therefore, distinctly unsatis- factory, and hundreds of the younger section of the population, in partaouliar,, wore conse- quently m a very unhappy frame of mind. A arrmil army of thorn had been preparing felt weeks to fittingly play their pa,rrt, as loyal Hubjeota to their obceen sovereign for the voar, Quean Emily, and this could not bo accom- plished with the necessary eclat without tho countenance of a smiling sun. As if iri answer to the unspoken petitions of fihe expectant uverafes, this rnoriri.ng brought it a doLig-htiul change. The sun chone brigfhitiy at an oarly hour, and town and coun- try presented just such an a.ppearanco as phouKt oliajractorise thom on the birthday of tl. now summer. True, the wind was metro or lees f'rorn tho north arid cold, but whil-p tihetro was sunshine little 0100 mattered so far as the cnIt.hlt3wsÙc. busy, tiroliess child was oorcotn- od. In short, we have had a May Day in the true sense of the word. Ganaraiiy speaking, this year's festival has been mucth of the aaine nature as its prc.de- oeasors. There jniave been compobitdons be- tween thceo taking part in the prooessiori the usu-al grand partade—tho route on this occa- sion being extended as fa.r as Old Colwyn—'the quaint withal prertlty specteeiLo of crowning the Queen in the Pier Pavilion, and the cus- tomary ejitarttainmonitri. While there have boon no novetl departures—and the committee would do well to consider what may be done next year to quicken the waning interest in tho oeilobr-a/taons—-the procooc'iin&a fchrougiiowt have boon exceptiLoniaJly suocesaful. There wore a few less entries in the competitions ifcliis yeax, but the fact that Old Colwyn has for the first, time te-ken pari in this oonaieo- tilan is a saurco of much gnatitioa-tion to the promoters. The omm-mumt.y ai that and of the district have liitberto had litfJc sliflce. in tiho festavai, and it is well that the (xwrtaniifc- tvo'3 on to crtoad tlie procession routo has be-on so promptly a.ppretwated. Subsequently, she came under the care of- Miss Crindley at tho Conway-road Board School, removing thence to the Higher Grade ScJiooJ some three years ago. Dark-haired and round faced, she is typical of the best favoured Wblsh children. Her Majesty was attired in a dross of ivory Orie.nta! satin made in the empire style, with a long tram, in which the crepe do chine trimrning was prettily egt off v, I' th pink chiffon taffeta and May flowers. There was an unparalleled gathering in attend- ance at the Pier Pavilion for the evening enter- tainment, over which Queen Emiiy graciously presideti. Generally speaking, this was the best of all the many excellent numbers presented from time to time in connection with ioeal May-Day festivities, under the auspices of the Higher Grade. School, and Mr G-lynno Jones is to be heartily congratulated upon so successful a con- summation of his patiant and conscientious labour. THE CHAMPION CUP WINNER. LLANDUDNO'S BRILLIANT ......CARNIVAL.
LLANDUDNO'S BRILLIANT CARNIVAL. PICTURESQUE SCENES AND CEREMONIES. A POPULAR QUEEN, INTERESTING PAGEANT AND COMPETITIONS. FULL LIST OF AWARDS. (By a "Pioneer" Representative), After an unbroken record of sixteen yecrs he May-Day carnival of the Queen of Welsh water- ing places still maintains premier position amongst similar pageants on the Welsh coast. It was in 1892 that this popular carnival was inaugurated at Llandudno, and go great was iLa succoas that it has boon repeated eve--Y year since with the greatest euccees. For this year's festival many new features were introduced, a.nd it L pleasing to note that the many change effected have add much to the popularity and pictureeqaenceo of the carnival. For eMM! years past the procession has been the cause of considerable anxiety to the pro- moters. It has been the least satisfactory at the many attractions, and at one time a proposal waa made to abandon it. This year, however, a strong Procession Committee, with Mr T. J. Jones ao th-oir leader, put forth their energies to improve thu feature of the day's events, with the result that the entrie3 liave increased by 40 per cent, and many new and interesting novelties were introduced. The inclusion of the May Queen and her retinue in the procession has conduced greatly to ita attractiveness. The method adopted in eeiecting the May Quosn created a wider and deeper interens this year than en former occasions. Miss Doris Ward, the charming twelve year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Ward, Rose Lei (assistant surveyor to the Lboidudno Urban District Council), had the proud dis- tinction of not only being Queen of the May of 1907, but the elect of the school children, whidh proves her popularity, and claims to the honour best-owed upon her. Great improvements were also effected by tho Pavilion Committee, of which Mr Alex. Taylor was the painstaking chairman. At this year's ceremony OUT Colonies were represented for the first time. The daiices, which were arranged and taught by the Misses Btreather-Booth, of West Kirby, were also of a novel character. Another creditable aciion on the part, of the committee was to purchase an the flowers, etc., for the elaborate decorationo from local trades- men. In addition to those purchased by the committee, flowers were also presented by Lady Augusta Mostyn, the Hon. MJiJ Henry Mostyn, Miss Barker (Plas Gogarth), The Birmingham Convalescent Home, and othb-e- To the M&ids of Honour the committee presented beautiful baskets of flowers. For many yeans paet each of the one hundred children taking part in the festivities were pre- sented with a new shilling by the laio Mr Joseph Broome. Much to tiho gratification of the yoangstenj the custom was again continued through the generosity of Mr John Walker, Osborne House. The children were also pre- sented with a. souvenir phonograph of tho May Queen. I Photo by W. Symmonda, Llandudno. LLANDUDNO'S MAY QUEEN I Doris Ward, aged 12 years). Two new features were this year introduced to the sports programme, viz., a trotting handi- cap (two miles), for which there were ten entries, asd a two mite flat race, which attracted six. entries, including the fawiious "Nance o'r Glyn," from tho Dinarth Hall Stud, and Mr W. M. Sever's "May Flower," which took first honoum at tbo recent Conway Horsff Show. The chair- Jn3.U of the Ooinxmttee, Mr J. Haworth, and hÍli colioagiies are to be congratulated upon (Ata progrrammo arranged. The inhabitants of the town were early astir on May morntpg, decaratiiag fheir premises with a. proiueion of bunting, etc., and as usual tho wtoboitoo Promenade was adorned with lont streamers of gay bunting and banners. Moat of the tradespeople ceased business at noon, and signs of rejoicing were evident on all hands. Sighteoens Soaked into the town by road and rau, and by on& o'clook, the hour the prooeesion was anudanood to start, the streets were thronged with people. As a. finishing touch to the I Eocne the n shone brilliantly from a clear blue sky. Never was a. May Queen crowned under more favourable circumstances than the sweet maiden who rac, crowned at Llandudno on Wednesday. Tho energetic eeeretrtry, Mr 11. W.
