Llanrwst v. Holyhead. First Round Amateur Cup. An Exciting Game Ends in a Draw. [BY "VIGILANT."] Winter weather prevailed on Saturday when these teams met on the Gwydyr Park, Llan- rwst, before a very small number of specta- tors, but what was lacking in numbers was made up by the excitement that now and again I rose to "concert pitch," as the conditions of the game changed. The Anglesey men are a splendidly built set of fellows, of tough calibre, and fleet in move- ment, and they had evidently come over to the Vale of Conway with a determination to win. Hence a very delightful display of football was seen, taking the game as a whole. The appointed referee, Mr R. Hersee, of Llandudno, was unable to turn up, and Mr W. Llewelyn Jones, Llanrwst, acted in his place. Owing to the late hour of the kick-off, it was decided to play only thirty-five minutes each way. The following were the teams:—Llanrwst: Goal, J. Finchett; backs, R. D. Richards and W. T. Jones; halves, George, D. Thomas, and R. Jones; forwards, Archie Carter, Cheetham, Humphrey Roberts, Grenville Jones, and Ned Griffiths. Holyhead: Goal, Collier; backs, Conlan and Ellis; halves, W. Taylor, W. Jones, and E. T. Evans; forwards, W. Ross, J. Rowlands, O. B. Edwards, W. Brown, and H. Brown. Llanrwst having lost the toss, kicked off towards the river goal, and the opening ex- changes were of a fairly even character. How- ever, the Anglesey men at once settled down to a splendid, businesslike method of play, against which the "poultry" could make no headway. Finchett very soon set to work, and a fine scraping shot just went wide. A rush on the Roosters' right by Cheetham and A. Carter was promptly repulsed, after which came some delightfully clean, smart, and nimble play by the whole of the Holyhead men. One movement down the field was quite electric, and the Roosters could hardly prevail against the irresistible dash of the visiting forwards. At this time there was only one team in it, and during the pressure R. D. Richards and Trevor shone brilliantly. A burst away by the Roosters caused Ellis, for once, to miss his kick, which let Cheetham in, but nothing of tangible result accrued to the homesters. Holyhead again assumed the upper hand, and played for all they were worth, and Finchett had to kick out a strong drive. Keeping up a stiff pressure by overwhelmingly clever tactics, a fine, low, long shot from the foot of Rowlands was just caught by Finchett with the tips of his fingers on the line, the force of which, coupled with the small frosty lumps on the goal-line, caused it to roll just into the net. Elated with this success, the Anglesey men played more vigorously than before, a splendid series of quick passing re- sulting in H. Brown passing timely from the left, from which O. B. Edwards scored the second goal for the visitors. Whilst all this was going on, there were some very spasmodic attempts to do something by the homesters, but their weakness was made all the more apparent by the brusque and ding-dong methods of their opponents. To the cries of "Play up, Roosters," Archie Carter made a mull of a good chance, but a moment or two afterwards redeemed his prestige by giving Collier a warm handful, which that player- neatly got away. With the exception of a sprint or two by the Roosters the Holyhead men held the whip in hand until J. Finchett got hurt for a short time through the over- flowing vigour of the visitors. He soon re- covered, however, and resumed amidst applause. A little neat burst by the "poultry" and a wide shot by Ned Griffiths brought half- time with the score: Holyhead, 2; Llanrwst, 0. With a lead of two goals, the Holyhead men went off with a swing, and Finchett had soon to handle. This incident happened to be the turning point in the merits of the game. The Roosters bucked up and went at it "hammer and tongs," Carter giving Ned Griffiths a fine pass. The visitors were now losing ground, and their brilliant display of the first half- hour of the game had practically vanished, whilst the spasmodic efforts of the Roosters had changed into more methodic gait. From an overhead kick by Grenville Jones, beauti- fully placed, Humphrey Roberts steered it, per his cranium, past Collier, to the accompani- ment of encouraging cheers by the spectators. There was now no holding the homesters for a time, for they fluttered with glee all along the line, and Archie Carter sent a beauty across to Grenville, who gave to Humphrey, the ball rebounding to Ned Griffiths, who, with great care, planted it in the net, thus making the score two goals each. This roused the visitors, who strained every nerve to get the lead, and ere long this was forthcoming. Matters were now made to hum, and Cheetham from the right angle sent in a clinking shot to Collier, who was knocked on the inner side of the net, with the ball at his feet. This levelling of matters raised the excitement to a great pitch, and the subsequent play was of a true Cup-tie character. The Roosters forced the play until they obtained a corner, and this was beauti- fully placed by Grenville. One of the Roosters sent in, and Collier held. A rush was made for Collier, during which he turned his face inside the net, and in a sitting posture nursed the ball. Everyone naturally thought that this was a fourth goal, but the referee did not allow it, but penalised the "poultry" for charging, and so the official result of the game was: Llanrwst, 3; Holyhead, 3.

Sandycroft Artillery v. Colwyn Bay. Welsh Amateur Cup—Second Round. When it became knwn that the Colwyn Bay team had been drawn against Sandycroft in the Welsh Amateur Cup competition, great excitement prevailed, and speculation was rife as to the result, and as the "Artillery Men" were an unknown quantity in the district, supporters of the Bayites were very chary as to giving their idea of the result. However, on Saturday, their curiosity was satisfied, and great was their jubilation at the success of their pets. Of the team chosen to represent the Bay, H. Hughes failed to put in an appear- ance, and the vacancy was filled by Cooper, who went centre-half, Campbell dropping to the right back position. Owing to the distance and inconvenience of trains, the Bayites were compelled to change their attire in the train, a postcard having been received warning them against a late start. They took the field before the advertised time, only to be kept waiting a quarter of an hour for the Sandycroft team to put in an appearance. Referee E. Browne Jones, of Rhyl, mar- shalled the players in the following order :— Colwyn Bay: Goal, W. E. Hughes; backs, R. Campbell and T. Jones; halves, E. Griffiths, G. Cooper, and O. E. WiHiams; forwards, T. Wellings, T. McCann (captain), W. Jones, J. Ll. Owen. Sandycroft: Goal, G. Shawcroft; backs, J. R Smith and G. Darlington; halves, R. Bellis, J. ThomaS, and A. Moulsdale; forwards, A. Humphreys, H. Beard, W. J. Bevan, F. Mol- yneux, and Morrit. The Game. Sandycroft won the toss, and McCann com- menced operations on behalf of the seasiders, who quickly pressed, the ball eventually going behind. Sandycroft now attacked, but made no impression, and the\Bay right wing pair, getting well down, looked extremely dan! ous, but offside against T. Wellings 9P<>llejj the movement. Directly after this, when placed, J. LI. Owen vraa given offside. A to Hughes proved futile, the ball being P out. Half-time: Colwyn Bay, 0; Sandycroft A., 0. On resuming, the Bay quickly pressed, could not get through. A foul against visitors close in gave the Artillery a groe, opening, but a miserable shot went miles w Wellings got away on the right, and had luck with his final attempt. Not to be de the Bayites came again, and from a „6 pass by McCann, W. Jones gave Shawcroi chance with a header. Jones placed up the field, where the Bayites were a penalty through Darlington obstruc McCann. This was not to the taste 01 Sandycroft players and spectators, an, ere referee came in for some nasty words. ct was no doubt that his decision was a corre tile one. O. E. Williams was entrusted with kick, and had no difficulty in adding No- the Bay. The game now took on a r<^ai- aspect, the most glaring offender being D If. lington, who made a running kick at W'rk.
