SIR,-I am sorry to find that two of your corres- pondents have taken up the albove subject With regard' to the one who signs himself "An English Catholic," I think that he has been misinformed when he says that residents have been, dieprivedof the services of the one English curate, and Ithat his stipend goes to keep another Welshman. As an answer to that, I may inform him ithat there is a special fund at present to raise money to keep that Welshman—up to Easter, at any raite. But whalt I should like to know is this what does "An English 'Catholic" and the person that wrote the preceding short paragraph call religon.? They seem, to try and impress the fact on us that English clergymen only should minister in St) Paul's Church. 'I dtoubit whether S,t. Paul's was built for the English. Where were the Welsh- services held. before the Welshmen removed to the Church-room? They were held at Sot. Paul's, but to oblige the English they were removed. An "English Catholic" also men- tions nationality. The. Church of Christ, my friend, is not composed of nationalities, but of individual members, and those -individual members go to make one, great body that is, the Church of Christ. I think that as Christian people, wh-elther we be Englishmen or Welsh- men, our d'uty is not to l.ook at such minor details as -the above, but to exert ourselves to the utroosit to get more and' more- to rally round the Cross of Our Saviour. The National Home-Reading Union. SIR,—Now that we are all' settling down after our 'holidays, the question is asked in many family circles and in clubs and' associations of various kinds, "How shall we spend our winter evenings?" and amusements- -of all kinds com- pete for the vote with more serious studies, may I bring' Ibefort your readers a society which combines- both sides of the question? To many students the National Home-reading Union is a. true and tried friend'; to those to whom it is -new, I would explain that its object is to guide readers in the choice -of books, so that they may at once. arrive at a knowledge of those best suited ito their needs. In order to give this useful information, 'the Union draws up book-lists on a large number of subjects, graduated in difficulty to suit all capacities. lit also publishes three magazines monthly, con- taining articles on every subject chosen; the lists and the articles being prepared with great' care -by authorities on' each subject. Besides this, tutorial help is freely given questions are answered and papers corrected at the request of any member. A summer assembly is organised yearly at some place of interest to £live the members an opportunity of a pleasant holiday, of meeting each other and the managers of the society, and of further study and help in their reading. Anybody may join the Union on payment of the small subscription which -admits to mem- bership in the different courses; but it is, gen- erally speaking, more useful and agreeable for groups of friends, clubs, etc., to join in circles of five or more members. For the- coming session, the following are a few of the subjects which have been- adopted for the special courses section:- 1. The History of England's Naval Power. 2. Celtic Literature and Folk-lore of the Brit- ish Isles. 3. Dante: "Paradiso," etc. 4. Mediaeval Italy, especially Florence. 5. Emerson and the Concord School. Colwyn Builder and Plasterer at Variance. SIR,—Just a few lines, if your space: will permit, to put first a question. I presume your report- ers will not put in your paper anything but what they hear in sworn. evidence at a court of justice. In your issue of November 6th, I read: "D. W. Roberts was called for defendant, but admitted, in cross-examination-, that the damp was d'ue to the 'fact that the walls were not thick enough for such a bleak and exposed, position." In your issue of November 13th, D. W. Roberts quotes these words, and says, "I beg to icontradiict them This is a conun- drum why, or from what cause has his opiniolll altered so quickly, or did he not unde,rs,tai-id what he said in court, or were your reporters under sti-me doubt a,s whalc he did mean at the time. Meanwhile, as a witness in the case, I may be' permitted to reply to his -further remarks. The work of cementing with pehble was done according to. specification. The cement was mixed in p-roportcion of 3 to 2 of sand and cement, according to the builder's instruc- tions, and as he wa's' finding the materials it hardly masters whether 5 to 2, as D. Roberts say- would' have been any better (or worse). The materials were mixed by experienced! men, andl used at once, 'and there Was no "abusing the cement with 'dirty aggregates' (whatever this may mean)—see D. W. Roberts." I know the-tie are many complaints where, pebble dash finish is used in exposed positions, and otherwise, but this class of work is used to hide common brick work, and make a nice outsidte appearance (for likely buyers or valtiers for mortgagees), but it is not to 'be Telied upon to keep out moisture, however good the work may appear. The terms "D. W. Roberts" uses, such as "tensile strength," "maximum of hardness," "maximum of dtensity," are to be found in any books, but experience is sounder by far, and I think the ruling erf the judge aft-er hearing the evidence was the only right one.—Yours, etc., Colwyn Bay. I now find the; cases quoted propcsed amalga- mations only, and I was mistaken in taking them- to be, sanctioned and carried out. Condition and Treatment of Rhos. SIR,-The Vicar of Rhos complains of the smells andl sewerage at law water. If this is badi now it will be much worse when the new outfall sewer is completed. Now, that the new vicar- age is finished, 'and he find's that his drawing- room windows look out upon the sewerage tanks and pumping station, the reverend gentleman no doubt regrets his earnest advocacy of the Cayley sewerag'e scheme when others were opposing it in the interest of Rhos. The vicar's letter is, to' say the least, not a good advertisement for Rhos as a health resort, and of but little- com- fort to the "boycotted" ratepayers.—Yours, etc., RESIDENT.

The Colwyn Bay Advertising Association. ,SIR,-In your report in last week's issue of the inaugural meeting of the, Colwyn Bay Town Advertisinig Association, you have, in reporting "vhe few remarks that I had to make, somewhat misrepresented me. During the course of my short address I casu- ally remarked that it was somelwhai unfortunate that none of the ImembeTs of the D-istriict Coun- cil were present, as, although the meeting in- cluded many influential Colwyn Bay gentlemen-, it would; have materially assisted 'the associa- tion had one or more members of our local Council been present to support the movement. The words used by your reporter in his sub- headline, "Conspicuous by their absence," were neither used nor inferred by myself. My supposition, that the members of the Council were as a whole unaware of the meet- ing having been called., has sinice been verified, and I should be pleased, if you would kindly make irclmown that several members' of the Council have expressed their sympathy with the movement and promised' their personal and financial support.—I am, etc., JOHN BOOTH.

Errata. SIR,-I find t'hlat in your report of the election of mayor at the Ccnway Town, Council, you stated that I Ia-id that I was the, only one lagt year who had not voted, for the election of Mr J. Porter as mayor. This is incorrect. What I said was that last year I was one of those who did not vote in favour of the vote of thank,s to the then elrir,ing mayor, because I had not 'had an opportunity üfsittinrg- under him as MaIYor, and; therefore would not vote. I was one of those who did vote for the election of Mr James Porter last yelar, and as he had ,carried out the numerous duties of the office -so- well, I this year felt khat I could not give a silent vote, but express my admiration of the way in which he had- conducted the affairs of the Council during the past year.—Yours, eitc., J. Night with the Welsh Harp at Rhyl. Interesting Meeting. RESIDENTS of Rhyl, and particularly the mem- bers of the Clwyd-stree-tl Literary Society, were privilegedi to attend one of the most successful meetings and pleasant evenings which have been held up to the present this season in Rhyl, at the Clwydi-street Schoolroom on Mon- day evening. The special feature for Ithe occa- sion. was, "A Nighlt with the Welsh Harp." The Rev S. T. Jones presided, and: the roam was crowded, there being about 200 persons present. The. Chairman, in opening iche proceedings, p "I dwelt upon t'he d:ifference-s to be denoted' be- tween the North and South Wales penillion singing, and gave a descriptive account of the Welsh harp in the time of the Druids, and the uses to which. it was put. He interestingly mentioned that the Druids accustomed1 them- selves to dance several hours together to the strains of t'he harp, and aftenwards would' sit down and sing penillion. Thall was considered their leisure, and which they would, maintain throughout the night, after dancing during 'the day. lEy the Druids it was considered! a part of their diTty to play the harp, compose the prose for singing, and sing. The programme was then proceedied with, se- lections on the Welsh harp bein'g rendered by Telynor y Berwyn. The Chairman introduced Mr W. O. Jones, of Blaenau Festiniqg, penillion. singer at sev- eral National Eisiceddfodau, as well as adjudi- cator. History of the Harp: Refutation. Mr W. O. Jones then enlrertainedi the com- pany a considerable, time by relating the history of the Welsh harp from as far back as A.D. 700. He contradicted itbe report- that the Welsh harp was first brought to Wales from Ireland, and referred historically to penillion singingj giving specimens of the Welsh sinfging and 'the different methods adopted: in North and Souni Wales. The; selections were, Captain Morgan's March, Llwyn Onn, March of heMen of Har- lech, Morfa Rhuddlan, etc. Miss Gwen Jones, of Aled House, gave a splendid rendition of the noted: Wel-sh song, "Y Deryn Pur," and this was followed iby further 'selections on the harp' by "Telynor y Berwyn." By special request IID W. 0. Jones very kindly gave an additional number of speci- mens of the penillion singing, and which were greatly appreciated, and -encored'. Young Ladies and the Harp. Mr J. M. Edwards, M.A., County School, proposed a hearty vote c.f thanks '(0< Mr W. O. Jones for his interesting lecture -and singing, al,so to Miss Gwen Jones and Miss Maggie Price, who accompanied1. Mr Jones. He said he was very much struck ithat evening wit-h the ap- parent revival of the interest in and use of the Welsh harp in Wales, and surprised that the young ladies of the present- day didl not culti- vate1 a knowledge of the instrument. He said anyone could thump away at a piano, but the Welsh harp diid not cost more than a piano. He did not think ilhat the old Welsh associations such as the harp should become unknown, and he sincerely hoped .that the young ladies of the Literary Society would consider the matter and learn the harp in ordler that they might have a meeting set apart for their entertainment next season. Mr T. D. Jones, H'igh-street, seconded! the proposition, remarking he was pleased; the Com- mittee had raised the standard of the meetings this season. The motion was carried1 with acclamation, and the pleasant evening condudeQ. The Rev S. T. Jones, pastor, will ne-xt Mon- day evening at 8-15, deliver a lecture on the well-known; hymnist, "Ann Griffiths."
