Serious Charge against Two I Colwyn Bay Men. Magisterial Proceedings. A CTKIOVS instance of how crime will come to light was heard at a special meeting of the Colwyn Bay magistrates on Wednesday morning before Mr W. P. Houghton (in the chain and Mr James Wood. Walter Appleyard, Melropole Motel, and Richard Thomas. Imperial Hotel, were charged at the instance of the L. and N. W. Railway Company, the first with stealing, and the second with accept- ing a portion of the money stolen. Mr Fenna appeared to prosecute on behalf of the company, and from his statement it appeared Miss Beeson, of Cohvyn Bay, was going to London on the 30th March last. She went to the booking office at the Cohvyn Bay Station and took a return ticket to Elision, the cost of which would be 35s 6d. She put £ 2 105 down, and the clerk instead of giving her qs 6d change, made a mistake of ios, and gave 43 6d. The lady did not discover this until she got to the piatform on the other side, when she saw Appleyard, who was in the hotel in uniform, and asked him if he would have time to go across the line to the booking cilice before the train came, whereupon he offered to go for her. She gave him her ticket and the whole of her change, so that he could put the matter right. He came back and handed her the 14s 6d proper change and her ticket, and said the clerk was very much obliged. The defendant Thomas was present at the time. The lady returned on the 1st April, and, unfortunately, lost her ticket, and some considerable correspondence took place. The lady then, in conversation with the clerk over that matter, reminded him of the circumstance of returning the 10s over change, to which he remarked he never received it. In con- sequence of this statement the clerk saw both the defendants, who denied any knowledge of it. Detective Weaver saw both the defendants, and Appleyard said he took the half-sovereign and gave half to Thomas. Mr Amphlett (of Messrs Porter and Amphlett) I said he appeared for the defendants, and had instructed them to plead guilty. Robert Henry Roberts, junior booking clerk at Colwyn Bay, said on Friday, the 30th March, he was booking passengers by the 9-58 a.m. train. He remembered issuing a third class return to Euston to a lady whom he now found was Miss Beeson. The cost of the ticket was 35s 6d, and he was given £ 2 10s. Some days after the lady came to see him with regard to the return half of her ticket, which she had lost, and in consequence of what she said about returning the over change saw Appleyard, and asked if a lady had been to him about 1 os. to which he replied "Yes she must be dotty. She never gave me anything." In reply to Mr Amphlett witness said he dis- covered the mistake when the train had gone. He told the other clerk of the matter. The particulars were not entered in the train book. The witness, in further examination, said he did not know of the matter until the lady called and told him she had sent tos back. The bench said they ought to be clear as to whether the loss was discovered by the railway clerks, or was their just intimation of it from the lady. Miss Beeson was then called, and stated she resided with her sister at Allen Mount, Colwyn Bay. On Friday, 30th March last, she booked to Euston Station, and put down £ 2 10s inpayment. The ticket was 35s 6d, and the clerk in change gave her II 4s 6d. She did not notice the mistake until she got to the platform* on the other side of the station. She there saw both defendants, who were dressed in uniform. She spoke to Appleyard, Thomas being present at the time, and asked if he would have time to go across the line, as the booking clerk had given her too much change. She handed Appleyard her ticket and the £ 1 4s 6d, and he went across the line to the booking office. He returned as the train was coming in and gave her 14s 6d and the ticket. Thomas did not go across the line. When Appleyard handed her the ticket and change, he said the booking clerk said Thank you very much." On the following Sunday she returned, and lest tbe return half of her ticket. In consequence of the loss of that she went to the station and asked the clerk if lie did not remember her, and owing to what he said he I' saw Apple-yard, who told her lie did not know anything about if Thomas also said the same. In reply to Mr Amphlett she could not account for £ 2 tos being put clown for the ticket, and that when she put down the clerk asked for TOS more. She certain!}' thought it was throwing temptation in the way of defendants. When she went to see the clerk he did not say lie had found it out by his books. He knew nothing about it. Joseph Weaver said he was a detec- tive in the service of the railway company. On Tuesday, April 17th, he came to Colwyn Bay and saw Sergeant Tippett. They both went to see Thomas, and told him that a complaint had been ma.de by a ladv that he was present when she gave the porter from the Metres- pole TOS to take to the booking-office for the clerk, present when she gave the porter from the Metres- pole TOS to take to the booking-office for the clerk, who had given her too much change. When asked if he knew anything about it defendant said he did not think he was there at the time it was so early and they seldom met that train. He then went with the sergeant to the Metropole, and saw Apple- yard, and told him lie was making enquiries about the 1 os, to which he replied that it was very rarely he met that particular train. On that morning he had a letter from the manageress to take to the I Posl-oGiceat ] 0 ("Cloc", so that he could not have been at the station for the 9-58 a.m. Witness said the lady was sure of the man as he was in uniform with the name of the hotel on, and there was no doubt he was the man that had the money. Defen- I dant then said, Well, I did have it. Thomas and I were standing on the platform, and the lady came to us. She gave me the money, £ 1. 4s (Iel, to take back to the cleric. I went across to the office and saw Mr Hughes. I changed the sovereign for two halves. I went back and gave the lady qs 6d, and kept the IOS." He told the lady the clerk was much obliged. He afterwards gave 5s to Thomas and kept 5s himself. He would not have done this except that Thomas W IMC.RII AT Ene, and it tempted him to take it. He afterwards took Apple-yard to the police-station, and the sergeant went for Thomas. They were both charged. I Appleyard said, Yes, that is right." Thomas did not reply. Mr Amphlett admitted that the defendants were guilty, but made an impressive speech on their be- half. He submitted that great temptation was placed before the men. and they had had the mis- fortune to fall. The lady, they knew, was going to London, and the, did not know when she might return. He thought the matter had been done on the impulse of the moment, and that there was no forethought. He begged the magistrates to deal with the defendants under the First Offen- ders Act, and not make hardened criminals of them. Both of the defendants pleaded guilty when formerly charged, and decided to be dealt with by I the Bench. I The magistrates retired, and after a short de- liberation returned, the Chairman saying they had fully considered the matter, and hoped it would be a lesson to the defendants. Each man was lined £ 2 and costs.

Conway Horse Show. A Bad Start and a Capital Finish. THAT great stretch of undulating greensward and desert, known as the Morfa, is a delightful rendezvous on a hot summer's day when the temperature is tropical, and t.he wind soft and balmy, but it is one of the last places in the world I care to visit in such weather as that of last Monday. A blustering north-westerly gale blew with unbated vigour across the lowlands, causing the utmost inconvenience to man and beast. A capital place for a horse show? Granted, if trams pass the ground every few minutes, but when you have to walk a distance of a mile and a half before the goal of .your ambition is reached, whilst a nasty head-wind is trying its level best to hinder your progress, and clouds of dust are trying to disturb the keeness of your vision, luckless pedestrians begin to in- quire what the horse show authorities mean by DUMPING DOWN THEIR EXHIBITION into the middle of a cold bleak plain, surrounded by sea and mountain, far from human ken. Such thoughts as these entered my head as I made my way past the workhouse and through the wooden gate on to Conway Morfa. The wind shrieked and whistled like ten thousand demons. There was scarcely a soul in sight, either fore or aft, as I walked over the spongy turf. This was not a healthy sign for a suc- cessful show. On reaching the showground proper, the scene was not inspiring. Workmen were trying to coax two canvas tents into an up- right attitude, but without much success. At last, after prolonged efforts, punctuated with adjectives of a doubtful quality, the secretary's tent was adjusted, but alas it was impossible to erect the luncheon and refreshment tent. I learnt that it had been erected once, and that a violent gale had blown it down the previous day. One of the poles was smashed in two, 'and the tent slightly damaged. After its dignity had been thus assailed so violently it apparently re- fused to lend itself to further abuse, either by the elements or anybody else, and positively would not stand up. Consequently the men GAVE IT IT AS A BAD JOB, and the refreshments were conveyed to a small budding near the showground, used by the Vol- unteer brigades when in camp. In the house adjoining, once the headquarters of the golf club, the judges and officials lunched on cold viands. Few people were about, and thev huddled to- gether lor shelter from the stormy blasts which chilled you to the marrow. Several ladies had ventured up, and their skirts flapped about dan- gerously in the wind. Singly and in couples came the horses and ponies, and towards twelve o'clock the show yard began to assume a more animated aspect. Occasionally the sun would break through the dull masses of cloud that scudded across the sky, and under the influence of a momentary Hood of sunshine the outlook would naturally look more cheerful. Away sea- wards was a splendid spectacle. Huge break- ers, their crests flecked with white foam, leaped after each other in. rapid succession, and dashed upon the shore with a sound KKSKMBLING DISTANT THUNDKK. Away on the right lay the bleak-looking Great Orme, whilst on the left towered the giant peak of Penrnaenbach, along the foot of which dashed at intervals the Irish mail trains. It was an exhilarating scene, and would have been enjoy- able but for its attendant discomforts. As the judges arrived late, it was nearly half- past twelve before business commenced. By luncheon time exactly five classes had been adju- dicated upon, and then, of course, hunger and thir-st had to be assuaged, and an adjournment was effected. But afterwards affairs briskened un. Class after class, containing some wonder- fully good horses, came up and went back again, the winners decorated with gaily-coloured cards bearing the different degrees of merit to which they were entitled. I don't profess to be a keen judge of horseflesh. I never rode one, never owned one, never sold one, never bought one, and never yearned for one. Still in my profes- sional capacity I have attended some of the best horse shows in the country, and am supposed to possess Si KFTCTKNT -il( OF OBSERVATION to tell the difference between a broken-winded cab-horse and a thoroughbred. And in my humble opinion, there were present on this occa- sion some good and some indifferent horses—• horses with splendid action and movement, horses with none at all. There were some shapely animals that lacked fire, whilst some of their more ill-looking compeers possessed the necessary quality. The roadster stallion class included the most handsome horses in the show. For instance, Julius Cæsar (the property of Air John Jones, Dinarth Hall), whose fortunes I have followed for several years past, is one of the prettiest animals of his class and a famous prize- winner to boot. Mr Evan Jones, Rhuallt, also showed a couple of beauties in this class; There was a capital collection of ponies and cobs, and here again Mr John Jozies beat his competitors hip and thigh. In judging the "heavies," the adjudicators had to keep a keen look-out for sudden movements. These unwieldy agricultural horses can wheel about as smartly as a two-months-old colt, and are as frisky as spring lambs. The way two of the judges had to skip round was highly divert- ing. It was NO KNVIAIU.K POSITION to have several insects of this kind hanging on your hank, but use is second nature, and the cool way the judges had of treating these mag- nificent creatures, whose immense hoofs, legs, -n and bodies formed such mighty symbols of power and strength, made the "man in the street" feel apprehensive. The best horse in this section was a three-year-old brown stallion belonging to Mr John Lewis's famous Garthmyl stud. Its shape, movement, and size, wlrch for a young horse was remarkable, all betokened its breeding and quality, and another year should see it competing amongst the best quality in the Metropolis, where it has already gained favour- able notice in a strong class. T understand its owner wouldn't ''part*' under a thousand guineas. Mr Lewis likewise showed the best agricultural team, and o.ther prominent prize- winner;- in these classes were the Hon. F. G. Wyun, Glynllifon; Mr Win. Hughes, Llanger- nievv: Mr E. J. Hughes, Mochdre; and last, but not least, the Penmaenmawr Urban Council,who entered a five-year-old light bay called Boxer. I am pleased to announce that Boxer WON SiCVKUAL POUNDS IN PRIZE MONEY. Perhaps the Council, after paying Boxer's out- of-pocket expenses, intend to devote the surplus towards reducing the rates And now, before I conclude, just a few re- marks of a personal nature. There are officials who can be bumptuous and brusque, and other officials who can be the pink of courtesy, espe- cially to pressmen, who on certain occasions have to follow their occupation under circum- stances the reverse of pleasant. One of the field stewards, full of his own importance and con- scious of the dignity of his high (?) oHice, ob- served me standing in the judge's ring, and asked me to retire. I explained the nature of my busi- ness, and he seemed satisfied. However, the fact that his authority, which he used pretty effectively during the afternoon, had not availed in my case seemed to have rankled within him, and some time afterwards, whilst I was in conversation wjth one of the judges, he came up, and IN INSOLENT TONES, exclaimed, "Look here, Mr Pressman, I won't have you interfering with the judges. I don't care twopence for you, so I shan't have it." With these elegant observations this great man walked away, leaving me brooding over the lamentable fact that there was at least one offi- cial whose manners didn't do him credit. I won't say any more. The gentleman in question worked hard, perhaps harder for the sake of the shov/, than many other so-called officials, and I regret that such excellent service was marred by an act of discourtesy. The president for the year was Capt Arthur Wall, of Coed Alawr Hall, Conway, Air Hugh Davies, of Gorswen, Roewen, acting as vice- president. The other officers were:—Mr I). K.
