SIR GIIRISTOPHER FURXESS on Saturday definitely declined to contest the vacant seat at York. COUNTY meetings convened by the Lord Lieutenant have been held this week at Denbigh, Colwyn Bay and Wrexham, with a view to organising a fund for the equip- ment of the Yeomanry and Volunteers going out on active service. THE opening session of the annual con- fereiice of the Miners' Federation of Great Britain was held on Monday at Cardiff. Chief Intelligence of the Week. THE Prince of Wales opened an exhibi- tion of educational appliances in the Im- perial Institute, London, on Friday, when he observed that the widening of the field of education, and the extension of the practicd teaching would probably come as a surprise to the general public. THE Duke of Connaught has arrived in Dublin, and been sworn in as a member of the Irish Privy Council. MR H. BURTON BUCKLEY, O.C., has been appointed a j,Lidge of the High Court in the place of Mr Justice North, resigned. MR BALFOUR on Tuesday evening ad- dressed two social gatherings in his con- stituency of East Manchester. Referring io the war drama, he said he knew of no war in which we had been engaged—ex- cept that resulting in American independ- ence—which had not ended triumphantly for this country, and he knew of no war which had begun triumphantly for this country. THERE is again a remarkable absence of news from the seat of war. The only sign of General Buller's presence in Natal is a despatch from Frere Camp, of Wednes- day's date, to the effect that a Transvaal telegram gives the Boer loss at Ladysmith on Saturday last as four killed and fifteen wounded while natives in his camp assert that one commando alone had 150 killed ,and waggon loads- of wounded. A recon- naissance by a portion of General Gatacre's column on Sunday night found that the Boers still hold Stormberg in strong force. The reconnoitring force at the same time succeeded in removing from the Molteno mills to the base at Sterkstroom a large quantity of meal and Hour, and in detach- ing, the vital parts of the machinery from the mills. Only an artillery duel is report- ed from Modder river. There is a suspicion that the Boers have partly withdrawn from Magersfontein. FIELD-MARSHAL LORD ROBERTS and his staff, .including Lord Kitchener, • have arrived at Cape Town on the Dunottar Castle. THE dock labourers at Dundee struck work the other day owing to a dispute as to the right of employers to engage non- tinionists. BY his will, which was in dispute, but was pronounced valid on November 27 last, the late Mr Manas.seh Gledhill, of Manchester, whose estate has now been valued at t 218,56Q gross, bequeathed £ 150,000 to various charitable institutions in Lancashire. LOUISE MASSET, a French governess, was hanged at Newgate on Tuesday morning, for the murder of her illegitimate child at Dalston Junction Station. She met her fate firmly, her last words being, "What I am about to suffer is lust, and now my conscience is clear."
