Treherbert. At Horeb (C.M.), on Tuesday evening, the 17th inst.,the members of the Eiterary Society listened to an excellent paper on the Danger of the Age," by Mr. D. J. Nicholas. The speaker pointed out that the dangers of to- day differ greatly from those of former times. With the advance of education, and the im- proved conditions of life, the church to-day was beset by great dangers brought about by a certain tendency cowards disbelief in funda- mental truths of Christianity. He pointed out that belief in the fundamentals was all important, Other dangers referred to were the irreverence shown towards the church and its work, and also the Lord's day. The chairman was Mr. Enoch Williams. We have to record this week the death of the wife of Mr. John Edwards (Grocer). Mr. and Mrs. Edwards have lived in the district for many years. Together they built up one of the largest businesses in the locality. Her remains were taken last Tuesday to be in- terred at Newcastle Emlyn, a large number of neighbours and local tradespeople jouruying with them. The chief mourners were Mr. Edwards (husband), Mr. and Mrs. Bonar (nephew and neice), Miss Edith Edwards (niece), Mr. James, Dunraven (brother), Mr. and Mrs. Edwards (Tailor), Mr. J. R. Edwards. The officiating ministers were the Rev. W. Cynon Evans and the Rev, Mr. Powell, Rector, Newcastle Emlyn. The Ebenezer Vestry was crowded last Tuesday evening on the occasion of a debate at the Young People's Society on Which is the easier to live a good life in the town, or in the country ?" Mr. Llewellyn Griffiths introduced the case for the country and Mr. D. J. Cassam npheld the claims of the town. The Rev. J. C. Jones, pastor, occupied the chair.

The Property Market. A sale of leasehold property took place at the Hawthorn Inn, Hawthorn, near Treforest, on Thursday, the 12th inst., conducted by Mr. Wm. Morgan. Trealaw. Five cottages, known as Nos. 2, 3. 4, 5 and 6, Spencer Place, Hawthorn, were put up for sale. The bidding was very spirited, and the properties were sold to Mr. Wm. Griffiths, Lawn Terrace, Tre- forest, for £480.. Messrs. E. T. Davies and Co., auction- eers, Victoria Chambers, Pentre, held a property sale at the Baglan Hotel, Tre- herbert. on Tuesday, the 24th inst., at which the whole of the properties offered were sold to Mr. T. E. Davies, Caron House, Baglan Street, Treherbert, com- prising four dwelling-houses in Jones's Terrace, Penyrenglyn, realising £ 840 and two dwelling-houses in Hopkin Street, realising L255. Messrs. Treharne and Tteharne, Pentre, were solicitors for the vendor. There was a good attendance and spirited bidding at Mr. T. Naunton Mor- gan's property sale at the Court Hotel, Blaenclydach. on the 18th inst. The house and shop, No. 74, Court Street, was knocked down to the occupier, Mr. W. Richards, butcher, for £ 606 5s., the ad- joining dwelling-houses, Nos. 75 and 76, Court Street, realising R250 and jE247 10§, respectively, the purchasers being Mr. D. A. Evans and Mr. W. Thomas. Messrs. Jones-Pughe and Davey, of Ponty- pridd, were the solicitors.

Rev. R, J. Campbell Coming to th Rhondda. Under the auspices of the Mid-Rhondda and Ferndale Progressive Theology Leagues, the Lev. R, J. Campbell, M.A.. City Temple, London, will visit Ferndale and Llwynypia, on Tuesday, December 15th next, afternoon and evening respectively.

Rhondda Naturalists' Society. Lecture at Ton. A most interesting and edifying lecture fentitiecl Liquid Air," was delivered by m"' Hampsmi. M.A., at the Work- Iften s Hall, Ton, on Wednesday, the 18tli it "'■ 1 er the auspices of'the above Society. The chair was occupied by Mr. Horace Thompson, M.E. There was an excellent attendance. The lecture was excellent attendance. The lecture was rendered especially interesting by its originality. The doctor was simple and I concise in his language, and proceeded by a series of experiments to show the prin- ciple underlying the manufacture of Liquid Air." The lecture was tlioroughlv appreciated, veined with glints of rich humour, and entirely free from technical terms.

Mysterious Death at Dinas. The dead body of a, man was seen lying close to the walls of Betliania Chapel on Tuesday morning. Some children, on their return from school at 12 o'clock, while passing the chapel over a footpath leading to the main road, saw a man in a crouching attitude. They called him and did their best to awake him, but failing to get an answer, the children ran to the nearest houses and informed the occupants, who went to the spot., and found the man to be dead. He was soon recognised as David James, known locally as Dai Penpwll." He lodged at No. 3, Concrete Houses. He was rather addicted to drink, and was last seen alive at half- past eleven o'clock on Monday night under the influence of drink, making his way home past the chapel. The foot- path is a very narrow one and very dangerous, especially at. night. There is no doubt that the deceased slipped on the narrow point of the pathway and fell down the slope above the boundary wall of the chapel. He was very badly bruised, and his neck was dislocated, the body being covered with blood. The body had lain at the spot where it was found for about twelve hours.

r I Miniature Rifle Shooting Competition. Pentre's Fine Display at Watts- town. An important rifle shooting competition was held at the Penrhys Hotel. Watts- town, on Thursday evening last, between Pentre and Wattstown. The visitors made the journey without their esteemed captain, Inspector Edwards, Ton, who was deputised by Mr. Stephen Timothy, the well-known photographer, Pentre. FACTS AND FANCIES. STEEPEST RAILWAY IN THE WORLD. What claims to be the steepest railway line in the world is that near Bozen, in the Tyrol. The Mendel railway, with a gradient of 64 in 100, and the Vesuvian with 63, have hitherto held the re- cord. But the Bozen line in its steepest part rises 70 in 100, and in other part; 66. It leads up the mountain side to Virgl Terrace, on the River Eisach. The system employed is that of the electrical wire rope, and the ascent i; made at the rate of live feet a second, or five minutes for the whole distance. An alternating-current motor of 55h.-p. supplies a current of 3.450 volts, which can be reduced to 550 volts. The car of four compartments carries thirty-two passengers.

4 Ll,200,000 DAMAGE BY BEETLE. The enormous amount of damage which must be caused by insects is illustrated by a report in the Journal of the Franklin Institute. A species of bark beetle has attacked the valuable pine forests of the Black Hills, South Dakota, and in ten years done damage to the extent of £ 1,200,000. No effectual means of arresting its destructive work has been found, but a natural remedy seems to be working itself out in a re- markable way. Not long ago a fungus was found on the trees which caused the bark to peel off. This exposed the eggs and young of the beetles, and it is hoped that in this way they will soon be exterminated. «

HOW ARE THE MIGHTY FALLEN. Probably no other king who sleeps in West- minster Abbey had a more imposing funeral than the hero of Agincourt-Hcnry V. He lies at the eastern end of the chapel of St. Edward, a very large chantry being, in accordance with his will, raised over his body. Once a magnifi- cent tomb of Purbeck marble, the figure en- riched with a head, sceptre, and other regalia, all of silver, the plates covering the body being also of silver (all were stolen during Henry VIII.'s reign), it was a source of attraction to visitors to the Abbey.

SOMETHING ABOUT TAILS. Members of the cat family seldom actually wag their tails. In this they differ from dogs, who wag their tails to shew delight. As cats can purr, they have no need to do this. A cat's tail is, however, useful as a sort of vent for super- fluous nervous energy Watch a cat stalking a bird. The tip of the animal's tail is never still; it is always curling and uncurling. When a cat walks along the top of a fence, its tail serves the same purpose as the long poles carried by tight-rope walkers. It is shifted here and there to preserve the balance of the animal. »

CONCERNING THE STARS. Some scientists, like Haeckel, maintain that the number of the stars is infinite, while others maintain that if the number were infinite the whole sky would be luminous on a clear night; and the fact that the sky never appears as one luminous disc proves conclusively that the num- > of stars must be finite. EQUINE EBICUEES. Mr. Hatmaker's Azote was the first milk-fed horse to be entered for the Derby. Birmingham, who won the St. Leger in 1830, was fed princi- pally on raw eggs, cream, and milk. Diamond Jubilee used to be given acid drops, as a more or less regular treat. Pretty Polly, in common with many other thoroughbred fillies, evinced. very early in her career, a strong predilection for watercresses, an abundant supply of which was provided for her daily. Adula, her sister. preferred leeks to anything else; Cherry Lass would leave her corn any day for a feed of mustard and cress. St. Frusquin's favourite din- ner consisted of linseed meal, either dry or made into a mash. Sceptre developed, at one period of her life. so capricious an appetite that her owner and trainer were in despair. At one time peaches tempted her, at another it was grapes, then pine- apples wiiiie on one occasion she refused, for several days together, to touch anything except celery tops from the hand of a particular j,.d," to whom she had taken a fancy. + ;—

WHY NEGROES HAVE WHITE TEETH. The general idea is that the diet and climatic conditions of the negroea are the cause of their beautiful "ivories, but some authorities dis- pute this. Thus, in some parts of Africa, when an infant has gone through the "teething" period, his mouth is rinsed out with an infusion of the leaves of a native tree possessing a con- stituent which causes the gums to shrink, so tightening the teeth. The natives living near the source of the Nile employ the roots of a pod-bearing plant to relieve toothache, while another tribe further west use an infusion of kasso seeds for the same purpose. The tooth- brush as used in this country is, of course, un- known to savages, but many of them have a most effective substitute. They use a piece of wood from certain trees which contain bene- ficial qualities. Further, this stick is free from the great objection to brushes. It can be re- newed at very frequent intervals, and is thus always fresh and wholesome—a great advantage over the toothbrush of the civilised races.

Strike at Llwynypla. Crave Outlook. Wednesday's Meetings. Horses to be Raised. Children Crying for Bread For some time past, considerable dis- satisfaction has been evinced amongst the men employed at the Glamorgan Col- lierieSj lwynypia, regarding the remunera- tion paid for working in abnormal places. Matters reached a head on Monday morning, when a. decision was arrived at ata meeting of the men held at the pit- head not to resume work pending the redressing of the alleged grievances. As a result of this decision, about 3,500 men have been rende/ed idle. The chief grievance, as indicated in the above paragraph, is the alleged action of the management in stopping certain allowances to the men who are working lnabnormal or disturbed places. With very few exceptions, there are no price lists at this colliery, .although, quite recently, and aating on the instructions "°f the Conciliation Board, Mr. Thomas Griffiths, Cymmer, as representing the owners; Mr. Llewelyn, as representing the company; lld. Messrs. Enoch Morrell and Watts Morgan, as representing the men, have been making an insepction of the seams with a view of arriving at a settlement. In the absence of any price lists, the men have been engaged on day •^ages, plus the percentages. On Saturday, it is stated, the grievances 111 respect to stopping the con." money were very pronounced, and after a num- ber of men had sought to oftain satis- faction from the management they approached the Lodge Committee with a view of calling a. mass meeting imrae diately. It was, however, found im- possible to meet their requirements that evening, and as there was no work at two of the pits on Monday, it was sug- gested that it would be convenient to meet their wishes then. On Mondav Periling, a meeting at the pit-head was held, presided over by Mr. John Hopla, with the result that the men, 1,500 in number, for whom there was work, wen- p«vailed. upon to join their confreres in Keeping out of the pit. Later in the day, a mass meeting was held at the Swimming Baths, and at this meeting Reeling ran very high. It was stated that. in some instances colliers had cnJy 3s. or 4s. left after paying their ■assistants. Some of the men threatened to endeavour to enlist the svmpathy of the workmen engaged at the Naval and "Cambrian Collieries, who are under the Carrie combine. This suggestion of a general strike at the whole of the com- Line's collieries was discountenanced by the lodge officials, who urged that mat- ters should not be further complicated L Eventually a resolution was passed that 116 work be resumed at the Glamorgan Collieries until another mass meeting wa3 held on Wednesday morning. .8een by a Press representative on Mon- day evening, Mr. Watts Morgan, the agent and secretary of the Rhondda, (No. 1) District of Miners, said that he and Mr. Tom Evans as district agents, had been under the necessity of attending to matters at the Glamorgan Collieries on several occasions since the change of Management brought about by the new combine. Unix iast week, be added, he had to meet the management with refer- ence to about 100 cases where the men -complained of being underpaid or had net received sufficient allowance in accord- ance with the practice at the collieries. The management made a bitter complaint then to the deputation that. they had reduced the amount of allowanoo because the men did not perform the same quan tity of work as formerly. Another mat- ter that had eomo up for discussion wns the notices tendered to 50 or 60 work- men to terminate their contracts at the end of this month. The management sail that they had taken this strong action because of the insufficiency of work per-1 formed by these particular men. This A r thorny question was Rot settled further than that the representatives of the owners promised to find work for the discharged men at their neighbouring collieries, the Naval or Cambrian, but would not allow them to work on the day wage system, or be dependent upon any form of allowances to make up their -wages. Matters have not been at all peace- ful. said Mr. Morgan, "and indeed the -men have been very much irritated at the .end of each pay fortnight. The chief complaint is the enormous reduction in wages which has taken place, the number of old workmen who have been given notice, and the inequality of work given to night men as compared with day men. It was stated that where, eight shifts were given the day men, the night men only worked five or six, and thus lost their :bonus turn. It might be explained that the night men work two and a half to three hours extra for the five shifts -towards the bonus turn, so that it is manifestly unfair to deprive them of this bonus if they only lost one shift through ^circumstances over which they have no control. When this point was put to the management, their reply was that it was not a question of a coliiery working day, but a purely commercial one, which was not gov vned by the colliery officials, but by the docks people." Mir. 'Leonard Llewelyn, the general manager of the collieries, when inter- viewed, dei ied that there had been any 'breach whatever in any contract since I the Glamorgan Collieries had come under i'is management, and added, Speaking generally, without having the book- before me, I say that not a single man has worked during the past fortnight after having paid his boy—at less than 'from 6s. to 7s. per day. whereas in the majority of cases the men have been paid up to 10s. per day, whilst some have learned as much as 17s. 6d. per day as .-colliel,s. Continuing, Mr. Llewelyn stated that he had been treated in an antocratic and hitherto unheard Of manner, and the only explanation that 'he could offer was that the colliers were seeking, by urging an imaginary griev ,-ance, to prejudice the mind of the gentle it an appointed by the Conciliation Bo-irl to settle the price lists of the seams at -the collieries. Wednesday Morning's Meeting. Sound Advice to Workmen. <Mr. Watts Morgan Reviews the Situation There was a crowded meeting of the "Glamorgan Colliery workmen, who are out on strike, at the Llwynypia Swimming Baths on Wednesday morning. Mr. John Hopla (chairman of the Lodge Committee) presided, and said that some <of them had very likely read Mr. Llewelyn's statement in Tuesday morn- ing's paper that as far as he could say, not having the books before him, there was no man working at the colliery below 6s., 10s., and some men earned 17s. Cd. pea- clay. They had failed to find the latter, and they were going to prove beyond doubt that there were some men who were working at Is. 6d. "er day (Shame). At a meeting of the Cambrian Colliery workmen, held on the previous night, added the Chairman, they un- animously decided that, unless their grievances were redressed, they would at once give 28 days' notice to terminate contracts (applause). Mr. Wm. John (lodge secretary) said there was a lot of rumour going abroad that they had done a very foolish thing in coming out on strike, and that if these people had their way they would show the workmen the best way out of it, aid that, instead of resorting' to strike, they would go to see Mr. Llewelyn, lay their C,s,o before him, and he would be gentle manly enough to accede to their demands (laughter). A voice: Why didn't he last week? Mr. John: He wasn't gentlemanly enough, I suppose. Proceeding, the speaker said they had to look the position full in the face. If they were going back after having made a stand, and without arriving at a satis factory settlement, their position WOull be far worse than it was before they came out. Not only would men have to go to work for Is. 6d. per day, but they would have to pay Is. 6d. per day for working (laughter). If they were going back under the old circumstances, they were going back to be made paupers of. The resolution of Monday ought to be their resolution that day, and they were not men if they were going to be turned like a weathercock with every wind I.hat blew. They had to be men of stability, ready-to abide by the consequences. They were blamed in coming out because it lia 1 been said that they were being led by youngsters. He maintained that they were men. not youngsters, men who appreciated the responsibility of their action (applause). Mr. John Hughes said that if they ha.1 resorted to unconstitutional methods in endeavouring to obtain their rights the management had also been guilty of bieaking the custom tkat had prevailed at the colliery, and all they (as workmen) asked for was that they should be dealt justly with, according to conciliatory methods. Mr. James Granville, a workman of 21 years' experience, said that never had he seen the conditions of the collier so bad as they were at the Llwynypia Oollierics and God forbid that they should be so bad in the future. It remained with them to say whether they were going to be or not. Some would sa,y that they had taken a wrong step. So far as con- stitutional lines were concerned, perhaps they had, but so for as the morality of tllBtêp was concerned they were per- fectly justified (applause). Lie therefore advised them to stick to their guns. Although, perhaps, he had no such griev arces as some of the men complained of nevertheless, he was not going to stand by and see scores of men weeping, bitterly beoause they had not the wherewithal to buy food, while their children were starving at home (applause). Human fc-eling V.'oulcl not allow that, and ho was proud to hear that tlie workmen at the neighbouring collieries were prepared to assist them in the fight. But in doing so they would be also working out their own salvation, because it was a fact that Mr. Llewelyn and his co-directors were satisfied long ago that they had the Cam- brian men under their finder-tons, and once this combine got the Llwjaiypia iiiey.- under their fingers, Mid-Rhondda was doomed. They had got into a hole, and it was their duty to come out of it honourably. If they went back on the following day and give the constitutional notices, tltey would be pushed into the lurch farther than ever. If they were going to fight, they were also going to win, and no stone would be left unturned to achieve the victory (applause). Mr. D. Watts Morgan, who was given a cordial reception, said that no one realised more than himself the great re- sponsibility which rested upon any official however humble lie may be in the South Wales Miners' Federation, in having to deal with so delicate and so acute a situation that had been created by the set of circumstances they had been dis- cussing at their meeting last Monday. It. would not be fair to himself nor to the Federation he represented if he did not at once say that he deplored very much the necessity that had compelled them to take measures of this kind in order to protect their interests and to protect their weaker brethren who were being assailed by the action taken by the management at the present juncture. A stoppage of any kind of collieries of the magnitude of the Glamorgan concern, even under the best circumstances, must be a grave matter indeed. He was not without knowing that they had gone through a most irritable and grave time from some cause or aiiothei- since the new combine had taken over the manage- ment of the collieries. He was also not without knowing that, unfortunately, the situation was not in any way relieved, but rather accelerated by the fact that work had been very irregular during the past two or three months, and the fact that inroads had been made upon their wages in the shape of the allowances being diminished or abolished to a very appreciable extent had. provoked them into taking the extreme step they had taken. Whatever their reasons were, he appealed to them not to leave their inflamed passions to have the upper hand on them. This was a serious step, and if a, fitht was to be waged, it would have to be fought by cool men. The brave men were always the cool men, and not the men who shouted (hear, hear). For that reason, and in order to go thoroughly into the question, he had arranged with Mr. Tom Richards, M.P., the general secretarv of the Federation, to be pre- sent with them and to render them every assistance in doing that which was right so far as human beings could do (applause). Mr. Morgan then asked all the men working in the Red Vein and the new seams who were affected to put up their hands, and 153 men responded. Mr. Morgan then said that the reason given for the action taken by the management was that these men were Unskilled work- men and could not do a fair day's work, but he could tell from all those who had put up their hands that they were real colliers and men of experience. Proceeding, he said that he had urged unon the management since last Easter the very unfair method taken by them in regard to the treatment meted out to the night workers. That method had been followed since, on the ground that work I was irregular in consequence of u stop wagons." If that were true, said Mr. Morgan, one would not blame them very much; but the unfairness crept in in that night workmen had not been receiving a fair division of the work that was to be got. They had not been allowed to work the same number of shifts as the day men, and he had had to call attention to the fact that for several fortnights the day workmen were allowed in some cases two or three shifts more than the night men. In answer to that Mr. Llewelyn said that they at the collieries were not responsible for that state of things, and that the matter of working by night or by day was nurely the result of the management from the Cardiff end. He urged that matters should not rest there, and that representations should be made at Cardiff that at least a, week's work should be fairly divided between the day and night workmen. This fight, said Mr. Morgan, was not a matter for Llwynynia workmen alone, but they would have to be supported by the whole strength of the Federation behind them. In conclusion, he said the management had been informed that there were seams which did not already have a price list attached to them should be worked upon a day wage, or that a proper list should be drawn up. As a final word, Mr. Morgan said that under the old regime the colliers of Llwynypia were wedded to the old system of contracting, with the result that there were several seams with- out. any nrice list, and they were now paying the penalty for that system. Mr. Tom Richards, M.P., said that lie had two objects in coming to the meet- ing. One was to find out all about the row, and the other was to show that the miners throughout the South Wales coal- field were in active sympathy and sup- port with them. He imagined that it was a long time since such a meeting had been, held at LINvyiiypia, and if the enthusiasm and zeal displayed in that meeting had, during the nast 30 years, been directed in bettering their con- ditions, they would be living under much better conditions to-day. Proceeding, Mr. Richards said that the combine was brought about, not for any philanthropic object, but to make money. If this combine exipected them to work at lower wages, the,y had very much mis- taken their men. The amalgamation was for making monev, but very little money they would make until they had given the workmen wages which would compare favourably with those paid in other parts of the coalfield (applause). The meeting then adjourned until the afternoon, pending an interview between Mr. D. Watts Morgan, Mr. T. Richards, M.P., and a. number of the workmen and Mr. L. W. Llewelyn. Afternoon Meeting. No Settlement" Reported In the afternoon, the Swimming Baths was again crowded with an audience numbering about 2,000, when the depu- tation which had waited upon Mr. Llewelyn reported the result of their interview. Mr. D. Watts Morgan, speaking in Welsh, said that he regretted that no satisfactory report could be given. They had submitted a number of proposals to i*ir. x-aeweryiT, Which were exceedingly fair and consistent with honouri but they had been rejected. Mr. Tom Richards said that the pro- posals rejected by Mr. Llewelyn were as follows; —(1) In order to ensure a, resump- tion of work at the Glamorgan Collieries, the management undertake to continue the method of f payment to the workmen in operation prior to the present owners acquiring the collieries. (2) The case of every workman who alleges that he has been underpaid during the last. six weeks shall be investigated by a joint commit- tee of owners and workmen, and any deficiency in wages proved to' be due to departure from the past custom, be paid. (3) That this joint committee shall also endeavour to define the method of pay- ment in operation before the present ownership, and continue that method until the proposed nrice lists are agreed upon, (4) All notices tendered to work- men to terminate contracts pending this investigation shall be withdrawn. Mr. Richards: said that he came there in the morning in the hope of bringing this matter to an end. There could be no denying that they had terminated their engagements in violation of agree- ment., and he had anticipated having to tell them to return to work on the following day. He had not however, been long among them before he-realised that they had real grievances, and he had also since found that the employers had some grievances as well. After reading the proposals, Mr. Llewelyn said that it would take an extremely able King's Counsel to find out what was the method in operation under the old regime at these collieries for payment of work. Still," added Mr. Richards, he said in the same breath that he had paid it,

Mr. Richards then intimated that nothing further could be done in the matter until the Executive Council met on Friday to consider the (workmen's case in all its bearings. A vote of thanks to Mr. Richards, the chairman, and the committee was moved by Mr. D. Watts Morgan, and enthu- siastically carried. A Fight with No Gloves." A mass meeting of the workmen em- ployed at the three large collieries con- trolled by the combine—Cambrian, Naval and Glamorgan—was held at Caersalem Hall, Tonypandy, on Wednesday evening. This meeting, to quote the words of the poster announcing it, was to have been a clarion call to all the workers to stamp out these evils," and it was expected that the men employed at the two pits not directly affected should demonstrate their sympathy with the Glamorgan men by also abstaining from work. Mr. Watts Morgan, however, announced in the after- noon meeting that the evening's meeting could not affect the questions at issue at the Glamorgan Colliery, as matters affect- ing the latter colliery would have to be dealt with by the. men working at that colliery alone. Nevertheless, such was the importance attached to: the meeting that, long before the advertised hour to com- mence the proceedings, the hall was more than packed, whilst outside there was a greater mass still clamouring that the meeting should be held in the open-air. Eventually, the men employed at the Glamorgan Collieries who had attended previous meetings during the day, were prevailed upon to leave the building to make place for the men of the other col- lieries, and it was agreed not to put any resolution to the meeting and to hold another mass meeting in the open-air, if possible, on Saturday afternoon. Mr. D. Watts Morgan reviewed the situation at some length, and said that as far as the Glamorgan Collieries were concerned, they would be idle at least until next Friday, but how much longer he did not know. Having regard to the attitude taken up by Mr. Llewelyn so far as the Rhondda District of Miners was concerned, all the funds belonging to that body would be exhausted until there was a recognition of the principle that men should not be forced to continue employ- ment without any security under the terms which they worked (applause). He was told 'that very likely an opportunity would be taken on this impasse to fight the men on this question. Well, if it had got to be a. fight for such a principle, then it would have to be a fight with the gloves off (applause). The combine, by making a change in the system of pay- ments, had infringed the regulations of the Conciliation Board. If they desired a change, then they should have given a month's notice or brought it to the notice of the Joint. Board (applause). Mr. W. Hopkins, secretary of the Enginemen's Association, also complained that in the mechanical department the mfrn had serious grievances which re- quired remedying. Mr'. Horses to be Raised, I Interviewed yesterday afternoon after the deputation had waited upon him with I Liie ouject Cf coTnil^ uo a sevnement, Mr. Leonard Llewelyn informed our represen- tative that he rejected the men's pro- posals because, in his opinion, they had failed to make out their case, and the only instance whore it was cited that a workman had only been earning Is. 6d. a turn had been traced to an error in calculation, and the man had been asked to collie to the office to have the matter rectified. Questioned with regard to a rumour current in the, district, that preparations were being made to raise the horses, Mr. Llewelyn said that the company intended to proceed to get the horses up from the three pits as soon as possible. Children Crying for Pood. What with the lock-out fit the Blaen- elydach Cblliery, the slack times Of the past weeks at the- Glamorgan Collier^, and the present strike at the latter, matters have reached a. very acute stage in the neighbourhood, and many families are suffering the pinch keenly. One of the workmen told our renresenta-tive on Wednesday that he knew of several families where the, children were crying for food. In Rlaenclydach the situation is extremely precarious. In one class alone in a local school, it is stated, two only of the children attending school on Wednesday morning: had had breakfasts, whilst at the Blaenclydach School, papers entitling the children to free breakfasts were9 distributed bv the headmistress. Some of the little ones were reluctant to sign the papers, but when assured that their secret would not be known to any but the teachers, they eagerly acquiesced.
