Trehafod It is with deep regret that we record the death of Mrs. J. Owens, the wite ot Mr. J. Owens, Wayne Street, who died after a brief illness on Wednesday morn- ing. Mrs. Owens had just gone through an accouchement, when she received a paralytic- stroke, which so completely prostrated her that she subsequently died from it. The interment took place on Monday at Llanfabon, leaving; Trehafod at 1 o'clock. Many friends paid their last tribute of respect by accompanying the corpse. Special services were held at the Bryn- eirw Mission Church on Sunday, when the Rev. T. M. Evans, B.A., Merthyr Vale, preached to a, fairly large congregation. The services on Monday were conducted bv the Rev. Richard Jones, vicar of St. Fagan's, Aberdare. The meetings were veirv successful. Mr David Thomas, G.T.S.C., Arfryn, is now contemplating, forming; a male voice party at Trehafod. Some rare and rich voices are to be found at Trehafod, and success should naturally follow these efforts of reviving party singing in this locality. -r--

--=- Rhondda Labour and Liberal Association. Annual Meeting. Letter from IVIabon. The annual meeting of the above Asso- ciation was held at the Washington Hotel, Porth, on Monday last, Councillor Morris Morris, Ferndale, presiding. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. The books had been audited by Councillor Morgan Wil- liams, Porth, and Councillor Edward Jones', J.P., Ton. Everything had been found correct, and all the accounts neatly anu carefully kept. The report was adopted. Mr. John Kemp, the agent, read the account of the recent registration work, a result which gave the Liberals a majo- rity of 464 over the Conservatives. The report was adopted, and the secretary was complimented upon his excellent work. Mr. Jerem^ Jones was elected presi- dent for the coming year, and Councillor Edward Jones was elected vice-president. Mr. A. Cule, Pentre, was re-elected treasurer. Councillor Morris, in relinquishing the chair, dealt upon the work of the Govern- ment, upon the number of measures passed, and also upon the important measures at present before Parliament. He urged upon them as Liberals to be patient, and support the Government, as the great measures under discussion meant a great deal of work. It was passed in the meeting that the services of Mr. Joseph Homes, the eminent lecturer, be engaged. Mr. Homes will visit each Ward in the constituency. The last visit of Mr. Homes, about seven years ago, was a very great success. A committee was also appointed to form local branches in each Ward to educate young men in Liberal and Pro- gressive principles. The following letter was received from M abon Llantwit Major, 17th October, 1908. To the Chairman of the Rhondda Labour and Liberal Association. Dear Sir,—I am really sorry that cir- cumstances over which I have no control prevent my being able to be present at the annual meeting of the Association on Monday evening. I have just discovered that the Miners' Eight Hours Bill is coming before the Grand Committee early on Monday, and in order to be present, I must return to Town as early as possible on Monday morning. I was most anxious to be with you at the annual' meeting, so that we might talk over the new situation re the miners' representatives joining the Labour Repre- sentative Committee and signing their Constitution at the next General Elec- tion, if we are spared so long, and also as to what could be done with the view for all the representatives of the Progres- sive forces in the Division to be united. I feel sure that the Rhondda Labour and Liberal veterans will be glad to know from me that the present SGovernment are pressing forward with their pro- gramme of Social Reform, and that they are about to add to their achievements that which they held to be the remedy for Unemployment. They are doubtlessly earnest in their desire to improve the lot of those that are willing and ready to work, but for whom work cannot be found. I believe that, after making effective provisions to tide over the winter, they will then provide, if it is possible to do so, a scheme by which to regulate the ups and downs of the Labour market. In fact, the war against Unemployment is a war against a whole army of evils, and it cannot be won in a single cam- paign. To find a real remedy must be a long and dogged crusade against Selfish- ness, Disunion, Ignorance, and Prejudice, and in the effort to find a solution of this diffiuclt problem they are surely deserv- ing the co-operation of every Progressive politician in the land. I must congratulate the Association on having secured Mr. John Kemp as secre- tary and him, on his able efforts in adding such a number of voters to the list, and his successful handling of the cases in the Registration Courts. Also, dear Sir, allow me to thank the Association, one and all, for the valuable aid given and the confidence placed in me in the past. Gelli Woman Poisoned. Amelia Sheppard, a charwoman, of Simon Street, Gelli, died on Wednesday as the result of carbolic acid poisoning. it is stated that the woman, who livect apart from her husband, had for the past eighteen months lived a hand-to-mouth existence.

Ton-Pesntre: On Tuesday evening, a meeting was held in connection with the Young People's Mutual Improvement Society at Bethesda (W.C.) Church, Ton. Mr. T. Millward (solicitor), president of the Society, occu- pied the chair. Miss Maggie Rees read a paper on the Rev. John G. Paton. the missionary; and Mr. Samuel Phillips a paper on the Rev. Herber Evans. Both papers were attentively listened to and much appreciated by the audience.

Ferndale. A most instructive and masterly sermon and lecture were delivered at Bethel Chapel on Wednesday afternoon and evening, the 14th inst., by Dr. K. C. Anderson, of Dundee, under the auspices of the Ferndale Progressive Theolop-v League. His discourse upon both occa- sions turned upon the great theme of modern theological controversy, the Divinity of Christ."

Tragic End of Boxing Soui: at Glyttach VeLle. Harry Bowen, a member of the Cambrian Bovs Junior Football Club Clydach Vale, died suddenly at the Clydach Yak; Hotel, the headquarters of the club, on Wednes- day evening. In a friendly conversation at "the hotel, one of the deceased's friends jocularly suggested that John Joaies, the captain of the olub, who was present, should go in for training for next Satur- day's match, whereupon Bo wen, who was very fond of boxing, suggested an ad- journment to the gymnasium to spar with a view of getting Jones into condition. Jones immediately accepted the offer, and both men had a set to. In the second round deceased fell twice, and upon re- gaining his feet he declined to continue, remarking that he would have no more," and he took off the gloves. Shortly after he became sick and very ill, and Dr. Gabe oones was summoned, but before he arrived the young man expired. It appears that the deceased had been in indifferent health of late, and had some months ago been treated at the Cardiff Infirmary for rheumatic fever. Inspector Hole, who has investigated the matter. says 'both men went out to exercise in a perfectly friendly spirit, and he had no reason to think that there had been any foul play. A post-mortem examination has been ordered.

Tonypandy. The harvest thanksgiving services in connection with the English Congrega- tional Church were held on Sunday last. The Rev. E. Walter Thomas pastor) preached powerful and impressive sermons to appreciative congregations. The sacred edifice, in the evening, was crowded to excess, despite the inclement weather. The church was beautifully decorated by the lady members for the occasion. The choir rendered special hymns and anthems throughout the day, and acquitted them- j selves in their usual praiseworthy style, under the able leadership of Mr. George Symonds. On Monday evening, the usual harvest home tea was held. Amusements. Hippodrome, Tonypandy. There is a, rattling good programme at the Hinno this week. The varieties in- clude Charlie Goodman's company of comedians, in laughable sketches, which produce one long series of side-splitting laughter. Harry Ashby, a rare comedian of the old school, is also on the bill. Harry lets you into secrets of matrimony which are stupendous as they are funny. No woman who values "points" should miss seeing and hearing, him. Slater and Neal, the men in black and white, or the topsy-turvy pair, are also a smart duo. Tixeir patter is of a very entertaining character, while they can trip the light" with splendid effect. Belle Harcourt, a very pleasant singer and comedienne; and Tom Cowley, the Eton boy who talks, sings and thinks in girls, is, also a very smart turn. Among the pictures, pro- minence must be given to those depicting the King and M. Le President Fallieres attending the Franco-British Exhibition, and a tour round the White City. They convey a splendid idea, of this gigantic enterprise. Palace, Porth. The top of the programme at the Palace this week are four lady acrobatic dancers styling themselves the Four Amaranths. An exceedingly clever turn, they receive quite an ovation. The dancing feats they perform are exceptionally fine. Next in point of order are two very clever clog and big boot dancers, Macintosh and Koyal, winners of several prizes, and also of a jewelled belt and silver shield. Martin Henderson, the blind genius," is simply astonishing. His playing is beautiful, especially that of the overture, Light Cavalry." He is well applauded and encored. Harry Edson, with his marvel- lous dogs, make an excellent turn. His dogs display years of patient training, and their accomplishments must be seen to be believed. Mdlle. Renee, a very beau- tiful artiste, in a drawing room scena, is also a treat. The Sisters Herbert are very pretty and dainty dancers, and un- commonly good singers; while Millie Howell is a very refined and most capable character artiste, and sings some good songs. Bert Terrell, the famous Dutch comedian and vocalist, is worthy of com- ment, his singing being quite a, treat. The Palascope Pictures are peculiarly funny, and create lots of laughter. Tivoli, Pentm.- Anyone desirous of spending a couple of happy hours in order to counteract the effects of the gloomy weather, should certainly visit the Tiv." this week. The bill of fare provided is par excellence, and crowded houses should be the order of the week. Conn and Conrad, in their o di'gling sketch, are the stars of the bill, and the "Fun on a Barber's Pole is well received by the audience. Miss Nell Cotter pays a return visit to Pentre, and her My old man is a Cop takes as well as ever it did. Roars of laughter greeted Sid Bandon, who appeared upon the stage with what may be termed an abandoned baby." Sid's turn reminds one of the experience which befell the merry little Welshman" who went to London and met the widw fach lan" III the train. His Butcher's song is ^ell worth listening to, its originality ?eing great. The Yorkshire element was introduced in true style by Rawson and Bertram, in their sketch, A Matinee Idol." Comical, yet with a pathetic homely finish, the sketch was well acted, and portpaye4 human nature in its ful- ness. Illness prevented the Bros. Durant putting in their appearance, but a delight- ful turn is substituted by the Daring Sailor." Undoubtedly the smartest pair of dancers seen for some time at Pentre are the Twin Bros. Dean, who execute their turn in a faultless manner. The Miltons, skating comedians, are unique in their performnaoe upon rollers." Beauti- ful instrumental music is supplied by Leg Trippelos, their selections being novel and popular. The indispensable Tivoliscope shows a new and amusing set, of pictures, which are bound to create applause from the most pessimistic audience. Workmen's Hall, Ton. For the especial benefit of those who have not been able to visit the White City, Mr. Wilt Stone presents A Visit to the Franco-British Exhibition at the Workmen's Hall, Ton, during this week. The series of pictures are really lifelike, being truly portrayed and splendidly arranged. This week's programme should not be missed. Theatre Royal, Tcisyparsdy. Home, Sweet Home," the play now being produced at the Theatre Royal, Tonypandy. by Messrs. Green and Hinton's company, is meeting with well-deserved success. The company is a strong one of capable artistes, who effectively bring out the points of the play. The incidents centre round Joan (Miss Lydia Audrie), the daughter of the Duke of An caster (Mr. 0. Clifford). "J oan" is supposed to have perished when an infant with her mother in a wreck at sea, but having been rescued by an old fisherman, was brought up by him as his adopted daughter, and later married his son, Stephen Armitage" (Mr. Arthur Hinton). Events lead up to the discovery of "Joan," and she leaves her husband and child to return to her father's place. She is led to believe they are well provided for, but on the discovery of the duplicity of the villain of the piece, Lucas Lyle" (Mr. David Beatie), and the illness of her little daughter Dora," (little Hilda Yokes), leaves her splendid surroundings to return to her cottage home. The play is one of intense interest and well worth a visit. Next, week, a, stirring melodrama, of circus and sporting life, The Way of the World," by G. Howard Watson and J. P. Sheen, will be presented at the above theatre. Opera House, Treherbert. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday last, Mr. T. Morton Powell's company presented the great dramatic novelty, Greed of Gold." It was intensely popular, and each night was played before a crowded house. Mr. James Jarrett nlayed Tom, the Dumb Man." On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Mr. Frank M. Thorne's No. 1 Company will nresent the great human drama, The Woman Pays." It tells a powerful story of a Devonshire fisherman, his wife, and his friend. It is an excellent play, full of pathos and comedy, written on the human passions, well digested in the scenes, set down with as much modesty as cunning, which holds, as 'twere, the mirror up to nature. Next week, the boards will be occupied b^ Kimberley, Green, and Hinton's com- pany, which will present Home, Sweet Home and East Lynne." This com- pany is the same which presented The Power of the King" with huge success some time ago. Cardiff Empire. The sensational racing drama, The Futurity Winner," will be seen at Cardiff Empire next week. America's greatest producer, Joseph Hart, is responsible for it, and Keith's famous start, Kingsley Benedict, with his boyish, breezy, en- gaging style of acting, will play the prin- cipal part, one (T'om Chambers," a. jockey. Three thoroughbred racehorses figure in the act, and are shown in action when Tom rides one of them to victory. The climax, which it would be unfair to reveal, is reached when the horse race is on. It is of the wonderfully exciting order, and never fails to bring the audi- ence to its feet. The Dumond Trio, Terry and Lambert, Herr Dubois and his Baboons, Harry Bedford, H. M. Hemsley, Gus Le Clerq, Ida Kathrena, and Lottie 'Govell are others on the bill. Clarence Theatre, Pontypridd. On Monday last, Mr. Gilbert Payne introduced his well-known company in The ixoneymoon," which is described as a, mammoth medley of mirth and music manufactured to make mankind merrier." It is a good, strong, all-round company which Mr. Payne has gathered around him, and from the rise to the fall of the curtain there is not one dull moment. It would be invidious to individualise suffice to say the show goes with a, vim, and it is hard to say which derives most pleasure —the amused or the amusers.

Mabon and his Critics. To. the Editor of the "Rhondda Leader." Sir,—In your issue dated the 10th inst.. I was somewhat startled to find that some- one styled" Ap Cadwgan had the audacity to classify Mabon as a Socialist. As I am personally an ardent supporter of the Liberal cause, I fully expected Mabon would have soon silenced his critic, but have scanned your last issue in vain, I therefore take Mabon's silence as con- firmation of Ap's accusation, other- wise, if facts were not as stated, Mabon would have had the courage to reply.
