TALFBONr AGRICULTURA L SOCIETY. REMARKABLY SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION. The Talybont and North Cardiganshire Agri- cultural and Horticultural Society has only been in existence four years, but tile show which they held last Wednesday would have done credit to asocie-y twenty years old. The inhabitants of Talybont take a keen aud intelligent interest in the Society and their efforts are well supported by p>.cp! living; immediately around. The show is making wonder ful progress. Last Wednesday the entries numbered about 550, showing an increase of over half a hundred on last year. What was more satisfactory still, however, was the extmordinalY good quality of the exhibits in practically aU the sections. Fortune smiles on the Society in yet another direction. It is in the flourishing financial position. They had a balance in hand from last year of j6149 and this year an additional sum of £115 has been received in subscriptions" The unique success of the Society is due in ro email Pleasure to Mr Pryse P Pryse, the chairman of Committee. Oulsido of committee he has worked hard and thoroughly and in committer there has not been a more regular attendant dur- ing the past four years. In fact, he is the back- bone of the Society. His inderatigability has in- fused life into every official and into every member of the Committee, who one and all are deserving of special commendation, particularly Mr J T Moigan, theresurer, Mr William Morris, and Captain Howell, bon secretaries, and the patient and courteous secretary, Mr W R Alorgau. On the previous day the weather was squally and wet and there was every appearance of unpropitious weather for the show, but Wednesday morning opened bright and fine and the wind had consider- ably abated. Except for one or two short showers, the weather continued favourable chroughuut the day. The attendance, as a result, was very large, there being a plethora of conveyances crowded with people from Aberystwyth alone. Practically all the people of Talybont and district were present and they gave a definite proof of the interest they took in the show by paying fcr admission and not acting as the inhabitants usually do at local shows, that is, striving to sneak in or obtain a free view from adjoining fields. Amongst those present was Mr Vaughan Davies, M, P. The Talybont Brass Band, under the conductor- ship of Mr J J Hughes, gave selections of music during the day. The president this year was Sir Pryse Pryse, Bart., and the vice-presidents were Messrs Pryse P Pryse, R C Richardes, D Howeli, R H Rees, and J. Francis. The members of the Committee were — Air Pryse P Pryse (chairman), Dr James (vice- chairman), Mr J T Alorgan (treasurer), Mr William Morris and Captain Howell (honorary secretaries), Messrs J Al Williams, J B Morgan, H Seymour; Davies, R James, E J Williams, J Joseph, John James, R D Jenkins, J Edwards, D Jenkins, D Owens, R Jenkins, W R Jones, J Jon s, J Roberts, J R James, James Richards, Richard Phillips, Richard Jones, John Richards, J Griffiths, and D Davies. The stewards were Dr James Captain Howell Messrs James Richards, Rhiwlas W. Richards, Cefnhendre J. B. Morgan, Glanfraed D. Owen, Bert-.lwyd Abraham Davies, Tyngarth David "enkins, Cerrigeara.jau Richard Thomas, Brys- gaga J. James. Caergywydd R. Jones, Ta'ybont;; J Joseph, Gogerddan ;J T Alorgan, MaeTewydd James Thomas, Glanclettwr. The judges were—for draught horses* Mr E Hughes and Captain Webley P Pryse light horses, Mr J Anthony and Rev H Ivor James Welsh cattle and Welsh sheep, Alessrs E Evans, Alar, mynach, and L Williams- Abeimaide cattle of any other breed aad sheep of any other breed, Alessrs Edward Hughes, Aberfrydlan, and J C Carrp.thers, Alachynlleth shearing, Messrs W Jones, Pennont- bren, and D Edwards, Dolfawr roots and grain, Alessrs Pryse P Pryse and R C Richardes butter, Mrs Pryse P Pryse and Miss Davies, Fridd garden produce, Mtssrs Viery and Thomas jump- ing competition, Messrs Pryse P Pryse, R C Richardes, and Captain W P Pryse. Last year the show of horses was highly praised, but this year there was a still better exhibition. The entries were more numerous and the exhIbit. were almost without exception well-bred animals. The draught horses were the shining lights. Mr J M Williams, Brynbwl, won the first prize for a draught mare and foal. The foal was by Mr Williams's own shire horse, Sir Dart," and the a l'mal was greatly admired. The class for d 'aught mares or geldings was very good, but side uoies weie prevalent in some of the exhibits. j In this class, in which there were ten exhibits; the mare which won the first prize at the Alach- ynlleth show was not even commended. Air Jen- kiDs, Cerrigcjranau, woo the first prize and he also won the premier prize for the bess pair d draught horses, Mr E J Williams, Cynnullm iwr, taking the second prize in the latter cla:cs. Tne other three exhibits were stated by the judges nnt to be quite sound. The class for two-year-old draught colts or fillies was a strong one, there being ten entries and the three animals who won the prizes were spoken highly of by the judges who said they were very useful horses. The first prize was taken by Pryse Pryse, Bart.; the second by Mr James, Brynllys; and the third by Air E J Williams, Cyn- nullmawr. There was a good number of entries for the best yearling draugm colt or filly. The ex- hibits were of exceptional quality, the judges stating that they reflected the highest credit upon the district. There was keen competition in the classes for cob, mares, and foals under fifteen hands, roadster mares and foals fifteen hands and over, two-year-old hackney C:1ltS or fillies, yearling hackney colts or fillies, and the animate, taking them on the whole, were in splendid condition. Special pra.ise was bestowed by the judges on the class for the best-actioned mare or gelding under fourteen hands. There were niue entries and the first prize was awarded to a pretty chestnut pony owned by Mr Jenkins, Cerrigcarranau, whilst Mr Morris, Brynowen, took the second prize. The class for mountain ponies twelve hands and under won encomiums all rouud. Miss AI. E. Williams, Brynbwl, took the first prize with a beautiful roan, and Mr Evans, Goetre, was second. The ebiss for the best pony under thirteen hands foaled in 1S9S drew fourteen entries, and the class for thp best ponv and foal under thirteen hands eleven entries. In the former Mr W. Evans. Bryngryffty, won the first prize, and in the latter Mr R. H. Rees, Wood- lands, took premier honours. Although the ertriej were not as numerous as in other classes, the class for the best pony under thirteen hands foaled in 1S97 was splendidly contested. Excepting one tl seven exhibits were good animals, Mr Griffithf, Dolcletu^r, taking the first priz-i. There were thirteen entries in the class for the best foal by Alark Eaton. The latter was brought to the dis- trict for the benefit of his tenants f "d others by Mr Pryse P. Pryse. The number ef entries exceeded all expectations and the quality of the exhibits was very high. Mr Griffiths, Dolgau, won the first prize, and Mr Evans, Tanllan, second. Unfortun- ately the horse-leaping competitions did not attract many entries, there being only one entry in the local competition and two in the open. Mr Jenkins, Henhafod, won both first prizes, his success against Dr Davies's horse in the open event being greeted with vociferous cheering. The black cattle last year were considered to be. by far better than those exhibited in any other show in North Wales. This year, although the quality was exceptionally good, the exhibits could not be sid to be up to last year. The bull calves were the best class, Air Jenkins, Henhafod, taking the first prize. The first prize for the best bull was won by Mr Phillips, Llwynglas, with a magnificent animal and Mr Howell, Nantcellanfawr, was awarded the second prize. Mr James, Brynllys, won the first prizs for the best cow in milk or calf with a fine animal and Mr Howell made a good second. In the class for the best two-year-old heifers, Mr Howell won both the first and third prizes and Mr Jenkins, Henhafod, was second. There were thirteen entries in the class for yearling- heifers and here again Mr Howell took the premier honours, whilst Mr Jones, Elgar, won the second prize. Mr John Jones, Ynyshir, won the first prize for the best pair of two-year old steers with the animals which were awarded the first prizes at the Machynlleth and Dolgelley shows. Mr James, Abercwmdole, won the first prize for the best pair of yearling steers out of six competitors. There was a distinct and pronounced improvement in the classes for cattle of any other breed. A very close contest for the best bull resulted in favour of Mr Bonsall, Fronfraith, Mr James, Peithyll, taking the second prize. Mr James followed up this success by winning the first prize for the best yearling bull with the same animal. There was likewise a keen competition in the class for bull calves. Mr Bonsall, Fronfraith, again took first prize Dr James was adjudged second and Mr Parry, Tyllwyd, third. The classes tor cows in milk or calf, yearling heifers, heifer calves, at- tracted a large number of entries and the exhibits were of very good quality. The class for two- year-old heifers was disappointing, although there were eight entries. The yearling steers shown by Mr Bonsall were remarkably-fine animals and they took the first prize and the steers shown by Mr James, Peithyll, won the second prize, The ex- hibirs of cows by cottagers numbered five and they were an in very good condition. Mr J E ones, Comminscoch, won the first prize, and Mr Evans, smith, Penrhyncoch, the second prize. The entries in Welsh sheep, uplands and low- lands, were very numerous, being largely in excess of last year. The rams in the upland section were not up to what might have been expected from the district. The ram by Mr Dd. James, Cefncoch, which won the first prize was, however, a very fine animal. Ram lambs were a rather indifferent lot, but the majority of the ewes, yearling ewes, and ewe lambs exhibited were of superb quality. There was also a great improvement in the classes for two vear-old aud three-year-old wethers. In the low lunds section rams were of a better quality than in the highlands section. Mr Jones, Ynyshir, won the first and second prizes for the best yearling ram. There was likewise a good exhibition of ewes. Air Jones, Ynyshir, here again won two first prizes, and he also won first prize for ewe lambs. The exhibits in sheep of any other breed were in prime condition. The ram of Air William Rowlands, Aberystwyth, which took the first prize, was an animal which it would be hard to beat m any county anr-w. Theie were nine entries in the shearing class and ti -spirited contest was witnessed. The entries in roots and gra-n were more numerom than last year nd tUs was also the case with garden produce, which is rapidly becoming a feature of the show. There were as many as fifteen entries for the rrizes in butter. HORSES. Draught mare or foal—1, J M Williams, Brynbwl; 2. D Jenkiuv, Cerrigcaranau; 3, Joseph l'arrv lyllwyd Farm. ...-__--A MODERN BOY.
A MODERN BOY. Amnri t!)J pr'som rs on temand that shou'd have appeared at a London Po"c",C.}urt, on Monday, be- fore Mr Plowdi-m, was the adventurous little paper boy, William Dootmn, who, in reply to the charge last week of being found sleepin; in a van at Sy C-inden Town, told the Magistrate that, owing to toe unkind treatment of his step- mother. he left P.'ackpoo!, his I.DXlle place, and ] \/ith the mouey he u-iJ "oy s -.lling pipers, came M London in the hope that by selling papers here be would be ab'e to ge- lodgings and ke< p him- self, He Wit remanded to the Workhouse at St. Paneras, so that it mir¡!Jt ba ascertained what could be done on his beba'f.—Air Muxey, the school bo'.rd officer who found the, boy, now reported that durtig the remand the boy had escaped from the Workhouse by slipping down a shooc feet long, cli.nbing on to a wall, and jumping a distance of fifteen feet into the street. It sa-med that he was iett with other boys under the charge of an inmate of the ,-VorL- iiouse, and ne got one of the other boys no engage the attendant's atueution while he ecuaped of the window. This, said the officer, wai th? third lad who had escaped from the Workhouse, It. was impossible to say what had become of the lad.—Air Plowden humorously remarksd that the lad evi- dently had a great future before him. He was sorry, however, that he bad run away, as a gentle- man, who had been struck by the report of the proceedings last week, had expressed his willing- ness to give him an excellent start ii; life. In fact, added his Worship, he himself thought he a future Dick Whittington, but now, alas he found he was a future Jack Siieppard. It was mentioned that several societies had offered to give the lad a start, and, further, that he came to London from Blackpool without piying his fare,—Air Plowden said he war, prepired to hear anything now.—Here the matter terminated.
WELSH INDUSTRIES EXHIBITION.
WELSH INDUSTRIES EXHIBITION. An exhibition for the purpose of developing Welsh industries was opened on Friday in the Town Hall, Welshpo: 1, by the Countess of Powis, who has prominently identified herself with the movement. The Mayor (Councillor D. Jones) presided at the openmg ceremony and was supported by the Earl and Countess of Powis, Mr A. C. Hiuaphreys-Owen, M.P., Colonel Pryce Jones, M.P., Sir W. W. Wynn, Captain Mytton, Mr Remington Wilson, to.—Sir Watkin Williams Wynn explained Jie object of the association and said if the exhibition had the effect of showing the workers of Aloct- gomeryshire the quality of goods which were likely to meet a ready sale the object of the promoters would have been gained.—Lady Powis then declared the exhibition open and wished it every success. Mr Humphreys-Owen, M.P., in proposing a vote of thanks to the Countess of Powis, said their thanks were due to her Ladyship not only for coming there that day but also for the work she and other members of the executive committee had done in preparing for it and making it so successful. (Applause.) For his own part, he was glad to see so very extensive a collection of articles of home produce there, and also to know that they had received the approbation of very good judges. It; seemed to him that the workers of Montgomeryshire had a very good opportunity befo.e them now of producing a special class of goods which carried ou the face of them the mark of the individual intelligence and artistic sense of the worker. He felt that not only commercially but socially the difference of taste and the difference of skill would bring about an extremely valuable improvement in their daily life, and he might venture to say, speaking on behalf of the educational institutions with which he had something to do, that it waa their great 9-i to make the school net merely literary nurseries, but also to make the hand and eye of the pupil to move together. (Hear, hear.) —Colonel Pryce Jones, M.P., in seconding, said he had a. great deal of misgiving as to the success of the proposed exhibition, and it was a pleasant and agreeable surprise to him to find that Montgomery- shire could produce the excellent exhibition they saw before them. (Applause.) He hoped now that the industrial classes had responded so spontaneously to the call of Lady Powis, that the public in Montgomeryshire would, by practical support, aid the industries represented there that day. (Hear, hear, and applause.)— The motion having been heartily carried. Lord Powis appropriately responded and incidentally announced that tne Board of Trade had granted an order for the construction of the Llanfair railway. It was a happy thing, he remarked, that just as they were making all attempt to revive the industries of the county, they should receive the news that the Government and the Treasury had come to their assistance by helping them to start a railway which would penetrate into the centre ot the county. (Applause.) There was a fairly good exhibit of rough tweeds, but the fault usually found with Welsh tweedsjthat they are not sufficiently diverisfied in colour and pattern was observable in some cases. The judge, Mr J. Meyrick Jones, J.P. (Dolgelley), recomme nded the small makers to go in for the Caen Cerrig mixtures or the Cochd-y-ddafad (native- coloured wool). Amongst the winners of prizes was Mr William Pugh, Forge Factory, Machynlleth.) Printed and Published by J. Gibson, Cambrian News Office, Terrace Road, Aberystwyth, Tuesday, September 26th, *,1899.
