Towards about four o'clock the spectators on the landing stage were considerably alarmed by a lady falling over the side of the pier. Before she had reached the water, three young men standing close by sprang into the sea for the ostensible purpose of rescuing her. A minute later there were roars of laughter, it transpiring that the supposed maiden was a young man in female attire who in concert with the other young ijien had planned the incident for the amusement of the sightseers. The three young men struggled desperately to swim with the lady to shore, but failed utterly, & boat ulti- mately having to go to the rescue of the four. The greasy pole competition as could be expected formed another source of great merriment Four young men, R. Bell, R. LI. Hughes, W. J. Hughes, and J. Weller took part. The greasy pole con- sisted of the bowsprit of a vessel moored in the quay. The competitors were kept busily at work for half- an-hour, R. Ll. Hughes nearly accomplishing the trick on several occassions. After about twenty falls into the sea by the different competitors, a bucketful of ashes and sand was thrown on the pole which made the task easier. The youngest com- petitor, W. Jones Hughes, ultimately walked the pole to the end and won the first prize, R. Ll. Hughes taking the second prize. The prize in the duck hunt, 15s, was presented by Mr Rowlands, auctioneer, Towyn. The event proved very interesting, the prize being awarded to R. Bell and O. Jones, the former acting as duck. By the kind permission of the local committee the lifeboat was into launched into the bay. The boat, which was under the command of Coxswain D, Jones, cruised around for about nalf-an-hour. In the morning, when the open centre-board race was on, there was a good breeze, but by about two o'clock the wind had fallen considerably, with the result that the boats in the second class fishing boat competition made a bad start. The prizes in this race were first, f5; second, jE3 third, 91 10a. Three boats took plrt-the Eliza Jane of Aber- dovey, commanded by Tom Watson the Ethel of Aberystwyth, commanded by Henry Davies and the Agnes of Barmouth, commanded by John Garnett. The course, which was about five miles, lay round the fairway buoy outside the bar. After the boats had been tacking. for an hour, making little progress, the breeze wished for came. The Eliza Jane was the first to catch the breeze and she immediately forged ahead, leaving the Ethel and Agnes a good distance behind. The Ethel, how- ever, gained on her gradually and passed her about two miles from the starting point. Once the Ethel got the lead she went flying through the water and she passed the winning post in grand style amid loud cheers. The Eliza Jane was second, coming in eight miuutes late". The Agne^, who never had a look in, was miles behind. Owing to insufficient entries the yacht race and the half-deck centre board race were abandoned and the Committee of Management arranged a special match between the Band of Hope, Aberyst- wyth, under the command of Theophilus Jenkins the Iris, Aberystwyth, under the command of James Jones; and the Scud of Barmouth. The start was made at the time the wind fell down and the three boats lay becalmed by about an hour and a half. When th- h-eeze came the Scud stood out, the match being coufiued to the Band of Hope and the Iris. In the result, the Band of Hope won the first prize of £5 by a good margin. A second prize of 93 was awarded to the Iris. The proceedings ended shortly after half-past five.
