OUR LOCAL FLORA.
OUR LOCAL FLORA. Bot „nist-, will find Aberystwyth to be a most con- venient centre for making short jaunts or long excur- sions to the countiy in search of specimens and their pur uit may lead them to many a charming spot, W here the fragrant hawthorn brambles, With the woodbine alternating, Scent the dewy way Here we have compressed in a limited compass a varied assortment of rock, hill, mountain, dale, moorland, cascade, waterfall, and a picturesque sea- board. It is further enhanced by an endless vista of ocean and mountain scenery ot unsurpassing beauty. This checkered landscape provides a suitable haunt for a great variety of plants. On the shore we find grow- ing in the bhuijje and the sand the Sea Holly (Eryn- gium mcu'.tumum) Yellow Horned Poppy (Glaucium luteutn), Sea Bindweed (Convolvulus Soldanella), with i s smah fleshy leii, es and large funnel-shaped flowers. Sea Plantain (Piantago Alaritiina). Knotgrass^Polygon- atum maritinuim), Saud Carex, Geranium columbinum, the long beaked fruits of which coil and force them- selves into the ground the Heubane (Hyoscyamus niger), alrtady in truit, which is urn-like in shape with a removable lid to allow of the s-ed to escape the S .-urvy-grasi (C^cnlcaria officinabs)often depends from tne cliffs in long trellises to the water's edge while 11'rift or Ladies Pincushions (Anneria vulgaris) makes its home on the edge ot the s-arped cliffs. Rest Harrow (Onoois "pincsu), one of the pea tribe, grows in a sheltered spot <,n the Castle ground, it has a heavy repulsive smell, which has, no doubt, often stood it in good stead and may account for its existence in this spot while many a more iusignincaut fiJwer has dis- appeared long ago the Pennywort finds a living in the crannied walls of the old cas-tle, and the white and the yellow stonecrops (Sedum alba and acer) may be found on the surrounding rocks. Sone pans of Pen- dinas, is c iveiei with soft beds of thyme-bpsprinkled turf" and large patches of ladies Bedstraw (Galium verum) with their tasselled heads of bright-yellow flowers, the little Sherardia with its tiny lilac coloured Bowers grows sice by side with the rank Goosegrass (Galium apariiit). By the wav, the cleavers of this plant go by the name of llau'r ffe.rad (the parson's iice) in some pa:ts of the Principality and seem to recall a time wuen the p irson was as molestsome and annoying as the cleavers. The Corn cockle (Lychnis eithago) may be met with sometimes in the cultivated uelds; Century (Erythnei Ceutaurium). Sheep's bit (.1 asione m >ntaua), aud Alilkwort (Polvgala depressa), wi h flowers of various hues grow on the slopes; while in wet places beneath, the yellow flag (Iris pseudacorus), Anowhead (S;<gi1 tana tagittifolia). and Bur-reed (Spar- anium Simplex), fl iiiii) ng the reeds and rushes ibo the Pondweed (Potainogcton natans) and Duck- weed (Leinna) iu tne muddy waieis as well as Horsetails (E(ILI setum pia'enf-e and iimosum), the descendants of some of those gigantic trees of the great carboniferous age, which ros-e high into "he heavens in by-gone ages and are now hdd low in the dark bowels of the earth. In the fields by Rhydyfeliu the St John's worts (Hypericum dubium and peifo.at-um) Lousewort (Ped- iculu is palusti is) and the R,attie (Rhinanthus-Crista- Galli) grow iu piofusion. also the Valerian, Prunella, Bartsia, Bugle, Eye-bright, Golden-rod, Figvvorts, Tor- mentil, Hemp agrimony (Eapatoriun cat nabinum)^ Pepperworts, the white climbing Fumitory (Corydalis claviculata), BetorJY (Betonica officinalis), cousidered asovereigu remedy by ti e Welsh folk from tiinei tntllem- orial and known as Cnbau St. Ffraid (Sc. Ffraid's comb) and some fine specimens of that grass-like lily-Luzula axima. On the road side between Picadilly and Rhydyfeliu theie is an elm tree with which is associ- ated a mysterir,us tale of bloodshed. This certain tree may he easily knowu from the otoers by its crooked and haggard form. Tradition siates that in days gone by a young maiden was murdered on that spot. Her blood spurted against this elm tree, and io recoiled and shuddered at the deed of horror [and assumed its pre- sent gnarled form. Another version of the story states that the malformation is owing to a hack which was made in t'.e tree to mark the site where a young maiden met with a pamfu. and accidental death. In the corn- ti-dos toe Knapweed ku^wn as "hard heads," Knawel Alaritjold. Corn snurrcy aud the Le.ser Lady's Alantle, and the Violet (V. tricolor) grow in abundance. Another Hypericum (H. Andrci-acnium), the Tutsan or park leaves grows luxuriantly in a field near Nant- eos, whether it be native, or introduced we cannot say, it has, however, taken possession of several acres of stony ground, and its large yellow flowers appear very bright and conspicuous in the shade of the dark pine- wood. A common local Welsh name for the St Jonn's worts is Llysiau r gwaed (Bloodworts). This plant has a claim to the Welsh name (Gwaed y gwyr) prior to (Sambucus Ebulus). as it has a zea,on in its favour, that if the yellow flowering tops are bruised between the fingers, they will immediately communicate a deep crimson stain. Tne (Eoulos) claims it on the strength of a fabulous tale that the plant originally sprung from the blond of the Danes who were slain in Britain, whence it has also obtained the Engl'sh name Danewrt"- Wet.
