RUTHIN. VOLUNTEERS FOR CAMP. On Saturday last, the Ruthin Volunteers, I under the command of Capt. Jenkins and Lieut. Romv, fets by a special tIa:n, starting at 11 45 a.m. for Salisbury Plaia, where they will under- go their annual training.

DEATH OF MR. ROBERT LLOYD. It is with much regret we have to record the death of Mr. Robert Lloyd, late schoolmaster of the National School, who died on Wednesday afternoon, after a short illness. A (letailed re port will appear in our next issue.

1 BOARD OF GUARDIANS. In the absence of the chairman (the Rev. J. F. Reece), Mr. R. H. Pugh presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Guardians on Monday, and there were also present Messre. John Foulkes, R. D. Jones, E. Powell Jones, Richard Jones, John Lloyd, Hugh Jones, A. Lloyd Jones, William Ellis, Isaac DAniel, William Davies, W. G. Richards, and Henry Williams, with the clerk (Mr. R. Humphreys Roberts). THE HOUSE. It was reported that the number of pau pers in the house was 61 as against 55 the corresponding fortnight of last year. Du- ring the fortnight,34 vagrants were relieved, an increase of four. THE LATE MATRON. The Clerk explained that owing to the death of the matron (Mrs. Roberts), it would be necessary, according to the regu- lations, for the master to resign his office at the end of the present quarter, but, of course, he was eligible for re-election, pro- vided satisfactory arrangements be made in regard to the appointment of matron. As the chairman was absent, and so few mem- bers present, it would, perhaps, be well to postpone the matter until the next Board. This course was acceded to. RESIGNATION OF THE HOUSE SERVANT. A letter was read from the house servant, Miss Emma Edwards, intimating her inten- tion of resigning her post at the end of a month. THE APPOINTMENT OF NURSE. In regard to the appointment of Miss Annie Parry as nurse, the Medical Officer (Dr. J. Medwyn Hughes), whose opinion had been asked with the view of replying to the Local Government Board, wrote that she had kept the sick wards clean, and had shown aptitude to obtain the information necessary to the proper discharge of her duties, but apart from confinement cases, no case had arisen which required particu- lar skill on the part of the nurse. If the Guardians were determined not to have a trained nurse, he did not think they could do better than retain the services of Miss Parry. Still he was of the same opinion as I that expressed in his ettar of March last in favour of the appointment of a trained nurse. This subject was also left over uctil the next Board.

SYMPATHY WITH THE MASTER. Mr. Henry Williams briefly referred to the death of the matron, and proposed that a vote of sympathy be passed with the master in his sad bereavement. The lato matron, they all knew, had given them every satisfaction. Mr. R. D. Jones seconded, and the mo- tion was agreed to. This was all the business.

PRESTATYN. PETTY SESSIONS. TUESDAY.—Before Messrs. S. Perks (in the chair), W. Elwy Williams, T. Morgan Owen, R. C. Enyon, W. H. Coward, W. Bulcock, and Rice J. Williams. A BATCH OF SCHOOL CASES. EMPLOYERS SUMMONED. T. Pennant Williams, Treneweth, quarry owner, Rhyl, was summoned by J. H. Savage, school attendance officer, for employing a lad thirteen years of age, named Thomas Jones, on the 17th of June, contrary to the provisions of the Education Act of 1876, and the Factory Act of 1878. Mr. J. Roberts-Jones, solicitor, Rhyl, ap- peared for the defendant. Mr. Savage at the outset objected to Mr. W. Elwy Williams sitting on the bench, because he was related to the defendant. Mr. George (the Clerk)—la what way is he related? Mr. Savage said he understood he was the defendant's uucle. Mr. George-But if you make an objectiou, you must be prepared to state whatthe relation- ship is. Mr. Elwy Williams—You need not trouble, Mr. George. I am not going to act. I am re- lated to the defendant, but I did not know any- thing of this case until I came on the bench. Mr. Elwy Williams then withdrew, and the case proceeded. J. H. Savage said that the boy's name was Thos. Jones, and he was the son of Levi Jones, Ffynnongroew, a stone mason. The child'sage was 13, and was employed by Mr. Williams, as a labourer, in his quarry on the 17th of June. By iha Clerk-He could nob say of his own knowledge that the boy was working on the day in question, but the boy himself admitted to him that he was workiug on that day. Jane Jones, the lad's mother, was then called by Mr. Savage, and slid she lived at Garden View, Ffynnongroew, and was tne wife of Levi Jones. The boy went to the quarry to assist his father at the quarry two or three days a week, and the father was in the habit of drawing the money for the boy's labour, excep- ting a few shillings from Mr. Pennant Williams. She could not tay that the boy was at the quarry on the 17th of June, nor could she say th^t he was employed at all by Mr. Pennant Williams. The Chairman addressing the prosecutor, said that there was no legal proof that the lad was working at the quarry on the day in question. He might be satisfied that an offence had been committed, but there was no strict proof before the court, and the case would be dis- missed. A case against Thomas Charles Rogers, Dy- serth, for not sending his child to school, was also dismissed for the want of strict and direct evidence of the non-attendance on the day alleged. Robert Whiteford, Keliton Farm, Llanasa, charged with employing a lad named William Williams, of Gwespyr, on his farm, on the 17th of June, pleaded not guilty. He produced a book showing that the boy had left his employ on the 10th. He also stated that the notice had been addressed to his father, and the summons made out to his father, and afterwards altered, his name being substituted. Mr. Savage said he saw the boy at work on the 17th himself. The bench held that the evidence was not complete, and dismissed the case. Mary Anne Hughes, Masons' Arms, Gwes pyr, charged with employing a boy contrary to the Education Act on the 7th of June, admit- ted that she employed the boy as a half.timer. Mr. Savage said the boy had only passed standard two, and was not thirteen years of age, a.nd could not be a half-timer. j The Chairman said that the defendant must satisfy herself that boys are eligible as half- timers before employing them. She would be fined 51. and 5a. 6d. costs. mall,willising, GweepI TO inobhor of the boy was fined 3s. for neglecting to send him to school. An attendance order was made against Levi Jones, Ffynnoogroew, to send his son Thomas Jones to school, but the costs were remitted. POACHING. John Owen, labourer, Victoria l ard, was summoned by George Joseph Edge, game- keeper to Sir Edward Bates, for trespassing in pursuit of conies oa Nant Fawr held, over which Mr. Hall, of Liverpool, held sporting rights. Defendant did not appear. Complainaut said he saw the t7tefeiidant kill a rabbit about 9 o'clock at night, but dil not pick it up. A fine of 5s. and 8s. 6d. costs was imposed.

URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of this Council was held on Wednesday evening, when there were present:—Messrs. J. Jones, J. P., C.C., chair man; W. H. Coward, J. T. Scott, John Prit- chard, Robert Davies, Peter Ellis, G. O. Jones, John Hughes (clerk), W. Thonns (surveyor), and Dr. J. Lloyd Roberts, Medical Officer of Health. PINANCIAL. It was reported that E-21 198. Sd. had been collected on account of the General District Rate during the month of Jane, and that 970 had been received as a grant from the County Council. BRYN GWALIA. FOOTPATH. The Road Committee reported that the foot- path near Bryn Gwalia had been under consi deration, and it was left in the hands of Mr. Linnell to arrange. THE SEWERING OF CEMENT ROAD. A letter was read from Mr. Mackie, of the London and North Western Railway Company, asking when the Council proposed to proceed with the sewering of Cement Road. The Clerk was instructed to reply, stating that the work of sewering the road would be proceeded with without delay. DIRECTION PLATE. An application trom the officers or the Con- gregational Chapel, The Avenue, i or permission to put a direction plate on a gas lamp post in High Street was granted. TRADE REFUSE. Mr. Coward called attention to the complaints made by tradesmen with regard to the removal of shop refuse. One tradesman in the town took the refuse from his shop to the place where he was told to, and then was told to take it hack again. Could nothing be done to help these people. Mr. Scott remarked that they were not bound to remove trade refuse. At the same time, he thought if the tradesmen did not know where to deposit the refuse from their shops, it was very hard on them. Mr. Davies thought they should try to help the shopkeepers in this matter. They suffered a great hardship, and they wanted to know what they were paying their rates for. The Surveyor said that if the shopkeepers paid the carters, they would be quite willing to take the refuse, and he had sent a notice to the tradesmen to that effect. Mr. Coward observed that no doubt the tradesmen would make their own arrange- ments. But they did not know where to take the refuse to. They might come to arrange- ments to allow the carts to call once a week to take the refuse away. The Chairman Or allow them to deposit the refuse in our pits.' The Surveyor said the contractors were quite prepared to allow tint if they were renumera- ted. The Medical Officer said that if they com- menced to carry trade refuse, perhaps they would be called upon to remove slaughterhouse refuse. The Chairman:—'And we would not know where we would stop.' Mr. G. O. Jones aeked how they were to dia- tinguish between trade and house refuse. The Surveyor replied that seperate recep- tacles must be provided for house refuse and trade refuse. Mr. G, O. Jones asked how often the carters were supposed to call to empty the dustbins. He objected to have refuse lying about for a lengthened period, and did not intend to have it. He suggested that the carts should go. The Chairman said the contract was for the carters to carry when necessary. After some further conversation, the matter was referred to committee. PROPOSED HORSE SHOW. Mr. Scott read a letter he had received from a tradesman in the town suggesting the hold- I ing of a horse show, but said that he himself had no suggestion to make. The Chairman temarked that it hardly came within the scope ot the Council to arrange far the holding of a horse show. No doubt if the ini- tiative were taken by someone, the Council- lors individually would be pleased to support it. Mr. R. Davies said they might consider the desirability of holding a horse fair in the place. They were in an agricultural district, and there were no tairs nearer than Caerwys on one side, and Abergele on the other. The matter was referred to committee. UNFOUNDED CHARGE OF SCARCITY OF WATER. The Chairman referred to a paragraph con- tained in a London daily paper that morning, stating that thero was a midnight rush for water in Prestatyn. He said it was hardly necessary it Presiatyn to take notice of th > paragraph, but people in other places read th J paper, and might think there was a scarcity of water in the place. That was not so. There was plenty of water, but as the pipe was not large enough, they had to arrange to turn the water off at certain times, to enable the upper part of the district to be supplied. The Water Committee had the matter in hand, and they hoped very shortly to take over the water un- dertaking, and put in a temporary pipe to bring more water down. Mr. Davies and Mr. Coward also spoke, the latter remarking that the arrangement for turning off the water in lower parts to enable the upper parts of the district to get a supply of water had been in existence ever since tho water had been laid on. Ultimately tne Clerk was instructed to wire to the paper referred to, to contradict the para- graph. I

RHOSESMOR. CHANGE OF RESIDENCE. Many will be interested to hear that Mr. Walton Coe Jones is leaving the neighbourhood this week for Flint, where he intends opening an ironmongery shop at Chester Street. We feel sure that those who have known Mr. Jones, will wish him every success in his new sphere, and it can be safely said that if perseverance and steadiness can accomplish anything in the way of building up a business, then Mr. Jones is bound to succeed.

TRIPS. On Tuesday, the members of the Henlian Church Sunday Schools took their treat to Rhyl, being driven there in brakes supplied by Mr. David Jones, Berlian, Denbigh. A large number availed themselves of the opportunity of visiting the wellknown seaside resort, and they returned between eight and nine p.m., after having spent a most enjoyable day. On the same day also, the members of the Church choir journeyed by train to Llandudno for their annual treat, and it was also evident that they had also thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

THE EHYDONEX CASE. To the E lit or of THE NORTH WALES TIMES. SIR, Referring to 'Farmer's'" letter in your last issue re the Penal Rents enforced upon the Cerygllwydion Estate, may I ask the writer, as one knowing the Rhydonen farm, would he or any other person say upon what fields were the Penal rents enforced, and whether they were enforced according to the amounts actually stated in the agreement would be enforead, or was it in accordance with certain loses or deteriation in the valuation of the law ? Also,whether the deteriation in value was permanent or temporary and if temporary, whether the incoming tenant was in any shape or form compensated for it. Further, we should like to know whether the question of deteriation of the value of the land was under consideration iby the Arbitrators before they finally submitsd the case to the Referee! Lastly, seeing that the Court that dealt with the Rhydonen case was an open court, how is it that the reports of the Arbitrators as submitted to the Referee are not published? Why the delicacy connected with the withholding of these precious documents from the public, seeing that the Arbitrators award, as one would think, arose on account of difference of opinion as between the Arbitrators? Would it be too much te ask the Committee of Mr. Lloyd's testimonial, or Mr. Lloyd him- helf, to give us some information as to these re- ports, or more properly to publish them, if possibly. THE DENBIGH TOWN COUNCIL AND THE PUBLIC HALL QUESTION. To the Editor of THE NORTH WALES TIMES. Sir From a short paragraph of the proceedings of the Denbigh Town Council which appeared in a daily paper, I observed that the question of providing a Public Hail for the town has again been under (the consideration of that body. Being anxious to know what really had taken place, I obtained a copy of the report presented by the Committee of the whole Council on the subject, and was also informed of the decision which the Council arrived at. We all know with what consummate ease our worthy Councillors can shelve some of the most prominent questions within the borough. If the hearts of our Councilllors are not in any necessary i mprovement., they at once find an excuse for delaying such improvement however 1 oud the public may clamour in favour of carrying it out. One instance in point is the conduct of the Council in regard to the Housing of the W nrkmg Classes. When that matter was first mooted by Mr. Roger Pryce the Council seemed to be divided in its opinion in regard to it. Soon, however, either from a conviction that the houses were necessary, or that their antagonism to the scheme would affect their prospects of being returned to the Council at the forthcoming election, the majority of the members, if I remember right ly, came round to express themselves as will- ing to do all they could in order to carry out the scheme. The question, as we all know, was referred to a committee the committee reported, and the matter ia due course came before the Council. The inevitable discussion ensued, und the inevitableconclusion arrived at, viz., to (refer the matter back again to the Committee which originally dealt with it. A few months was allowed to elapse, the Com- mittee again reported, and the Council again discussed, and again it was referred back to the Committee, who went through the same form- ality. It is now a matter of public knowledge that this sort of dilly dallying with the question went on for a period of three or four years, and now we find that we are as far as ever from the realisation of the scheme. If the Coun- cillors had been honest, they would have knocked the thing in the head at the earliest opportunity, thereby saving the ratepayers' money, and also the time of the Council ors themselves. For what object they kept the matter in abeyance fcr so long a period, I will leave the Councillors to explain, or let the public jadge for themselves. Now, sir, it seems to me that the same line of conduct is to be observed in regard to the question of erecting a Public Hall in the .town. Indeed, up to the present, the Council are pro- ceeding on exactly the same lines as they did in respect of the Housing of the Working Classes question; and, judging from past ex- perience, I would almost go so far as to say that tmonths and many months will be spent in the consideration of this matter, simply in order to appease that large section of the community who believe that such a hall is an absolute necessity, whilst, at the same time, tli-y have not the slightest intention of goiop for the scheme. This contention m' 1" of course, be wrong, but those who 1" .oW the proceedings of the Council cannot uelp coming to the conclusion that this will be the outcome. I understand that the Council have now referred this question to a small committee, but they have been careful enough to do it in such a way that there is no immedi- ate prospect of Denbigh being in possession of a Public Hall worthy of its size and importance as a County town. The question, so far as I understand, whicn has been referred to this committee is the re-roofing of the Butchers' Market, and not tho direct question of erect- ing a Public Hall. Still the Committee will be able to deal indirectly with the greater and more important question. That is, they are to consider the question of re-roofing, whilst;, at the same time, they are to recommend, if they are able to make any recommendation at all, thit the work be carried out in such a way that a Public Hall can be erected at some future time without interfering with the Market Hall roof. That is all very well in its way, but does not this mean the shelving for an Indefin- ite period the provision of a Public Hall? I venture to say that it does. Our worthy Coun- cillors are well aware that we are in dire need of a place wherein our public meetings and demonstrations may be held. They also know that there is a strong feeling in the town in favour of the project, but rather than do the necessary thing at the proper time, I must in. evitably come to the conclusion that the Town Council, by their latest action have given us to understand that they do not mean to give us this great and pressing improvement. As our Councillors are unwilling to face this matter in a proper spirit, I would suggest to them, more especially to the Mayor, the de suability of calling a public meeting to discuss the question- That would once and for all decide the question one way or another-at least for the present, and, so far as I can see, nothing but an overwhelming vote ot the In- habitants of the borough will put a atop to the half-hearted way in which our Council goes about the matter. Up to the present, those who have been most prominently concerned in the scheme are Messrs. A. O. Evans and W. D. W. Griffith. We need not put too much Importance on the opposition ot Mr. Griffith. We all know that he has opposed a number of necess- arry improvements in the town on the score of expense, but any improvement that is carried out in the town will not necessarily add materially to bisgcomfort, whilst they will, of course, affect his pocket. As to Mr. Evans, he has been looked apon as one of the go ahead members of the Town Council, and one who gives a great deal of attention and thought to matters respecting the prosperity 01 the town. It is difficult to unierstaad why lie is such all I uncompromising opponent of a scheme, which, when accomplished would be an outstanding I feature ia the attractions of the town. Of course, In has made jt clear that the bp-ar which fnghtess him is the question of expense, but is that to stand in the way of a realisation of a long felt want ? F In conclusion, I hope that this question will II be taken up ia earnest so taat Denbigh might I be on an equality wita other towns, smaller and less important, in the matter of a Public Hall. RHYL. FIRE ALARM. About half past ten on Tuesday night, the town was aroused by the ringing of the tire bell, and in a few minutes hundreds of residents and visitors arrived at the fire station. The fire was at Morfa Cottage, Church street, and in almost incredibly short time, the fire brigade were on the spot with the hose cart. A hoae was immediately run out and connected with the main, but fortunately the outbreak had been subdued almost as soon as the alarm was given, so that the service of the firemen was not required.

RHYL IMPROVEMENT BILL. This Bill, which has already passed the House of Commons, and the object of which is to effect improvements in the local government of Rhyl, and also to empower the authorities to rate the Rhyl bridge, yes- terday again came before the Committee of the House of Lords, of which Lord Ribbles- dale is chairman. The bridge ratiog ques- tion, the only one in dispute, was settled by the parties on Tuesday. Yesterday the committee passed the preamble. The parliamentary agents went through clauses with their lordships and some adjustments having been made, the Bill was ordered to be reported to the House.

BETTING PROSECUTION. POLICE RAID ON A COMMISSION AGENT'S OFFICE. On Wednesday afternoon, the police raid- ed an office in Wellington Road, where bet- ting operations were suspected. The occu- pier of the office, John Henry Jones, and eight other persons were arrested. In the eveci.)?, they were brought before Messrs. W. Elwy Williams, aud E. P. Jones, J. H. Jones being charged with keeping the office for betting purposes, and the others with aiding and abetting. Inspector Pearson said that from infor- mation received, be took notice of what was going on in the office occupied by the defendant John Henry Jones, at Welling- ton Chambers, Wellington Road. He had the place watched, and having obtained a warrant, he went to the office shortly after two o'clock in company with P.S. McWalter and P.C. E. Roberts. He found all of the defendants there, and secured a number of papers relating to betting. He read the warrant over to John Henry Jones, and cautioned him. That defendant replied, 'I may as well plead guilty.' Alfred Jones admitted he came there for betting pur- poses, so did Thomas John Davies, Walter Vaughan, Webb Jones. and William Wil- liams. Stannard was employed as a mes- senger- Stannard That is wrong. Inspector Pearson added that Wharton admitted that he was there for betting purposes, ard Naismith said he went there about a pair of boots. That defendant was the only one who denied having gone there for the purpose of beating. All the men were taken to the police station and detained. He found S24 3s. lOd. in the office. He applied for a remand. The Chairman said the Bench had de- cided to remand the defendants until next Tuesday at U o'clock. They admitted them to bail, J, H. Jones in 220, and one surety of S20 each of the others in £ 5. After the defendants had signed the necessary papers they were released. A large number of people awaited the defendants as they left the court, and much excitement prevailed. In fact, the incident was the chief topic of conversation in town.

THE AFFAIRS OF THE RHYL LAUNDRY COMPANY. PETITION FOR WINDING UP DISMISSED. At Chester County Court, on Thursday, before his Honour Judge Sir Horatio Lloyd, an application was made by Mr. Samuel John Amos, printer and newspaper publisher and proprietor, of Rhyl, for the compulsory wind- ing up of the Rhyl Steam Laundry Company. Mr. A. Lewis Jones, Rhyl, app ared for the petitioner, and Mr. E. Brassey, Chester, ap- peared to resist the application. It appeared that the company was originally formed in 1894, and, according to petitioner, had not been a flourishing concern. In March, 1899, a petition was presented in the Bangor County Court for the winding up of this company, the appli-knt then being Mr. J. M. Nicholson. solicitor, Chester, who now opposed the appli- cation. The petition 03 that, occasion was not granted, and subsequently Mr. Nicholson and Mr. Amos took up the property practically in equal shares-at any rate, Mr. Amos claimed to be entitled to 1071 shares. Since 1899, however, the loss on trading had continued. At the end of the year the loss was £ 116 odd, and as far as Mr. Lewis Jones could gather from the papers, the loss for the year 1900 was £ 240. When Mr. Nicholson presented his petition at Bangor the overdraft due to the bank was only 9121, now it had increased to JE443. The parties came to an arrangement that the property should be offered for sale, and this was done lasn month, but it was with- drawn at the sum of £ 1,400, as the concern was still going on at a loss, and as the parties had, unfortunately, disagreed through Mr. Nicholson appointing his son and managing clerk as directors, and his clerk as secretary, and having removed the registered offices from Rhyl to Chester within a very few weeks. Mr. Amos applied that his Honour should grant an order for the compulsory winding up of the company. In reply to the judge, he said he was not representing the bank on that occasion, who were not likely to take proceed- ings, as they had several persons as sureties, including Mr. Amos himself. Mr. Brassey contended that Mr. Amos, not being a creditor, could not present a petition for winding up. Mr. Amos was a guarantor, but he had not been called to pay anything under the guarantee, and therefore had not become a creditoi. The Judge held that under those circum- stances Mr. Amos could not petition, and the petition must be dismissed with costs.

LORD ROSSLYN'S SALARY, The Earl of Rosslyn, on Saturday, in the Kin.ia Bench Division, sued Messrs. Carrie, Rowlands and Co., merchants, of Liverpool, to recover f,85, the balance of salary due under an agreement. The plaintiff's case was that he saw Mr. Rowlands in October, and the latter suggested that he shAild introduce the business of the defendants to some of his friends, his salary to be £5 a week for six months certain. In December his engagement was terminated. The defence was that Lord Rosslyn was employed on condition that the firm had a right to put an end to the arrangement at any moment if it was found to be unsatisfactory, Mr. Justice Darling gave judgment for the pwmw MMVBt claimed with ooete.

THE FIRE BRIGADE THE PROPOSED NEW 'STEAMER.' The Fire Brigade Special Committee consist- ing of Mr. R. Humphreys Roberts (chairman), ij!6 Mayor, Messrs. Wynne Edwards, James £ ughes, R. W- Lloyd, J. M. Davies, and L. W. reported having discussed the particulars W a Steam Fire Engine which would be suitable *0r Denbigh and the surrounding country, and ^ranged to invite specifications,and appointed 5essrs. Humphreys Roberts, James Hughes, W. Lloyd, and J. M. Davies to visit certain Places to inspect their new engines after the J^ceipt of such specifications and afterwards to ^port to this committee. The adoption of the report having been moved and secon ed, Mr. Howel Gee said he should like to know terms of reference to the committee, and ?j[8o to see Mr. Wynne Edwards appointed on sub-committee. it was explained that Mr. Wynne Edwards ad declined to act. Mr. Hewel Gee: At whose expense you in- te^d to send these people all round the country? Mr. Humphreys Roberts: They are not going round the country. Mr. Humphreys Roberts said it appeared to him that the present report of the committee j was simply the old resolution transposed a little bit (laughter). In the report presented at the last meeting, two items were mention- lei:— £ 700 odd for re-roofing ihe hall, and an- other sum which would be the additional expense of converting the place into a public hall. That report now was simply put before them in another form, and he objected. He also objected to the surveyor being puis to the trouble of preparing plans and estimates before the Council first of all decided whether they were going in for the work or not. On being put to the meeting, the amendment was lost. Mr. Evans and Mr. Griffith only voting for it. Mr. Evans then moved another amendment. He said he objected to the constitution of the special committee proposed to carry out the matter. The gentlemen composing this com- mittee were more or less committed to the scheme, and no Government was effectual with- out opposition (laughter and hear, hear). There was necessity for a healthy discus3ion on this matter, and he, therefore, begged to move that the name of Mr. W. D. W. Griffith be added to the committee, which had the con sideration of this matter. This was agreed to. and the name of Mr. Evanslwas also added to the committee. The report of the committee was then agreed to. POSTAL FACILITIES FOR DENBIGH- The following letter received by Mr. J. Herbert Roberts, M.P., and sent by him to Mr. Howel Gee, was read. POST OFFICE, LONDON, Junt 19th. SIR With reference to your question in the House of Commons, and to the letter which you addressed to Mr. Austin Chamberlain on the 27th of March last, I am directed by the Post Master General to inform you that the ques- tion of establishing a train service for the night'maifs to and from Denbigh and Kufchin has again been eonsidered. It appears, how ever, that the circumstances are no more fav- ourable than they were in 1893, and that the Post Master General much regrets that the cost of such train service is not warranted. In regard to your suggestion that a letter-box should be attached to the last train at night from Ruthin and Denbigh to Rhyl, I am to point out that as no officer of the Deparment travels in the train, it would be contrary to the usual practices to provide such box. It is true that in certain very exceptional cases tite rule on the subject has been waived, but in the present case very littie additional time for posting would be afforded, either at Denbigh or Ruthin, and the Post Master General does not think that she advantage to be gained is such as to counter balance the objections to such arrangements. Mr. Howel Gee thought it would be a great advantage if a box could be attached to the last crain, and proposed that they ask Mr. Herbert Roberts to do what he could to influence the postal authorities with a view of extending this facility to the town of Denbigh. Mr. Boaz Jones seconded, and it was car- ried. BURIALS AT THE CEMETERY. THE TABLE OF FEES QUESTION. The following letter was read from the Rev. James CharleB, on behalf of himself and the Nonconformist ministers of the town. DENBIGH, July 3rd. DEAR SIR In the first instance, the Town Council re- solved that it was not necessary to adopt a table of fees at the cemetery. The Nonconformist ministers agreed with the Town Council, but it seems that the Rector and Priest objected to this course. Owing to this objection, the the Secretary of State has informed the Town Council that a table of fees for religiacs ser- vices at the Cemetery must be fixed. It is obvious then that the responsibility for this rests entirely on the shoulders of the Rector and Priest. However, we as Nonconformist ministers wiH have nothing to do whatever with a table of fees for the religious services at the cemetery.' The letter was signed by Mr. Charles on behalf of the Nonconformist ministers. Mr. Keepfer said thit the letter was not quite correct, and pointed out that the Roman Catholic Priest never objected, as put forward by Mr. Charles. Mr. Howel Gee also said that the Roman Catholic Priest did not object, and that the only person who did object was the Rector. Mr. Keepfer added that the Roman Catholic Priests were willing to do the duties for nothing, but if a charge had to be made that they were willing to fix it at 2s. Mr. Howel Gee thought that aU the corres- pondence, after amending the reference made by Mr. Charles to the Roman Catholic Priest should be submitted to the Home Secretary, with the intimation that the Rector wanted 2s. 6d. for his services in regard to the burial of parishioners and 5a. for non-parishoners, but that everybopy else concerned were willing to do the work for nothing. The Council were not keen upon tixing a table of fees, and he thought they should make it clear what their position was in the matter, but that they were willing to the fees of I-s. 6d. and 5s. already mentioned if they were compelled to have a table at all. The feeling of the Nonconform- ists and the Roman Catholics were that these duties could be done free of charge, but the Rector forced their hands in the matter, and compelled them to have a table of fe< s. That being so, the Council Bhould make it clear to the Home Secretary that they agreed under the circumstances to the fees already men- tioned. Mr. Humphreys Roberts said if they did as Mr. Gee suggested, they would not be consist. ent with what they did at the last Council meeting, because the clerk was then instructed to inform Mr. Charles that they recommended the fees with the view ot preventing the authorities fixing them at a higher amount. Mr. Boaz Jones did not think they need do anything in the matter. Although the Non. conformists intended to give their service free, yet he thought it better to have a table of fees according to the instructions of the Home Secretary and the amounts already mentioned appeared to him reasonable. Mr. R. Owen thought the Council had noth- ing to do with the matter. All they did was to try to get the parties to agree. The minis- ters and clergy failed in this, and therefore the Council could do no more. It was ultimately decided, on the motion ot Mr. Gee, to write to the Home Secretary to the effect that the members of the Council were of the opinion that no table of fess was neces aary, but that, in the face of his letter, that they recommended the fees already agreed upon.
