The Three-cornered Contests. The three-cornered contests have resulted in the loss of many seats which might well have been easily retained with decisive majorities but for the insensate division of the Liberal and Labour forces. Happily, all these contests did not end in Liberal defeats. AshLon-under-Lyne was won by the Liberal with 4,039 votes against 3.746 for the Conservative, and 413 for the Socialist. In Bristol, East, the Liberal led with 6 804 against 4,033 for the Conservative, and 2,225 for the Labour candidate. At Bishop Auckland, the Liberal won by 5,391 against 5,841 for the Conservative and 3,579 for La- bour. At Gateshead, the Liberal headed the poll with 6,0CO votes against 6,323 for the Con- servative, and 3,572 for Labour. Apain, at Hud- dersfield, the Liberal won with 7,158 votes against 5,686 for the Conservative, and 5,153 for Labour. So at Middlesbrough 9,670 votes placed the Liberal at the head of the poll IIgainst 6,756 for the Conservative and only 2,710 for Labour. Also at Rochdale the Liberal received 6.309 votes against 0,387 for the Con- servative and 1,735 for the Socialist. The u Metropolitan division of Shoreditch was also won by a Lib-ril with 3,041 votes agamst 2,585 for the Conservatives, and 701 for the Socialist. In the Brighiside division of Suffolk the Libera! was ejected by 6,156 votes against 4.200 for the Conservative and 510 for the Socialist. Holin- firth, another Yorkshire constituency, elected a Liberal by 6,339 votes against 3,043 for the Conservatives, and 1,643 for Labour Aberdeen, North, was won by the Libera! with 4,297 votes, against 2,314 for the Conservative, and 1,344 for the Socialist. Tradeston division of Glasgow was carried by the Liberal with 2,966 votes I against 2,773 for the Conservative, and 2,673 for Labour And Swansea Town elected the Liberal by 6 020 votes against 4,375 for the Con- servative and 1,451 for the Socialist. In the Hyde division of Cheshire, where the Labour candidate received the blessing of Mr. Iveir Hardie at a bazaar, when he denounced every workman who votod for a Liberal or a Conser- vative, the Liberals were true to their prin- ciples, and secured the return of the Liberal candidate by 4,476 votes, against 4,461 for the Conservative, the Labour candidate receiving 2,401. It was a close shave for the Liberal-only 15 majority over the Conservative. In the Colne Valley again. a Liberal, Dr. Chas. Lea.ch, headed the poll with 4,741 votes against 3,750 for the Conservative, and 3,149 for tho firebrand Socialist, Grayson. These were victories won by the determined attitude of the Liberals. Now we come to seats absolutely given away to the Conservatives. The Metropolitan division of Bow and Bromloy was won by a Conservative with 3.695 votes—the Lib 'I.] (Stopford Brooke) receiving 2,167, and the Socialist 2,955—thus 1,427 votes were thrown away. At Burnley, a seat was given to the Conservatives by only 95 votes, whilst 4,948 were wasted on the Socialist. Cockerrnouth division of Cumberland was sac- rificed by splitting the Liberal and Labour vote, which together amounted to 5,546, and the Con- servative romped in with 4,578-neariv a thous- vl and votes thrown away. Tewkesbury division of Gloucester was one of the latest contests sanc- tioned by the TL.P. executive, and the So- cialist candidate there polled just 238 votes. The Conservative, however, was S62 ahead of the Liberal. Manchester, S.W was friven to the Tory, who polled 3,111 againsl 3,004 for the Liberal and 1,228 for Labour. Whitehaven was another free gift to the Conservatives, their can- didate being placed at the head of the poll with 1,188 votes, the Liberal ccminsr next with 852 a.nd Labour last with 825—489 votes thrown away. Last is the Camlschie division of Glas- gow, where 3,227 votes secured the seat for the Conservatives, whilst 5 236 votes were divided between the Liberal and Labour candidates, 2,793 being given for the Liberal and 2.443 for Labour. Here are six seats counting J2 on a division, absolutely handed over to the Conser- vatives as free gifts.
NIGHT TERRORS.

NIGHT TERRORS. A curious increase is noticed in cases of "night terror" amongst children whose baby minds are compe!led to gorge scraps of knowledge as &oon as they can walk to the nearest school. Tha little bodies are too young to creat? the vital force required for such unnatural brain activity, and hence nerv- ous exhaustion manifests itself by ''night terrors" and the future ills which result there- from. Such eminent authorities as Dootois Butler and Gordon Stables, &c-, strongly advocate the use of Phosferme to provide a sufficiency of nervo force, the exe?ilent results of which are typically represented in a letter from Mrs. P Hazard, who writes:—My chil- dren were so nervous and would scream and cling to anyone in the dark, but. now Phoofer- ¡ ine has made their nerves stronger, and they are no longer afraid."—Shinvll Heath, Botley. ) Labour Politics, I The annual conference of the Labour Party will bo held at Newport on February 9rh and the two following days. One topic for discus- ? s;on will be tho recommendation of the Ex^cu- I tive Committee with reference to the payment of members for the autumn Session of Parlia- ment. They suggeit that the Parliamentary Fund Constitution be amended so as to provide for the payment from the fund to all members elected under the constitution of equal sums not to exceed £ 200 per annum for an ordinary Session, beginning either in January or Febru- ary, and finishing not later than the end of August. When thz. Session exceeds this length, a further payment at the rate of £ 10 per inonth during which Palliamerit is actually sit- ting oehall be made. The^e payments shall only be made to members whose candidatures have been promoted by one or more societies which have contributed to the fund, and no payments shall be made to a member or can- didate of any society which has not contributed to the fund for one year. The Newton Labour Party propose that the cost of the railway fares to and from the House of Commons of Labour members should be charged upon the funds of the party, and that, if necessary, a small extra levy be made to meet the cost of third class fares. Another amendment is to the effect that "a reasonable fixed sum" per annum should be allowed Labour members for third class railway expenses between the House of Commons and their constituencies, provided lhey. are outside London. Other matters to be considered concern unemployment, the break- up of the Poor Law, old-age PeDsionz-an ex- tension of the scheme by .limiting the age to 60 years being asked for—tlie House of Lords, electoral reform, education, boy and girl labour, a shorter working day, factory and shop litiga- tion, mining legislation, the Workmen's Com- pensation Act, the cab trade legislation, the proposed Labour newspaper, the condition of public service, the Character Note Bill, nation- alisation of the land, of railway?, and of hos- pitals, the fusion of the Labour Party and the Trades Union Congress, and ths payment of juries, etc.

A Good WI ord for Gas Fires.: There is a |grej .t deal of mistaken prejudice against the g Í\s S re. Probably owing to its ex- perience in times past with obsolete types oi hres th' pf tiblic has come to regard this useful donK comfort as utterly insanitary and unhyg tuii. Nowadays, however, there are such e; fcel'xent- patterns in the market, the gas fire car I ly.) so beautifully fitted, and its ad. vantages ir i the way of cleanliness, convenience, easa of c( ;,ri),rol, and satisfactory consumption of unpunt acs are so great that it is again win- ning favc /or. From a hygienic point of view, £ aJ"3 & eading medical journal, the modern gas fire cf the type now used in hospitals, for instance. j6 irreproachable. Provided with a proper ( Jue and safeguarded with a correct screen, ,it is admirably suited for public and private rooms, and is a perfectly safe and' health: i method of heating. Its one drawback is that it consumes a greater quantity of oxygen than < Joes the ordinary coal fire, and for that reasor I it is imperative that rooms in which such flras are installed ehould be well ven- tilate 11,
