NOTES ON PASSING EVENTS.
NOTES ON PASSING EVENTS. A PENNY 'BUS FOR PONTYPRIDD. Preventing the Tra ncars coming down Mill Street, may have been a wise step as regards the safety of pedestrians, bat the usefulness of the tramway service to the town has been hereby reduced almost to nil. People anxious to go to the Rhondda Valley are frequently seen panting up the hill, and exclaiming, "I wonder whether I will catch the car." Others go by break or by train rather than risk disappointment. Now, could not someone be found enter- prising enough to run a penny 'bus" to various parts of the town, and also to meet the cars ? We feel sure hundreds of per- sons would gladly avail themselves of a penny ride from Tabernacle Square to the Railway Station or to the tramway terminus. Who will start it ? Please don't all speak at once. -0--
A GOOD "SCORE."
A GOOD "SCORE." No fewer than twenty-five of the county council candidates advertised their addresses in the Chronicle-another indication of the immense popularity this Journal has at- tained in the Metropolis of the South Wales coal trade, and throughout the sur- rounding districts. Other papers were not able to compete in supplying full reports of the progress of the contests, a fact which the public as well as candidates made a note of, and the result was a run for the Chronicle, out distancing all its contempor- aries, so far as the Taff & Rbondda Valleys are concerned. Our special edition," issued early on Friday morning, and sent away to other towns and villages by the first train on that day, contained the results of the local elections up to 6 o'clock a.m., — not a bad score for a weekly paper-a, clear day before the morning papers, and about nine hours earlier than the evening papers. a -1" --v-

POLLING AT THE RECENT ELECTION.
POLLING AT THE RECENT ELECTION. The fact that only seven ballot papers were spoilt out of nearly 1,100 votes record- ed for the two candidates at Pontypridd last week speaks in a creditable straia of the intelligence of the electors but a further fact tbat about 200 voters (or more than 15 per cent. of the entire elec'orite) did not visit the polling stations at all is not so creditable. Allowing for voters who have left the district or aied since July last, or otherwise rendered themselves unable to attend, surely the number quoted is not explained for, and it is a pity that so many indifferent ones should reside in a locality where so much depends upon the issues of a political battle. We hope, when another similar contest takes place.that strong efforts wiIl be made to rouse that indifferent elA. inent to a sense of its dar.y in the body politic, and thus mako the electorate one undivided whole, or, at any rate, two com- pact components. There is more to be feared from half-heartedness and indifference than from sheer weakueas on the part of either party. -0-
rSTRADYFODWG SCHOOL BOARD…
rSTRADYFODWG SCHOOL BOARD AND ITS CLERK AND SUPERINTENDENT. The members of the Ysrradyfodwj; School Board met in solemn conclave, on Mondav afternoon, at their Offices, Pentre, for the purpose of considering the large number of applications which had come to hand for appointment to the joint offices of clerk and superintendent to the board. The salary 1 ottered was X200 per annum, and for the post there were no less than 148 applicants) the testimonials of most of whom being of a very high order, while one or two of the gentlemen who offered their services had even acquired the high scholastio degree of Masters of Arts. Well, if M.A.'s cannot aspire to positions higher than a parochial post for which a modest sum of £200 a rear is offered by way of emolument, it certainly suggests to our mind that the classical world is rapidly becoming over-populated, and that a glut in this respect l,ke in anv other means degeneration of quality in del ference to quantity,
