PCNTYPRIDD GUARDIANS.
PCNTYPRIDD GUARDIANS. SIR, Tt ia with pleasure I read yoor remarks i. last. week's issue in referenoe to the proposed appointment of settlement officer for the Pontypridd Union. It is fall time that some measures should be tiken to relieve the ratepayers of the enormous expenses now incurred in connection with the re- moval of paupers to their respective parishes. The, present praotioe of allowing the collectors of th. poor ratl's of the several parishes to do the work ia very extravagant. Just assume for a moment that there were three paupers residing in three different parishes of the Pontypridd Union who were to be removed to three adjacent parishes according to, the present system the three collectors would have to visit the several parishes in the first instance to make the neoesanry enquiries for the removal; then again in removing the pauper, very often three, if not morp, visits are necessary when there are doubtful cases; thus, each incurring a budget of expenses. Now, sir, it appears to me that if a settlement officer for the union was elected at a fix,d s*l*ry. one journey would often be suffioient to settle several cases which now require the ab- sence from duty of the various collectors in the- union, without taking into consideration the gavinz of the ratepayers' m..Dey. When the matter will be discussed et the forthcoming board meeting, it is to be hoped one of the guardians at least will act in accordance with your suggestion to move for a return of all n one) a expended during the last three years in the removal of paupers, and the prosecu- tion of those ho deLRe. t their wives, children, or as?ed parent?, leaving them chargeable tQ f am lnformed BlfM> that if our oat-door would hi8m«T pl8™ed' so™ startling disclosure, would be made. Let me cite two instances only Irw, has only three children residing ia one of the parishes has been the recipient of over five pounds during the last six months, and is en- gaged daily with his avocation in the other oase a. man who baa been subject to rheumatism for a time has recsived over thirty shillings worth of milk and over two pounds worth of meat, without taking into consideration hie weekly allowance, which ii more than thousands of hard-working men are ab1. to enjoy, during the last six months, and this man. 8«en .walking da.ly in the streets occom- panied by his canine favourites. Surely the rate- payers oan naturally ask where are our relieving officers, and what are our relief committees doing? The Abstract for the last six months has appeared. again without the detailed income and expenditure of each parish. When will the ratepayers of the- union awaken from their lethargy.and demand a full. inquiry into the administration of parochial finane". and sat plemeat the etTo at of the new guardians i." reducing the extravagant expenditure ia the Pont- ypridd Union ? Tears, (to., BATBPAYEH.

— I THE SUNDAY NUISANCK ON THE: TUMBLK. Si a,—I think a word or tMo of praise is due to Mr Superintendent Matthews for- effecting so great a change for the better upon the Tumble, Pontypridd, on Sundays. We all regret to be obliged to confess the Tumble has been for some years a resort for those who desecrate the Sabbith On Sundays most of the public-houses I epen their doors (to fhe bona-fide traveller?/' and do a roaring trade. On Sundays- the breaks do better than on any other days On Sundays they are allowed to dl-cbarge and re-load their living cargoes opposite the public houses, and remain there until they got re-loaded (which, of course. is some time), before making a return journey. On Sundays you see more drunkenness and hear more swearing than on all the other days put together, but now we have reason to be thankful that a decided change for the better has taken place. Last Sunday and last Sunday week this change was most marked. Everything so quiet and orderly, no noise, no drunkenness, public house doora closed. I thank most heartily those who have brought this change about, and who kindly received from the Rev. W. Parry a petition, signed by several in Pontypridd, soliciting their attention to the condition of this part of the town on Sundays. I also feel that we are indebted to the Rev, Mr Parry for his forethought in getting up the petition, and presenting it to the proper authority. I am, &c., VERITAS.

The meeting had been specially convened for the purpose of considering the new modifications proposed by the Home Secretary in certain of the rules proposed by the committee. W» understand that the modifications were not acceptable to the owners committee, and that possibly arbitra- tion may have to be resorted to, under the provisicm, of the Mines Regulation Act.
