MR B.GZORGB'sMIDICA.L PREPARATIONS.— With all the advantages of wide publicity, articles in them- selves worthless can have no enduring hold on the public; but if they be of value, then it only requires to make them known in order to create and maintain for them the advantages of public demand. This has been the case pre-eminently with Mr George's Medical Preparations-notably his Enropa's Infant Powders, which have found their.way throughout the United Kingdom, the English Colonies, and the United States, and arc appreciated by all heads of families who administei them to their little ones. Mr George, having found a remedt for the many ailments incidental to infants, deserves the acknowledgement of the public for bis enwrprise in making his preparationt known, and we are glad to hear that in addition tc the gratification he must feel by the many testi- monials he receives of the efficaoy of his Infants' Powders and Cough Balsam, his commercial re ward is secured.—Iferthyr Telepraph, May 11,1887 CORNS CORNS! ESCAPADE OF BOY HOUSEBREAKERS.
ESCAPADE OF BOY HOUSEBREAKERS. The Coventry City magistrates have had before' tlltilU a remarkable case in which three boys, thooideeb only JO years of age, wore charged with breaking into an office and stealing c3. Two of the young thieves, named Short and Vernon, conceived the idea of entering the premises of a local engineering linn, and having enlisted the services of a third Itia, named Craddock, as a scout, they climbed over the wall and began operations. Finding their progress barred by a locked door they drew the staple, and made their way along a pas-age until they came to the office window, and smashing a pane of glass in this they slid back a bolt and clambered in. In A. drawer they found the key of the safe, .and in open- ing this receptacle they discovered a bag of money which they appropriated, and then decamped. Oil reaching the outside of the premises, they tossed up which should reward Craddock, and Shorfc winning, Vernon paid the lad 2s. 6d. The nexb morning the three boys met, and .went by tiam to Kenilworth, where they set about spending the money as fast as possible. The magistrates found some diffi- culty in deciding how to punish the lads. Crad- dock, who had given evidence, was discharged,, and the others were ordered to be birched.
----.------A BARBAROUS CUSTOM.
A BARBAROUS CUSTOM. SUOCKISO HUMAN SACBIFICKS. Information of a shocking sacrifice of human beings has just been received from West Africa, and shows the existence at places not under control of the British colonial authorities of some barbar- ous customs. According to the information to hand, at appears that at Grand Jack, on the Wesb. Coast, a son of the king died, and in accordance with the custom of the country, human sacrifices had to be made. These were to extend over two or three days. On the first day two victims, men- of the tdbù, were selected, and were compelled to drink a poisonous liquid known as "sass water," made from the sass tree of the country. This water induces vomiting and diarrhoea, or else kills the one who drinks it. In the present, case, the two unfortunate beings, after having partaken oi the water, had their hands tied behind them, and were then flung into the surf. The surf in this part of the coast breaks on the beach in gigantic rollers cr waves. The men, therefore, after being thrown into the water, were soon afterwards pitched on to the beach again. No sooner, however, had they been cast upon the shore, than a number of the natives who had assembled on, the beach rushed at them with sharp-pointed knives, stabbing them as hard as they could. In this barbarity both women and children took part as well as men, the first-named being particularly ferocious. It is scarcely necessary to state that the wretched victims were soon stabbed to death. Four other natives were to be sacrificed in the same way on the following day, but,, the master of an English trading vessel who was near, and who knew the king or chief personally, remonstrated with him at the terrible barbarity. The place is independent, though the chief flies the British flag, and in his remonstrance the captain told the chief to haul the flag down, as under it no such terrible atrocity should be perpetrated. The chief, who seemed to feel the reproach keenly, sneaked off, muttering that it was the country custom. Not- withstanding the reproof, however, the sacrifice ot the four poor wretches took place in the same manner as fche previous two. Tho captain of the trading vessel could do nothing beyond expressing his abhorrence at the inhuman conduct of the natives. Grand Jack is not a great distance from the English Gold Coast settlement, but it is nofc part of the colony otherwise such bnrbarotn coef, tome would not be permitted.. Ii!
