Mr Burt, M.P., predicts son.-us^cq-'rfqucn- oes in the rnatf- r oft.1w intention of the North- umberland Miners' Association to discontinue the payment of his salary as member. In a circular on the subject he says he lias felt that payment of members is the only true and juit principle, aud that if the system breaks down in Northumberland it will probably be shaken, it not destroyed elsewhere. Mr Burt, however, made no appeal to the mm, leaving them to decide for themselves. It parliament were deprived of its labour representatives (and this is what is meant by the action of the Northumberland miners) the lo-ss to the country will be a serious one. --n- A MONOPOLY OF GRACE IN A COUNTRY CHAPEL. Anti-diluvian Cardiganshire boasts of a little village known as Llochryd, nestling gndgly on the banks of the river Tivy. At this place a congregational chapel has existed for many years, the members of which wor- shipped harmoniously until latterly, when disputes a:o-e on the ir.uqh-abuSed question of temperance. Dr Pan Jones, in noticing the unplea- sant incident of the split in « recent issue of the Celt, Et^.te^: — "A gulf exists between the two chapels so that none can pass from one to the other, and that the Holy- Ghost would not be admitted into the new tabernacle unless He promised never to enter the del one," -0- HIGHER EDUCATION IN WALKS. Welsh educational feeling has tHken a ne* :*nd most important departure. Sincj then things have changed, and instead of charity and dame schools we have now our colleges and higher I el grade institutions. But this is not enough Wales is marching onward; the seventh standard boy finds that he must have some- thing better and more solid than the paltry cnniculum cfelt-mentary schools, and he seems to thirst fur a higher and more scientific education. Those in higher walks of circum- -are equally forward, and instead of colleges Wales wishes to send her sons a'.(d r, daughters to a Welsh university. Artulygyld, writing on the subject of the conference in the "South Wales Echo," savs there is only one feeling in the breasts of all who took part in it, and that is a feeling of perfect satisfaction. It was certainly a plea- sant reai nfe to see every shade of political colour amtlng the Welsh legislators, evidently prepared to heartily co-operate for the common educationP1 good of the Principality. THE PONTYPRIDD MANSLAUGHTER CASS. At the Glamorgan Assizes, held at Cardiff, on Saturday, (before Mr Justice Stephen), the charge of manslaughter againat William Smith, of Ponty- pridd, was disposed of, the accused being sent- tenoed to a fortnight's hard labour, to commence from the begining of the assizes .-Prisoner, on hearing'the sentence, said.—" I thank you my Lord."

LOCAL & DISTRICT INTELLIGENCE PONTYPRIDD. THE DOG SHow.-The Pontypridd and Rhonddi Valleys Dog, Poultry, Pigeon, Cage Bird, and Cat show was held at the M irket Hall, Pontypridd, on Thursday last, when entries to the number of over 1,500 were present. Tbe prize list amounted to S about £ 250. The show was a pronounced success in every respect, no less than 3,000 persons visit- ing the exhibition during the day. Great praise is due to the active and courteous hon. Becretarys, Mejsrs. J C. Spickett and R. A. Lewis, for the excellent manner in which they discharged their ardnojs duties. It was unanimously re- solved to oppose the clause in the Bute Docks Bill whi"h took -way the control of the rivers within t e jurisdiction of the Board. The D. p ity-Cierk (Air Kenshole) having explained that no reply had been received from Mr Nixon to the application of the Board for n site for a hospital on hio land near Cilhaul, the offer of the chairman, on behalf of Lord Aberdare, of a piece of land in that neigh- bourhood for the same purpose,it the rate of jE132 per acre, was accepted. It transpired that the Board would not be in a position to supply the highest part cf U1sk'D With water. It was re- solved tout the engineers be asked to orepiroplans for utilising the water of the Ffrwd Brook. A letter was read from Mr Robert Evans, the retir- ing member for the South WarJ, intimating that it w '.s not hia intention to seek re-election. It transpired that the following are the retiring meinbeis this year :—West Ward—Messrs T. Yeo and T. Edwards; the litter does net seek re- election. East ward--Messrs W. Lit:le find- Greenhow. South Ward—Mr R. Evans, who does not seek reflection. The medical offi cer's quar- terly report ending December, 1887, was read, from which it appeared that the total number of births in the'whole district was 121 (56 males and 69 females)., giving a biii: -rvte of 35'6 per 1,000 prr annum upon a population of 13,860; the total nnmber of deaths in the. entire diptrict was 51, g.ving a death-filte of 14'4 per 1,000 per annum UiOn an estimated population of 13,860. Collections wore made at the close of each service in aid of the society. — On Monday evening a. public meeting in aid of the same society wis held in the English Chyrcfc, when the vicar gave a very lucid, interesting, and stimulating sketch cf general Church work, especially ia reference to homf opt r- ations, and made an earnest appeal on beba:f of the Pastoral Aid Society. Last year the parish received aid from the society to tho amount cf .£180, and sent to the society by wiy of collec- tieD, and subscriptions j656. PONTYPRIDD FREE LIBRART. Messrs Isaaae Pitman & Sons have just presented to the Free Library a copy of each of their excellent books on phonography. As there are in the town so many young men now aspiring to a knowledge of ahort-hand; this addition to the books of the library will be much appreciated. THE Pontypridd Local Board Election* less. TO THE RATEPAYERS AND OWNERS OB6 PROPERTY IN THE GRAIG WARD. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.-Having been JJ requested by several ratepayers and owners to offer myself as a candid--ite to fill the vacincy at the at the above Board occasioned by the retirement of Mr Henry Hopkins, I have after due cons deration* consented to do so. As I am living in the Ward, and have frequent; occasion to visit the different parts of the ward, t am well acquainted with all itei sanitary and other requirements. Being an owner and ratepayer, and also representing companies having a very heavy stake in the district, it will be to my interest to see that the operations of the Board are carried out as economically as possible, with d ie regard to effi- ciency. With reference to Public i mprovements, I should advocate that arrangement" s onll be made with all owners of property affected thereby before such improvements are carried out, and if e ected I shall at all times do what I can to avoid litigation. Some persons have taken objection to my candi- dature on the ground that I am a public officer, but inasmuch as the office I hold has cnthiug what- ever to do with the Local Board, I maintain that this objection has no force whatever. Oa the contrary, the experience I have gained as a public officer during the past 24 years will be of great assistance to me in tha discharge of my duties as a member of the Local Board. I have for many years taken cor siderabl 5 inter- est in all public movements in Pontypridd and dis- trict, and I can without egotism lay claim to having done my share towards the improvement of the town in every way.
