THE TREHERBERT CLUB CASE.
THE TREHERBERT CLUB CASE. At the Pontypridd police-court, on Wednesday, Mr Ignatius Williams gave the decision ot the Bench in the case of the Treherbert Workman's Clun," of which David Owen Evan3 is the manager. The case was heard at the Ystrad police-court a. fortnight ago, and was adjourned until Wednesday to give the Bench time to consider their decision. Mr Rhys prosecuted on behalf of the police, and Mr Simons defended. The Stipendiary said: Tins is a ca.se in which David OtVen Evans is charged with selling beer without a license. It is admitted this was done. The question then was wbether he did so a3 manager of a band fide club. The case had been adjoarned to give him an opportunity of examining the books, and also of reading a letter from his learned friend, Mr Fowler, the Stipendiary of Swan- sea, in which he sets forth several points which are in his opinion the requisites of a bonâ, fide club. Without committing himself to the approval of every letter in that opinion, he did substantially approve of j Mr Fowler's views. One thing Mr Fowler lays down is that a bond fitle club must not be put up for the mere purpose of drinking. Now as a matter of fact the chief, if not the so c, occupation of this club was drinking. The. defendant had put in a cash book. In examining, that he found that pretty well the whole custom at the place was on Sundays. The club was established on the 9th of July, which was a free drinking day. The following Sunday they began to receive a large attiotint- ap wards of X3. On each day of that week, after Sunday, the takings were very small. The following Sunday the takings } amounted to £ 3 183 2d. Then followed small amounts a^ain, and on two days in that week no money at all was taken. The following Sunday upwards 01 t4 was taken. It appeared evident then thit when the public-bouses were closed this club flourished, but on week days scarcely any business was done. It seemed tsvideut to ilinl that the club was established solely to meet the craving for drink on Sundays. That was one point. Another point mentioned by Mr Fowier waii that the accounts should be pioeerly kept. Had th is been done? He considered io had not. One thing very noticeable was that up to a certain date everythiag of a documentary character was in the handwriting of H, R. Jones. Although that gentle- "man was not pre:int on many occasions nevertheless tiie r.-p jrta oi the meetings hold in his absence are all entered in his handwriting. The only conclusion he ooold arrive at was that someone muse have given Jones the repmt* and that he wrote them in the book i on heart Then in reference to the nnconuts, he found by ming up'tha entries some £ 85 5s had been ps.i/1 ,i.J1e.v!llyr.'s Bt-«sw*ry Company for beer sup £ >lt««i t') tue club, but the account bock only con- tains outrie3 tVl" £ £ i odd paid «..> that company. This shows a deficiency of £11 as compared with the -other m: It wa.3 jtive-i in evidence that vvh>:n *r?r Vad inn out a supply waa obtaiaed from a neighbouring brewery. Theiv is no entry oi any such purchases. Another x>st .A Mr Fowler's is that ♦h.- managpr shall have no •-rsonal interest in the club beyond what was piid b :u as manager. In this case the manager mc<jt; Ivlr .Tones. Tney seemed to have talked the mr.ttcr ove1:. The result was tha.t the •fjawii.tjer took the IWIl5tj at Truheibert, furnished it, and brought some; hairais of beer trLm Cardiff to stact with. Mr Jones brings tome cut and dried snales. It was clear to him that defendant had a very isah itantial interest in the cluh. There was piacti- «ral!y no check upon him. He could him-seli drink as much as he liked at the expense ot the club. All ■itieve things convinced him that it was a spurious ciab ished for the purpose of Sunday drinking. The question was what should be done? Luckily these tfclubs sirs not numerous in the neighbourhood, s? that he did not consider it necessary to comply with Mr Rh;¡u'ö wish to impose the full penalty ot £ .">0. What *4>oy aad determined te do was to impose a fins of 4i2» *costs.—Mr Rhys asked for an advocate's fee Abi« h was granted, and aico applied that all the iiooks aud documents should be impounded as it was &hei: liitention to take proceedings against others <GQt!t .pd with the clcb.—The Stipendiary said he did J.vi know whether ue had the power to do so.— Mr Sitid it was very important that the books sbonl'l bo kept, as they shouid proceed against the pretended sj^retary and otLersfor aiding and abetting. The titerk (Mr Stoekwood) said he would kceu the for one «eek.—Mr Rhys applied th it all drink isnnd on the p.-eanies should be conhsc ted His worship consented.

IW Extraordinary Care of a Cough of Six Years' standing, declared before a Commissioner to Administer Oaths in the Supreme Court of Judicature, England. IEEMtY JAMES GAMMAGE, of j 116 & 117, Widemarsh-street, in the City of Hereford, Contractor and Decorator, do solemnly and sin- cerely declare as follows 1 About eight years ago 1 had a severe attack of rheumatic fever, from which, when I had recovered, I had a. bad cough, and the medical man who attended me, who is one of the Visit- ing Surgeons to the Hereford Infirm- ary, informed me that I nevercouid be thoroughly cured from it. 2 From that time until about two years ago I have suffered more or less from the same cough, which at times was worse than at others. I esjieciolly was affected by it in the mornings when I got up, when sometimes I coughed until I was almost suffocated, and I thought I should be stifled. 3 During those years I consulted several medical men, from following whose advice ■ obtained no relief, and I have taken various p atent, medicines with the same result, and I had given up all hope of alleviating the couyh. 4 Abont two years ago I was recom- mended by a fiiend to buy a bottle of George's Cough Balsam, And although I had no fai'h in its proving efficacious, I g«ve way to my friend's importunities, and purchased a bottle. 5 From the First Bottle of George's Cough Balsam I took I felt greatly relieved, and I bought another bottle, which I took, and which effectually cured my cough, and eirce that time I had no return of the couerh. 6 If I find I have taken cold I take a dose of the Balsam as a preventative, and I am now, and bave been since I took George's Cough Balsam As free from Cough as I ever was in my life. And I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true, and by virtue of the provi- sions of an Act mtde and passed in the fifth and sixth years of the reign of his late Majesty King William IV, inti- tuled "An Act to repeal an Act of tho present Sessi. n of Parliament, inti- t. led an Act for the more effectuat Abolition of Oaths and Affirmations taken and made in various depart- ments of the State, and to pubstitnte Declarations in lieu thereof, and for the more entire suppression of volun- tary and extrajudicial Oaths and Affir- mations, and to make other provisions for the abolition of unnecessary Oaths." Taken and declared at 16. Beelford- row, in the County of Middlesex, this 9th dav of October, 1880, before me, C. I ocke Vclvs, a Commissioner to Administer Oaths in the Supreme Couit of Judicature.
