Boilermakers' Society. THE MONTHLY REPORT. The monthly report of the Boilermakers' Society states that there are not any very good grounds for anticipating another period of great prosperity. The vast amount of shipbuilding accomplished during the last six years must have its influence on the future, and if an increase of trade does take place it is likely to be of a fleet- ing character. It is better for the members of the socialy to make up their minds that the feverish activity which prevailed in the trade during the two or three years prior to the close of 1901 is not likely to be witnessed in the near future. The steadying influence of lowered freights is leavening the trade, and the men should husband their resources and be pre- pared to meet the future. The membership of the society now stands at 48,562.

SOUTH WALES QUOIT LEAGUE. BARRY VICTORIOUS ALL ROUND NEXT SATURDAY'S FINALS. On Saturday Barry completed the series of games leading up to the final for the gold medals in connection with the South Wales League of the Quoiting Association. They were signally successful in being able to ad- minister the first defeat Ton (Ystrad) have yet received on their own ground, with a margin of 24 points. Both the second and first teams have thus won every game in the league con- test.s. On Saturday next the matches for the medals will take place at Aberdare, and Barry will make a bold bid to secure both sets of medals. FOOTBALL AT BARRK. HOPE BEYOND JUSTIFICATION. The annual meeting of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Association Football League was held on Saturday at the Alexandra Hotel, Cardiff, when the new local club, to be called Barry United, made application for admission. In supporting the application, Mr Hood, the Secretary, remarked that several members of the Barry Working Men's Club (sic) were members of the new club, and it promised to be one of the strongest in the league. It is t■> be regretted that this confident hope is not cherished by many others besides Mr Hood. One important element lacking will be the necessary funds to carry on an organisation which will he one of the strongest in the league," and about this there is considerable doubt, especially having regard to age, experience, and funds of clubs like Aberdare, Aberaman, Rogerstone, and Porth. Unless some prodigious effort is made Barry will this year sink into an insignificant struggling position in the League. "OLD BARRIANS" CLUB. A very representative meeting of Barry County School old boys was held at the Glamorgan Res- taurant, Barry Dock, on Friday evening last under the presidency of Mr II. Davies. The business down for the evening was that of forming an Ass ciation footLall club f. r the coming season. This item quickly dealt with, and the following officers were elected :-Captain, D. Garrett; vice- captain, B Bumfcril and secretary, H. Davies, Highinead," Barry. It was decided to enter for the Penarth and District junior cup, and other suitable competitions. The secretary was also instructed to make an applicatioa for the use of the Jubilee field, which the Barry Urban District Council have recently acquired. This field would be quite suitable for the club, as the school is close at hand, which would probably be the team's headquarters. Many old scholars of the school have expressed themselves willing to join the team, which will undoubtedly be among the smartest in the district. Application should be made at once to the secretary for fixtures. CARDIFF AND DISTRICT ASSOCIATION LEAGUE. A general meeting of the above league was held on Monday evening at the Old Dolphin Hotel, Cardiff, under the presidency of Mr E. W. Wathen. At the mee'ing fixtures were arranged by the secretaries of the different clubs assembled. The following Bjrry clubs were reported to have joined the league First division, Barrry District aud the Cadoxton Rovers third division, Barry Dock Albions, Barry Wyndiianis> and Barry Old Boys. BASEBALL. BARRY DOCK CONSERVATIVES v. CARDIFF FELLOWSHIP. The Barry team journed to Roath Pask, Ca: diff, on Saturday, to play the Fellowship in the first round for the South Wales Challenge Shield, Barry Dock experienced a comparative walk-over, coming out victorious by an innings and 50 runs,

BEFORE THE BENCH MONDAY'S POLICE COURT CASES. A BUTCHER'S "CHANCE" TRADE. Wm. Wardj butcher, Barry Dock, sued Chas. Loubeck for 26s. damages alleged to have been sustained through defendant quitting his ser- Tice without adequate notice. Ward explained that defendant had been a haulier in his em- ploy. One Saturday recently defendant left between 7 and 8 o'clock in the evening and never returned to work. The Clerk How do you make out that you suffered 26s. damage ? Ward Because I had to do his work. The Clerk How do you make it that amount P What damage have you suffered ? Ward I couldn't tell because I dont know what boat we have lost. The Clerk Have you lost custom ? Ward: Ours is a "chance" trade; catching boats coming in. Defendant: In the first place you say that I left between 7 and 8 o'clock. Ward Yes. Defendant: That's a lie. Mr T. R. Thompson Now, now, I won't have any of that sort here. Don't make a re- mark of that kind again. Ward, in answer to further questions, said the actual negotiations for the engagement had been entered into with his sister he had men- tioned nothing about notice himself. He fur- her said that defendant went drinking. The case was put aside for a short time to enable the sister to be present, but Ward re- turned afterwards without her. Mr T. R. Thompson I am afraid you have not proved your contract. You may have the case adjourned for a week if you like, provided you pay the man's expenses. You have also made an allegation for drunkenness against the man, and if that is true you ought to be glad to-get rid of him. Ward thereupon asked for an adjournment on the terms mentioned, and this was agreed upon. A WARNING TO SHOPKEEPERS. The first prosecution under the recent Shop Hours Act at Barry took place. Inspector D. Morris on paying a visit to the shop of Mr D. John, butcher, Holton-road, found two young persons engaged there. Defendant said he did not know of the exis- tance of the Act. Mr T. R. Thompson: It is no defence to say that you are ignorant of the law. A fine of 10.. including costs was imposed. A HOUSE OF ILL-FAME. Police-constable Poolman gave sufficient evi- dence to justify the issue of a warrant for the apprehension of Gertrude Martism, for keeping a disorderly house at 17, Upper Pyke-street, Barry Dock. The constable watched the premises and subsequently entered them and gave details of what he saw. MELINDA IN TROUBLE. Melinda Jones, who appeared in court for the 12th time, responded to the familiar charge of drunkenness and disorderly conduct. Sergeant Phillips gave evidence of finding the defendant in Greenwood street at 11.15 p.m. on 7th inst. very dcunk, cursing and swearing," with several men around her. After going up the street she lay on the pavement. Melinda pleaded inuocence. She had been out working all that day, she had, to keep her little daughter, and was not drunk. Her record was against her but she she was dealt with leniently, being fined 2s 6d. THE DEAR OLD KING." Ellen Morgan, the possessor of a record of 20 convictions, admitted without a blush that she had been drunk and disorderly on the 9th inst. It was Coronation night, sir, and I drank the King's health, like many others. I'm very pleased that the old King is better he is a dear old gentlemen. I'm very sorry if I drank too much." Mr T. R. Thompson: You drank it not wisely, but too well. I don't know what we shall have to do if you go on like this. You had seven days a month ago, now you'll have to go to prison for an other seven. NAUTICAL DRUNKS. Thomas Webb fined 58, Michael Sullivan 5s, Eugene O'Heame 7s 6d, Thomas Began 7s 6d had all deposited these amounts to secure their release in order to proceed to sea. Martin Dunn was placed in the dock. "Were you drunk and disorderly on the 15t.h ?" "Yes, sir; I must have been because I don't remember anything about it." "Where you drunk on the following day, too ?" "Yes, I h d a little money, and was locked up the next day again." Mr T. R. Thompson: So you had a second "go." Prisoner: I'm very sorry, sir. I have good discharges here, sir. A fine of 5s was imposed. William Flynn, were you drunk and dis- orderly ou the 16th ?" This was the question addressed the next sailor. Guilty, sorr (replied the Hibernian) I fell in with a shipmate, sorr, and got onrooly." "You are fined 5s." Police-constable Poolman and Police-ser- geant R. H. Thomas both declared that when they asked Thomas Wylde to go home he gave a point-blank refusal, He wanted to be locked up and succeeded. Fined 5s. "A QUESTION OF DEGREE." F Patrick Trainer said "Ho, sir." when asked if he was guilty of being drunk and disorderly on the 16th. William Evans (415) proved differently, and Inspector Morris made assurance doubly sure. Trainer then admitted that he had had a few pints, and he wanted to bring witnesses to prove that he was a boilermakers' helper, and could work, too. A fiue of 10s was imposed. "JOE AND KATE." They are man aud wife. The husband, a man of fine physique, who has served his Queen and King and country. He was charged with being guilty of disorderly con- duct, while the wife was in addition charged with drunkenness. Police-constable Owen proved the disorder, which was denied. A fine of 7s 6d was imposed. Then it came Kate Taylor's turn. There were three separate charges of the same kind, two of which she admitted, aud the third denied. Police-constable Jones proved the latter. She was locked up and detained in the Police Station until she became sober.

MISS JENNgR AT A SALE. PIR OTJWSTING- STILL PROTESTING. On Saturday last Mr D. T. Alexander con- ducted a sale of The Grange, Wenvoe, and other property of the estate of the late Mr W. W. Nell. Twyn Andrew and two cottages were disposed of to Mr Oliver Thomas, Wenvoe, for £670.rhe Grange was withdrawn at £ 7,000. Miss Jenner protested against the sale, claiming the ownership of two lots, but Mr Alexander explained that the properties had been properly transferred by legal process.

A Dangerous Practice. TELEGRAPH MESSENGER RIDES INTO THE DOCK BASIN. SAD DEATH OF A LAD. Thomas Messer (15), telegraph messenger connected with the Barry Post Office, met his death through riding a bicycle over the quay wall at that place on Sunday morning. Messer was sent with a telegram to Barry Island, and was riding one of the Government cycles over the dock road. When approaching the gates between the No. 1 dock and basin it is believed that he attempted to ride over. The entrance on to the gates is less than a yard in width, and on either side is the stone coping of the dock walls. Failing to make the gate entrance thb machine went over the edge of the wall, pre- cipitating the ridpr headlong into the basin. A French sailor, who witnessed the occurrence, threw a lifebuoy towards the spot, but Messer did not come to sight. Then a boatman named John Jones, of 58, Station-street, Barry Dock, grappled for the body, and succeeded after a time in securing both the boy and the machine. An attempt was made by Piermaster Bastian to restore animation by artificial means, but this failed, and the body was subsequently conveyed to 100, Woodland-road, where his father-John Messer, coaltrimtner—resided. It is a common practice for lads and others to cycle over the gates and even along the sill of the dock walls, gates and even along the sill of the dock walls, which are about a yard in width. Reece, deputy coroner, evidence of identification was given by John Messer, the boy's father. The body of his son was brought home on Sunday morning abeut 11 o'clock. Louis Hermas (whose evidence was interpreted by Mons. Danjou), the seaman who witnessed the occurrence, said Messer had passed him about 15 yards riding his machine when he attempted to get on the bridge. Failing, he then tried to get off and had one foot off the pedals when he went over the quay wall. Witness at once threw a life buoy out to him, but after the bey went down first he never appeared again on the surface until grappled. As Messer went over the side of the wall he cried for help and witness also raised an alarm. John Jones, a boatman, recovered the body. (The Coroner Are there any regulations posted up against people riding over these gates ? Mr Williams It is a very frequent occurrence for people to ride over these gates. A number of lads do so, not particularly telegraph boys. P.C. Hamlet, when called, said be he believed Messer to be a very poor rider. The Coroner Do you stop these boys riding over the dock gates ? P.C. Hamlet: We caution them very often. The Coroner: You have no power to stop them ?-No, sir, but we both caution and advise them. Mr Nicholas Baitian, piermaster, said he used means to restore animation for about 20 minutes, but Dr. Billups arrived on the scene and pronounced life extinct. A Juryman Did he do this after carefully examining the body ? Mr Bastian: Yes, he examined the lad in every way. The Coroner, in summing up, said he thought the postal authorities might in future give in- structions to their lads not to ride over the dock gates. It would also be well for the dock authorities to stop people riding over these gates. A Jury man wished to add a rider that there was no blame attached to the dock officials. Another Juryman: That is not necessary, there has been no complaint against them. The jury, therefore, returned a verdict of "Accidental Death," adding no rider. Mr Williams from the Dockmaster's office represented the Barry Co., and Mr J. E. Price, the local postmaster, was also present.
