THE CRUEL TURK IN CRETE. _.-
THE CRUEL TURK IN CRETE. IT is plainly the duty of every Liberal to agitate for the deliverance of the Candiote Christians from the Moslem yoke. Lord Salisbury and his halting associates appear content to let outrage succeed outrage in Crete without making a determined and decisive endeavour to set up a system of order and good government. The island has a sad history. It has been a hunting ground for centuries of the oppressor. Venice, Turkey, and Egypt have trodden it down. In the great Greek emancipation of 1830, Crete was left out in the cold, for no logical? reason. Farseeing Viscount Palmerstown, and many other good Liberals of that day, prophesied all too truly what would be the resultant of such a partial policy, and Prince Leopold, it may be remembered, refused to occupy the new throne of Greece because Crete was excluded from the kingdom. Crete, by creed and race, by topographical con- ditions and historic association, belongs to Greece, and not to Turkey; and so long as the unspeakable Turk is permitted to work his wicked will upon the island there can never be contentment there. Nature demands the re-union of ancient ties. Now, again, anarchy is directly provoked by the tyrannous aspect of affairs. Two years back the perennial Cretan question might have had easy and final settlement on the only prin- ciple at all feasible. But the occasion was lost, and Turkey won prestige out of the Grecian war. So now that there has been another ebullition, the whole case is con- siderably more difficult of settlement. We Britishers have more than ever a cause for complaint, above and beyond our abiding sympathy with right and love of freedom. Some of our fellow-subjects have been slain under the very eyes of the Turkish Governor, if not with the approval of his entourage. The hour is, therefore, favourable for showing a firm front. If Her lajety's Government will rouse themselves to act vigorously and with unmistakeable intent the best may be made of a bad job. We are fearful of the fatal inclining of Lord Salisbury to vaccila- tion and the policy of drift. Let Liberalism everywhere exert itself to rouse him. EDUCATIONALLY, Barry is progressive. The schools of the town, with their modern equipments and well-trained staff, prove this to be a fact. The School Board, always to the fore in education reform, have recently taken over control of the functions hitherto exercised by the now defunct Science and Art Committee, and will in future carry on the duties of that body in conjunction with the Evening Continuation Classes. The syllabus containing the subjects to be taught next session-which opens on Monday next—has just been issued. The subjects taught com- prise of commercial and material benefit, to teach which an efficient staff has been engaged. The fee per subject for the session has been fixed at the nominal sum of 2s 6d, the object being to debar no person from attendance. It now remains with the public to appreciate the invaluable advantages offered. IN another column appears a letter from the Rev. J. C. -Honey upon the subject of the widespread indignation caused by the recent decision of the local magistrates in the case of the application for a provisional license for the proposed Osborne Hotel. The suggestion made in this column last week has been adopted by the rev. gentleman ia a whole- hearted manner, and he now invites rate- payers to sign a requisition to the Chairman of the District Council in favour of calling a town's meeting to consider the matter. Largely the question is one which affects the future status of our town in a representative character. We have no doubt, therefore, that the requisition will be extensively signed and the meeting called by the Chair- man of the District Council as a duty which even that gentleman cannot forego. -I
