POLITICAL SUMMARY. The repoifs of the reverses of the Russians in the neigh- bourhood of S:,tistria thicken, an'd 'are-not, we su.pect, altogether destitute of foundation when we consider the various channels tit-rough w hich the information has reach- ed tics country. The reports of the ill success of the Rns.ians derive no small crtnfinnation from thi. circom-taiice, for if any material advantage had been gained, the Rth.fari* would not have been slow to give it publicity. —Sir James Mackintosh Monday night ititicxhiceoi his motion respecting-our relations with Portugal, in a •speech of great power, and drew a frihl fl" picture of it),, internal state of that country, and of the wretch who now 11-11,I)s life functions of royalty in iha1 kingdom. The unfortunate young* man with a party went to spend the day at a house about three miles down the river, and between 5 and 6 o'clock went in to bathe, and after continuing in the river a few minutes, was seized with apoplexy, and within a few yards ot the: shore was seen to sink, A person who witnessed the scene immediately brought him to land, when medical aid was procured as soon as possible, but the vital spark had fled. The melancholy catastrophe itits caused considerable feeling in the town, as he was a young man much respected in his business.—Verdict — Died by the visitation of God in a tit of Apoplexy. — Died by the visitation of God in a tit of Apoplexy. On Tuesday last, the Lightning sloop, of 18 guns,1 was launched from Pembroke Dock Yard, and the weather being remarkably fine, a vast concourse of spectators assembled on the occasion. The space near the yard gates was literally filled with horses and ve- hicles of every description. About 5 o'cloch, the Earl Mountmorris, F. It. and S. A. and F, L.S. and a large party in two travelling carriages arrived at the master shipwright's house, in the Dock Yard, and after par- taking of some lefi-eslitiieiits, aliiiost imriiedi itdy pro- ceeded to the vessel, where the Countess of Mount- morris, in a graceful manner named her, sprinkling her hows with the juice of the grape, and at 40 minutes past 5, the pretty little ship glided forth from beneath the shed under w hich she was built, into the watn in a truly pledsant style, amidst the cheers of the multitude, as Mellon the water as the land. The following day- 1 0 she was taken into dock fur coppering, where also she will be rigged. p The anniversary Meetings of the Pemhroke Dock branch of the Seaman's friend, and Bethel Union Society, took place in the different dissenting chapels there during the past week. The service commenced on Sunday with an united communion at tiie Weslevan chapel, which was numerously attended. On Monday the anniversary sermon was preached at the Tabernacle by the RBV. Tlios. MILFORD, JUNE 4.—Friday last, being the Anniver- sary of King- Charles's Restoration, and the day on which the Society of Ancient Britons' Annual Dinner is held here, about 200 Members assembled at their Club Room, at the Coopers' Arms in this town, and preceded by the Hakin Amateur Band with colours flying, went in procession to Staynton Church, where in and appropriate sermon was preached on the occasion, by the Rev. Amos Crytnes, A. M. of Thornton; frojit whence they returned to a substantial and well served iip (litinei-, provided by the landlady, Mrs. Mumford, accoálpanied witll strong cwrvsda; and the afternoon was spent with tha greatest hilarity. Thehrig Kingstorl of Livet-poot, which took the fugitive hanker Stephenson on board, ofT bundy Island, and conveyed him with his accomplice Lloyd across the Atlantic, is now at anchor in the Men-ai Straits waiting for a cargo of slates. Six vessels A had taken a sittilliti. la lillir Port Penrhyn before this spring, from wh c,i we may infer that the expense of working the newly disco-, ered quarries in that coun- try is so great as to cause their disuse, or that the qua- lity of the material is. not so good as in Wales. The tariff seems to be inoperative-in preventing trade with Great Britain in this article at least. On Friday Inst, a very interesting and intelligent girl, aged twelve ypars, the daughter of the Rev. Robert Humphreys, Weslevan minister, while endea- vouring to step on shore from a boat in the river Tatf, at Cardiff", feii into the river, and was unfortunately drowned, Her body was not picked up for filiI hail an hour after the melancholy accident when every praise is due to Capt. The crew and passengers saved themselves iinrl their trifling amouunt of propeity. Nothing- can he more creditable to the school wherein be received his profession:-)} education. A certificate of hononr has also been awarded him. Last week W. Symui.ds, Esq. M. i), of Hereford, caught a salmon in the Wye, which proved to be an old fish that had not spawned, though the belly w; s full of spawn, a very unusually occurrence we believe at this period of the year, 'I he hain.on are now uore plentiful in the Wye than they have been for the Ja..t thirty years, a convincing proof of the obstruction the late Wear offered, and the benefits which have resulted from its removal, which every succeeding year will pro- bably increase. On Saturday morning last, a mare, belonging to :\1: Tippens, miller, of Monrrio-itb, was stolelÍ Ollt of the field in which she had been left over the night. On enquiry, it appeared that a man had been seen to ptller Monmouth in one direction with two horseS, and leave it in another with four, He was pursued, butMyLthoui success. On the following Wednesday, Mr, Jloherston the landlord of the King's Head, happened to he at Worcester, whtn he heard that a man had been taken up that morning on suspicion of stealing a mare, which was then in the stable. On g'oiiig to see her, he had little doubt that she was the same that hud been stolen f..dlll Mr, Típlwns, fie that information to the Magistrates, who ordered the prisoner to be detained until the property could be more distinctly identified. Mr. fippens, he;trin £ "an account of these circumstances from Mr. Robertson, oil his return fo Monmouth, immediately set out for Worces- ter, and us since returned; but the marc, it seems, is not his, although it is of the same colour, has the same marks, namely a white spot or the near foot, and a star on the forehead. The Iri(li!ct ;Izl(i character of the man in whose possession the mare is, leave 1 itile doubt that she was stolen; and this public, notice may be the means, perhaps, of discovering the owner. On Saturday week, John Somets, of the parish of Trevithen, Monmouthshire, w-is committed to tiie House | ot Correction at Usk, 011 a charge of entering the j dwelling-house of T. Palmer, of Monythusloyne, and stealiiig therefrom several loaves of bread.cheese, and two pair ot quartet boots, one pair of which was found onbim when taken. And on Monday the l8?h, Benj. Nicholas, of the same place, was committed for having been concerned in the same robbery, and another pair ot hoots, stolen at the same time, found 011 his person. —Nicholas, who was much atlecied by his awful situa- tion, stated ill extenuation of his guilt, that the things had been given him by Soincrs.v ho had previously pro. posed to him to knock down and rob the tirst person they should meet; he acknowledged, lunvi ver, that ire knew they could not be honestly cotr.e by, but said his wife and children were starving-, which was confirmed by the overseer, who attended at the Magistr.ite'sofhce for the purpose of having an examination taken as to Nicholas's parish. It appeared he had been discharged with riiii 1) v 0 t workmen, from one of the Iron W..rLs inTrevitben parish sernal weeks before, and that the contractor under ivliom he woiked bad withheld the wages due to him. Nicholas also stated that he had attended at the Magistrate's office six days before he could be heard, for the multitude of complaints which thronged the office door !—The day of the night the burglary was committed, his case had been deiermiiied in his favour; but the delay experienced, and the still further delay expected, in paying the wages awarded him, according to the adopted of late, and avowed by some of resorting to any means of avt)lilit),gor him, Nicho- las said, to despair. It is a curious circumstance, that the office ot the Magistrates is part of the house in which the burglary was committed. It is with pleasure we state, tliiat the fine spire of Ross Church has been completely restored to its ori- ginal beauty, and we trust will for ages continue to grace the landscape, and perpetuate the munificence of ttie 'I'Mitn of Ross," and tiit- gotiti taste of those under whose superintendauce the necessary repairs have been completed. Mr. J.
