CYCLING NOTES.I :o:
CYCLING NOTES. I :o: The railway companies are beginning to realize that cyclists are not to be totally iguored. It has been stated that the cost of organising the arrangements for attendants upon the < winner of the Bordeaux-Paris race was a matter of £ 200. In spealcing of the invention of the Dunlop tyre, Commerce says:—" The invention of this tyre in 1888 practically revolutionised the cy- cling trade, and went t great way towards making it the important industry it now is." Animals straying on the roadways are a source of danger to wheelmen. Within the last week two cases have come under our notice, one, a cyclist being thrown by a pig and the other by a cat, both resulting in broken bones. As a result of the great demand for rubber, and its growing scarcity, the forest administra- tors of India intend to plant an island in the contiguous Mergui Archipelago with rubber trees, with the view of meeting the demand for rubber. It is expected to place the product on the market in about five years after planting. i t. were under the impression that the fool- ish, habit of carrying children of tender years on a seat ilxed on the front of a bicycle had qnÜe died out, but we were forcibly impressed j liie other day that this was not so. When out riding we came across an idiot, proudlv ped- ailing his bicycle with two children on the handle bars., One is dangerous enough, but when it comes to risking the lives of two, stringent measures ought to be taken to stop the practice. There is nothing so annoying, or, for the matter of that, so dangerous, as to travel over greasy surfaces on a bicycle fitted with tyres that allow the machine to slip and slide. In order to prevent this it is necessary to have one's machine shod with reliable non-slippers such as the Dunlop Mnltiflex. These tyres have been thoroughly tested by the million in all kinds of weather, and over all kinds of sur- I faces, and the unanimous opinion is that they are the most reliabie on the market. j The much talked of sprint match between Jacquelin, the famous French flyer, and Major Taylor, the negro crack, drew an enormous crowd to the rare des Prince's track, Paris, in fact the gate receipts are given at £ 1,800. In the first trial Major" forced the Frenchman to lead but he could not force him to go all out until about GO yards from the tape and then lie failed to win, Jacquelin crossing the line a wheel ahead. In the second heat Taylor forced the pace but the ex-soldier reserving his energy j for the final dash again won, but this time by two lengths. Jacquelin is a champion in every sense of the word. — A somewhat peculiar case was recently heard at the Wandsworth County Court by Judge Hussd. A Richmond solicitor sued a firm of Bath Cycle makers for JG20, the value of a bicycle, and personal injuries sustained by him through the breaking of the machine. Although the defendants said that the machine was not guaranteed they swore it was constructed to carry a man of fourteen stone if reasonable wear and tear were allowed. His Honour how- ever thought the case came under the Sale of Goods Act, and that the bicycle did not come up to what was necessary, so he gave judgment for the Plaintiff with costs. Riders should never mount on any part of a hill which is labelled dangerous." A walk down may save a broken neck. There is only one absolutely golden rule to be followed in these cases, viz. only remount when the foot of the hill can be clearly seen. The idea is only too prevalent that no danger exists when half the gradient-or the "dangerous part," so called-has been walked over; but in ninety per cent. of the hills, the really bad portion is to be found towards the valley end of the de- clivity. It is there that only too often the fatal serpentine turn presents itself. Quite recently two North London cycle dealers were charged with alleged wholesale theft of cycles. They were remanded and brought up again for trial. Out of no less than twenty-six bicycles found by the police on the prisoners' premises, nineteen were identified as having been stolen from various people. The judge sentenced the younger of the two to nine months imprisonment and the elder just I double that term—in both cases with hard labour. The decision should have a salutary effect. Cycle stealing is a crime the perform- ance of which is to-day rendered quite easy by the carelessness of the owners of the machines, whom it behoves to be more careful than they are. The Bedfordshire Constabulary have not only a happy way of doing the correct thing but of doing the correct thing properly, at least with regard to mounting the police on cycles. For five years, now, six bicycles have been in daily use amongst members of the force, who on many occasions have found them exceed- ingly useful. But now age has put in an appearance, and it was found that before they could be again classed as serviceable machines extensive repairs would be necessary, and rather than do this the authorities have de- cided to purchase new ones at the fairly re- spectable price of £ 14 14s. each. Many people, especially those holding public positions, are wont to pay about £10 10s. for a cycle, under the mistaken idea that they are striking a bar- gain. A ten guinea bicycle may—perhaps— be good- value for ten guineas, but the pnr- chaser gets more than four guineas' extra value by paying £ 14 14b.
