CYCLING NOTES. -:0:-
CYCLING NOTES. -:0:- The principal N.O.U. ehampionship meeting this year will be helLlIÜ Sriutol. Periodically throughout the snmmsr, the cycling clubs of Brighton will hold amalgama- ted rims. Stringent measures arc being t-slvpn by the South Wales Centre of tho N.C.U. to put a stop to betting at race meetings. The Pntney amateur T. B. Hedges, met with a nasty accident when racing at Bedford in the Easier sports. lie sustained a broken arm and collar bone. Ozie, of the clcling pitilers has been endeavour- in to discover the cost of cycling per mile, and after carefully considering information snp- nlied, has come to the conclusion that one half- penny a mile is all that this enjoyable pastime costs. G. P. Mills is the only British representative u'ho has succeeded in winning the great French road race from Bordeaux to Paris, and although from time to time other representatives have entered they have never equalled his perfor- mance of bringing home the honour. Perhaps this year we may be more fortunate, as Harry Green the well known unpaced rider intends competing. Green has accomplished some very remarkable road performances all his Duniop tyred safety. The difficulty of discovering the whereabouts of a minute puncture can be easily overcome with the aid of a sponge soaked in soapy water. Rub the sponge over the inner tubo and care- fully watch for the bubbles raised by the escaping air. T. J. Gascoyne, the well known Chesterfield professional, promises to show better form than ever this season. Already he lias gained three firsts in the best of company, his recent win at Turin in the International scratch race being a very important one seeing that he beat Jacquelin the "famous French flyer, Ellegard the mysterious Dane who was one of the tirst riders to oeat Major xayior at uernn, Tommaselli, inlomo, rpixio, Jenkins, etc. If Gascoyne continues to show such improved form we may look forward to having a sprint representative capable of holding his own in the best of company on the Continent. Now that our English professionals are driven abroad to earn anything like a decent year's screw at cycle racing, they seem to be getting more accustomed to the modern style of racing, and with such cracks as Jenkins, Gascoyne, Chase, and others representing the old country on the Continent our position in the cycle racing world abroad looks rosy. A county Court action was brought by "Bill" Martin the well known American cyclist, against the Martin Cycle Company of Mel- bourne, for the recovery of JE97. 15s. 3d. being commission on his wins whilst riding a machine bearing the defendant's transfer. Plaintiff claimed that he entered into an agreement with the defendant's company to ride a cycle manu- factured by them, in consideration of which he was to receive 32% per cent. on all first prizes won by him. Up to date Martin had won £ 448, commission on which amounted to £ 145. 15s. 3d. Of this amount J648 had been paid on account leaving the balance sued for. The action however was dismissed on the grounds of no jurisdiction, owing to the majority of the races having been won in Sydney. All those in any way interested in the motor- ing world are anxiously awaiting the result of the Great motor race for the Gordon-Bennett Cup which will be run on May 29th. For the first lime in the annals of the sport this coun- try will be represented, the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland having decided to send representatives to compete. One of our leading motor manufacturing firm is build- ing four cars specially for the race they will be fitted with the Duniop motor tyres, and every other detail will be considered to secure great speed. Competent representatives will be sent as the cars are capable of travelling well over fifty miles an hour, a rate of speed that only experienced motorists could control. Another athlete has been testing his ability as an all-round sportsman by walking a quar- ter of a mile, riding a horse a quarter of a mile, swimming a quarter of a mile, running a quar- ter of a mile, and rowing a quarter of a mile. A similar performance was achieved some months ago by another enthusiastic athlete. On this occasion, T. Savage, of Raynes Park, made a wager to perform all the above items within thirty minutes, succeeding in his object with eleven minutes to spare. His times for each quarter-mile being as follows Walking, 2niin. 45scc.; riding, Iniiii. swimming, 7min. 4tlsec.; running. 2min. 41sec.; cycling, lmin. 17sec.; rowing, 2min. 57 2-5stc. Truly all achievement few could equal. Nearly every cycling club has commenced the active summer season, and from rcn")'i« far received it would appear that is n. decided ii) dub run attendance, many being considerably above tile •tverage. This is indeed a heal thy Rigll and we trust Lill. improvement may continue. bdti with I ;\r¡e gatherings there is always the danger of .()\(;I proprietors failing to cater prolwrly. Many proprietors can satisfactory provide for small pxrties of twelve or eighteen, but if the number increabes all is chaos. It is due to the indifferent manner in which large club mus- ters are attended to, that so many members break away from the main body into small de- tachments of threes or fives.
