Denbigh Ruridecanai Teachers' Union. The winter meeting of the Teachers of the Denbigh lijral Deanery was held at tht- Church Houee, on Tuesday evening, under the pre- sidency of the Rural Dean, the Rector of Ddubigb, when there was a good attendance of teachers from the English and Welsh Sunday riohools, Denbigh, also Caerwys, Nantglyn, Llandyrnog, Llanrhaiadr, Prion, and other parishes iu the rural deanery the hon secret- ary, the Hev E J Davies, Nantglyn, being also present. The annual business and the re-elaction of of the Ruri-Decanal Committee having taken ptacl-, the Rural Detin introduced the Rev J tl Hope, M.A., vicar of Llandegla, who had come over to give a model le80n. He took a class of fourteen or sixteen young girls from Denbigh English School and examined and gave them a lesson on the Church's vear. The children gave most prompt, and. intelligent answer:>, I indicating that toey had been well-grounded, in Churca teaching as regarded the special seasons set apart- by the Church. Hi3 in- struction was most appropriate and excellent, and the mode: lesson was instructive alike to the scholars and teachers, Mr Hope in con- clusion highly complimeuting the children (who had had no special training for the ordeal) ou the excellent way in which they had acquitted themselves. The Rector also, in dismissing the children, congratulated them, and paid, amid applause, a wel:-deserved compn-nenc to Mr Hope for his pleasant and admirable lesson. Mr W M Pierce, headmaster of the National Schools, then red an excellent well thought out paper un The relation of the Sunday School to the Day Sschool." He pleaded for a better organised and more thorough and up- to-date system of teaching in tho Sunday School by which the two systems might b end and the religious and Church teaching started in the day school be earned on and perfected by the Sunday school. He advocated the methods of teaching being made to correspond with the latest or F roebel system of teaching the very little outs and the grading of both scholars and teachers the exercise of strict discipline in the Sunday school, for without discipline ihore could be no real or effective teaching and the aiming at quality and not. quantity as regarded the sciutars/ He in- aiSied upon ttie absolute necessity for a syllabus and also that the teachers should reewve special training for the work, either by classes conducted by the clergy or by other methods oi truining now in vogue. Mr Pierce s paper (which wo regret not hav- ing room for) placed Suuday school teaching on a very high level, adting up a beautiful idem, but one which we are afraid every teacbei present despured ot ever realising. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to the Vicar of Llandegla for the lesson and to Mr Pierce for his able paper.

DENBIGH TOWN COUNCIL. THE MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Denbigh Town Council was held yesterday (Thurs- day), when there were present :—The Mayor (Ald9rman James H lghes), Alder- men Boiz Jones, Robert Owen, Humphrey Jones, Councillors S T Miller, H D Hugh s, F B Clough, J Morris Davies, S Lunt Griffiths, C Cottom, William Parry, D H Davies with the town clerk (Mr J Parry Jones), the deputy town clerk (Mr Edward Parry), the surveyor (Mr John Davies, the sanitary inspector (Mr Lee Jones), and the borough accountant (Mr Ellis Williams). Apologies for absence were received from Councillors A Lloyd Jones and J H Wynne. GOOD NEWS FOR RATEPAYERS. Alderman J Humphrey Jones, in moving an order on the treasurer, referred to the gratifying fact that there now only re- mained a final instalment of X187 to pay off the old drainage loan, which would mean a sum of X357 10s for the year less to be provided for. The Finance Com- mittee did their utmost to keep the rates down, but somehow the Council were con- tinually finding ways to spend the money. However, they hoped in time that several of the loans would fall in and the rates be still further reduced. TOWNSEND PRIVATE ROADS. MARKHT HALL SCHEME. The following report was duly presented At a me. ting of the Whole Council in Committee, held on the 15th day of J annary present, the Mayor (in the chair), Messrs Boaz Jones, Robert Owen, S T Miller, H D Hughes, F B Clough, J Morris Davies, J H Wynne, C Cottooi, William Parry, R T Ellis, A Lloyd Jones, and D H Davies. Apologies for non- attendance were received from Messrs J 'I Humphrey Jones and T Lloyd Jones. The following attended as a deputation on behalf of the owners of the property fronting, adjoining, or abutting the Ilown- sand (private roads, viz Messrs J Holland Roberts, E J Roberts, David Williams, and John Jones (blacksmith). M<r J Holland Roberts, as spokesman of the deputation, pleaded for a modification of the expenditure in making up the roads as they would not be used for heavy traffic, and he was informed by the Mayor, on I behalf of the Counoil, that the Surveyor bad already received instructions to carry out the work under more modified require- ments than were contained in the original specifications, whereupon Mr Holland Roberts expressed general approval of the sctierne subject to such modification. It was agreed "That the Surveyor prepare modified specifications and submit the same to the Highway Committee." The question of the proposed improve- ments on the Market Hall site was con- sidered, and it was resolved 11 That Mr R D Hughes be informed that his warehouse in Crown-lane is required for the purpose of the improvements, and that the Council are prepared to pay him the price he agreed in 1901 to accept, viz., £ 300." That the further consideration of the scheme be deferred until Mr Hughes' reply is re- ceived." A letter was read from the Earl of Meath as to the observance of Empire Day (Alay 21th), pamphlets relating to which had already been distributed amongst the members of the Counoil, but after some diseuusion the matter was dropped. A communication was submitted from the Tottenbam Urban District Council as to the unemployed problem, but no resolu- tion was passed thereon. The Town Clerk reported that he had received notice from the Local Government Board District Auditor of his intention to audit the accounts of the Town Council so far as they relate to the payment to the Joint Committee of the sum of 950 annually for the purposes of higher e-ucation within the borough, and it was resolved That tho Mayor, Messrs J Humphrey Jones, and C Cottom attend the audit as a deputation from the Council to protest against tile audit being held, as it was considered unnecessary and involved an expenditure of sE2 in stamp duty to no purpose." The application made by the Borough Surveyor, the Sanitary Inspector, and the Deputy Town Clerk for remuneration in respect of their attendance at committee meetings held in the evening was sub- mitted, but, after some discussion, no reso- lution was passer" thereon. The Mayoi movod, and Councillor D H Davies seconded, the adoption of the above report. MR. R. D. HUGHES AND THE COUNCIL. Councillor S 1 Miller asked if any reply had been received from Mr R D Hughes in regard to the proposed purchase of his warehouse ? Toe Town Clerk replied in the affirma- tive, and Councillor Miller said he did not wish it read at present. He only wanted to know if a reply had been received so that they could proceed with the matter. He would muve that the letter be dealt with by the whole Council in Committee at the end of the meetig.-Agreed. The Mayor said that with regard to the deputation that waited upon the Auditor in regard to the Technical School accounts, he might say that the Auditor treated them very courteously and expressed himself as being in sympathy with the views of the Council and said he would make a repre- sentation to the authorities. Other local bodias had found a similar difficulty, and he (the auditor) thought that if authorities took joint action in the matter they could get what was a defect in the Act remedied. He (the Mayor) thought the interview very satisfactory and might lead to something being done. Councillor D H Davies asked if there was any information respecting the roads at the bottom of the town. The Surveyor replied that as several of the owners were doing repairs here and there, and he therefore had not been able to make an estimate. Tne Mayor remarked that this matter would come on in the Surveyor's report, and it then dropped. The report was then adopted. HIGHWAY COMMITTEE. ALTERATIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS. It was repotted at a meeting of the Highway Committee, held on the 15th day of January present Mr Boaz Jones (chair- man), the Mayor, Messrs S T Miller, H D ( Hughes, and J Morris Davies. The Inspector submitted his monthly report. It was reported that the laying of the new drain in the Green had been com- pleted, the work having been carried out by men who would otherwise have been unemployed. I It was agreed to accept the terms for the I insurance of the men employed at the Foel Gasjth Quarry, viz., 40 per cent on the wages paid until July next, when the eurrent policy on the other Corporation emplojees expires. N A circular letter was submitted from the Local Government Board as to the desira- bility of affording facilities for the exten- sion of administrative action for the prevention of tuberculosis, but the con- sideration of the matter was deferred pending the receipt of a promised memor- andum from the Board's Medical Officer setting oat the appropriate action that can be taken by Sanitary Authorities. The Committee then inspected the Leopard Inn premises, where Mr Robert Owen was erecting a new front wall, with the view of considering the desirability of asking Mr Owen to set back his frontage so as to commence a proposed widening of Bridge-street, but the committee came to the conclusion that it was not necessary to commence the widening so far up as the Leopard premises. Mr Owen, however, consented to let the downspouts into the front wall and plinth so as not to project over the footway, the expense of so doing to be borne by the Council. It is recom- mended 44 That the causeways from High- gate and Bridge-street be continued to the lamp post at the corner of the Conservative Club, and that steps be constructed to lead from one level to the other." Tho com- mittee also visited Ivy House Dairy, where a new crossing was asked for, but do not consider that one is necessary. It was reported that three objections had been lodged against the proposed regula- tions limiting the speed of motor car traffic on certain highways in the borough, namely, by the Royal Automobile Club, the Auto- mobile Club of North Wales and the Motor Union of Great Britain and Ireland. Several bills relating to the work of the sanitary and highway departments were submitted and initialled by the Chairman. Alderman Boaz Jones moved the adoption of the above report. The Mayor, in seconding, said a wotd of thanks was due to Alderman Robert Owen for the way in which he had met the Committee in allowing the downspouts to be let into the building, thus obviating an obstruction. Their thanks were due to him, and if they had seen him a little earlier no doubt they could have had further advantages. Alderman Boaz Jones heartily endorsed the Mayor's remarks. Councillor Miller called attention to the last paragraph in the report with regard to causeways from Highgate and Bridge- street, and proposed as a rider to the report that a channel be carried down as far as opposite to the Plough. Councillor Cottom seconded. This was carried. Councillor Williara Parry moved that, as regards the causeways from Bridge-street to High-street and the steps suggested, as an amendment, that the matter should be referred back to committee to be recon- sidered, and Councillor Clough seeondedj lie really objected to the whole thing. Alderman Humphrey Jones thought that steps would be most objectionable, and he supported Mr Parry. Councillor Cottom thought it would perhaps be wise to send the matter bi\lck for reconsideration. It was certainly a very dangerous spot and needed attending 1 9 to, but whether the steps would be the best way of altering it lie was in doubt. The Mayor explained that the Highway Committee met on the spot, and came to the conclusion that the steps would be thu best tiling possible, but now there seemed a difference of opinion. Councillor Miller said the real objection to these steps was thit our local gentry would sit there (laughter) otherwise they wwild be a real improvement. Councillor Clough sarcastically re- marked that, as regarded tlnse to whom Mr Miller alluded, they had better put a little verandah there as well for their accommodation (laughter). It was decided to refer the matter back to committee, and the report was then adopted. MR CLOUGH 0.1; THE ROTARY BRUSH. MOTOR TRACTOR. At a meeting of the Highway Committee, held on the 20dl day of January present Mr Bo^z Jones ( hairman), the Mayor, Messrs S T Miller, H D Hughes, J Morris Davies, S Lunt Griffiths, and J H Wynne. The Surveyor submitted a report as to street watering and sower flashing, aud after consideration it is recommended "That the Council purchase a motor tractor with a pump attached, and with interchangeable parts so as to make it available for watering purposes or for haulage." That the Surveyor makn enquiries through local tradesmen as to the terms upon which the purchase money could be spread over a term of years." That the Surveyor be instructed to do what is necessary to the old wells to obtain the water for street watering and flushing purposes, and, if necessary, to re-open the old well in the Corporation storeyard." An application was made as to the extension of the footpath in front of Mr Lloyd Jones' buildings in Portland-plact-, and it is recommended "That the resolu- tion passed in March, 1903, be adhered to, viz., that the present footpath be extended towards Factory-place as far as the down- spout near the front door of the new house, provided Mr Lloyd Jones takes in the wal! above the tannery yard door for a length of 5 feet. It was reported that the contract with the County Council for the maintenance of the main roads within the borough would expire on the 31st of March next. it in recommended That the Town Council offer to renew the contract for a turther term of three years upon the same terms, viz., £ 550. Tenders were submitted for the refilling of the rotary brush and for new suction hose for the water cart, it was resolved "That Messrs Mellard and Co's tender for the iformer at X2 ] 7s Gel be accepted, on condition that the same includes carriage, and also their tender at 3" 8i per foot for 21ft length of hose. Alderman Boaz Jones moved the adoption of the report, and Councillor Miller seconded. Councillor Parry said he should like to have the full information in regard to the motor traction as they were now voting in the dark as they did not know how the cost was going to work out. The Mayor said they had anticipated this question and the whole facts would be laid before the Council if it was referred to committee, which would be advisable in the interest of the rate- payers. The Mayor's suggestion was agreed to. Councillor Clough called attention to an item for new brushes for the rotary brush and con- tended that it was very rarely used not halt often enough and was more or less a White Elephant." The streets, he considered, had been in a disgraceful state for some time and visitors to the town complained to him that it it was the dirtiest place that they had ever visitod (" Oh, oh "). Alderman Boaz Jones strongly objected to this remark, Councillor Clough: I say it is and the brush is never used as it ought to be. The Mayor explained that the rotary brush could not be used on all occasions, for instance after a thaw it would be ruinous to the ro,ds Whenever it could be used with advantage it was brought into action. Councillor Clough said he was sorry to contra- dict the Mayor, but he believed it was not used as often as it should be. He asked the Surveyor when it was used The Surveyor said the brush had been used about 40 times since May, about twice a week. Councillor Clough said he must contradict that it was very rarely used, and he went on to state that the rotary brush was used every day in big towns. The Surveyor went on to state that the roads were made of sets on wood blocks in the large towns, which made all the difference. Councillor Clough And on ordinary maca- dam. The Mayor: Will you let the Surveyor finish speaking ? ouncilIor Clough I will not. The Mayor (emphatically) But I say you must. The Surveyor then went on to explain that the brush was used whenever possible Councillor Miller said the brush was most effective, and would do good work if it was put to the best advantage and used properly. The Surveyor could not always be present to see the brush did the correct thing; he did not blame the Surveyor. Councillor Clough moved that the question of buying new brushes be referred back to com- mittee. Councillor Lunt Griffiths seconded. After a lengthy discussion the report was adopted. FINANCE, &C., COMMITTEE. COUNTY RATE BASIS. At a meeting of the Finance, &o., Com- mittee, held on the 20th January; present, Mr J Humphrey Jones (chairman), Messrs Robert Owen, C Cottom, and D H Davies. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Messrs T Lloyd Jonl and W Parry. Instructions were asked as to the tenancies of the auction stands in the Smithfield after 1st March next when the current tenancies expire, also as to the oontinuance of the additional fairs after April next, and it is recommended that both matters be con- sidered by the whole Council in Committee with power to act, after the conclusion of the business at the next Council meeting. The Borough Accountant submitted his petty cash account for the past month, and it was resolved that the cheque for the ensuing month be for £ 120. A oopy of the proposed basis or standard for county rates prepared by the County Assessment Committee was submitted, the figures for the borough being as follows Denbigh parish, proposed basis, CIS,863, present basis, £ 18,715; Henllan parish, 4:10,652, £ 10,059; Llanrhaiadr (Urban) parish, 23,491, S:3,463 total, £ 33,006, £:32837. The Borough Accountant's application for an increase of salary was considered, and it is recommended that his salary be increased from X40 to X50 per annum as from the 1st instant. It was resolved that the monthly meeting of this Committee be held on the third Thursday in each month at 10 30 a.m. Bills, 55 in number and amonting to XS18, were passed for payment. A discussion arose over the recommendation for the increase of salary of the Borough Accountant, and Councillor Clough strongly opposed it on the ground that they had refused other officials of the Council, and they should deal with them all in the same manner, and besides, it was under- stood that he was to bep a new set of books and I keep the accounts in a different form. He moved ,d that it be deferred until July next. Alderman Robert Owen said the question of the new form of books had been considered, hut it was said that all corporate accounts may soon c, me under the audit oi the Local Government Roar J, and it was better, therefore, to defer the alteration of books. Councillor Clough objected to it being rushed, as there were only four members present at the committee meeting, he was net able to attend. Councillor Cottom said it hal not been rushed the appli ;atioa had been made at the December committee and had been deferred six weeks for consideration. They had fully con- sidered the alteration in the books, and agreed that if the alteration in audit, referred to by A'dermau Owen, was likely to come in soon, they had better wait, so as not to make a change now which might have to be changed again, but they dealt with the salary apart altogether from the question of the method of keeping the books, as the committee considered that the Borough Accountant had served the Council for the past 14 years, as their accountant, for a salary of £ 10, which they thought was quite inadequate for tne work done. Councillor D H Davies supported the increase of salary; as did also the Chairman of the Committee—Alderman Humphrey Jones. The report was then adopted. INATTENTIVE AND NEGLIGENT FIREMEN. At a meeting of the Fire Brigade Joint Committee, held on the 20th day of .January, present, Mr J Humphrey Jones (Chairmau), Messrs Robert Owen, C Cottom, and D H Davies representing the Town Council Messrs J Morris Davies, L W Sayle, J P Joyce, W Hughes, and J G Lloyd repre- senting the Fire Brigade. Apologies for non-attendance were recieved from Messrs T Lloyd Jones, W Parry, and Roger Pryce. The Secretary of the Brigade read the annual report of the brigade and the list of attendances at drills. It was resolved that three members of the brigade who had only attended two or three drills out of a possible I 12 be written to as ¡'o their irregular attendance. That two members who had not brought in their uniform, &c., for inspection be ordered to have same at the Fire Station for that purpose by 8 p.m. on Monday, February 1st. It is recommended that the brigade be provided with a Climax Fire Extinguisher at a cost of £2 5s 0 1. The report was adopted on the motion of Alderman Humphrey Jones. FEW MILD CASES Ob1 SCARLET FEVEK. TOWN GENERALLY THOROUGHLY I HEALTHY. I The whole Council in Committee reported that the Medical Officer reported that there were cases of scarlet fever of a, mild nature in the I town, confined to six houses, and he recom- mended the closing of the elementary schools for a further week with a view of preventing the spreading of the disease. It was resolved that the schools be closed. The Medical Officer also reported that there have been no cases of diphtheria or any other infectious disease in the borough for many months. The Mayor, in moving the adoption of the report, said he was glad that the matter had been brought before the Council, because directly when there was an outbreak of an infectious character the matter was always extremely magnified by alarmists, who went about making things out to be worse than really was the case, tie had hoard it said there were cases of diphtheria, which was quite untrue, and he was glad to hear from the Medical Officer that there had been no case of diphtheria for very many months, and that the cases of scarlet fever they now had were of a very mild character. Alderman Boaz Jones seconded the adoption of the report, which was carried. SMITHFIELD. ,The Borough Accountant reported that the Smithfield receipts for the month were J64 83 Id, which showed an increase of 3s 4d on the corres- ponding period last year. THE STREETS ON SUNDAY MORNING IN A DISGRACE FUL STATE. Councillor John Morris Davies callel attention to the fact that from the turn, to Bostoffice-lane :ind the Station the s reets were in a disgraceful itate on Sunday mornings, being lettered with newspaper wrappers, pesters, etc., by the boys 'who met the late trains for the papers. The Mayor said he believed the newspaper boys got papers on their own account, and that it was not the feult of the local newsagents. He did not know whether they could proceed against some of them ouncillor lough suggested that a wire basket be fixed to the lamp post near the station for the waste paper to be placed in. The Mayor thought it would be a good idea if one of the roadmen were put to watch the boys, warn them, and, if necessary, after that to summons them. Alderman Robert Owen considered it a dis- grace to the town that these newsboys should be allowed to make such a noise on the streets late on Saturday nights, just on the eve of Sunday. He was surprised that the parents allowed them to go out so late to do it. They were a perfect nuisance. All the shops were closed in proper time, and he thought the attention of the police should be called to this matter. The Mayor I don't think we have any byelaw to deal with this. Alderman Robert Owen: We can have them up for a nuisanoe if it is not a nuisance I don't know what it. Councillor Miller said it was understood that one of the roadmen would go round on the Sunday morning and clear away paper and rubbish of that kind. The Surveyor said he did in the main part of the town but not so far down as that. It was eventually decided on the suggestion of the Mayor to write to the Superintendent of the Police on the matter, and in the meantime the Surveyor was instructed to put one of the road- men on to look after the removal of the rubbish thus left on Saturday nights. BETTER POSTAL FACILITIES. A letter was read from the Town Clerk of Ruthin as to a proposed joint action by the Town Councils ot Denbigh and Ruthin with a view of securing the conveyance of the mails by rail motor van instead of road The Mayor pointed out that there was the difficulty of the Sunday Clause as regarded the Vale of Clwyd line which would prevent the mails being run on a Sunday. Alderman Boaz .Jones was opposed to any alteration that would lead to a Sunday train and that they were quite satisfied with the present arrangements. Councillor Miller proposed that they join the Ruthin Council in this movement which need not necessarily lead to Sunday train, and remarked that if they could do without letters in London on a Sunday surely they could do so in a place like Denbigh. Councillor J Morris Davies seconded. Alderman Humphrey Jones said it certainly seemed very primitive that they should have the mails by road when there was a rail running through the place. The Mayor pointed out that the question whether the mail was run on Sunday or not could be settled hereafter, and he thought they would do well to join the Ruthin Council in this nroiect. nroiect. It was unanimously agreed to do so. A CHILDREN'S PLAYGROUND. A letter was read from the County Territorial Force Association thanking the Council for granting the use of the Horse Market to the Army Service Corps Company for drill pur- poses. In regard to this, Councillor Parry suggested that this place ght be used as a public play- ground for children at certain hours. This matter was referred to the Sdlithfield Committee. NEW BRIDGE. A letter was received from Mr Pugh, Cae- gwynion, asking when the Council were going to fix a bridge between Penybanc and aegwynion. His offer of doing the cartage still held good. It was deferred until the Surveyor had seen Mr Wickham as to the cost of the proposed bridge. SHEEP DIPPING. A letter was received from the Glasfryn F D. Council suggesting that there be only one sheep dipping order a year, as the present law seriously affected the farmers. Alderman Robert Owen proposed, and Coun- cillor S Lunt Griffiths seconded, that a reso- lution similar to the one enclosed by the above Council be adopted. MOTORS. A letter from the Clerk to the County Council forwarding three objections received to the proposed regulations limiting the speed of motor traffic in the borough was received. It was agreed to wait and see the result of such action. FIRE BRIGADE RESIGNATION. The resignation of Mr W G Helsby (under age limit) as Lieutenant of the Fire Brigade, was received it being understood that he did not resign the secretaryship. The matter was referred to the Council Brigade Committee.

Denbigh Military Ball. A GREAT SUCCESS. Yesterday evening (Thursday) the annual Military Ball in connection with the "B" Squadron Denbighshire (Hussars) Yeomanry, the D Company, 4th Batt R.W.F., and the Denbigh Company Army Service Corps, was held at the County Hall, Denbigh. The room presented a charming appearance, having been most artistically decorated by Mr C M Hum- phreys. Mateflals for decorative purposes were kindly lent by the Infirmary, Mr R Lloyd Jones (Densons), Messrs Andrews & Co, the May-Day Committee and others. Mr Peter Williams (plumber) also kindly lent, and set up, the gas fittings. The attractiveness of the decorations was greatly enhanced by a magnifi. cent display of silver cups, which included the Challenge Cup, 1891; Morris' Tube, 1907-8; Kecruits, 1904-7 Regimental Challenge Cup, Salusbury Cup; Marksman's Cup. 1907-8; Private T A Davies' Cup; Wooden Spoon, for poorest shot, 1907-8; D.H.Y. Cup for best shot in the Regiment; R.S.M Bruton's Cup for best shot in the Regiment, 1894 and 1900-1 The "Lome" Cup; R W.F., D" Company's Bugle ex-Sergt Edgar's Watch and Cup for sword exercise, 1878 and 1879; Sergt-major Oldfield's Cup for best shot in Regiment, and tw,) trumpets. The programme of dances had been well arranged, and the success of the ball was due to the untiring efforts of the secretaries, Sergt- Inst Pays, R.W F., and Hergt-Major Aries, D.H.Y., who have been ably assisted by a com- mittee composed of the following :—R.S.S. Major Bruton, Sergt Lloyd, Trooper W Lewis, Colr-Sergt T Roberts. Corpl J H Emmanuel, and Bandsman George Wainwright. The proceeds of the ball will be given in aid of the Denbigh District Nursing Institution and the Denbigh May Day Funds. Delaney's string band was in attendance and rendered some very popular dance music. Mrs Davies, of the Royal Oak Temperance Hotel, catered in excellent style, and to the satisfaction of all concerned. Wines and spirits were supplied by Mr Lloyd, Bull Hotel. The M.Cs who admirably discharged their duties, were R.S.S. Major Brutcn, D.H.Y., Sergt W Lloyd, D.H.Y., and Colr-Sergt T Roberts, R.W.F. The ladies' cloakroom was in charge of Mrs R Dew, and the gentlemen's cloakroom was in charge of Trooper J Roberts and Corpl C Boycott. This year the lady patroness was Mrs E W Griffith, Plas Newydd but unfortunately, at the last, she was quite unable to attend and telegraphed her apology and explanations of absence to the Mayor. By the following post the Lady Patroness sent the following letter to the Mayor from Grantham :— Dear Sir,—I regret very much that I am unable to come down to Denbigh to the ball to-morrow. My little not well, and as it is a seven hours journey, each way, from here to Denbigh, I do not like to leave her for the next few days. County Magistrates' Court, WEDNESDAY.—Before Mr J D W Griffith (presiding) and Mr Bennett Jones. "PLAYING WITH" A GUN! Samuel Jones, a youth employed at Sceibion Fawr Farm, Llanrhaiadr, was summoned for having carried a gun without a licence on the 18th of September. Mr Drake, of the Inland Revenue Department, conducted the prosecution, and called P.C. Pierce, of Llanrhaiadr, who gave evidence to the effect that OD the day in question he saw the defendant carrying >. gun and another youth beating bushes. He held it in a position ready for shooting, and when asked for his licence he said he thought he did not require one. Mr P M Ellis, the Inland Revenue cflicer stationed at Denbigh, said that the defendant had no licence for the gun and had not taken one out since the date in question. Mr A 0 Evans appeared for the defence, and called the defendant, who said he was a servant man in the= mploy of Mr Ed win Jones. On the morning in question he went out with his master, and whilst the latter was getting the sheep out of the corn he and Mr Jones' son went to play with the gun. He denied that they were beating the bushes, and they could not shoot because there was only an empty cartridge in the gun. He was simply holding the gun for his master, and not carrying it. Edwin .Jones said that the previous day he had scared the crows with the gun and ho left the empty cartridge in the gun. Ho took the gun on the day in question to fiighten the crows, and had given it to the defendant to hold whilst he went tc gatber t) e sheep together. The Chairman said that the B9nch con. sidered the case proved, and the defendant was fined 2s 6J and costs. >- THE RETIREMENT OF SUPT JONES. The Chairman referred to the retiremen- uf Supt Jones, and remarked that this was his last appearance in court, and there was no doubt that they would miss him very mnch. In his capacity as Superin endenc of the Police he had saved the magistrates and others very much labour in the admir- able way in which be had put the different cases before them. They wished him every success and happiness in the rest that he had so well earned (applause). Mr A 0 Evans expressed his sincere regret that he should not have the oppor- tunity again to meet such an honouiab'e opponent. He bad always found that wbac Supt Jones said was extremely reliable. He never overstated a case, never shrank from his duties, and there was hardly any need of cross-examining him because he always adhered ve"t rigidly to the truth. He was sure there was no better man in the service of the county, not only in the police service, but also in the public service. He had always given entiie ati8- faction to all parties concerned, and be was most highly esteemed by the whole ui the police force. The Magistrates' Clerk (Mr J Parrs- Jones) heartily endorsed the sentiments expressed by the previous speakers, and said Supt Jones and he had worked a great deal together and were often brought into contact, and he had always found that he carried out his duties most conscientiously. He never unnecessarily pressed a case, and it gave him him great pleasure to join very heartily in wishing the Superintendent long life and happiness in his retirement. Supt Jones returned thanks for the kind remarks passed, in a few appropriate remarks.

To-day's Borough Police Court. The usual Police Court was held to-day (Friday), before the Mayor (Alderman Jamt Hughes) presiding, Dr Lloyd, Messrs Harrison Jones, Robert Owen, C Cottom, and William Parry. The court was packed, and the atmosphere was even worse than the proverbial "hole of Calcutta," and the complaints as to the inade- quacy of the accommodation of the court were very bitter. The case reported under Denbigh news of tw,) men who stole an overcoat from Mr Thomas' clothiery establishment was dealt with, and the defendants sentenced to one month's imprison- ment each. The case which led to the court being so crowded was that of a gamekeeper named John Hughes, in the employ of Mr Jones of Llannereh, who was charged with unlawfully wounding. It was explained that this was a sequel to the charge of night poaching which was brought against Isaac Roberts, Robert Jones, and Thos Roberts on December 12th, which was dismissed. (Proceeding).

The Rev Silas Evans, Gyffylliog, gave an inter- esting and instructive address. On the motion of the Rev W P Whittington, seconded by the Rev D Howell Griffiths, a vote of thanks was accorded the speaker and the chairman.

Novel Entertainment. Yesterday evening (Thursday), at tbe- English Presbyterian Church a 44 search party was held, which proved to be Loth novel and enjoyable. The Rev R Earnest Jones, the paster, presided, and explained the nature of the hunt. CHUKCH DEFENCE On Friday even- ing the Rev J Silas Evans, B.A., GyiTylliog, Ruthin, delivered a most instructive address in Welsh and partly in English on Church history and Church defence in the Schoolroom. There was a most encouraging audience, and the Rev J H Hope, rector, presided. WEDDING.—A pretty and interesting welding was solemnised in St Tegla's LI urch, on Wed- nesday afternoon, the contracting pa, i ies being, Miss Ellen Lloyd Edwaids, eldest dauuhitT of Mr Evan Edwards, Travellers Rest. Llandegla, and Mr William Ellis Morris, youngest son of L Mrs Ann Morris, Pentre Isaf, Llandegla. The ceremony was conduted by the Rev J H Hope, M.A rector. The bridesmaid was Miss M J Morris, Llantysilio, niece of the bridegroom, and Mr Robert Pierce, Vron, Llandegla, nephew of the bridegroom, acted as best man, and the bride was given away by her father. The weather proved most auspicious, the sun shining gloriously. After the ceremony the guests were entertained at the Hand Inn, of which the newly married couple are the new tenants. The health of the bride and bridegroom was proposed by the Rev J H Hope, who spoke in felicitious terms of the exemplary characters borne by the bride and bridegroom, and Mr H Williams, schoolmaster, also bore testimony to their usefulness for many years past as members of the Church choir. .SKATING. During the early part of the week Jack Prost has reigned supreme, and for the first time this winter some skating has been en- joyed in this neighbourhood. Later, he has deposed, a thaw having set in on Thursday. B.S.P.C.C. The Denbigh and North East Branch of the N.S.P.O.C. has during the quarter ended 31st December, 1908, inquired into 29 complaints of neglect, ill-treatment and other wrongs of childhood, of which 29 were found to be true, affecting 92 children and 41 offenders. Action was taken as follows 28 cases were warned, one was prosecuted, convicted one, who was sentenced to ;one month imprisonment. The Society's Inspector made 195 visits of supervision HOCKEY MATCH. An interesting hockey match is promised at Denbigh Hockey Ground, to-day (Saturday), when the local team will encounter Llandudno, which has a particularly strong team. F Connah, and R P Hughes forwards, J T Jones, A G Davies, G Parry Jones (capt), D H Hughes, and D B Searell. DEATH OF MISS PRITCHARD. It is with sincere regret that we record the death, at the early age of 27 years, of Miss Margaret Ann (Maggie) Pritchard, daughter of Mr John Pritchard, 12, Tower-terrace, Den- bigh, on Saturday last. Deceased had suffered a long and painful illness, which developed into consumption. It is only about three years since the deceased buried her mother. She leaves a father, two brothers, and I everal other relatives to mourn her loss. The funeral took place at Whitchurch yesterday (Thursday), and was largely attended, the Rev James Charles officiating. TRAP ACCIDENT. About noon on Saturday, as Dr Lincoln Roberts was driving on the road leading to Segrwyd, his horse took fright, by the stile above Cae Dai, at a drove of pigs, and bolted in the direction of Oolhyfryd. Both the doctor and the groom were thrown out, and the horse, after breaking the traces, galloped through the 'back entrance to Dolhyfryd, where it was caught uninjured. Both the occupants of the trap also escaped practically unhurt, and the doctor has since been doing his usual profes- sional work. SATURDAY NflJRT CONCERT. A very successful concert was given at the Mission Room, Henllan-street, on Saturday, when the Rev T J Davies, presided. A capital programme fhad bean arranged by Messrs Dd Hartley and R Royles, and the following took part:—Mr and Miss Downing, Miss Biodwen Jones, Mr Richard G Williams, Mr W Hugh Jones, Miss Price, Miss Dilys Hughes, Mr Francis Jones, Mr D Davies, Mr Joseph Wynne, Miss Myfanwy Jones :and Mr Edw ri Eben Jones. A vote thanks was accorded the per- formers on the motion of Chairman, and a similiar compliment was accorded the Chair- man on the motion of Mr Cowell Daoieltf. Another concert commencing at 8 o'clock will be given to-night (Saturday), when the chair will be taken by Mr John Davies (Brynyparo). LIBERAL CLUB SMOKING CONCERT. One of the most euacessful smoking concerts took place at the Denbigh Liberal Club on Friday last. There being a very large attend- ance of members and friends. Councillor Sam T Miller was an ideal chairman, and the conveners were Messrs W Oliver Davies and Webbe Davies. Messrs Salusbury and Benson Evans accompanied on the piano, An ex- cellent programme had been arranged by the convenors, consisting of songs, recitations, duets, double quartette, &c. All the items' were rendered with great skill, the audience on severe occasions calling for an encore. The following artistes took part:—Messrs D Davies, Edward Jones, T Edward Jones, Harold Jones, W Lloyd Williams, A Jackson, Evan Evans, and others. A most novel and interesting reading competition took place, iive entries. The adjudicator, Mr E J Rowlands, County School, without any hesita- t)on, giving the tirst prize to Mr T Pandy Williams, "Banner" Office. The Chairman C ailed upon the winner to come forward, "From the due? deep sea," was handed to him, amid much laughter. Mr T B Joues, on the call of the Chairman, expressed his pleasure b t being present, aud made some useful and instructive remarks .particularly in regard to penillion sing- ■i^g, and hoped this pai.t of the att of singing would have more attention in the future. On the proposal of Mr E J Rowlands, seconded by Mr George Jones .(Bee Hive), a most hearty vote of thanks was given to the Chairman, artistes, accompanists and conveners, the Chairman responding. Mr Lloyd Williams closed the concert by singing the Walsh National Anthem, the audience standing and heartily joining in the chorus. This con- cluding one of the best smoking concerts held at the Club. PRIMROSE LEAGUE ENTERTAINMENT. On Friday evening the Assembly Hoom of the Denbigh Constitutional Club was packed to its utmost capacity and many unable to get in, when an excellent musical programme was entirely sustained by the Denbigh Amateur Minstrel Troupe. Mr Hugh Williams presided, supported by Mr Cottom and Mr E J Swayne. theo troupe consisted of the following: -inlessrs Francis Jones, John JCchard Jones, Edward Reber Jones, Miss Gwennie Hamer, J iiso Mary Louis aJone. Finale chorus, Shine Bright Moon," The Troupe. -The entertainers gave an ertremely clever performance and were loudly applauded for each and every item, and in conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Chairman and performers on the motion of Mr C Cottom, who said that they had all done so remarkably well that he need not make particular mention of any name with the exception of the two young ladies who were in the troupe, and who deserved to be compli- mented on their excellent singing, which was seconded by Col Swayne. Mr Hugh Williams responded, and one of the minstrels, Mr David Henry Davies made a capital, wall delivered little apeech on beha!f of the troupe.
