SUCCLSSV.S IN Music.—At the Christmas examination of Trinity College, London, Miss G Hughes, Caorwys, passed the intermediate, and Misb Harriet Black, Liverpool, passed the preliminary examination, gaining a high per- centage of marks. Koth candidates were prepared by Miss Charlotte Jones, L R.A. M. Miss Jones, pupils have been most successful at the Royal Academy and other examinations, gaining medal, honour certificates, and prize certificates. WESLEY GUILD.-The Rev M E Jones pre- sided over the weekly meeting last Monday, the topic for discussion being the history of the past year, dealt with from a scriptural point of view by Mr W Marsden Davies, and from a literary standpoint by Mr D H Davies. The Chairman, Mr Evan Hughes, and Mr W Sturgess Jones took part in the discussion following the reading of the papers. There was a good attendance, and a very pleasant evening was spent. MUSICAL SUCCESS.— Miss Evadne Foulkes should be gratified over the result of the recent Trinity College of Music examinatiaas. Five of her pupils entered for the test, and were all successful. Intermediate division: Maggie Foulkes and Maggie B Pritchard junior division: Gwendoline W Story; preparatory grade Gwen S Lewis and Dilys Mary Gee. It is a matter of public knowledge that the last named laboured under very trying circum- stances. We congratulate the young musicians, one and all; and Miss Foulkes in particular. CHRISTMAS AT THE ASYLUM.—Christmas Day was rendered bright and pleasant for the many hundreds of patients in the Asylum. An excellent dinner of roast beef, plum pudding, &c., &c., was provided, and followed later in the da.y by an equally good tea. In the morn- ing a bright and appropriate Christmas service was held in Church, enjoyed by a large cumber of the patients. In the evening the usual dance, interspersed with songs, took placo, when Miss May Roberts (the younger daughter of Mr Thomas Roberts, Denbigh) sang most beautifully, the talented young vocalist giving great delight #o the audience, and being loudly encored. Miss Balshaw also gave an excellent and pleasing rendering of her songs, and was warmly greeted. Tbe ] accompaniments were perfectly played by Miss < Roberts. DEATH OF THE MAYOR'S BROTHER-IN-LAW.— We regret to learn that Mr Owen, the brother- in-law of the Mayor of Denbigh (Dr David Lloyd), has died this week, atter a very brief illness, leaving a widow n-nd four young children to mourn his loss. The funeral takes plfice to-day. Mrs Owen was well-known a few years ago to a large circle in Denbigh, and tha greatest sympathy is felt for her in the terrible bereavement --lie has experienced. Iu con- sequence of the above event the Mayor has been prevented attending several public functions this week. "AN EYE TO COMFORT."—Denbigh Town Councillors evidently have a keen eye to their own comfort, judging from the criuifeon coloured curtains which gracefully hong over the doors, which at once improve the appearance of the Council Chamber, and keeps out- the deadly draughts. An umbrella stand has also been procured which has been most serviceable duriug the raillY season," which now apjrears to have passed us by iu favour of the grip of frost," someone suggests ih-L foot-warmers should be provided for the Councillors to cope with this phase of the weather. CYCLING ACCIDENT: A PKDKSTRIAN RUN DOWN. Mr W G Helshy, photographei, "f this town, met with a serious accident Oil Christ- mas Day. He had been to St Asnph on business and was returning iu the evening, when, in the neighbourhood of Trefnant. he was ovortaken by a cyclist, who rang his tell. Mr Hehby turned round and saw the lamp, but the cyclist was into him before he had time to get out o' the way, and knocked him over. Apparently the cyc-ist afterwards went on his way without rendering any ns-iskance, for it was fully an hour la1.cr before Mr Helsby, who was stunned by his fall, was found by some casual passers-by. The Occident may have been to a certain extent unavoidable, but the subsequent conduct of the cyclist was most reprehensible. CHRISTMAS SERVICES.—Christmas Diy broke rice and dry and the weather was beui.iful in aud around Denbigh. At. 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Ifoly Communion WAS celebrated in Er.gliah and Welsh at St David sand S5 Mary's Churches, whilst Morning Service wrs held in St Mary's at 10.30 a.m. The service was of a 1 joyous character, and the sacred edifice had been most beautifully decorated bv the follow- ing ladies: --Pulpit, Mrs Tumour aud Miss Lea altar, Miss J C Lloyd Williams and Miss Wilson; lectern, Misses Clough; gasoliers, Miss Lewis; font, Mrs Davies, the Rectory, and Miss Amy Wynne. During the ser- vice a very pretty anthem WHR effectively sung by the choir (Mr Charles Newman creditably singing the srlo) under the conductoiship of Mr Also B2:1my, who ably presided at the organ. Evunsopg was also sung at St Mary's in Welsh, after which some carol singing (under the lealership of Mr W M Pierce, the organist; was enjoyed by the large congregation. ESCAPE; OF GAS.-The motor traetion engine, however useful it may be for carrying heavy loads, has lately proved very destructive to the gas and water pipes, which ware laid on the formation of the companies forty years or more ago, when the possibility of such heavy traffic was not contemplated. Consequently at the beginning of this week it was found necessary to repair the gas pipes at the bot'om of Love-lane, and on Tuesday evening, while the work was iu progress, all the lights in Love-lane very nearly went out, the supply of gas having suddenly failed, and it was some minutes before a passable light was again obtaiined. It appears that a leak in one of the pipes had been stopped temporarily, but some mischievous boy took out the stopping and lit a match, the supply of gas up LovtJ Lane being of course temporarily cut off in consequence. Love-lane, however is by no means the only street that has suffered from the failure of the pipes to withstand trtffio for which they were never built.

— THE SALVATION ARMY. The annual tea and miscellaneous enter- tainment in connection with the Denbigh Salvatiop Army was held on Christmas Day. About 4.30 in the afternoon a good number gathered at Bodawen, which had been kindly lent for the occasion by Miss Gee. The tables had been well stocked witb all kinds of delicacies. The members of the army, together with friends, waited at the tables. In the evening a miscel- laneous programme was gone thrcugh, tl e chair being occupied by Mr T C Jones, who also delivered a very appropriate speech, and dwelt upon the good work which the army in Denbigh had made. The meeting was opened with the singing of 44 Gwaed y Groes," under the leadership of Mr Wm Lloyd, and Capt Jones offered prayer. The programme was as follows :—Auto- harp solo, Miss Catherine A Thomas recitation, Miss Edith Lloyd; party. Misses Williams; recitations by Mr J Morris Joues aud Miss Annie Jones; address by the Rev D E Jenkins; recita- tion, (Master Herbert Bellis; song, Miss Tregoning recitation, Miss Emily Batten song, Mr T C Jones (encored); recitation, Miss Catherine Anne Thomas; song.
