The Exchequer returns from April 1 to August 23 show that the receipts were £ 63,316,828, compared with £61,782,960 in the corresponding period of last year. The expenditure was £ 68,843,603, against £ 64,258,660. The skins of two 18 months old boy babies are gradually undergoing a change from white to black at the Philadelphia Children's Homoepathic Hospital, as the result of a rare disease, called p&eudo-lukemia. The children are twins, Tony and Powell Amato, sons of an Italian couple who have seven other children, all normal. The change in the skin was noticed at the beginning of August, and at present, from the head to below the chest, the skin is a light chocolate colour. The rest of the skin is perfectly white. It is expected that within a short time the twins will be wholly black, resembling negroes. FLOWERS THAT BLOOM IN SPRING.- Flowering bulbs have many charms apart from the exceeding beauty of their Mossoms; and one of the principal of these is that they produce their flowers in the spring, when bloom is doubly valued on account of its scarcity. Then, too, the flowering of bulbs is such a simple matter. Each, as it leaves the hands, of the skilled grower, contains within itself the food required for the production of perfect flowers, and so does not require any gardening skill to develop it. In reality, bulbous flowers are easier to manage than any others: and they are, in addi- tion, more showy. Readers who wish to make their selection of bulbs under the most profitable and favourable conditions, should write to-day for Too- good's beautiful book of bulbs that blossom, a large and handsome guide to all the bulbs worth growing. The book will be sent freely to every applicant .interested in gardening, and no obligation of any kind is incurred in writing for a free copy to Too- good and Sons, the King's seedsmen, Southampton. It may be mentioned that this old established house guarantees .its bulbs to grow and please customers, and replaces such as fail to do so, in accordance with the terms printed in the bulb book previously men- tioned.
