VOTE FOR MERVYN PEEL. Do miners realise what has happened to their wages under Unionist and Radical Governments in the federated area? Take as the basis their wages in lSSa. Unionists were in power from that date till 1892, and there were advances in miners' wages amounting to 40 per cent, and no reductions. Then the Radicals were in power from 1892 to 1895, and miners received a reduction of 10 per cent. in their wages and no advances. Next the Unionists were in power from 1895 to 1905, and miners received advances amounting to 30 per cent. in their wages, and reductions amounting to 20 per cent.—a net advance of 10 per cent. Then the Radicals were in power from 1906 to 1909, and miners %-I received advances in their wages amounting to 20 per cent. and reductions amounting to 10 per cent.—a net advance of 10. per cent. So we see 70 per cent. Advance and 20 per cent. Beductioa under Unionist Government. 20 per cent. Advance and 20 per cent. Reduction under Radical Government. The Radicals, raking up every reason they can think of to prevent the Will of the people from prevailing, allege as an objection to the Unionist proposal of a Referendum o'f- that it would cost as much as a General Election.. What is 1. Australia's experience ? In the Times of November 30, 1910, a correspondent writes On April 13, two questions were submitted by Refer- endum to the people of the Australian Commonwealth one as to the financial agr ement between the State and Federal authorities, t e other as to the transfer of State debts to the Commonwealth. The General Election was held on the same day. The amount appropriated for the expenses o the Referendum was £ 6,576. The vote for the General Election was R41,779, in addition to P,33,557 for administration of the Electoral Act." A A. A A A A A A A A A A A A & A AL A -A A A..A.&. A. &&. A. Dear Sir, Since I wrote and pub- lished my Election Address, Mr. Balfour has accepted Mr. Asquith's challenge to submit Tariff Reform to the people by a Referendum if the Union- ist Party are returned to power. The effect of this is that Tariff Reform. is no longer a prominent question in the present contest, be- cause the electors are to have an opportunity of giving their decision upon it later on. The great issue is now there- fore narrowed down to this. namelyAre we going to wreck the COD- stitution and adopt single chamber gov- ernment at the bidd- ing of a faction subR sidised by foreign gold in order to open wide the door for every kind of fancy legisla- tion, including, as a beginning, the dis- memberment of the Ak AL AOL AOL AML AIL Alk AL Alk ARL Alk Alk AIL ARL AIL 1 .1, t.) {." :r' OJ I f (Ínar «- Kingdom with its in- evitable consequence of civil war ? This is the paramount question which the electors are for the moment asked to decide, and I shall feel deeply grateful if you will give this letter the fullest publicity in your paper. I am, dear Sir, Faithfully yours, R IL 0 o-t-k sm as ims NIERVYN PEEL. Danyrallt, Llangadock. Dec. 5, 1910. TO THE hXELTOIcS Oi EAST CARMARTHEN. DANYRALLT, LLANGADOCK. DECEMBER 2ND, 1910. LF It E-N, Another General Election is upon us, in mid-winter, the second within eleven months. and I big to offer myself again as a Candidate for your support. My views expressed in my las* Election Address and on the platform iire well-known to vou. Thev include:- • (1) THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE SECOND CHAMBER of our constitution en lines that will merit the confidence of all parties in the State. (2) THE MAINTENANCE OF THE UNION BETWEEN GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND. The Irish Nationalist Party are now the masters f the Government, and the price of their support is not Reform but the Destruction of our Second Chamber, in order that they may force through Parliament Rulo and any legislation they may choose to dictate. (3) THE MAINTENANCE OF A NAVY strong enough to keep the command of :he sea against all-comers, for the protection of our food supplies ••:id cf our rights all over the world. (4) BRINGING THE PEOPLE RACK TO THE LAND as owners of S-nai! Holdings, rather than as tenants under Public Bodies, and an extension <-f tin's pvinciple. a« -far as possible, to Leaseholders in Urban Districts. \5) HIE REFORM OF OCR TARIFF SYSTEM:— (a) To give stability to Trade. (b) To stimulate Home Indusiries, and increase their number. (c) To give more work and better wages. (d) To enable us to bargain with other countries. (e) To unite the Empire by giving the Colonies the Preference they ask. Next year tln-re will be another Colonial Conference. If the Government a^gain shut the door m their faces, our Colonies will be driven to accept from Foreign Countries what we deny them, and then it will be too late. (6) A COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME OF INSURANCE against Invalidity of al: kinds, including Old Age. Add to these,—the Reform of our Poor Law Svstciii the relief of Agricultural Land from the burdens of increased taxation; and Justice to the Licensed Trade, as to e-very other section of the communitv; and we have, as it appears to me. the lines along which runs the path of true progress. The Country is now faced with dangers of the gravest kind:—We are threatened with the destruction of our Constitution—the People's only safe- guard; the disruption of the Kingdom and with it the Empire; while our very existence as a nation is imperilled by the neglect of the Navy—our National insurance. No stronger indictment could be brought against any Government. In the deepest earnestness, therefore. I appeal to you to see to it. by vour at this Election, that such things shall not be. I have the honour to be, Sir. Your faithful Servant. MERVYN PEEL. "VVill you submit Tariff Reform to a referendum ? asked Mr. Asquith, "Yes I will," promptly replied Mr. Balfour, and will 0 you submit Home Rule to a referendum ? *4 Pooh, pooh," cried the Radicals, this is a Tory dodge Aff m n, DUTY VOTE £ MERVYN PEEL YOUR NFiGHROHR AND FRIEND. t) B t) haM!
