Allies' Just Cause. Speech by Mr. Herbert Lewis, M.P. at Ffynnongroew. A well-attended meeting was held at Ffynnongroew on Monday night to hear an address by the Right Hon. J. Herbert Lewis, M.P., on the war. Mr. T. J. Pow- nall was voted to the chair. At the outset of his address, Mr. Lewis paid a tribute to Mr Thomas Burt, "Father" of the House of Commons, whose resigna- tion was announced a few days ago. Dur- ing a debate on one occasion Mr. Burt de- scribed how his fellow-workmen had insis- ted on his going into Parliament, and the whole House broke forth into loud cheers. It was one of the greatest tributes he had seen paid to a public man. The Foreign Secretary (Sir Edward Grey), who had met all the ambassadors and leading representa- tives of other countries, and who was per- haps in a better position to express an opinion than any other leading man, said that Thomas Burt was the finest gentleman he had ever met (applause). That was a great tribute to a working collier. Mr. Burt was 78 years of age, and he would be followed into his well-earned retirement by the respect of all who knew him, and parti- cularly by the class to which he belonged and to which he had always been faithful. QUESTION OF ARBITRATION. Mr. Lewis then proceeded to speak of the various aspects of the war, dealing with the objections to the war which had been sum- marised in a letter he had received on en- tering the meeting. One objection put for- ward in the letter was that the matter ought to have been submitted to arbitra- tion. He pointed out that Great Britain had done more to promote the principles of arbitration than any other country in the world, not even excepting the United States. A few years ago we proposed a treaty of arbitration with that country, which included questions affecting the greatest interests of the countries concern- ed, but which was rejected by the Senate of the United States. Now, under the wise guidance of President Wilson, a great ad- vance had been made (applause). It was Germany which had refused to entertain any form of arbitration. It was Germany which had successively attacked Russia and France, and violated Belgian neutrality. Before the war oommenced Sir Edward Grey had done everything possible to induce the countries concerned to meet in confer- ence, but what wele the use of such arbitra- tion when war had broken out, and when there were millions in the field at each other's throats? We had to take the course that seemed right. Subsequent events had shown wfih overwfcelaimg force that it was the right coarse. But for that France would have been. crashed, anct the case of Belgium would have been hopeless, and we should not have had a friend in the world. Every country would have pointed the fin- ger of scorn at us, and our influence would be gone. He was glad that Britain had stood for the right (applause). Other speakers, including the Rev. Ar- mon Ellis, followed, and the meeting closed frith a hearty vote of tlianks to Mr. Lewis for his address.

COUNCIL DIFFERENCES SETTLED. A dispute between the Rhyl Council and the St. Asaph (Denbigh) Rural District Council as to the water supply of the vil- lage of Llanddulas, on the North Wales coast, was amicably settled at Rhyl on Thursday, at a conference presided 'over by Major Norton, of the Local Government Board. The Rhyl Council supply Llanudulas with water by motor, and the Rural District Council complained of the uncertain pres- sures, and suggested a new scheme and pumping plant, while the Rhyl Council said that all that was required was for the Llanddulas people to pay for a new main direct to the village. It was decided that the Rhyl Council should lay a new main to Abergele, and the Rural Council to pay for a new 4in. main from that town to their district, Rhyl agreeing to reduce the charge for water to Is. fronvis. 3d: per 1000 gallons. This will do away with the proposed pumping plant and the running charges for the same. For twenty years the dispute has gone on, and it was only through it c intervention of the Local Government Beard that it has been settled.

Wonderful Escape from Death. A Gallant Deed at Mostyn Station. SAVED IN FRONT OF A TRAIN. Fell on to the Line: A Narrow Shave. THRILLING STORY. A scene of exceptionally gallant conduct was enacted on Monday evening at Mostyn Railway Station, and resulted in the rescue of Mr. Alexander Barratt, cashier of the Darwen and Mostyn Ironworks, from cer- tain death. Mr. Barratt was returning home to Pres- tatyn from the ironworks, and while await- ing the arrival of the train he entered into conversation with Dr. Evans, Ffynnon- groew, in' the general waiting-room. A down train entered the station, and under the impression that it was the train he ex- pected, Mr. Barratt hurriedly left the wait- ing-room to enter the train. He walked from the station entrance across the plat- form towards the train, and in the darkness stepped into space and fell on the line. The train was a down express on the fast line. Several persons on the platform observed the accident, but were unable to prevent his stepping off the platform, though it is stated someone called out "It is not your train." Running into the station at a good .rate was the train Mr. Barratt expected. It was then between 30 and 40 yards away. Mr. Percival Lloyd, of the Railway Cot- tages, Mostyn, foreman of the Tar Macad- am Works, Mostyn, who was near to, sprang down between the six-foot way to lift Mr. Barratt up. Mr. John Coppack, Connah's Quay, mate of the Albert, was on the point of leaping on to the rail-road, when he saw the on-rushing train and shouted "Pull him away, the train's in." Mr. Lloyd, who is a short light-built man, with an almost SUPERHUMAN EFFORT, heaved Mr. Barratt off the track and bore him heavily against the then stationary fast train, as the on-coming slow all but grazed them. It was the closest escape anyone could have had. So quick was the action that for the moment those on the platform who saw it concluded that both men had been caught by the train. However, in a few moments rescued and rescuer were seen to be safe, and as the train moved out they were brought round on to the platform. Mr. Barratt was quite conscious, but had sustained a esvere scalp wound at the back of his head, which bled profusely, and an abrasion on the side of the nose and face, and complained of pain in his side, the latter probably caused by his fall on to the rails. Dr. Evans, with whom Mr. Barratt had just been conversing, rendered first aid and took him in his car to his surgery at Ffynnongroew, and after dressing his wounds conveyed the injured man to his home at Prestatyn. The incident caused the utmost concern in Mostyn, where Mr. Barratt is so well- known and highly respected, and fhe sin- cerest sympathy is felt for him in hie suf- fering. Mr. Williams, die stationmaster, gave every assistance he could at the time of the accident, and Mr. Lloyd was warmly con- gratulated upon his promptitude and brav- ery in a trying moment. With modesty he discounted the deed, and said his satisfac- tion and recompense was that the gentle- man's life was saved. U ponsubsequent examination it was found that Mr. Barratt had escaped any serious injury to his side, of which he had complained, and on Tuesday morning we were pleased to hear that he had passed a good night and was improving satisfactori- 1y.

Interesting Holywell Wedding. REES—FOULKES. List of Presents. There was a large congregation present at the Parish Church, Holywell, on Wed- nesday week, to witness the marriage of the Rev. David Rees, of Ashton-in-Maker- field, lately curate of Holywell, and Miss Edith Maude Foulkes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Foulkes, Bron Holway. and Cross Street, Holywell. The parties being so closely connected with the Church-the bridegroom having held his first curacy there, and the bride taken a prominent part as deputy organist of the Church and organist of the Sunday School and St. Peter's Chapel, as well as a Sunday school teacher-it was only natural that the wed- ding should be chorally celebrated. As the bride entered the Church with her father, who gave her away, the clergy and choris- ters met them at the door and preceded them to the chancel steps, the processional hymn being "Heavenly Father, send Thy Blessing." The Rev. J. W. Thomas, Vicar, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Alban O. Thomas, Vicar of Forden, and the Rev. G. D. Jones, curate. The bride, who was costumed in cream Russian face cloth, with cream velvet picture hat, was panied by her sisters, Misses Mary and Maggie Foulkes, who wore light brown cor- duroy velvet costumes with hats to match, < and carried bouquets of carnations. The Rev. O. Rees, Vicar of Bagillt, was Tciest man. At the close of the ceremony Mr. Gwilym Morris played the Wedding March. The reception was at Bron Holway, and during the afternoon the Rev. and Mrs. D. Rees left Holywell on their honeymoon. p "DID A WALTZ." Judge Moss was occupied until a late hour at the Rhyl County Court, on Friday, in deciding a case in which Mr. Whittaker, car proprietor, Rhyl, sued Messrs. Price and Co., car proprietors, St. Asaph, for re- covery of £ 24 17s. 7d. damages as a result of a collision. It was alleged by the plaintiff that while his car was proceeding from St. Asaph to Denbigh the defendants' car suddenly dash- ed out from behind a carriage and pair, cut across the road, and collided with the car. The impact was such that both cars "did a waltz" on the road, one colliding with a wall. Defendants' plea was that there was plenty of room for their car to pass, but that the plaintiff did not slow down on see. ing the other car, and so run into the de- fendant's vehicle. His Honour pointed out that both drivers were to blame, and he found for the de- fendant, but without costs.

--414- DEATH OF DOWAGER LADY HANMER. News was received in Oswestry on Tuesday of the death of Dowager Lady Mary Hanmer, mother of the present baronet. Sir Wyndham Hanmer, Bettis- field Hall, Flintshire. She was the widow of Sir Edward Hanmer. The present baronet is her only son. She was a daughter of the late Mr. R. Foose, Liffey Bridge,'Dublin. She took keen interest in slum work in the East End of London. Despite her great age she attended the recent coming-of-age of her grandson.

WAR OFFICE AND SOLDIERS' WIVES. Replying to a communication from the secretary of the Huddersfield branch of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Families Association, the Home Office states that the circular is- sued by the Home Office on behalf of the War Office has been altogether misunder- stood.
