HOLYWELL, LENTEN SERVICES—The special preacher at the Lsnten service in the Parish Church, on Wednesday opening last, was the Rev. George Williams, M.A., rector of Trefonen. COUNTY COURT.—The monthly County Court was hold on Tuesday, beforo His Honour Sir Horatio Lioyd, Judge; Mr. H. A. Cope, Registrar. There were no oases of interest before the court, and only a few judgment autninon-ea were heard. HEAVY RAINFALL.—The fall of rain from Friday to Monday was exceptionally heavy. During the night of Saturday, a large piece of the retaining wall of the garden of Stratford House gave way and fell into New-road, oarryirig with it a quantity of the soil bank. Mr. Albert Sutton, of Deansgate, Manchester, is about to issue a Bibliographical catalogue of the Welsh Topography and Genealogy, collected by the late J. P. Earwaker, M.A., F.S.A of Pensarn. He shall be pleased to send a copy to any of your readers who may be interested in the subject. GOOD FRIDAY ORATORIO The members of the Church Choral Society intend giving a performance of the Lenten oratorio, The Crucifixion' by Sir John Stainer, in the Parish Church, on Good Friday. SYLVESTER'S MERRY MAKERS—The above-named variety oompany occupy the Assembly Hall this week and draw large audiences. The gifts are attractive novelties introduced into the show. Other information will be be found in the advertising columns. PENDREF MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.—A good number of the members of this sooiety gathered together last Thursday evening. Mr. Daniel Pierce (vice-pref-ident of the society), presided. The usual preliminaries having been taken, a most interesting p"per entitled Take care of Number One," was read by Miss H. F. Edwards, which was thoroughly enjoyed, and for which a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the writer, proposed by Mr. R. G. Davies and seconded by Miss Lizzie Jones. During the meeting a short reading entitled "Watch" was given by Mr. J. R. Evans. URBAN DisTRicr COUNCIL ELECTION.—This being the first year of the Urban Council, the first five out of the fifteen members constituting the Council, who retire are—Messrs. Wm. Freeman, Perthyterfyn Cottage John W. Davies, Whitford Street; John E. Jones, Victoria Buildings; John H. Hague, High Street; and H. A. Cope, Saithaelwyd. Nominations of candidates olose on Monday next, the 16th inst., the last day which candidates may withdraw is Friday, the 20th, and in the event of a contest the polling will take place on Monday, the 30th inst., Mr. Robert Thomas being the returning offioer. A RELIC OF OLD HOLYWBLL.—It will be remem- bered that the Urban Council some little time ago, gave the Rev. Father Beaaclerk permission to take down a portion of the fence wall at St. Wintlfride's Well, in order to make an easier entrance for cripples to the Well. We learn that the gate about to be put up there is one which was used at the Well about three hundred years ago. The gate formerly was in the procession of the Rev. Father Lythgoe, of Holywell, and subsequently it fell into the hands of a gentleman residing in England, who has pre- sented it to the Right Rev. Bishop Mostyn, who has given it to Father Beauclerk. The movement inaugurated last summer for building a large new Catholic Church in Hclywell is rapidly assuming definite form. One plan proposed was to double the size of the existing Church, but the proposal which meets with more general acceptance is to build a fine and handsome Church on an entirely new site. THE JUDGE AND TUB PREACHER'S SWEETMEATS.— At the Holywell County Court on Tuesday, before His Honour Sir Horatio Lloyd, the only case that created any interest was a short passage between his Honour and a plaintiff suing for a confectionery account. The plaintiff said that the defendant was in a good position, he was clerk to a school board, connected with a newspaper, and several other things, besides being a local preacher. His Honour remarked that the defendant wrote to say that'he was not a clerk to a school board, and that he was only a correspondent for a Welsh newspaper and rarely made more than 4s. a week. Plaintiff replied that the defendant represented that he was the editor of a Welsh paper at Barmouth. Ho went out preach- ing somewhere or other every Sunday.—His Honour What does he get for that ?-.Plaintiff I cannot say what they pay him for a sermon (laughter).—His Honour It will not be so much an hour I suppose ? (renewed laughter).-Plaintiff He was coming from a preaching tour when he gave me the order for the sweets.—His Honour: What were they, voice drops for preaching (laughter).—The order applied for was granted.

FLINT. SAD BEREAVEMENT IN INSPECTOR J ONBS' FAMILY. —General sympathy was felt throughout Flint with Inspeotor R Jones and family on Sunday, when it became known that a second member of his young family had fallen a victim to the diphtheretic epidemic prevailing in the borough. The day of the fuDeral of the first child who died from diphtheria, the youngest of the family, a bright little girl, named Evadna, three years of age, was taken ill and in spite of medical skill and trained turning the child breathed her last on Sxtnday, and on Tuesday was laid to rest with her sister in the Cemetery. The Rector (Rov W LI Nicholas) officiated, and the respect for and sympathy with the bereaved parents was abundantly shown by the attendance at the funoral and the large number of wreatfas sent by sympathising friends.

PARISH MEETINGS IN FLINTSHIRE. HOLYWELL PARISH. GREENFIELD WARD (5) ANOTHER ELECTION. The meeting for the Greenfield Ward of Holvwell Parish was held on Monday night, at the Victoria Hall. The attendance of electors was large. Mr J. Petrie, Abbey House, was elected to preside, and Mr A. F. Williams was acting clerk. Up to the last minute or so nothing was done, when Mr. Peter Williams demanded a poll. Mr. Bromley expressed a desired to withdraw in order to save the expense of a contested election, and suggested that Mr. Peter Williams take his place. The Chairman pointed out that two candidates tied with 18 votes for sixth place-Mr. Thomas Hughes and Mr. Peter Williams. Mr. Bromley said he was agreeable to the matter being left to the meeting, which of the two candidates should be selected. Mr. Thos. Hughes would make a good parish councillor, and it did not matter to him which of the two gentlemen were returned. The Chairman asked Mr. Bromley would he sign his name to the withdrawal at the back of his nomination paper. Mr. Peter Williams asked to be allowed to with- draw his demand for a poll. Mr. Thomas Hughes said he would demand apoll. Mr. Bromley said he was rather surprised at Mr. Hughes demanding a poll. He was a gentleman who always advocated the keeping down of rateB. Mr. Hughes reminded Mr. Bromley that on the last ocoasion Mr. Bromley demanded a poll. A vote of thanKs was passed to the Chairman, and the meeting terminated. BAGILLT (WEST WARD). -Fourgeats. The above meeting was held at the Board Sohools, Bagillt, on Monday evening last. NORTHOP PARISH. NORTHOP WALtD.-No oontest. The annual parish meeting for Northop was held on Monday. The old members, Messrs John Watkinson, William Blackwell, Peter Williams, TLomas Jones, and T Evans, were nominated, and Mr Edward Jones (Northop-hall) in place of Mr Joan Read, and, there being no oppoeition, were elected.

WEPRE WARD.—No contest. The meeting to elect seven members for Wepre Ward (whioh comprises the electoral district of Connah's Quay) upon the Northop Parish Council, was held in St. Mark's Schools, the vicar, the Rev. Thomas Williams, presiding. The following seven candidates were nominated and declared elected:- Messrs Walter Baird, John Thomas Humphries, Hugh Hughes, Archibald Ferguson, Edw. Blano, Thomas Owen, and Edward Roberts.

FFYNNONGROEW.—No oontest. I The annual Parish meeting of the Ffynnongroew Ward was held at the Undenominational School on Monday evening laet, when a large and enthusiastic gathering of electors crowded the building to excess. The heckling of the several candidates caused considerable merriment, and the attempt of a strong denunciation of the retiring Councillors by one of the candidates wss the means of their giving a good account of their year's work much to the satisfaction of the majority present. On the with- drawallof Edward Williams and Mrs Batters, a contest has been avoided, the other five being declared duly elected. Several matters of complaints relating to footpaths were brought before the meeting and will in due course be taken up by the Council. The customary vote of thanks to the Chairman brought the meeting to a close;

ST. ASAPH. Forty-six candidates were nominated for 13 seats and among them were several ladies, their names being greeted with laughter. The Chairman (Mr Alun Lloyd), said he had reason to believe that the County Council at their next meeting were likely, as the result of inquiries held in the court house, to accede to the desire of the parishioners of Waen and Bodelwyddan to become separate parishes, and be divided from St Asaph. If that was the case, there would be another election for St Asaph within two months. He therefore asked the meeting to re-eleot the old councillors, and postpone the election until the division of the parishes. -This course was ultimately agreed to.

CAERWYS.—No Contest. YSCEIFIOG.—No Contest. The annual election for parish councillors for Yaoeifiog, was held in the National Schoolroom on Monday evening last, at 6.30 p.m. The Chairman of the Council (Mr Wm. Thomas, J.P.), being a candidate for a seat for the ensuing year vacated the ebair, and Mr Samuel Edwards, assistant overseer, was unanimously elected chairman. There were seventeen candidates for the eleven seats. The first eleven were elected. The result came as a surprise to all as the chairman of the last Council is thrown out, and four conservatives have displaced that number of liberals, the conservatives will have a majority on the newly elected Counoil. No poll was demanded. A vote of thanks was accorded to the Chairman.

HALKYN. -Eleven seats. A Parish Meeting for the purpose of electing Parish Councillors was held at the Schoolroom, Halkyn, on Monday evening last. There was a fair number of the electors present. The chair was taken by Aid Peter Jones. THE RETURNED CONVICT AS A CHAPEL SNEAK. At the Holywell Police Court on Saturday morning, before Mr R. Sankey, Wm. Alexander Roberts was brought up on remand charged on suspicion with being in unlawful possession of a large quantity of wearing apparel. Police- Constable Thomas Jones, of Caerwya, who had charge of the case. and who has been making investigations since the previous Wednesday, said he not only asked for a further remand on the first oharge, but also on a charge of stealing from St. Winifride's Catholic Church, St. Asaph, a number of devotional books belonging to Mr Sisson, Talardy. He produced one prayer book belonging to Mr Wilfred NY, Sisson being one of several prisoner had stolen from the Church and belonging to Mr Sisson'S family. The name of Mr Wilfred Sieaon was on a devotional card inside the book. Prisoner had written his name on the fly-leaf of the book and also that of his wife. The book had been identified by Mr SisBon.-The accused being asked had he any reason to advance against a remand said "It is a most scandalous shame for that man (the police) to tell an abominable lie for the purpose of getting me into troubl If I got those things dishonourably the police would have got to know by now who they belonged to."—The Magistrate: That will do you no good- This case has to be investigated. At the annual meeting of this Council, on Wednesday, at Mold, Dr. Easterby was elected chairman for the ensuing year. Mr Pennant moved that Lord Kenyon be elected vice- chairman. He said there was no doubt when the County Council first met there was a good deal of political feeling introduced into their discussions. This feeling had diminished to a very great extent, but it still remained in the election of officers. It had become almost a necessity that before a member could hold high office in the Council he should be of a certain colour. They would all agree Lord Kenyon was a most able person and was most impartial, and the noble lord would bring dignity to the business of the Council. Mr W. Davies pro- posed that Mr W. E. Williams, of Rhyl, be elected vice-chairman. Mr J. H. Lewis. U, P., said in giving his vote in favour of Mr Williams he hoped it would not be considered as implying any want of respect to the noble lord ,,1) hud been proposed. He thought in connection with these appointments on the County Coune;l some regard should be paid to long and distinguished public service, On being put to the vote 27 members voted in favour of Mr Williams and 17 for Lord Kenyon. Mr W. E. Williams, in moving that a number of gentlemen represent the Council on the Standing Joint Committee, characterised that committee as a nursery for the rearing of J.P.'s.

MILWB DRAINAGE SCHEME.—We arc glad to elate that substantial progress is being made aDd hope to announce in the cour-e of a few weeks the comple- tiou of arrangements for commencing operations.
