SOUTH WALES FINANCE. j, (Cardiff Account Day, Dec. 30th.) WEDNESDAY. December 29th, 1897. There has been a complete dearth of £ business in the local market to-day, no f. business being reported officially, whilst he Cardiff Exchange was closed at mid- day. Despite this fact, however, the undertone of the market is of quite a buoyant character. Doubtless, with the clearance of the account and the advent of the New Year we shall see business going with something like the old swing. It will be noted that a number of stocks and shares are marked xd to-day. The following stocks and shares are marked xd, the mean price being given in 3ach case Cardiff Railway Preferred, 96 do. De- benture Stock, 105; Port Talbot Ordinary, 9% Vale of Glamorgan Guaranteed, 132%; Barry Debenture Stock, 110^6; Mid-Wales A 472 per Cent. De- benture Stock, 135; Neath and Brecon First 4 per Cent. Debenture Stock, 128; Penarth Harbour Stock, 145 Rhondda and Swansea Bay Debenture Stock, 128 Rhymney do., 146 Vale of Glamorgan 3 per Cent. Debenture Stock, 102% Bristol Brewery Preferences, 16% Rhondda Valley Brewery Preferences, 1034; do. Debentures, 108; Albion De- bentures, 105 Cambrian Debentures, 100; D. The traffic receipts on the Barry Railway for the week ended December 25th amounted to £ 8,173, against £ 6.953 in the corresponding week of last year—an in- crease of £ 1,175. The aggregate increase for the 26 weeks amounts to £ 10,480. The traffic receipts on the Rhymney Railway for the week ended December 25th amounted to L4,494, against S.4,460 in the corresponding week of last year-an increase of X34. The aggregate increase for the 26 weeks amounts to 11,250. The traffic receipts on the Cambrian Railways for the week ended December 26th amounted to £ 3,894, against E3,875 in the corresponding week of last year—an in- crease of JE19. The aggregate increase for the 26 weeks amounts to 13.894. The traffic receipts on the Rhondda and Swansea Bay Railway for the week ended December 26th amounted to £1,448, against £1,361 in the corresponding week of last year-an increase of JE87. The aggregate increase for the 26 weeks amounts to £ 2,354. In our news columns we give a summary of the Milford Docks Company's Bill dealing with its Debenture and Preference Stocks.

LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Wednesday. Money was again in strong demand, and 3 to 33i4 per cent. was paid for advances over the night on short fixtures, whilst the loans which became due at the Bank were renewed at 4 per cent., whilst this institu- tion also did a large business in discounts at 3 per cent. and upwards. The Dis- count Market remained very firm on the basis of 3 to 3% per cent. for best three months' bills. On the Stock Exchange the arrange- ment of the account, which is progressing satisfactorily, again largely engaged the attention of dealers, whilst fresh business was checked by the holiday season, and fears of dearer money through an advance I zl. in the Bank rate to-morrow is not gener- ally expected in influential quarters. Markets have shown a somewhat irregular II and unsettled tendency. Considerable un- easiness is still being felt with regard to the political outlook in the Far I East. Consols, however, closed without change, though Japanese and Chinese loans were flat. Amongst other Foreign Stocks Spanish gave way on sales on French account. Home Railway Stocks were not much dealt in, though traffic re- burns were extremely good, the only feature aeing an advance in Metropolitans on influen- bial'purchases. American descriptions gave way in response to New York advices, the rumours though denied regarding the resig- nation of Mr Gage somewhat shaking the confidence of the market. Canadians Lines also gave way in sympathy. South Africans, after being strong, gave way on weaker I prices from Paris. The market for Home Government Securities was quiet. Consols remain 112-1 for money, and 112% for the account. Bank Stock fell 1. Colonial Inscribed Stocks were un- changed. ? Foreign Bonds were irregular. Chinese 5 per Cent. Gold and Japanese Scrip fell the latter to 100; Ecuador, 1 Spanish Fours, Egyptian Daira, Brazil 1889, Argentine Funding, and Turkish 1894 and Defence Loan, do. First Group, however, advanced Second do., Third and Fourth do., Russian Fours, Uruguay Old Loan, Peru Deben- tures, and Cedula B, 34. Home Railways mark a rise of 1 in Metro- politan and in Midland Deferred, Great Central Deferred, North-Westerns, Great Westerns, and Hull and Barnsley, whilst Southern Deferred Stocks and Lancashire fell 34; and Caledonian Deferred and Chatham Ordinary, American Railways were flat and lower, Milwaukees marking a fall of Lake Shores, North Pacific Preference, and Union Pacifics, Norfolk Preference, do. Common, Southern Preference, Common, Denver Preference, Erie Fust reference, Reading Shares And First Preference, and Wabash Prefer- ence, 34 Louisvilles, Missouri, Kansas, Ontarios, and Central Pacifics, and Atchison Preference, 34 do. Ordinary, however, rose y9 and Illinois and Penn- 'sylvanias. Canadian Pacifics fell in spite of the satisfactory revenue statement given below, and Grand Trunk Guaranteed -Iropped and First and Second Pre- ferences Third do., and Or- dinary ft. Mexican Railways were firm on the :rood traffic return, First Preference advancing and Ordinary Y4. Chartereds, Consolidated Goldfields, East Rands, Johannesburg Investment, Simmer and Jack, and Shebas being lower, the latter to 272, and Transvaal Gold. Modderfontein rose Rand '6 Mines, Ferreiras, 34; Driefontein fg, to 4 Comet, ï\- to Knight's to 4% Rhodesia Exploration, Angelos ft, to 5TIr; Anglo-French t03. West Australians were weak in the absence of support. Golden Horseshoe were ft lower at 8 Kalgurlis to 6 and Han- nan's Brownhill, Anaconda Copper Shares were 73 better at 5. Rio Tintos, however, fell i-. No bullion operations were reported at the Bank to-day. The total operations since last Wednesday show an efflux of R99,000 on the balance. The Silver Market continued very dull, and the price for bars was fixed at 2672d per ounce, showing a further decline of Forward delivery was also d lower, at 25%d per ounce. Calcutta Exchange was quoted at Is 3%d; Bombay, Is 3 29-32d; Hong Kong, Is 11 %d; do. 4 months, Is ll^d Shanghai, 2s 8d do. 4 months, 2s 834d. Remittances on India for 4,000,000 rupees were offered for tender to-day by the Indian Council, and the following amounts in bills were allotted On Calcutta, 1,000,000 rupees Bombay, 700,000 Madras, 400,000 total, 2,100,000 rupees. Tenders for bills at Is 3Nd per 16 rupee will receive in full. The Council also specially allotted 10,000 rupees in bills on Calcutta at Is 3 27-32d per rupee. The Paris Bourse opened steady, but closed dull. Leading South Africans were weaker. Exchange Cheques on London remain at 25.23%.

CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, WEDNESDAY. There is in reality very little change to note in the position of the steam coal market to-day. Tonnage has come along pretty plentifully during the last few days, and now the supply of coal has run short. The bad weather will keep a good many steamers back otherwise cases of demurrage would have been rather numerous. Most people seem to have had enough of the holidays now, however, and consequently there is a general belief that all departments of the market will be in Nfull operation to-morrow. Nearly all the offices closed early in the afternoon again. The following were the closing prices First class steam coal, 10s 6d to lis; seconds, 98 3d to 10s drys, 9s 3d to 10s; first class Monmouthshire coal, 9s to 9s 3d second class do., 8s 9d to 8s lOJd (Cardiff shipment) first class smail, 5s 6d seconds, 5s to 5s 3d; inferior from 4s best house coal, 10s 9d to lis; seconds, 9s 9d to 10s 3d No. 3 Rhondda large, 10s 6d to 10s 9d; through and through, 9s to 9s 3d; small, 8s to 8s 3d No. 2 Rhondda large, 8s 6d to 8s 9d through and through, 6s 9dto 7s; and small, from 4s 6d f.o.b. WRECKS AND CASUALTIES. FSPLCIA-R, TELEGRAMS FROM LLOYD'S AGENTS. I A New Orleans cablegram reports that the British steamer itaiilore Head, for Belfast, is aground at Head of Passes. A Hamburg telegram states that the Russian barque Paul, anchored off Altenbruch, was struck on the stem by the British steamer Loch Lomond, inward bound. The former lost bowsprit, jibboom, and anchor, and had stem carried away. The steamer is reported undamaged. A Plymouth telegram on Wednesday morning states that the tug Vixen assisted the steamer Indianic, from London for Cardiff, off a lee shore in Plymouth Sound to a safe anchorage. The steamer Brooklyn City, from Swansea for New York, hns put back to Bristol disabled. The British steamer Holyrood, from Newport News, has arrived at Liverpool in tow with tail of shaft broken. The steamer Hebe, of and for Liverpool, from Whitehaven, with pig iron, foundered near More- cambe Bay Lightship. Crew sftvecl. An Amsterdam telegram states that the lightship Haaks reported that the steamer ;nora passed on the 28th inst. showing signals of distress, steering westward. A Batoum telegram states that the following casualties occurred during a hurricane :The Rus- sian steamer Lazak broke adrift and collided with the BriMsh steamer Turbo; both were damaged, the latter not seriously all steamers broke their ropes. Two lighters with tin plates from the British steamer Excelsior stranded, the cargoes are being salved. The British steamer Strathtay, ao Delaware Break- water, reports damage to her plating on the port side, causing a slight leak. She will temporarily repair and proceed. The British steamer City of Cadiz, inward bound, and the Norwegian steamer Gambetta collided off Altona, near Hamburg. Both were damaged above the watsr line. The former afterwards collided with the German steamer Licata, outward bound, receiving further damage. The Licata returned to Hamburg with rail damaged. The British barque Northernhay has arrived at Newcastle, Australia, and reports having been holed by her anchor mooring and compelled to be run ashore to prevent sinking. She must dry dock.

CAROL SINGER'S SUICIDE. James William Holmes, Westfield-road, Leeds, hanged himself on Boxing Day, exactly 12 yoars after his mother committed suicide and the day before his 30th birthday. There appears to be no motive for the deed, unless it be that the anni- versary of his mother's tragic fate preyed upon him more heavily than usual, and that brooding over the mournful event caused him to tempor- arily lose his reason. Holmes and his wife spent Christmas Day with some relatives in Wood- house Carr. returning in the evening to their home in Westfield-road. On Sunday night they again went to Woodhouse Carr with other rela- tives, and kept up the old-faahioned Christmas by singing carols outside the house. They remained at Woodhouse all night, and next morning (Box- ing Day) Holmes returned to his house to attend to his business, that of a greengrocer. The same evening he was found hanging in his stable. Holmes bad procured the rope from an orange box and had fastened it round one of the beams, finally tying it round his neck, and thus strangling himself.

A PATHETIC STORY. An old man, who gave the name of Robert Doran, applied to the Romford Guardians for relief. He said he was 87 years of age, and wanted to come into the house, but his wife, who was 90, said she would rather die first.- The Chairman You would be able to live to- gether and be happy enough.—The Applicant Yes, your Honour 1 telled her so. I was coming by myself the other day, but she followed me, crying, and put her hand on my shoulder, and begged me not to leave her. A lady gave her a shilling, and we went back together. SUDDEN DEATH AT A PARTY Dr. Thomas held an inquest on Tu-;id- <,t St. Pancras on the body of William Billingham, aged 36, painter and decorator, lately residing at 168, Portnall-road, Paddington. While the de- ceased, who had rheumatic fever and suffered from heart disease, was visiting friends at 148, Regent's Park-road, on Christmas night, he was seized with what appeared to be a fainting fit and expired instantly. Dr. C. Reed, a neigh- bouring practitioner, who made an autopsy, said Mr Billingham had an abnormal heart. It was twide the normal size in a man of his age. He had just had supper when he died. His stomach was considerably dilated and extended. As a result of this the diaphragm was pushed up and stopped the heart's action. Death ensued immediately from syncope. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony.

DETERMINED SUICIDE. A strange mode of quitting this vale of tears was selected by Wm. V/ait, aged 52, a clerk, who committed suicide at 37, Gunter-grove, Chelsea, by suffocating himself with coal gas. He was shown at the inquest on Tuesday to have been depressed over money matters, he having borrowed various sums. On Thursday he kept to his room all day, and when the door was forced open by the police he was found in bed dead. There was a strong smell of gas in the room, three jets were turned on fully, and the lead gas- pipe cut through. The chimney was also stuffed up with a number of newspapers, the bottom of the door being blocked up with three towels, and the windows, which he invariably had open, were closed and fastened. Sergeant Adie produced a blunt-edged razor, found on deceased, with which he evidently cut the gas-pipe. He found a large number of pawntickets in tne room. Dr. Haynes said the death was due to coal-gas poisoning. Nine per cent. of gas would kill, but this room was saturated. A verdict of Suicide while temporarily insane was returned.

A YEAR'S DUELS IN ITALY. Duelling on the Continent continues to be as healthy a pastime as ever. In Italy, out of 1,840 fire-eaters who exchanged pistol shots or sword thrusts on the field of honour during last year, Only one yielded up his breath on the spot, though five others eventually succumbed to their injuries. The mortality among Italian duelists for 1896 thus works out at the insignificant rate of about per cent. Life insurance com- panies should note this. Eight hundred and seven other encounters terminated without blood hav- ing been shed. Fifteen were between military men, thirteen between soldiers and civilians, and in seventy-five cases both the combatants were civilians.

SIR HENRY IRVING'S NARROW ESCAPE. We (Daily Chronicle) mentioned on Tuesday, in giving the news that a horse and van had been •driven in the Thames at Richmond and the driver and horse drowned, that Sir Henry Irving once nearly lost his life at the same spot. Few people know, however, how narrow an escape two of our most famous actors and one of our most famous actresses had on that occasion. Sir Henry Irving, Miss Ellen Terry, and Mr Toole were being driven in a closed carriage one night from Richmond, when the driver took a wrong turn at Asgill-road. He had nearly reached the river when a cyclist dashed after him and shouted for him to stop. A minute later all three would probably have been drowned. This, we may add, is not the only narrow escape from a strange and sudden death which Sir Henry Irving has had in recent times.
