. SOCJTH WALES FINANCE.
SOCJTH WALES FINANCE. (Cardiff Account Days, Nov. 11th and 26th.) MONDAY, November 1st, 1897. The 1st of November is one of the recognised Stock Exchange holidays of the year, and consequently all the local brokers' offices have been closed as in London. Therefore there is no business to record. The South Wales Investment Circular, issued by Messrs E. T. Lyddon and Co., Cardiff, for the current month contains a number of facts of considerable interest to investors. We make the following extracts from an article dealing with prospective local dock and railway schemes :— Interest is perhaps mainly centred in the action of the Cardiff Railway (Bute) Company and the Taff Vale Railway, as the former will hardly be content with the victory gained last Session, but is likely to seek power for extending the line which at present gives but a very incomplete system. Access to Pontypridd ha3 been obtained, and it is said an extension to Merthyris now contemplated with a revival of the branch lines disallowed by Parliament last Session. Any new lines made by the Cardiff Railway (Bute) Company must directly or indirectly be to the prejudice of the existing companies, and any Bill seeking power to make such lines will therefore be opposed by the Taff Vale and presumably by the Rhymney Railway Companies to the utmost. The Taff Vale Company, it may be assumed, will make another attempt to get their Windsor Dock Bill through, and will aiso endeavour to free itself from the burdensome obligations entered into with the Bute Docks Company in connec- tion with the handling of traffic at the Docks before that company became a com- petitor for the carriage of coal to Cardiff. The Cardiff Railway'Company will be the chief opponent to the Windsor Dock scheme, and it is rumoured that the same company will also pro- mote a Bill for a new dock on their own account. As freighters, importers, and others connected with the trade of the port will welcome increased dock accommodation, these Bills will probably receive strong support from traders generally. Nothing is known of the Barry Company's inten- tions, but it is believed the directors will make another attempt to secure an independent en- trance to Cardiff for the better accommodation of the large passenger traffic which is expected between the two towns, and also in view of the carriage of Monmouth- shire coal. It has been stated that negotiations have been again on foot for the amalgamation of the Rhymney Railway and tha Cardiff Railway (Bate Dock) Company, in which case Parlia- mentary sanction would, it may be presumed, have to be sought. While it may be taken for granted that the desire for amalgamation exists, and that possibly some mild attempt may have been made to re-open negotiations between the two concerns, we believe matters have gone no farther than this, and for the present at least there is little probability of-any change in the position of the two companies. The Parlia- mentary notices might perhaps show further developments, and these accordingly will be looked for with interest. The receivers of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company having failed to pro- vide for the payment of the coupons of the 5 per Cent. First Mortgage Gold Bonds due November 1st, Messrs Brown, Shipley, and Co. give notice to the bondholders that it is their intention to take immediste steps for the protection of the bondholders' interests.

CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, MONDU. There was a fairly good attendance on 'Change to-day, but the fact of it being the first of the month and electiou day--to say nothing of the restricted supply of tonnage—militated against business in the steam coal market. Some of the collieries in the Rhondda are working very irregularly owing to the want of trucks, Meanwhile quotations show little or no change. The following were the closing prices :— First class steam coal, 10s 6d to lis; seconds, 9s 9d to 10s 3d drys, 9s 9d to 10s first class Monmouthshire coal, 9s to 9s 3d; second class do., 8s 9d to 9s (Cardiff shipment) first class small, 5s 9d to 6s 3d; seconds, 5s to 5s 6d; inferior from 4s to4s6d: best house coal, 10s 6d to 10s 9d seconds, 9s 3d to 9s 9d No. 3 Rhondda, large, 10s 9d through and through, 9s to 9s 3d; small, 7s 9d to 8s; No. 2 Rhondda, large, 88 3d through and through, 6s 9d to 7s; and small, from 4s 6d f.o.b. RIVAL FISHMONGERS AT TREORKY.
RIVAL FISHMONGERS AT TREORKY. SCENE IN THE STREET. On Monday, at the Ystrad Police Court (before Mr Ignatius Williams, Mr E. H. Davies, Mr D. W. Davies, and Alderman Lewis), Wm. Stranks, fishmonger and greengrocer, Treorky, was charged with assaulting a tradesman named Orton, conducting a similar business in the same locality. Mr Jas. Phillips, Pontypridd, de- fended. It appeared that the parties' shops are situated opposite to each other near the square. The defendant on the day in question bought some rabbits from a person selling from a cart in the street. He soon afterwards found that they were a bit high." He accused the complainant of having indirectly supplied him with them, and a squabble ensued in the street. Defendant threw a quantity of salt at the complainant, and a crowd gathered around the two indignant men. Two neighbouring tradesmen, named Jones and Arthur, interfered, and conducted the parties home. Soon afterwards the defendant reappeared in the street, having a pair of tongs in his hands, and threatened the complainant just outside his (complainant's) shop. Com- plainant came out, and immediately after he was struck in the face with the weapon by the defen- dant. Dr. Armstrong put some stitches into complainant's lip, which was badly cut. Defen- dant was fined X5, or in default two months' imprisonment with bard labour. The money was paid. -r
A BRUTAL HUSBAND AT CARDIFF.
A BRUTAL HUSBAND AT CARDIFF. At Cardiff Police Court on Monday Samuel Clee (32) was charged in custody with violently assaulting and kicking his wife in Bute-street on Sunday afternoon. P.C. Powell stated that prisoner jumped on the woman, kicked her, threw stones at her, and threatened to kill her. Prose- cutrix, who presented a very miserable appear- ance, stated (sobbing) that for the sake of her three little children she did not wish to press the case. Her husband assaulted her only when he was under the influence of drink. Superintendent Hayward stated however that prisoner was not drunk on the present occasion, and the woman would have fared much worse if it had not been for the interference of the police. A fine of JE5 and costs, or two months' imprisonment, was im- posed, prosecutrix leaving the court crying bit- terly.
A NARROW ESCAPE.
A NARROW ESCAPE. An extraordinary accident happened at the New Dock Works at Liverpool on Monday, by which forty men were placed in jeopardy. A heavy travelling crane toppled over, but was held by the beams from falling to the bottom of the excavation 70 feet deep. The boiler became detached and fell, the steam escaping with a great noise. The men working at the bottom were warned in time to enable them to get clear away.

When Isabel returns home she is speedily confronted with the shadows of the past by the perusal of a short note, in which the writer demands an interview, and threatens unpleasant revelations if this is denied. To anticipate a little, it may be said that Isabel is of semi-Spanish origin. When six- teen years of age she was inveigled into a marriage with Pedro Lopez, a scapegrace, who quickly deserted her for a woman more suited to his amorous propensities. Admiral Dundas had always been taken for a bachelor until he settled down in England and announced Isabel to be his motherless daughter. In the meantime fickle Dame Fortune treated Pedro Lopez rather sum- marily, and that ardent swain left his beloved sunny land to seek hush money from hia wife. Hence the note which awakens a. train of painful memories in the young lady's mind. Isabel is naturally of a frank and honest disposition, but she now resorts to secret meetings, and adopts various expedients for raising the money necessary to silence her unscrupulous husband. Sir George Fairfax pays marked attentions to her, and she is goaded to despair by her impotence. Her husband's demands become more and more intolerable, and in a fit of recklessness she resolves to kill him at their next meeting. For this purpose she procures a Spanish dagger, but when she arrives at the spot agreed upon is horrified-and withal relieved —to find him dead with a stiletto in his breast. After the subsidence of the excitement con- sequent on the discovery of the body of the man (who is quite unknown to all save Isabel) Sir George Fairfax renews his attentions to Miss Dundas, who, feeling herself free, accepts his proposal. The marriage gives general satisfaction, and they have settled down to the usual life of a country squire and his lady, when all Isabel's old fears are revived in an alarming manner by the appearance of Sebastian Lopez, the brother of Pedro. He is marvellously like his deceased brother in appearance; indeed, so close is the resem- blance that Isabel fears there has been a resurrection of the dead. She is soon sneer. ingly disillusioned on the point by Sebastian, who reveals his identity and declares his intention to profit by her secrets, insinuating that she has murdered her husband. He is of a less scrupulous character than hia brother, and his importunity becomes so un. bearable that Isabel resolves to leave her husband (who is ignorant of all this) and to bury herself in London, hoping thus to escape the persecution of the Spaniard. She leaves a token of her love for her husband, and sends him a letter by the first post after her departure, after which she is as com- pletely lost to him as if she had dis- appeared from off the face of the earth. She becomes acquainted with a. kind artist named Robert Faval, who teaches her to paint. Afterwards she forms a habit of visiting a certain spot daily for fresh air. Sebastian learns this, and having laid his plans for her capture secures and carries her off to Spain. Robert Faval learns that Madame de Vere (as Isabel now calls herself) has disappeared, and informs Sir George Fairfax, who reveals the story of his wife's departure. Together they set to work to unravel the mystery. Meanwhile Isabel is a prisoner on a sloop in Spanish waters. The above will give only an idea. ef the earlier portion of the story. The subsequent developments of the plot are very interest- ing, and the story will be eagerly perused by admirers of Miss Russell's work. A TORN Out pAGB. BY JTJORA J^USSELL.
