SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE {Cardiff account days, Dec. 11th and 30th.) TUESDAY, December 8th. 1896. The local market has been extremely quiet And featureless to-day in sympathy doubtless to a large extent with the sagging and irregular tone developed in London. Nearly all the heavy line securities have given way in face of the threatened labour troubles, and local rails have been rather aeglected. Rhondda and Swansea Bay Ordinaries were dealt in to a limited extent -At 25 18s 9d, which is fa below the mean quotation. On the other hand, the Pre- ferences advanced to 13%, without in- ducing sellers to come on the market. Barry 1J per Cent. Consolidated Preference Stock was also better at 143%. London and Provincial Banks were done at 21%, and later on at 21%. the mean price and Alexandra Dock 4 per Cent. Debenture Stock at 125%. being 34 below the mean quotation. Cardiff Empires have fallen back } £ to 7Y2 and Bute 4 per Cent. Preferred Ordinary 1, to 51. Uruguay 3% per Cent. The directors of Arnold, Perrett and Co., in their report for the year ended September 30fh last, state that the interest payable for the year amounts to £ 8,951, and the divi- dend upon the Preference Shares at 6 per cent. per annum to £ 12,000. After charging these sums to net revenue account, and after making provision for depreciation, there remains) to the credit of that account £ 8,114. The payment of a dividend upon the Ordinary Shares at the rate of 4 per cent. per annum, which the directors now recommend should be de- clared, absorbs 28,000, leaving a balance of £ 114 to be carried forward to the next account. Since the date of the last report the directors, in accordance with the policy foreshadowed by the chairman at the last annual meeting, have effected a sale (at the half-year) of the greater portion of the busi ness carried on by the company in Devon- shire, and at the same time purchased the business and tied houses of the Tewkesbury Brewery Company. The sales in both beer and wine and spirit departments have slightly decreased, but the gross profits have been satisfactory, and the general expenses have been reduced, thus showing an increase in the net profits. The traffic receipts on the Taff Vale Railway for the week ended December 5th amounted to 214,332, against £14,039 in the corresponding week of last year, an increase of £293. The aggregate decrease for the 23 weeks amounts to £ 17,388.
