Q.WENNI yAUGHAN) OR, THE FRENCH INVASION; A PEMBROKESHIRE STORY OF PIRATES AND SMUGGLERS. AN ORIGINAL AND STIRRING STORY OF SOUTH WALES. The Proprietors of the Cardiff Twies and South Wales Weekly News have made arrange. noents for the publication of an ORIGINAL STORY OF SOUTH WALES, of thrilling and dramatic interest, entitled, Q.WENNY yAUGHAN; OB THE FRENCH INVASION. This new tele, with its startling incidents and surprises, not only narrates with pictorial faithfulness and historical accuraoy the excit. ing story of the French invasion of Pembroke. shire in February, 1797, but most of the sbartlini; minor events recorded arose out of that invasion, and are closely inwoven into it in this new story, from the first sight of the French ships in St. George's Channel until the final and dramatic denofiemsnt. The course of the story brings upon the scene the chief local actors in the stirring events of that memorable but, happily, frustrated invasion, whose names are now the traditional heritage of the Welsh people; whilst it records a. most interesting story ot love as wall as of war, as a tale of smuggling in which both love and war play some of the principal parte. The publication of this original and stirring local story will commence in the Cardiff Timet on Saturday, December 29bh, 1896. THOU ART THE MAN," And More than Fifty Others. Any one of these Stories would procure recognition and popularity for its author, and indeed such a galaxy of stories as that with which Miss Braddon has enriched the world is to be found nowhere else in English litera- ture. She still merits and retains the title earned long ago, The Queen of Novelists,' and we are gratified to announce that the Opening Chapters of her Fascinating Story, THE L ITTLE A UNTIE, APPEARED IN THB COLUMNS OP THB CARDIFF rjlIMES | AND KSOUTH- WALES '^TEEKLYJ^-EWS ON SATURDAY, QOT. IO, f IN rjIHE J^ITTLE ^UNTIE Pathos, Comedy, and Tragedy are inter. mingled with supreme skill. The Story fascinates the reader because of the exquisite grace and delicacy of portraiture, and the marvellous knowledge of the springs of human action. The central idea of the Story is the passionate, reciprocal devotion of an aunt and her three nephews, who have not the advantage of parental sympathy and restraint. The author weaves around the central characters a charming romance which reveals the minor traits of character and enlists the reader's sympathies for the heroine. THE OPENING CHAPTERS OF THE LITTLE AUNTI E BY miss BRADDON, APPEARED ON gATURDAY, OCTOBER 10TH. E W O M AN O E OF JOINING LIFE. THE Mine MASTER'S v JJAUGHTER, OR, THE MISER'S ATONEMENT, is from the Pen of MR J. MONK FOSTER. who has achieved great popularity as a writer of stories depicting the life of the toil- ing masses in large centres of industry and commerce. The Opening Chapters of this New Story Appeared in the CARDIFF rjlIMES .1. AND TV gOUTH -^TALES WEEKLY NEWS. ON SATURDAY, SEPT. 26TH. To those who have read his previous works our author needs no introduction or praise. His vivid pictures of industrial )ife live in the memory. For the benefit of those unac- quainted with The Queen of the Factory," Slaves of Fate," Children of Darkness," "Through Flood and Flame," or any other of the many successful stories from bis facile pen, we give a few particulars of his career. THE MINE MAS-E*RJS' D AUGHTER OUTLINE OF THE STORY. The Mine Master's Daughter deals with the varying fortunes of Annie Lynn, the charming daughter of a miserly colliery pro- prietor. Father and daughter have widely different temperaments Abraham Lynn is avaricious, unfeeling, vindictive whilst his daughter is generous and sympathetic, and endears herself to all with whom she comes in contact. Across the paths of these two lives there comes John Ulvarston, clever and shrewd, but manly in character. He comes as the new manager for Abraham Lynn, and soon makes drastic changes in the conditions of labour. He deals firmly with the old man, pointing out to the latter the consequences of bis niggardly policy. The miser yields reluctantly and suspiciously to the irresistible arguments and infectious enthusiasm of his now manager, with the result that bis mine develops into a very valuable property. Meanwhile Ulvarston is captivated by Annie Lynn, but honourably refrains from expressing his feelings to his divinity, who is engaged to the son of a local banker named Cunningham. The hero plunges into work, hoping to find therein an anodyne for his disappointment, and succeeds in amassing for himself a considerable fortune from an old mine his employer has refused to work. Fortune's wheel turns slowly but surely, and Abraham Lynn finds himself on the verge of bankruptcy. His daughter's fiance, Cunningham, refuses to help him, but the noble instincts of Ulvarston prompt the latter to assist the old man in his distress. Gradually Annie Lynn learns the true character of Canninghnm, and marries Ulvarston. There are exciting incidents in the coal mines, including the entombment of several miners by a large fall. Ulvarston is over- powered by gas in a daring attempt at rescue, and is injured by a falling rock. The reader becomes interested in the hero and heroine from the first chapter, and follows them with increasing interest through all the vicissitudes which lead tl5 their union.
