The foreign consumers to my mmd are not at all likely to pay the same price for Monmouthshire coalj as for Glamorganshire for the only reason that it,is shipped at Cardiff. It was mooted that a good plan to prevent the shipment of Mon. moathsbire coal at Cardiff would be for Mr Wfenshaw to move a resolution at the Newport Chamber of Commerce recommending that the Newport shippers stay at home and conduct their business from that centre. Mr John X) lion, M.P., second son of the late Mr John Bisko Dillon, was born in 1851. and educated at the Roman Catholic University of Dublin, wherr- lie was distinguished for his pro- MR JOnX DILLON. _.L_I- T, hciency in mathematics. He afterwards studied medicine, and became licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. In 1880 he was returned as mem- ber for Tipporary, but in March, 1883, was obliged to resign his seat on account of ill-health. During his Parlia- mentary career he was one of Mr Parnell's iuosb active supporters, and on Febiuary 2nd, 1881, was the first member" suspended on the occasion of the suspension of the wnoiB jrarneinte party. Jtie was twice imprisoned as a suspect under Mr Forster. Mr Dillon, in company with Mr \V. O'Brien, having been liberated on bail pending a political trial in November, 1890, forfeited the bail and escaped to the United States to fulfil a lecturing engagement there. In February, 1891, be gave himself up to the authorities, and was imprisoned in Ireland. He succeeded Mr Justin McCarthy as leader of the Irish party:

GRAND NEW HOTEL FOR SWANSEA, REBUILDING THE GEORGE." The George Hotel, Wind-street, Swansea, is to be rebuilt on an area of 1,929 square feet. A company has been formed with a capital of £ 35,000. iu £ 5 shares, for which the public will shortly be invited to subscribe. Stone (formerly of the old Mackworth Hotel), Mr John White (monager of Messrs B. Evans and Company), Mr H. M. Hedley, colliery pro- prietor; Dr. David Howell Thomas, Mr T. P. R. Richards, shipowner; and Mr Wm. Williams, proprietors! of the Upper Forest and Worcester Steel Works. Messrs J. P. Jones and Margrave, who designed the fine premises of Messrs B. Evans and Company, will draw the plans of the new building, which is to cost £ 16,000, while £ 6,000 will be spent on elaborate furnishing. There can be no two opinions as to the desirability of increased hotel accommo- dation in Swansea, especially since the 1%1-ck- worth Arms has been bought by the Post Office authorities, and the present venture should prove eminently successful.

BRITANNIA. (HAURAKI) GOLD MINING COMPANY, LIMITED. Interest is being taken in the approaching issue of the prospectus of the Britannia (Hauraki) Gold Mining Company, Limited, with a capital of £ 100,000. The property acquired by the company is very favourably reported upon bv the well-known mining experts—W. H. Argall, R. A. Marshall, and George Steedman, and is situated in the same channel of gold-bearing country as the Hauraki, Kapanga, Tokatea, and other well-kuown mines in the Coromandel Goldfields, New Zealand. The Britannia was originally taken up by a small company of working men, and being worked on most), primitive lines, yielded from the outset 4%ozs. of, gold to the ton. ■——m NEW INDUSTRY FOR LLANELLY. The Llaneliy Tinplate Stamping Works, the operations of which, under the guidance of Mr Frank Randall, have proved so successful, is now about to add a branch of a fast advancing industry. On every hand there is evidence of the use and utility of enamelled goods, and the immense increase of this class of goods. Yet it is a fact that much of the black plates made in Wales is taken to Germany, and a high tariff paid thereon, then made into enamelled goods and brought back into this country and sold at astonishingly low prices. The proprietors of the Llaneliy Stamping Works are now preparing to go extensively into this business. All engaged in the tinplate trade will wish them success in their enterprise.

SCOTCH IRON TRADE. GLASGOW, Friday.—There has been a quiet business this week in the Scotoh iron trade, but the iron and steel works are now in full operation, and they have a prospect of full and constant employment. The pig iron market has been somewhat easier, and only a limited business done. Scotch warrants have sold from 46s 4d to 45s lid cash, and Cumberland hematite at 4&8 lId to 468 8%d. Very little has been done in Cleveland iron, the price being 37s cash, and no business whatever has taken place in Middles- brough hematite. Scotch hematite is quoted at 498 6d free on trucks at the steel works. The weekly output of hematite has been reduced by fully 1,000 tons, but the production of basic or ordinary pig iron has been increased to about a similar extent, the number of furnaces in blast being 75, the same as last week. Prices of Scotch makers' pig iron are steady, G.M.B. No. 1 is quoted 463 9d No. 3. 45s 6d Gartsherrie. 49s 6d and 47s 6d Coltuess, 52s and 47s 9d Glen- garnock, 49s 6d and 458 6d Eglinton, 47s and 45s. The shipments of pig iron are small. t TRAVELLING IN RUSSIA, UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCES. A gentleman who has just returned from Russia, where he had gone upon an invitation to witness the Coronation, had an unpleasant encounter with the Garde de la Frontiere." On arriving at the Frontier Station, Wirballen, about 5 p.m., he discovered that his passport was vised, in error, to remain in instead of to depart from Russia." He at once went to his hotel and telegraphed to St. Petersburg, calling attention to the mistake made by the Russian officials, and begging that it might be rectified. About ten p.m., while awaiting the reply, he left his hotel and strolled on the station embankment, where, much to his astonishment, he was suddenly and unceremoniously seized by a Russian soldier, who demanded all manner of explanations. He faded to make the soldier understand his positiou, and soon realised that he was a prisoner. His captor put Borne cartridges in his rifle and fired three "iines in the air. Immediately ten other soldiers appeared, and the visitor was formally put under arrest and, despitehis remonstrances, very roughly hustled to the barracks. There he was searched, and a mihtary official took his money and documents. He asked the soldiers to escort him to their officer, but they refused. After much persuasion, however, ha induced a corporal to carry a letter to the officer, who, he afterwards learned, was asleep. He wrote many appeals in French and German to persons whom he had formerly met, and by whom he hoped to he remembered, and also a tele- gram to the British Embassy, but they were apparently not despatched, and every request was resented as an annoyance. Finally he was ordered to a bed in the ordinary barracks room, where many soldiers were sleeping. The difficulties and annoyances of the position were crowding upon him. The heat in the room was oppressive, and he opened a window near his bed to avoid being stifled. But his motive was not understood. A sergeant rushed at him and struck him across the legs with his bayonet, thinking he meant to escape. There was nothing to do but put up with the stuffiness, and the night wore wearily awar. In the morninsr he was told be would see the officer at 9.m. At 9.30 he WttS at talrnn h", o nnmnrJ and an armed private to see the officer on duty, who happened still to be in bed. He was then sent on to the officer at the railway station, who also was resting from the rough fatigue of frontier duty. It is needless to follow our luckless countryman through all his peregrinations. How- ever, the telegram from Sb Petersburg had arrived, and hi-,troubles were coming to an end. His money, railway ticke,t and documents were returned to him, and he was allowed to continue his journey to London. If there is not one difficulty about a passport there is another, says the correspondent, and this and the general discomfort which travel- lers in Russia experience prevent people visiting the great Northern Empire.

A BRAVE SCHOOLBOY. On Thursday night Mr Arthur C. Langham, the deputy coroner, held an inquiry at the Cemetery Huusp, Edmonton, respecting the death of Walter Copping, aged 19 years, a labourer, at-ply residing at 8, Bounds-terrace, Edmonton. Harold Copping, a schoolboy, aged 15, staced that on Tuesday afternoon he and the deceased, who was his elder brother, were bathing with a number of other lads ab "Tumble Bay," in tho- New River. Deceased WAS swimming about when one of the other boys said to witness, Your brother's drowning." Witness immediately dived in and caught him by the head, but Walter struggled and witness had to let go. He how. ever dived again, but the deceased clutched his shoulders and dragged him under, and he had to get iwry to save himself. Witness then dived a third time, but Imcame too exhausted, and his brother sank. Witness then dressed and went for the police. The Coroner I.consider you showed exceptional bravery. The jury returned a verdict of Accidental death," and requested the Coroner to forward tho facts of the case to the Royal Humane Society.

QUACKS AND ADVERTISING. At a meeting of the Ethics Section of the British Medical Association at Carlisle yesterday a lively discussion took place on quacks and ad advertising. Dr. Kingsbury, of Blackpool, intro. duced personal grievances about doctors having their names in advertisements of hydropathic establishments, the ethics of which, he contended, had never been discussed by the association. The Section declined to bear him, and eventually the chairman declined to allow him to proceed. Dr. .Hardman (Blackpool) also spoke amid opposition.

SHOT BY A BURGLAR. EXCITING CHASE. Mr Rosenblum, a Manchester merchant, was shot in the shoulder yesterday by a burglar, who was found in the attic of his house. The police endeavoured to capture the man. but he entered an adjoining house and fired at the constable, the shot grazing the officer's cheek. The burglar then escaped, and is still at large. Mr Rosenblum's wound is said to be serious.

RETURN OF BARNEY BARNATO. POPULAR GREETING IN LONDON. Mr Barney Barnato arrived on the s.s. Scot at Southampton yesterday, where he was met by a number of influential City gentlemen, who sub. sequently accompanied him to London. Upon the arrival of the train in Waterloo Station a large crowd greeted the popular African millionaire, and he was loudly cheered as he drove out of the station. Mr and Mrs Barnato will remain ab Spencer House, Earl Spencer's rown residence, for a couple of months.

AERIAL NAVIGATION. PERILOUS ADVENTURE. We are for ever on the eve of discovering the science of navigating the air, and like the fractious sisters of Cinderella, who were always within a hair's breadth, more or less, of fitting the glass slipper, always about to fly with the swallows, but after every effort only cast back again to our original hopeless conviction of its im- possibility. But, liotliiDg daunted by repeated failures, every day brings forth fresh pretenders to possession of the secret. A man of the highest reputation in scieoce-Elisée Reclus-who professes belief in the efficacy of a season of anarchy throughout the civilised world to purge it from the vices and injustice heaped upon society by whole generations of corrupt and tyrannical rulers, and has been exiled from France in conse- quence of the indiscreet expressions ofbis opinions, has been induced to try his fortune in the balloon invented by Capazza, of Brussels. But. as if in defiance of the power of mau, the whole forces of jEolus have combined to defeat the audacious attempt to brave the superior power of nature. A phenomenon, seldom witnessed, but most dreadful of all to aeronauts, overtook the brave little expedition, venturing forth in the Camilla. In i-nid-air the currents suddenly rose from all points of the compass at once, and completely set at nought the boasted skill of the navigators to move the obstinate monster, none the less obstinate from being inanimate, from its tanta- lising immobility just above the good gossip- ing city of Brussels, where it remained motionless, as if listening with malicious satisfaction to ali the tattle of the people below concerning the reason of this strange immobility. Fortunately, after awhile, by the time the whole city had gathsred beneath the resting-place of the sullen machine, the gazers remaining open-mouthed with that half-satisfaction usual with the multitudes who watch the issue of the combat between the good and evil chances to which a human being may be exposed, the breezes were induced to blow all one way, and for a wonder this was the right one and so away sailed the balloon majestically, only, however, to be caught again in a tree iu the forest of Soigntes, there to be sub. mitted to the visits of the gohcmouchcs of the neighbourhood, filled with uncouth merriment at the perilous predicament of the savans. By dint of tying several ladders together the poor savans, rich in naught but science, were rescued and brought to earth, torn, ragged, bruised, and wind-beaten, amid the laughter of the clodhoppers, who never would have been foolish enough to risk such perilous adventure. Not they f The adven- ture, however, has drawn attention to the scheme for guidance of balloons invented by Mr Kyate, the American engineer, some few years ago, and which has been essayed in America with that dcini succes which in Europe commands many succeeding trals, but in the New World IS set aside until the many others which have been long waiting experiments have had their turn for competition, It is this strange policy on the part of the Americans which has so often caused them to be accused, like the Chinese, of pretending to the invention of what has been frequently tried in Europe during the last century.-Birmingham Post.

Llandudno will have to face a heavy deficit, rThat much at least is now positively certain, and the Llandudno folks, however great the sympathy that may be expressed with them in their dilemma, had better make up their minds that they, and they alone, will have to wipe off that deficit. To defer that unpleasant task in the hope that public sympathy will take the form of financial assistance would be a sad waste of time. The agony would be only unnecessarily prolonged. The experience of the Pontypridd Committee, with a deficit nearly five times as great, is a case in point. They were left completely in the lurch by the ardent Eisteddfodwyr of Wales, for not a penny was contributed outside the guarantors to help them out of the mire. But Llandudno is great on innovations," and surely in this category must be included the very latest suggestion that the National Eistedd- fod Association should be asked to come to the rescue The association would have claimed and secured a moiety of whatever sur. plus that might have accrued, and it may be argued with some semblance of logic that it should accordingly find the wherewithal to pay off half the deficiency. But the association will not see things in the same light, and rightly so, for it-is allowed no real share in the management of these national gatherings. It contributes generously to the prizes offered at the National Eisteddfodau, and undertakes to publish the successful compositions, and these are the con- siderations in virtue of which it is voted half the surplus whenever such surplus is earned. So far the association has had much the worst part of the bargain. The losses thus sustained at Pontypridd and Llandudno, and possibly at Llanelly-for Llaneliy has published no balance- 1 .L_- .£\Cf\ sheet, and it is now rumourea tnac iney were ÑiJV to the bad should undoubtedly hasten the day for a radical reform in the management of the national festival. As at present too much is left in the hands of !ocal committees. and the system whereby each locality is put to the euornious expense of erecting a huge pavilion for a four ¡days' gathering is absurd. There should be some kind of Central Committee composed of men well-experienced in Eisteddfodic management, and A movable pavilion must be secured. Reforms in many other directions are badly'needed, and WatcyujWyn has set ihe ball of discussion a-rolling in a singularly interesting article which he contributes to the August number of Y Diwygiv-r. Watcyn NVyu has come to the conclusion that the real friends of the Eisteddfod are very few indeed, and the Eisteddfod itself is in danger ot being sung out of existence. It is evident." he writes, that we must change the singing—change its characteristics it we are to keep the Eisteddfod alive. If Englishmen are to come to Wales to adjudicate upon the singing, then Welsh singing must be entirely .changed—its Welsh fire must be extinguished, its enthusiasm left behind, and all must be made anew. This was more apparent than ever this year, and the choirs have felt it, and we shall feel the reaction. It is not the singing that we have been used to and have been boasting of that will suit the English adjudicators, and it is from this that Eiateddfodic reform will arise, and possibly this will be a blessing to us." It is not in the Diwygiwr alone that this subject is discussed. The Welsh papers are opening their columns to a general symposium on this question, and it may be that we are now at the dawn of a new era in the history of the old Cymric festival. WANTED, ARTISANS, NOT CLERKS. It may be that Imperial politics, literature, and song have been given too much attention to in Wales to the exclusion of more practical topics that have a closer bearing upon the temporal well-being of its people. At any rate social and industrial questions have come very much to the front of recent years, and the bread-ard-biitter politicians are a growing force. The Herald Gymratg is rapidly establishing for itself a reputa- tion as- the special organ of that portion of the Welsh community that prefers the economic and practical to the merely sentimental and philo- sophical questions of life. Last week the Herald showed how enormously Wales could be benefited by the utilisation for manufacturing purposes of the power that runs to waste in its mountain screams and rushing rivers, while in its current issue the editorial column is occupied by a thoughtful leader on Lord Rose- bery's speeob on the decline of British commerce, aud the alarming inroads into the preserves of British trade by German competitors, a result which the ex-Premier attributed to the better equipment of the German in the matter of technical education. While in full agreement with Lord Kosobery as to the need of better technical instruction for the artisan classes of this country, the Herald makes the startling state- ment that his Lordship betrayed a want of acquaintance with the principles of Free Trade, that his speech at Epsom smelt of the heresy of the Tax and Tariff party, and that he must subject his opinions to a process of disinfection if he desires to maintain his position as the leader of the Liberal party. One looks in vain, however, for a specific instance in the Herald of Lord Rosebery's alleged heterodoxy. Germany, it declares, does not despise a classical tuition. "To the contrary, there is no country under the sun where classical education is held in greater esteem; but all will admit that it is a ridiculous thing to turn out clerks in their hundreds of thousands, and leave the artisans with only just enough education to enable them to read and write." Germany is not accused of pursuing this absurd policy, but, by inference, Wales is. The Herald, however, is full of hope that the intermediate schools in the Principality will ore long bring about a better state of affairs, but it sadly deplores the lack of support given to these schools by the moneyed classes in Wales. The Herald is doing excellent work in ventilating topics such as these, and its concluding sentence, that the age demands skilled workmen and not clerks, and that the example of Germany should act as a stimulus rather than as a brake, will be very heartily endorsed. I THE CELT" AND THE BAPTISTS. One might be forgiven for imagining, after reading a few recent issues of the Celt, that the principal object for the existence of that journal is to attack and to belittle the Baptist denomina- tion in Wales, so frequent and bitter are the onslaughts made in its columns upon the churches and the members of that religious body. War between the parties may be assumed to have been formally declared by the Gelt a few weeks since, when the suggestion was made by a Baptist minister, from Neath,l in the:Scren,:that the late Rev. Dr. Rees, of Swansea, the Con- gregationalist author of the history of Welsh Nonconformity, had once upon a time sought and been rpfused membership in a Welsh Baptist Church. The Celt apparently has taken mortal offence at this, aud neglects no opportunity for retaliation. Hitherto, however, the combat has been a very one-sided affair, for sirange to say the shot and shell hurled by the artillery of the Celt into the Baptist camp do not appear to have excited the least commotion. To the contrary, they are regarded with supreme indifference. At any rate, so far as we have observed, they have been allowed to pass absolutely unnoticed. This week the Baptists are assailed with a statement attributed to Dr Whitsitt, professor of Church History at the Louisville (Baptist) Theological University, that there is not a single bona fide instance on record of the baptism of a believer from the year 1500 to the year 1641 and further that the records of Crowle Church, Lincolnshire, which seemed to furnish proofs to the- contrary, are so many pious frauds." The Celt is in high glee at this, so much so that the editor, though an experienced controversialist, so far forgets him- self as to drop the editorial we and to declare "I have on many previous occasions suggested that there has been much deliberate suppression in the history of the denomination in England." The Baptists," it continues, "cannot afford to ignore this teacher from among their own ranks. Doubtless the readers of the Seven, one and all, will be expecting a word from Llandudno, for Spinther James is the best-known Baptist histbrian in Wales. We shall carefully watch the course of this controversy. Nothing but good can emanate from it. They will not listen to any- thing said by the sprinklers (Ta^nellywyr)—they regard them as enemies. But they must pay heed to what is said by their own scholarly leaders." Here, then, is thE, commencement of a pretty quarrel. NONCONFORMIST PROGRESS. Welsh Congregationalists bad sufficient cause for self-congratulation in the remarkable success of the Union meetings at Bridgend. They are now afforded further gratification by the wide- spread attention given to those meetings throughout Wales. A greater compliment to the power and the influence of their Union could scarcely be paid than the fact that nearly all the Welsh papers nob only devote many columns to record its proceedings but that they also, in their editorials, speak of the Union gatherings as affording ample indications of the vitality of the denomination and gratifying proofs that Noncon- formityin Walesismakinglsubstantial progress. The unanimous verdicb appears to be that the Bridg. end gathering far excelled all its predecessors, while the timely and vigorous address of the president is spoken of in eulogistic terms on all hands. We dealt last week with the advance made at the Congregational Union in the direc- tion of Nonconformist co-operation. Methodists and Congregationalists thereby became pledged to support the new Welsh Nonconformist League, and now we find that the Baptists, at their Union meetings at Pontypridd this week, formally resolved to participate in the movement. The Wesleyans have not so far had an oppor- tunity of discussing the question, but there is no reason to believe that they will be willing to stand aloof from a movement which has for its chief object the protection of Protestantism from the insidious attacks of the Ritualists, whether Roman or Anglican. According to the Baner the new league will prove a tower of strength in the stormy period that is yet to come when the Education Bill will be reintroduced. "One of the first duties of the new League," it adds, will be to arrange a consultation with the Welsh members so as to secure a thorough under. standing between Parliament and the country on this question, and to give the Welsh members the opportnnitv of learning what in reality is the opinion of Nonconformist Wales on this matter." The Bridgend meeting," adds the Baner, mark a new era in the history of Congrega- tionalism and Nonconformity in Wales and the other denominations cannot but rejoice with the Congregationalists at this fact." Sach a Union among the Welsh Non- conformists, declares the Cymro, is not onlv desirable, butabsolutely essential, if the comin^ attaolu of "Ritualism, Priestcraft, and Paean- iam^-we to be successfully m^ The Tc^ian warmly supports the idea, and points out bow valuable such joint action proved during the recent educational crisis. "Mr Tom Ellis was perfectly right," it adds, "when he said that the Nonconformist denominations in Wales, notwithstanding a little Sectarian jealousy, are nearer each other and better able to co-operate than are the various sections within the.Estab. lished Church. It is of importance that 1Nonconformists should join hands, not only against iniquity, but also against the Papistry of the Church of Rome and the Papistry of the Church of England." The Seren (B.), though writing before the decision of the Baptist Union was made known. strongly emphasises the need of such a League. "If," it declares, "we have any respect for our Nonconformity and the traditions of our fathers, if we are bent upon preventing the clerical parties from undoing the work of the Reformation, we must sink our differences and stand as one man for those principles that are dear to our hearts-we must fight under the same banner for the safety of our common interests." The Ltctn, of course, affects to sneer at the whole business, albeit that in is previous issue it pleaded sancti- moniously for a re-union. According to the Llan, the League is to be founded, not because of any real desire among the sects" for a. Union," but because the sects are afraid to face the Church in single battalions

I The annuni distribution ot prizes in connectk with the Usk Grammar School (Roger Edwards's Charity) took place on Friday, General Gillespie performing the function. The Head Master (Mr J. H. Priestley, B.A.) reported that the school was in a flourishing condition. Forty boys had been in attendance during the term, and they had entered with energy into their work.—The report of the Examiner (Mr G. H. Wells, M.A., of the Merchant Taylors'School, E.C.) stated that he was struck with the thoroughness of the school work generally. The work showed that there had been careful teaching and a corresponding appli- cation. He found that there was good work going on in the school, and be congratulated the governors on its efficiency and its increased numbers. NEWPORT MAN'S MARITAL EXPERIENCES. Mrs Mary Aun Davies told the magistrates at the Newport Borough Police Court yesterday that when her husband, David Davies, one of Coun- cillor Blackburn's employees,' c.-inie home to dinner on Tuesday last she had an argument with him, and she called him anything but a truthful man, and he knocked her down, bruising her nose, and kicked her whilst on the ground. The husband's side of the story was that when he returned home no dinner had been prepared for him, and that his wife, who was drunk, threw a saltcellar at him, cutting his head open. His wife was frequently under the influence of drink, and he produced a handful of pawn tickets to confirm his allegation that she pawned the household goods. He had been married three years, and it had been three years of transportation to him. Councillor Blackburn gave the husband an excellent char- acter, and told the Court that on Tuesday he returned to his work wounded and bleeding. The house was in a very dirty state, and the neigh- bours in answer to his inquiries spoke of defend- ant as a quiet, steady man, and declared that the wife was to blame for their unhappiness. The Bench bound defendant over to keep the peace, and Davies assented to being under an obligation to the Queen, but declared he would rather run the country than live with his wife again.

CYCLING ACCIDENTS. BROTHERS LINTON THROWN. Yesterday an accident, happily unattended by serious injury, hefel Tom and Sam Linton, the well-known Aberdare cyclists. The brothere had been to Hirwain from Aberaman for a spin, and were returning home, when they were thrown from their machines. Both were badly shaken, but luckily escaped injury. A CARDIFF CYCLIST'S BAD FALL. A serious cycling accident befel a young gentle- man named Wilfred Samuel, of Cardiff, at Worle, near Weston-super-Mare, on Thursday afternoon. The bicycle ran down a hill at a rapid rate and dashed into a wall. A woman Jiving near heard the noise, and, running out, saw the cyclist lying unconscious with the damaged machine on top 01 him. Samuel, suffering from concussion of the brain and other injuries, was removed to Weston-super-Mare Hospital in an unconscioua state. He had been staying with his parents in Weston.

Lewis) at Cardiff Police Court yesterday with violently assaulting and wounding Margaret Smith, a lodger, on July I lith.
