SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE (Account Day, June 26th.) SATURDAY, June 13th, 1896. The demand for Barry Stocks has again been the feature of a dull day. The Deferred ) Ordinary was done at the record figure of ) 157, and the quotation is marked up 2, to 157. Debentures, and for London and Midland and Lloyds Banks, but no dealings resulted. The only other transac- tion in locals was a deal in Hancock's Deferred Ordinary at 2D fa, same as last price. The annual report of the Ebbw Vale Steel, Iron and Coal Company, Limited, will be found below. It's unsatisfactory character has been anticipated by recent declines in the value of the shares. Business in the Mining Market was con- 5tied to dealings in Virginia Transvaal Shares at 2s, and Chaffers at 8s 10d. The report of the directors of the Ebbw Vale Steel, Iron. and Coal Co. (Ltd.) for the, fear ending March 31st, 1896, is as follows The directors submit herewith the balance- sheet and profit and loss account for the year ending March 31st, 1896 :— The amount brought forward from last year's profit and loss account is.- £ 27,419 7 1 The gross profit for the year ending 3bt March last amounted to 35,191 1 5 £ 62,610 8 6 From which has to bit deducted— Kxpenses of head office and legal expenses £ 7,611 14 1 Interest on debentures and fully paid-up shares 22,546 12 10 —————— 30,158 611 EU,462 1 7 Low written off for depreciation of property 22.028 11 0 Leaving a balance of £ 10,423 10 7 Tour directors much regret-that they are unable to present a more favourable abatement or to recommend the payment of a dividend, but the causes are entirely beyond their control. The shareholders are no donbt aware that throughout the entire year the coal trade baa been greatly depressed, and in consequence prices have ruled lower than for many years past whilst in the iron and steel industries, during the first six months of the year, the demand was exceedingly small and prices abnormally low. Since then there has been a very. decided revival in the iron trade, with a consequent improvement in the selling prices. The board have continued to economise cost of production, and to carry out some of the much needed alterations and improvements in the iron and steel plant, and new branches of business have been commenced with satisfactory results. The collieries have done better than was anticipated at the commencement of the year, having, under the circumstances, made a fair profit, but the present position is most unsatis- factory, and the outlook most discouraging. The board have, after much deliberation, decided to increase the output of the Waun Lwyd Colliery by sinking to the lower seams, and the work has already been commenced. The com- pletion of this scheme will enable the company to work a larger proportion of its freehold coal. The fixing of the powerful permanent pumpiug plant at your New Marine Collieries at Graig Fawr has been completed, with the result that there is a great advantage in the working of the pits, and the cost is appreciably reduced. The out. put at thase pits has now reached 10,000 tons per week, and is increasing. The coal is of excellent quality. The plant and machinery throughout the concern have, as far as possible, been main- tained in efficient working condition, the cost of which has been charged to revenue. The valua- tion of the stocks of finished and unfinished materials on hand have as usual been personally verified by the Works Committee of the board and certified by them as correct. The directors have pleasure in stating that Sir William Bailey, managing director of W. H. Bailey and Co., Limited, of Salford, also a director of the Manchester Ship Oanal, has consented to join the board, and that they have elected him, subject to confirmation at the annual meeting, to the vacant seat occasioned by Mr Coward's retire- meat. The two directors who retire by rotation are Mr Charles Allen and Mr Samuel M. Johnson, each of whom is eligible for re-election. The auditors (Messrs Edwin Collier, Tongue and Co., of Manchester) offer themselves for re- electiou. Mid-Wales Mines, Limited, was registered at Edinburgh on June 9tb, with a capital of £15 000, in 5 000 Preference and 10,000 Ordinary Shares of 21 each, to purchase, take on lease, or otherwise acquire any mines, mining rights, and metalliferous ground in the county of Cardigan or else- where, and to explore, work, develope, and turn to account the same. All the sub- scribers reside in Scotland.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.I
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. I LONDON, Saturday. There is nothing new as regards money. An abundant supply is available, and there is very little demand either as regards loans or discounts. Day-to-day money was to per cent., and short fixtures were per sent. Discounts were quiet, with bills in short supply. For three months' Bank bills ¡ the quotation has been weak at ii per cent., I' tour months' H, and six .months' per aent. Trade bills—three months', 1 four months', 1 six months', 1% per cent. There was the usual thin attendance on the Stock Exchange to-day, and business in all departments was on a limited scale. With nothing of interest affecting the markets the changes were slight, but the general tone was good. Mines were steady and frequently better. The improvement in American Rail- ways has made further progress, and all speculative issues exhibit fractional gains. Randt Reefs.—The South African Mining Market was again inactive, and several shares were quoted at higher prices after having lain idle for a long time. Amongst those in the cheap list which ought to have a further rise are Randt Reefs. These shares last year were a strong market during the boom." They only failed to go to a much higher price because of the unforeseen trouble in the Transvaal. Now that things have settled down, a purchase of them whilst quoted at about 10s each should turn out profitably. Considering their possibilities, they are a good speculation.-Sporting Life, June 11th. 2399 The Achilles Gold Fields Company, Limited, New Zealand. -According to the latest cabled report from the managing director, the May crushing at this com- pany's mines has yielded 760 ozs. of gold from 750 tons of ore, thus maintaining, as was anticipated, the average of over 1 oz. per ton. There is every reason for this average being kept up, as developments are now being actively carried on in the deep ground, where it is expected that the three great lodes of ore will meet, forming one grand gold reef. The present price of the company's shares is 3s 6d per fully-paid share, which is very low, regard being had to the improving position of the property. The first batch of letters of allotment and I regret in the new Cycle Company, Limited, has been posted. In our advertisement columns will be found a full proopectus of the Rover Cycle Company, which has been formed to acquire as a going concern the whole of the mate- rials and assets of J. K. Starley and Co., Limited, heretofore carried on as a private company at Meteor Works, Coventry, and to further develop and extend the business carried on at these works and at the depots at 5, Holborn- viaduct, and 157, New Bond-street, London. The business is very rapidly increasing in consequence of the big demand for Rover Cycles. The valuable services of Mr J. K. Starley have been secured as managing director for a term of five years. The secretary is Mr Harry Smith, and the registered offices are at Meteor Works, Coventry. The subscription list will open on Tuesday, 16th June, and close on or before Wednesday, 17th June, at 4 p.m. I A report of the 60th annual general meet- ing of the Northern Assurance Company, LicniteOf will be found in oQr ftdvortigoiutot columns, with a summary of the directors' report which, being of a favourable character, was unanimously adopted the sum of £50,000 being added to the fire reserve fund, making the same up to a total of a million. The general manager is Mr H. E. Wilson, and the secretary Mr Alfred A. Tavener, the offices being at 1, Union-terrace, Aberdeen, and 1, Moorgate-street, London. It may be .observed en passant that the total accumu- lated funds of the company now amount to no less than £ 4,671,000.

LONDON MINING MARKET, -
LONDON MINING MARKET, LONDON. Saturday Night. Dalziel's Agency says Business in the Mining M,-rket", hits been quiet all day as a rule, but here and there iu certain specialities there has been some good buying, so that on balance prices are distinctly better. Jagersfontein have again advanced A, to 12% to 12%, and this carried De Beers up fa, to 3%, while Leicester Diamonds have again been in demand. In Rand hares the changes are juwdy. opwroL- but only to a small extent, and some- what nominal at that. City and Suburban Angelo, Henry Nonrse.'Knights, Jumpers, Heriot, Durban Roodepoort, and Goldfields Deep are better; but Rose Deep and a few more are quoted fractionally lower. Lisbon Berlyn are a third lower, but the market is good and is more likely to recover than to go lower. Chartereds keep at 4 to 4%, and Mashonaland Agenoy are rather easier; while Goldfields of Lydenburg mark a rise of Barnato Banks, Consols, and Johnnies are slightly easier, but this appears to be due to the absence of business. In West Australians there is little change to note. Brown Hill and Hampton Plains Estate are both easier. Indians and New Zealands are both steady, but without any noticeable obange, except in Kathleens, which have been freely bought. Coppers are again good, Anacondas and Rio Tintos both improvmg to 7% and 34 respectively.
