SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE MONDAY, Feb. 25th. 1895. Little business was transacted in the local Stock and Share Market to-day. Perhaps the chief feature was the disposition to sell railways all round, owing no doubt to the Bncertainty as to the result of negotiations between the coalowners and their work- men with respect to the formation of a new Sliding-scale agreement. Up to the present there is a deadlock on the subject of the percentage that should be paid the work- men, and should no satisfactory agreement be arrived at before the end of March the sxisting scale will lapse, and, judging from the general dissatisfaction among the work- men, there is a probability of dispute. Should this happen and a strike ensue, as a matter of course railways will suffer to a consider- able extent, and for the time being securi- ties depreciate in value. There were, how- ever, few buyers in the market. Barry Ordinary Stock changed hands at 240% Barry Deferred Ordinary, at 122 and Barry 3 per Cent. Debentures, at 105%. In their report for the second half of last year the directors of the Milford Docks I Company state that the marked improve- ment in the company's local trade which was Been in the early part of the past half-year was interrupted by the continuance of Storms of unusual severity throughout the latter portion of the period embraced in the accounts herewith, and resulted in a cor- responding diminution of receipts from the fishing traffic. Since the accounts were slosed a revival has taken place, and the directors, while confidently looking for renewed activity in that direction, trust that additional business may result from the coal mines in close proximity to Milford Haven, I which it is now contemplated to open up." The first batch of letters of allotment and regret for the Share and Debenture Stock in the Ben Evans and Company, Limited, has been posted.

GHASTLY DRAMA IN REAL LIFE.
GHASTLY DRAMA IN REAL LIFE. The Wilna papers report a shocking drama enacted in that city a few days ago. A man who, as a youth, had emigrated to the United States many years ago, and there amasssd a considerable fortune, returned a fortmght back. His appearance was so much changed that his old neighbours, with one exception, failed to recognisa their youthful acquaintance. The exception was an old friend of the family, who was leaving Wilna on a short absence by a departing train just as the young man alighted. Finding himself unrecognised, the young man spent a few days loitering about his old haunts and picking up information of his father and sister, the latter a, very pretty girl whom her brother had left as a mere child. One evening: he went to his father's house during the latter's absence. His sister was greatly attracted by the strange guest who bad so many interesting experiences to relate, and they supped together. The brother, feigning fatigue, begged to be allowed to remain over night, as he had some- thing of importance to say to the girl's father In the morning. The sister, though somewhat sur- prised at the request, consented, and prepared his sleeping apartment. On her father's late return the girl informed him of their unexpected .quest, and dilated, unfortunately, on the stranger's wealth. The old man's cupidity was aroused, and during the night he stole into the guest's bedroom and murdered him in his sleep with an axe. During the next day the old neigh- bour, now returned, who had recogniseds the young man at the railway station, came with a number of friends to hear news of their emigrant relative in thfi States. Where is your son ?" he inquired of the murderer. Whose son ?" asked the latter, with blanching face. Your own boy," said the neighbour, who returned some days ago and has made a fortune. Did he not sleep here last night?" Suddenly the whole horrible truth flashed upon the unhappy father, who rushed off to the scullery where his son's body was hidden. He is now in prison, but it is said his reason is shaken.
AMUSING SCENE IN BIRMINGHAM.
AMUSING SCENE IN BIRMINGHAM. A very amusing incident occurred in New street, Birmingham, on Saturday nighb outside the Theatre Hoyal, and which found diversion for a crowd of a«!veral hundred p&ople. A policeUlan had noticed that the driver pf a 'bus plying bes- twoen Fivei Ways and the city was unable to properly contro! the horses hewas driving and so stopped the conveyance, and triad to persuade thti driver to coma off the box. But insfcaad of doin, so tho jehu took off his hat and commenced j haranguing the huge crowd of people which had ooon collected. Loud roars of laughter followed ewh gooticulation of the drunken man, who would not leave his swat. Two policemen then monniod the 'bus, but thtrir ufforks failed to dis- lodge him. The assistance of two more officers was obtained, but thoy were unsuccessful. However, the driver was unable to resist the exer- tions of five constables, who earned their drunktn charge, head first, off the 'bus to the police-station, amidst the jeers and laughter of the bystanders.

HEATH & SONS, CARDIFF, pONTYPRIDD, AND ..sL LONDON, •jp I>A-NO FORTE AND ORGAN -&- jMPrchants' '(FROM SOUTH WATJES DAILY NEWS, 9TH JANUARY, 1894.) VERDICT OF NINE HUNDRED.' —Under this title Messrs R. J. Heath and Sons, Queen-street, Cardiff, Eianoforte makers, organ builders, and music ware- ousemen, have collected an imposing array of testi- monials and Press opinions relating to the quality of the musical instruments supplied by them. The tirm is so well known in Cardiff, and, indeed, throughout Sou h Wales and the West of England, that it is hardly necessary here to dwell upon its influence and commanding position. This collection of testimoaials serves, however, to do something more than certify to the excellence of the instruments furnished by Messrs Heath and Sons. It shows, in a sense, how steady is the growth among the general public of a desire for a knowledge of music, and how increasingly numerous, even in the homes ot the working classes, are pianos, organs, and harmoniums. The great majority of the letters in this list relate to pianos, and while many of them have reference to most costly instruments containing all the latest improvements, supplied to the well-to-do, the greater number relate to serviceable instruments purchased for the homes of the wage-earning portion of the community. This growing love for so refining an art as music is a most favourable sign. For though in the Principality music has for generations been the chief recreation of the people, it has for the most part been choral music in connection with churches and chapels that has occu pied attention. Instrumental music is now, however, receiving ns fair share of attention, and all, those ill true sympathy with the art must trust that the move- ment will go steadily onward. These testimonials have been received from every quarter of the Princi- pality, while not a few come from other portions of the United Kingdom, and some fuom South America.India, and other distant countries. All speak most favour. ably of Messrs Heath's business methods as well as of their instruments. R. J. IIEATH & SONS INVITE INSPECTION.
