This Company has been formed for the purpose of making aluminium in this country by the electrical process now w successfully carried 011 by the SocitHe Anonyme pour l'lndustrie de l'AluminiuUl de Neu- I hausen (Aluminium Industrie Aetien-Ge»ellscliaft), in Switzerland, and ùy the societe Electro Mctalluigique Fratigaiso at Froaes (hère, France), and of carrying on the manufacture of aluminium and its I alloys. This metal, from its peculiar lichtness and great "trel1h, hag bèn found remarkably suit- able 101' many purposes før which copper, brass, guu- mefal, and steel are used, and replaces theni with advantage it. is extensively used for alloys, especially in the well-known aluminium bronze.and also in metal- lurgical and foundry operations. The demand for this meial is daily growing with great rapidity. The Company will aCllire on very reasonable terms a troug combination (If the necessary clements fùr the clleap production of aluminium, which includes mines, patents, water power, etc. These arrangements have baen Rubmit, tell to Lord Kelvin, who has advised the directors that ill his opinion they" are well adapted to secure commercial success for the undertaking." His report is published in the full prospectus. After an exhaustive search by Messrs Newton and Sons, tlie Patents acquired by this Company, and the Sons, the Patents acquired by this Company, and the other Patents bearing on t1ú¡; subject, liavo been sub- mitted to Mr J. Fletcher Moulton, Q.C., M.P., who is of opinion that this Company will control the manu- facture of aluminium und aluminium bronzo by elec- tricity in the United Kingdom. By the contract entered into with the Society de Nel1hausen, wbo aro at the prereut time the largest, and most successful producers of aluminium in the worM, this Company will ecurc in adùitioll to their patents the advantage of their great experienco ill designing and starting the works, a.nd the benefit of all their improvements lip to date. Having regard to the fact that this Company will have larger output, will be in several ways able to work at less cost, and will hold its patents free of royalties, the directors deel fully justified in estimating that, on the completion of tho works, the profits of manufacture will not be less than £ 40,000 per annnm. The beholder, who is looking down through the window of the Kinetoscope Cabinet, see,, the interior of a barber's shop. A man is reclining upon a barber's chair, about to be shaved. The barber goes to his case, secures his cup, makes a lather, and with this proceeds to lather the man's face. Meanwhile a coloured gentleman, who is probably acting iu the capacity of porter, boot- black, and "general utility," is moving about the room. He picks up a paper and sits down to read it. Another customer comes in, puils off hat and crat, takes a cigar from his vest pocket, lights it. picks up a- paper, and sits down to smoke, read, and await his turn. The coloured gentleman aforesaid finds something very funny in the newspaper he is reading, and thereupon ho crosses the room and points out the amusing article to the waiting cn<;tomer. They both laugh, o.nd show every sign of n,mUC¡!;ellt.. Meanwhile the barber has been Rhaving his man, and both the shaver" and the shavce" have been going through many-motions, the one plainly evincing his desire to hurry through the work of shaving and be ready for the iteyt the other as plainly showing the results of this immoderatebasLe en tho part of his executioner" by sundry grimaces and winces when the razor lakes off sections of his cuticle. On the wall is seen the appropriate sign," With or Without Chloroform," which is readily understood after witnessing the torture of the man in the barker's chair. No,y, it should be under- stood that this is not an imaginary scene, emanating from the pencil or brush of some artist; but an ACCURATE PHOTOGRAPH QUICKENED INTO LIFE OF A SCENE THAT HAS ACTUALLY OCCURRED. Every movement, from the walking of the man across the floor to the sweep of the razor, and even the very blink of an eyelash (so marvellously distinct, and true to nature is the reproduction) is recorded, and is witnessed by the beholder through the winnow 0f the ;kinetoscope. Even the smoke of the cigar which the iiitii is smoking is blown 1 across tho face of the sceno. and slowly disperses in the air-a most remarkable evidence of the fidelity of kinctoscopic reproductions^ ON OCTOBER 14TH LAST, THE "MANCHESTER GUARDIAN" said in a l,e:1Pill Article on THE EDISON KINETOSCOPE, ii Mr Edison, who has accomplished niiny marvels, is nob content to rest upon his laurels, but is developing new and startling inventions. One of these, the kinetoscope,' is intended to reproduce motion as the phonograph reproduces sound, though not in the same manner. The basis of the kinetoscope is photography. If, for example, Mr Edison desires to show us a, moving picture of a. man taking off his coat, the data of the actual sceno are first recorded by the camera at the rate of forty-three successive photographs in each second. When these separate pictures of the changes of attitude that occur to a. man when Ulsembaa'ssmg 11:m-clf oflii -s outer covering are setiu motion at the same speed as that at which :they were taken they unite to form one com- plete picture, and the photographic figure fe seen to take off its coat with an absolute fidelity to nature. This will no doubt remind some readers of the zoetrope, the zoogy- roscope, and other scientific toys with even more aggravating designations. But practical applications will doubtless be found for Mr Edison's latest invention. We are told that the apparatus in which this reproduction takes plf1.ce is a cabinet about 4ft. high, 2ft. wide, and lft. 9in. deep. It contains the celluloid film band, the apparatus for recon- structing the disjointed views, and a small electric motor for driving the apparatus. The chief detail of the mechanism is a fiat, metal ring having a RIot in it, which makes about 2,000 revolutions per minute. The film passes vapidly over the ring, beneath which is a light. The sjjectator looks through a lens on to the film, and every action recorded on it passes under Siis view.' The marvels now told of the kinetoscope are in the green wood what may we expect in the dry ? Mr Edison now shows on a small sellic all the features of an original sr,a.ge production.' but by and by lie proposes to make a. partnership between the phonograph and the kinetoscope, and by enlarging the figures and throwing them on a, screen produce or reproduce a drama. What would the theatrical public give for such a reproduction, say, of Garrick ? Yet, the next century may possibly be able to have an accurate repetition of Irving's voice and gestures. How will the new machine affect the action and delivery of the orator who knows that nvery movement of voice and limb is being recorded for the admiration ov the amusement of posterityi The possibilities of the kinetoscope are great and multifarious." The PREMIUMS are so moderate that, at usual ages for Assurance, P,1,200 or £ 1,250 may ba secured from the first for the Y'eavly Payment which in most Offices would be charged (with Profits) for £ 1,000 only -equivalent to an immediate and certain Bonus of 20 to 25 per Cent. T'lie WHOLU SURPLUS goes to the Policyholders on a system at once safe and equitable—no Share going to those by whose early death there is a loss to the, Common Fund. The DISTINCTIVE SYSTEM of the Institution is specially suitable for Assurances effected for the par- pose of providing a Fund for payment of the DEATII DUTIES recently imposed. The Premiums, with light to par- ticipate in the Surplus, differ little fro.n the non-profit rates of other Offices nevertheless, as the result of persistent economy and prudent management, the Bonus additions under Policies becoming claims have averaged for many years 50por Cent. on the Assurances which participated.
