SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE MONDAY, April 2nd, 1894. Things to-day have been particularly uiet, and while business has been limited comparatively little fresh inquiry in any given direction has manifested itself. The markets may be regarded as quiet all round. A certain amount of anxiety to acquire Rhondda and Swansea Bay Preferences has shown itself, and they are consequently more difficult to obtain, while the price has Advanced slightly. In other directions there is hardly any feature of interest to dwell upon. The following business has been done by the brokers who are non-members of the local Stock Exchange Denver Brewery Preferences, 7%. Rhondda and Swansea Bay Preference, 3s 9d premium. Rhymney Iron New Shares, 13s 7%d, 13s tOd, 13" 7%d. Taff Vale Ordinary, 81. Goldfields of South Africa, 2ft- Oceanas, 2%. Hancock's Ordinary (small lot), 15%. New Chenies, 1^. Worcesters, 2 xd. On the Cardiff Stock Exchange the follow- ing business has been transacted :— Rbymney Iron New Shares, 13s 7%d, 13s lOd. Taff Vale Ordinary, 81. Hancock's Preference Shares, 12ft. There we new buyers of the undermen- tioned :—Cambrian No. 1 Preference Stock London and Provincial Bank Shares Bute Dry Dock Shares, at 58% Brecon and Merthyr 1864 Preference Stock Brecon and Merthyr Ordinary Cardiff Gas Stock. Fall.-Grep.t Western Railway Stock to 161%—162% London and North- western Ordinary to 167—168 Midland Ordinary to 154-155. The first annual report of the directors of W. E. Vaughan and Co., Limited, has just been issued. It reads as follows :-The directors beg to hand the shareholders the balance-sheet for the year ending 31st December, 1893, and have pleasure in announcing that the accounts, after making provision !for all out-goings and after having paid the interim dividend of 6 per cent. on the Preference Shares and 5 per cent. on the Ordinary Shares, show an available balance of 1574 12s 5d, enabling them to recommend the like dividends for the last six months, and to carry forward 9221 6s 5d to next year's account. The retiring directors arc Messrs P. W. Carey and J. S. Chubb, who are eligible and offer themselves for re-election. In their South Wales Investment Circular or the month of April, Messrs E. T. Lyddon Mid Co., referring to the rumours that have lately been circulated with reference to Rhymney Stock, remarks Rhymney Stock was recently bought on vague mmonrs as to the directors contemplating the splitting of the Ordinary capital, as is proposed to be done by the Barry Railway; but we believe there is no authority whatever for the rumour, She present being; a most inopportune time for such a change. Parliamentary power was sought some time since to split the stock, but, owing to a condition that the dividend should be limited to the rate then paid, being imposed, the Bill was withdrawn. Rumours have been afloat that the local coal carrying companies have been considering the question of raising rat&' which, it will be remembered, were put down by the former Taff Vale directors, but, while this step would naturally increase the dividends of all, it is very doubtful if the Barry directors will agree to any change so long as their present rate of dividend can be maintained with the existing charges. The coal shipments of the port last week were very satisfactory considering how much they must have been influenced by the holiday season. At Penarth Dock the total shipments were 58,083 tons, while at Barry Dock the quantity exported was 31.228 tons. Messrs Charles Massy and Co. and Messrs Ernest Sully and Co. have issued Aeir stock and share lists for the month of A.pril. Both contain very full and complete information with the latest particulars obtainable as to the traffic returns of local railways.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Monday. The next few days will witness a good oi movement ia DA49N. FortigA coupons and miscellaneous dividends are already being paid, and the interest on the Funds will be distributed towards the end of the week, but against these some heavy repayments have to be made to the Bank of England. For short loans the charge to-day has been 1% per cent. Discount business was quiet, three months' Bank bills being taken at 1% per cent. Paris Cheque Exchange is 25-18% Berlin Cheque, 20'42%. Stock Exchange business was quiet, specu- lative buying having been checked, but the markets have continued to be characterised by firmness, and with a good undertone. The majority of changes were favourable. It will only require a moderate number of buying orders to bring about a development Df the buoyant tone, confidence in the future of the markets having been accentuated by the favourable returns of the past quarter. Consols rose and closed at 99% for delivery, and 99H to 99for the account 2% per Cent. (Chiklers'), 101% to 102 2% per Cent., 98 J4 to 98% Local Loans Stock, 104% to 105%.
