SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE THURSDAY, March 29th, 1894. In the general appearance of affairs at the Docks there is now but little effect of the holiday season left. Following closely, how- ever, upon the stoppage consequent upon Easter came the settlement, and this has oatuially caused attention to be chiefly engaged indoors, so that the number if transactions is still below the iverage. Fresh features in any of the more important securities are not numerous, and in the ordinary course of avents it may be taken that some little time will elapse before rails come into that pro- minence which they occupied a few weeks back. A certain amount of negotiation has aken place in Rhymney Ordinary at 192%, ind there are further sellers at the same price, while in Barry Ordinary business has aeen done at 210. There are fresh sellers :oming in, but the prices of both concerns remain stationary. There has been some business in Taff Vale Ordinary at 81. The report of the sub-committee of the Cardiff Corporation appointed to inquire into the question of the formation of a harbour trust for the port is to be laid before the general committee to-morrow for anal amendment or adoption before going ap to the council. As has been already stated, the report contains several alterna- tive schemes, these showing with what snergy and zeal the sub-committee has 'aboured in the mattet. Messrs Thackeray and Co.'s weekly re- port is as follows :— Bails.—The break caused by the holidays has laturaliy had a detrimental effect on business »enprally, and the ma: ket for our local Railway Stocks has been comparatively idle, the volume of ooeiness recorded being of a somewhat insignifi- cant character and confined almost entirely to a few transactions in Barrys and Rhymneys. A arm tendency continues to be shown by the former, and the stock continues in good request, but the latter stock is weaker, having been done dt 192%. Taff Vales show no material change from the preceding week, price remaining about 30% to 81. Rhondda and Swansea Bay neglected, but the Preferences and Debentures are in fair equest. LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Thursday. The Money Market has again been spar- ingly supplied with cash. There was a good iemand for loans, the inquiry being stimu- lated by Stock Exchange payments, and full rates were charged, short advances being quoted at 2 per cent. It would appear that the borrowings from the Bank of England have considerably anticipated the dividends to be distributed early next month, hence anticipations of a prolonged period of ease have to be modified. Discount business remains inactive and weak, three months' Bank bills being nego- tiated at 134 percent. Paris Cheque Ex- change is 2519%. Berlin Cheque, 20-42%. The Batik of Ehgknd return is favour- able. The reserve has gained 9206,807, but as the aggregate deposits held are 321,378.503 heavier, the percentage to 1 liabilities has been lowered from 56'16 to 34*87 per cent. The greater demand for loans is shown in the increase of £ 1,142,265 in other securities. The note circulation has decreased £ 48,405, and bullion increased 9158,402. The amount of the reserve is f,25,112,510, or IC5,990,000 more than last year. The stock of bullion is ;EW,790,120, showing an increase over 1893 of £ 4,555,000. The fortnightly settlement has been satis- factorily concluded, and a fair amount of fresh business was transacted. DODGING THE GAOLERS.
DODGING THE GAOLERS. gEXTRAORDINARY IMPOSITION. The gossips of the Liverpool Police-courts are discussing an extraordinary imposition said to have been practised upon prison officials. A young man named John Davies is in the custody of the police charged with assault and robbery. Some time ago he was arrested and sent to prison for assaulting a man and stealing a gold watch. The police could' not discover the watch. After doing" his two months Davies was liberated from gaol but was im- mediately again apprehended at the prison gates by Detective Gibbons. Davies was at once searched, and to the astonishment of the pohoe the stolen watch was found upon him. The supposition is that by some artful means the watch was concealed about his person during the whole two months he was confined in gaol. While detained at the main bridewell Davies tried to de- ceive the officials there, but without success. A female relative sent in, as allowed by the regula- tions, some food for Davies in a can. When he had finished his repast Davies wrote a few lines, placed them in the can, and hooed that they might reach some of bls" pals outside. A watchful warder was too much for him this time, and the clandestine correspondence which he attempted to keep lip from his prison cell was seized. This interesting young gentleman will soon come before Mr Recorder Hopwood to be dealt with. b. "¥ h-

A WEALTHY TRAMP. At the meeting of the Bath Board of Guardians the master reported that a man nam<?d James Green had been admitted to the work- house, and had turned out to be anything but destitute. He had been sheltered at the police- station for a night, and appeared to be very ill. He told the relieving officer that he had money on him, but he did not know the amount, and when he was searched at the workhouse a bank- book, showing that he was possessed of L421 9" 5d, was found.—The Chairman We shall impound it, and recover what he has cost us.— The Master said the whole amount had been taken charge of.

Toombs, a Putney youth, admitted stealing 253 and a valuable diamond ring from his employers, Messrs Bonson, jewellers, of Ludgate Hill. It was stated that the prisoner stole the money in October, and procaeeded to Paris, where he attempted to pawn the ring, and thence to Alex- audria, where he robbed an English fellow traveller aud was sent to goal. He was now sentenced to six weeks' hard labour.
