SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE CARDIFF, FRIDAY, Feb. 2nd, 1894. A very quiet tone has characterised the market to-day, and dealings have not been aumerous nor of an important character, though, all things considered, there has 'oeen a better demand for local railway securities than for the past few days. Taff Vale Ordinary is slightly firmer, and the 'atest marking is 34 better, at 79-79%, while on the local Stock Exchange business flas been done at 79, and there are further buyers at that figure. On the other hand, Barry Ordinary is weaker, and though a small amount of dealing has taken place in the course of the day at 205%, the (eaving-off price is fractionally lower, at 205—206. Rhymney Ordinary also has changed hands to a small amount at 190, but the quotation has been marked down to t89-191, or a d 'ine of 1 during the lay. In the miscellaneous market there are no changes of great consequence to note. Coal and iron shares continue to be regarded as very good buying, and the dividend declarations in respect of several of them are looked forward to with more than usual interest, as very favourable results are expected from the past half-year's trading. Among the brokers who are non-members Df the local Stock Exchange the undermen- tioned transactions have taken place Rhymney Iron New, 14s 6d, 14s 6d. Hancock's Preference Shares, 11%, Bll 18s iy2d. The report of the directors of the Cow- bridge and Aberthaw Railway for the past oali-year has just been issued. The net revenue has been £2,380, and the balance available for dividend is £ 1,723. The latter 3um is thus disposed of :—Dividend at 3% per cent. on the Ordinary Shares, £1,575 balance to next half-year, 2148. The estimate of further expenditure on capital account during the ensuing half-year is £ 4,000. The retiring directors, Mr Daniel Owen and Sir Morgan Morgan, offer them- aelves for re-election. The Newport Market report of Messrs Pillinger and Co. states :— The dividends upon the local railways have once once more proved how unreliable are the opinions which may from time to time have been circulated, although they were based upon reasonable assumptions. In the case of Taff Vale the London and other markets were agree- ably surprised. The improvement which has been maintained up to the present has been through the actual taking stock off the market. Barry Railway dividend was slightly lower than was expected in soma quarters, the price having -e receded to 205-208. With the stock-splitting scheme in view the price seems rather low, as if it is carried through, viz., into Preferred and Deferred Stock. it is worth quite 230 per cent., the 4 per Cent. Preferred, say, at 125 per cent., and the balance Deferred, say, 105 at the least, this taking thelast dividend only into consideration. Brecon and Merthyr Railway IStockand Cambrian Railway Stocks are absorbing attention, and are improving. The price of Bank of Wales Shares continue to oscillate the buyers and sellers alike not having any definite intormation as to the present amount of assets realised by the liquidators cannot but view any transaction as a speculation. There id, however, one point which, in our opinion, is not quite clear, viz. :—At the shareholders meeting resolutions were put, and at a subsequent meeting approved that the business be sold to the Metropolitan Bank, they taking over as from the 31st December, 1892. We understand, however, the business has been taken over as from 30th June, 1893, when the accounts were in a somewhat more unfavourable position from a National Bank of Wales shareholders' point of view. If this is so, are the shareholders to be asked to give their assent to this, or is it proposed to carry another agreement into effect which the shareholders have never approved of knowingly. This is a point which should not be lost sight of. We have been requested to publish the following letter TO THS FINANCIAL EDITOR. SIR, have to-day received my balance-sheet) from the Albion Colliery Company, a concern in which I have for some time been interested, and now write to you to vent what I consider to be a public grievance, viz., the perplexing way in which balance-sheets are drawn up. I find that whereas last year there was a sum of £ 36,486 5s Id cash m hand to pay dividend add redeem debentures, and which was sufficient for that pmjposa, leaving a little over, there is this year only LS,387 8s 8d so that it appears to me that even to pay tho dividend now due an overdraft will have to be obtained from thebank. Atthesame time, with a decreased profit of :£20,000, there is an increase of £ 9,100 in the debtors to the com- pany. It appears to me that the position of the company does not justify the paying off of L7,000 debentures, but perhaps you can enlighten one who is PUZZLED.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. R LONDON, Friday. The Money Market is much in the same condition. There is very little demand for money, but to-morrow the India bills have to be paid for. Plenty of money has been offering to-day at per cent., but there were no borrowers. Discount business was quiet and weak. Three months' Bank bills are taken at 2 to 2 per cent. The Paris Cheque Exchange is 25'18%. The Berlin Cheque is 20-47. Stock Exchange Markets have been very quiet and with no great change, but the tendency has, on the whole, been good, particularly towards the close. Midland Railway dividend was considered satis- factory, and it assisted in accentuating the steadiness during later hours. Consols closed at 98% to 99 for de- livery, and 99 to 993s for March 2% per Cent. (Childers'), 10034 to 100% 2% per Cent., 97% to 98 Local Loans Stock, 104% to 105J4. Last year the company had a decreased traffic of -0796,792, and the difference in dividend represents E622,780, hence the whole of the gross de- ficiency was not lost. The actual payment for the entire year was 3 per cent., against 3 per cent. in 1892. The Stock rose and Great Western, and North-Western, to but North-Eastern fell Scotch Stocks were dull. CARDIFF EXCHANGE.I
CARDIFF EXCHANGE. I BUTE DOCKS. FRIDAY. 'Change was well attended this morning, and a moderate volume of business was transacted. Steam and house coal quotations remained as last repoted, but patent fuel, owing to a falling off in the demand, was slightly easier. In our local freight market outward steam chartering was fairly active. Coasting freights were firm and advancing, Bay rates being fairly well maintained. For the Baltic the inquiry for tonnage was very limited, and there was very little doing for either East or West Indies. Mediterranean freights were unchanged, the market continuing quiet. The following com- prise the latest operations reported :— Messina, 6s 6d, clean. Leghorn, 63 7%d, clean (Conrad). Barcelona, 9s 6d, clean. Bordeaux, 6fcs (Sb Fagans). Lisbon, 5s 4%d, clean. BALTIC REPORT.
BALTIC REPORT. LONDON, FRIDAY. Freights steady. At the Baltic to-day the market for cargoes of wheat in all posi- tions ruled quiet, sellers being more anxious than buyers. Russian shippers offer more freely on easier terms, evidently becoming jealous ef the Argentine sailers of new crop River Plate. February-March are offered at 23s to 23s 3d, according to size, with probable buyers at 22s 9d to 23s. New crop Australians, February-March, sellers, 27s buyers pomt to 26s 6d. Oalifornians prompt, 27s asked Kurrachee white. 22s 6d red, 22s sellers, February-March for June-July new crop, 233 asked for red, 22s 6d buyers white held at 24s. Maize—neai positions un- changed two steamers, May-Juno and July- August, Odessa, Galatz-Foxanian, sold ab 19s 3d and 19,6d respectively. Barley quiet but steady -14s 3d near 14s prompt.

--------FUNERAL TRAMWAY CAR.
FUNERAL TRAMWAY CAR. An electric funeral tramway car has recently been constructed by one of the San Francisco tramway companies, for the San Mateo Cemetery. at a cost of £ 500. The car has been named Cypress Lawn." It is 30 feet in length, and is divided into two compartments, the forward 20 feet in length and the rear 10 feet. The former is richly upholstered, tapestried, and carpeted. Twelve plush seats are arranged to seat twenty- four persons. In the rear or funeral compart- ments, seats on each side capable of seating twenty are arranged for relatives and near friends. In the centre is the bier on which the casket stands. As San Francisco has an extensive sys- tem of electric tramways, the car can be employed throughout the city, and will to an extent super- sede the use of hearse and carriages for funerals.

All sorts of remedies were applied, but none di4 any good for more than a few days. I was recom mended to try Clarke's Blood Mixture, which I did and on taking the first bottle I felt relief. I was toN that eleven bottles would effect a perfect cure. I oti4 ook nine bottles and a half, which cost me 2s 6d pe bottle It is now ten months since, apd I have not felt the Jeast pain-in fact, I am perfect in my walk, and am in as good health as ever I was in my life Moreover, I told two friends of mine who were laid up with rheumatic pains of my cure, and they tried your Clarke's Blood Mixture. They are tailors by trade, and in seven days they were at work again, ana they say it cannot be too highly praised. -Hoping'l &at not intruding, I remain, yours sincerely, G.
