SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE FRIDAY, Nov. 17th, 1893. Though business to-day has been rather restricted in amount, there has been a better tone about the market, and the depression in Rhymney Ordinary, which was so marked yesterday, has been somewhat relieved. There is a continued demand for the Stock, and the "bearing" tendency which had evidenced itself for two or three days pre- viously has become less pronounced. The market price appears to be somewhere about 206—208, though lower figures than that are quoted, and it has been done to a certain extent at a figure so low as On the other hand, it is worthy of remark that it has also changed hands at prices varying from the one above-named to 207, so that it is a little difficult to reconcile such a wide margin at the present juncture upon any other hypothesis than that which was stated in this column yesterday- There ire, no doubt, many who are anxious to buy the Stock at ics present low price, but in consequence of the movement to which we have referred, the amount actually going into the hands of the general purchasers appears to be small. Rhymney Iron Shares are being freely dealt in at advancing prices. We learn that he general manager of the company was in Cardiff to-day from London, and that he has led it to be understood that the concern has an excellent future before it, of which tho present is but a foretaste. The undermentioned business has been done among the brokers who are non- members of the local Stock Exchange :— Barry Ordinary, 205%, 205% (odd lot), 206. Hancock's Ordinary, J314 18s 9d, and 15. On the Cardiff Stock Exchange the under- mentioned business has been done :— Rhymney Ordinary Stock, 203%. Albion Steam Coal Shares, 11%. Rhymney Iron New Shares, 12s, 12s 3d, 12s 1 Y:2d, 12s 6d, 12s 3d. Bristol and South Wales Waggons, 5 Hancock's Ordinary, 15, 15. There are new sellers of the under- mentioned :—Barry Graving Docks, at 14 London and Provincial Bank Shares, 19% Aberdare Gas Shares, at 16 Spillers' and Bakers' Ordinary, at 9 Black Lion Brewery Ordinary Rhymney Iron New Shares, at 12s Hancock's Ordinary Shares Albion Colliery Shares, at 11% Great Western Colliery B Shares, at 4%. Declined.—Spillers' and Bakers' Ordinary I to 9—9%. The Khondda and Swansea Bay Railway Company announce the issue of 15,000 5 per Cent. Preference Shares of B10 each, at par, the issue being made through the Metro- politan Bank, Limited. This new capital was authorised by a general meeting of shareholders, held in August, 1392, when £150.000 Preference Shares and £50.000 Debenture Stock were agreed upon. The object of the company is to establish an independent and direct route for the greater shipment of Rhondda coal through Swansea instead of Cardiff and Barry, and this will also afford facilities for the large and rich coalfield of the Avon Valley, now being developed. This has only been partially obtained,, however, by the opening of the line from the Rhondda Valley to Port Talbot, and the completion of a further three miles towards Briton Ferry. Through traffic to the latter place may be expected by the end of this year. The total authorised capital of the company, including borrowing powers, is £1,028,000. Up to the present time £683,000 has been placed, leaving unexercised powers to the extent of The estimated cost of completing tho works now in hand is £170,000.

----------------HOW TO KEEP…
HOW TO KEEP YOUR SERVANTS. An old bachelor who has just died in Paris in a house in the Boulevard liichard Lenoir, at the axe of 87 years, hit/ipon an original idea for en- suring proper attention from his two servants in his declining years. Twelve years ago he went to bis lawyer and made a will, under which ha left the two women an annuity of £ 24 each, to be in- creased by B4 for every year that he should con- tinue to live. Tho will has just been proved, and the legacies have been allowed at the rate of JE82 a year each. The old man was in the habit of. making great fun out of the mother]y care with which lie was looked after. You may be quita sure," he would say, that they will not let me die soon if they can help it." He seems to have overlooked the fact that it was clearly not to the interest of the women that he should survive them.

LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE,
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE, LONDON, Friday. The Money Market is steadier. Balances have been reduced within more reasonable limits, and the export inquiry for gold for the Continent remains very firm. The market consequently steadied, and yet higher rates are looked for. For short loans the charge has been 1 to 1% per cent. Discounts were steady, three months' Bank bills being negotiated at 2% percent. Paris Cheque Exchange is 25.16; Berlin Cheque, 20"33y2. The Stock Exchange business has been more active, and there has been a distinctly better tendency. It appears to be at last recognised that the recent rumours of financial scandals have been considerably exaggerated, and that therefore bear accounts, which have been opened on chance of unpleasant disclosures, had better be adjusted. At the same time there have been unfavourable ;nfiuences of a smart re- covery in silver, and, with a belief that the conference will bring about a settlement of the coal dispute the tone of the markets in consequence has distinctly improved, and prices in the majority of instances have im proved. Consols closed at 98 to 98% for delivery and account 2% per Cent. (Childers'), 101 to 101% 5 2% per Cent., 97 to 97% Local Loans Stock, 104 to 104%, Foreign Bonds have been distinctly better on the closing of bear accounts. Italian rose Spanish, 1. Hungarian and Russian were steady j Egyptian and Turks fairly firm South Americans quiet. Buenos Ayres Gold Premium remains at 227 per cent. Argentines were without ^any particular change. Brazilian were steady and better; Peruvian quiet. There has been more doing in British Railways, and prices have improved in most cases. Great things are expected from tho conference on tho coal question, and there is, therefore, some inclination to purchase stocks at thwir present depreciated values. A a regards hwavy lines, North-Eastern re- mained about the same, but others rose to Scotch stocks were quiet North British rather easier Great Eastern rose 1 Ys. Hull and Barnsley, Sheffield, Deferred, Metropolitan, and District were quiet. Southern lines were firm-Brighton A rose and South-Eastern A There was a distinctly better tendency in the American Railway Market. Owing to the closing of accounts for the fall, and the receipt of better prices from New York, all speculative issues have hardened, and the market has had a more buoyant appearance than it has worn for some days. Milwaukees rose Louisvilles, New York Central, 1 Norfolk Preference, Northern Pacific Preference, 1; Union Pacifics, Atchison series, Atlantics, and others were rather better. Canadian Railways were quiet without any particular change, but Grand Trunks irere weak at the last, the Preferences fall- > t0 Mexican Railways were firmer on the improvement in silver. First Preference rose 1% and Ordinary, Second Preference, after being 1 better, closed un- changed. In Nitrates, dealings were limited but the market was steady. Amongst Miscellaneous, Banks and Breweries were quiet, Trusts were an irre- gular market Gas Light and Coke fell 2 South Metropolitan C, 3 Pernambuco Waterworks Debentures 5 lower. As a proof she had brought to court one of her sons, whose face was clearly marked with the disease. In another caso tho child had been kept at home because fever bad raged in the house. An elder sister in a third case pleaded that her father had been confined to his house through illness for two years, and they were in such straits that they could not get clothes to put on her brother to send him to school.-Aiiother matron, who had been previously summoned for similar neglect, on being fined half-a-crown, tartly told the officer who extended his palm to receive the coin, that she had no money, and that he would have to wait until her husband, who was out of employment, obtained work. Charles Davies, a chimney-sweep, of Charles- street, made no response when he was called to answer a charge of being drunk in the Black Swan Beerhouse, Market-street, on Saturday last. -Ofhcer David Thomas found Davies standing in the bar, and, at the request of the landlady, desired him to leave, and Davies immediately staggered lut. li He was drunk in the wrong place," commented i ho magistrates' clerk, and the Bnch decided on a 5s penalty. William Davies and his spouse, who reside at 5, Ailesbury-streefc, Marshes-road, wera aroused from their peaceful slumbers, shortly before midnight, by Mrs Elizabeth Hnrt,t a resident of the same street, who had beea imb:bing, hammering at their frontdoor. Mrs Davies pressed and went down to know what was wrong, and was warmly received by Mrs Hart, who tore her dress. Davies then appeared below stairs in dishabille, and in en- deavouring to get his wife out of the grasp of Mrs Hart, was struck a violent blow in the face, by Geo. Hart, tho husband of the other woman. The blow opened the skin and blackened Davies' eye. Mrs Hart, when asked by the-magistrates this morninjf if she had. any questions to put, said "No, sir I thank you, I am very sorry I had a drop to drink." The woman was then let off on payment of a 5s penalty. The husband, Geo. Hart, lacked the wisdom of his b«tter half, he did not appear, neither did he send an apology, the penalty in his cae was the-refore fixed at 21s, and the police were armed with a cornmitmentfor 28 dayssnould that amount not be forthcoming.—This concluded the business, the magistrates remarking to Head Constable Sinclair, as the latter was gathering up his papers prior to leaving the court, Things are very quiet since the new mayor came in."
