SWANSEA METALEXCtlANGE.
SWANSEA METALEXCtlANGE. SWANSEA, TUESDAY. The disorganised state of the trade arising from the action of the colliers has almost entirely suspended all business operations. A large number of works are standing for the want of coal, and it is feared that further stoppages must inevitably take place if the strike continues to spread. Tho quotations given below are somewhat nominal, as any business concluded is based upon the best arrangement that can be made. Under the circumstances the manufacturers all round contemplate the entire stoppage of their works, as being the best remedy they have arrived at in the present depressed state of tho market for all the manufactured articles. Notwithstanding the prospects of a re- duced production, so far it has had no effect upon the price of pig iron, which is quoted to-day at a somewhat easier price than last week, and which shows that the consumption is more interfered with than the production, and stocks are increas- ing as a consequence, and it would appear at the whole trade of the country is in a state of chaos, aud that it will take some time to bring about a more settled state of things. SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE TUESDAY, AUG. 15th, 1893. The state of almost complete stagnation co which the district is being reduced by the stoppage of the collieries and the consequent restriction of the shipment of coal, has become so serious that if things go on much longer as at present the morning assemblage on 'Change will soon become a farce. Coal in any large quantities being practically un- obtainable, prices for such small amounts as come upon the marketare going to ridiculously high figures. We hear to-day of as much as 25s and 27s being given for a few waggon loads to complete bunkering in the cases of one or two vessels that have been delayed already. But these figures nepresent prac- tically nothing, for as there is little or no coal in the market it is next to impossible to aay what the market price of coal is. The extremity of an owner or two may lead to a fabulous price being given, but that must "oe understood as an altogether exceptional transaction, and not one which serves to establish any regularly recognised price. The demands of sellers have, of course, gone up enormously, and they are naturally getting as much as they possibly can for what they have to dispose of. To-day the docks have been at a standstill, and we believe ive are within the mark in saying that not half-a-dozen tips are working with uny degree of regularity. This condition of things must soon begin to tell upon the aumber of vessels entering the port, and so irade must be materially depressed all round. This morning on 'Change it was widely suggested that the offices at the Docks might with advantage close their doors, and allow their staffs to take a holi- day until such times as the present labour. dispute is settled. The following business has taken place among the non-members of the Cardiff Stock Exchange;- Crown Soap Shares, 25s. Taff Vale Ordinary Stock, 78 cum. divi- dend. Illinois Central, 94%. The 22nd half-yearly meeting of the proprietors of the Rhondda and Swan- sea Bay Railway Company was dis- tinguished by the smallest attend- ance of shareholders on record. The same applies to the directors, only five of whom were present. The directors, unfortunately, had no cheerful news to tell of the half-year's working, every- thing tending towards a decrease save ex- penses, which were necessarily higher in proportion to the receipts. The dividend, too, was as small as it well could be-only per cent., but the shareholders keptheir spirits up for they had the knowledge that the independent line is being pushed forward as rapidly as possible, and they were given the still more satisfactory assur- ance that April may see the completion of the whole independent line between Swansea and the Rhondda and there are probably no shareholders who do not expect » very good profit, with high dividends directly this long looked-for consummation is realised. On the Brecon and Merthyr Ra lway last week the traffic receipts amounted to 21,590 7s lOd, as compared with £ 1,772 16s 6d for the corresponding week last year, the decrease on the week being £ 182 8s 8d. The aggregate for the past seven weeks is Lll,109 2s 9d, or an increase over the corresponding period of J5557 3s lid.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Tuesday. The Money Market is quieter, and there is an easier tendency. As the excitement in New York is dying out here, more Inclination to do business is noticed, and as money is plentiful prices are inclined to recede. As regards discounts, three months'Bank bills are taken at 4 per cent. Loans were in quiet request at 2 per cent. for short periods. The Paris Cheque Exchange is 25'34, and Berlin Cheque 20-46. There was nothing of interest on the Stock Exchange. In fact, if it were not for the transactions necessary for the adjust- ment of a very meagre account, business would be practically at a standstill. Con- sidering the limited extent of dealings the markets may be described as fairly firm, though American Railways have remained very sensitive.
