BALTIC REPORT, LONDON, THURSDAY. Freights not quotably lower, but quiet. At the Baltic to-day there was a continued absence of demand for cargoes of wheat in all positions, and values sciti droop, notwithstanding the low range obtained 25s net is the best bid for Alexander Lawrence Plate wheat, off coast. In white wheats and Russians there is nothing passing. Indians dull. Maize quiet—20s asked for the steamer Biakemoor at Gibraltar from Odessa, at which figure business will likely result 21s asked for September-October, Galatz-Foxanian buyers, 203 6d. Barley more freely offered. The steamer Maggie, Azoff afloat, sold at 14s 9d, and this price would be accepted for September-October, and 15s fov November-December. Beans neglected.

WRECKS AND CASUALTIES. (SPECIAL TELKGRAMK FROM LLOYD'S A3ENT3.1 The steamer Golconda, from Calcutta for London, brought up off Draystou Rock, Penlee Point, Ply- mouth, during a fug, but floated with the rising tide. The steamer Erasmus Wilson, before reported ashore near Lowestoft, floated on Thursday morning, after jettisoning about 150 tons of coal, with the assistance of two tugs. No agreement. She proceeded for London apparently undamaged. The steamer Maggie Barr collided with a dredger at Fleetwood, and both vessels were damaged. The steamer Colonist has put into Melbourne with two blades of her propeller broken.

A SPANISH TRAGEDY. The Spanish papers tell a strange story of passion and revenge. A young and beautiful Andalusian, married to a husband to whom she was strongly attached, was besieged by the atten- tions of the Don Juan of the little village in which she lived. The fascinating airs, however, of the would-be lover made no impression on the young wife, and in revenge he circulated a report that the lady had yielded to his wishes. The story seon reached the ears of the wife, who, at the hour when people were leaving church, armed herself with a knife, and, in company with her husband, who did not know that she carried a weapon, went off towards the church. As scon as Dun Juai) C¡re iij), ri upok him, plunged the knife into his heart, exclaiming, at the same time, That for trying to dishonour women It is safe to say that she will not be executed.

SOUTH WALES FINANCE THURSDAY, AUG. 10th, 1893. In accordance with the notices issued some days ago, a special meeting of the jhareholders of the National Bank of Wales was held this morning in the crush-room of the Park-hall, Cardiff, for the purpose of considering the advisability of appointing a -,ommittee of shareholders to act in con- junction with the liquidators. Mr Dovey, one of the liquidators, presided, and there was a very fair attendance of shareholders, some of those present having come from the North of England for the special purpose of taking part in the proceedings. A preliminary statement, made by the chairman, was considered as of a highly satisfactory nature, inasmuch as he com- municated to the meeting the fact that during the past fortnight he had been able to obtain securities for overdrafts on the bank to the amount of £100,000, and in respect of which the bank had previously had no securities. Questions were asked as to whether this sum was independent of an amount of £70,000 previously dealt with in respect of which securities existed, and the reply was to the effect that the larger sum did not include the other, the sums being quite separate and distinct. On the motion of Mr W. W. Jones, it was resolved that, in agreement with the expressed wishes of Mr Dovey, a committee of five be appointed to assist and co-operate with the liquidators in the performance of their task, and the names of the following gentlemen were approved of as constituting the committee, viz. :—Mr J. Davis, J.P.. Gwyneddon, Carnarvon Mr J. E. Roberts, Upper Bangor; Mr W. E. Lloyd, Bridgend Mr J. Thomas, Tonypandy and Mr W. W. Jones, Cardiff. Having regard to the fact that something like half the interests of the 15ank lay in North Wales, it was felt that it was only right that both portions of the Principality should be represented on the committee. A.t the close of the proceedings, which lasted about three-quarters of an hour, Mr Ronnfeldt inquired why, in the face of certain statements which had been made in the balance-sheet last issued as to provision being made for bad and doubtful debts, there should have been what appeared to be '» remarkable condition of things with regard to overdrafts. He wisely pre- faced his remarks by saying that he had no desire to press for information on the point at that moment if it might be considered detrimental to the interests of the share- holders to afford it. The presiding liquida- tor was unable to give a definite reply "is he was not in a position to say what was In the minds of those who framed the balance-sheet and the notes of the report. He could only speak of what had transpired subsequently to his nomination to the office )f liquidator. The present he regarded as \n inopportune moment for imparting in- formation on this point. We understand ohat it will be part of the duty of the com- mittee to recommend whether certain secun- relating to the overdrafts shall or shall (lot be realised to assist in finding out the full indebtedness to the bank, to place their own knowledge of the position in each dis trict at the disposal of the liquidators, and lo generally advance the interests of the shareholders. The general market to day has been rather quiet, but there is a continued in- quiry for the three principal local railway securities at slowly hardening prices. Rhymney is marked up 1%, and business is likely to receive a further impetus should the result of the meeting to-morrow prove satisfactory. A good amount of Barry stock has changed hands, and fresh buyers are coming in. The aggregate for the past five weeks is £29,615, or a decrease as compared with the corresponding period of 2295. Messrs Thackeray and Co.'s weekly report is as follows Rails.-The break caused by the holidays has not had very much effect on this market, tha volume of business for the week having been up to the mark and the inquiry for the Ordinary Stocks well maintained up to the present. The Barry meeting passed off satisfactorily, the questions of stock-splitting and the consolidation of preferences were duly alluded to, but no definite scheme presented, these matters will doubtless come to a head, but will take time to formulate. Transactions in the Stock have been fairly numerous and quotations remain unaltered. At the close there is, we think, a slight indication of a desire on the part of some holders to take advantage of present prices. The -210 Shares have been converted into Ordinary Stock. Meagre as was the information given at the general meeting of the Taff Vale as to the negotiations with the Rhymney, it has had the effect of stimulating intending buyers of the latter Stock, and chough the price is not quite so high as at the close of last week, the market has a Srm tendency, and after the meeting which takes place on the Ilth, we should not be surprised to see an improvement on present quotations. 3tock has changed hands to a fair extent at 214% -215, and there are still buyers at the latter igure. Taff Vales are without special feature. The report of the Rhondda and Swansea Bay, Just issued, announces, in addition to the Prefer- ence dividend, per cent. on the Ordinary capital, but to enable this to be done JBl,250 has to be taken from the reserve fund. Shares are still being dealt in at about 7%. There has been an absence of local Preference and Debenture Stocks in the market, consequently little business to note. BanU.-No material change has occurred in the quotations for Bank Shares, and there is still a want of vitality in this market, business con- tinuing of a limited character. Only a few transactions to record in National of Wal-sat 4% and 4%, and Lloyds at 251%. Coal and Iron.-The unfortunate change in the aspect of affairs in the coal trade so far has had no depressing influence on the market, for although business cannot perhaps be said to be of a very brisk nature, still a fair amount of atten- tion is directed to these securities, principal dealings having been in North's, Penrikybers, Western Colliery B, Albions, and Abercarns. Miseellan.eous.-A fairly active market, Bute Dry Docks, SpilJers'. Bristol and South Wales Waggons, Hancock Debentures, &c., having changed hands to a moderate extent. LQNDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Thursday. In view of the currency difficulties in the United States and the continuance of heavy gold shipments to New York, a further advance in the Bank rate to 4 per cent. has created no surprise. In fact, unless condi- tions speedily change there is no question that the rate will go yet higher, although there is nothing in the ordinary features of the market to warrant current quotations. Following the movement at the Bank, joint stock banks have raised their deposit rates 1 per cent. to 2% percent. Discount houses give 2% per cent. for money at call, and 2% if with notice, being a rise of 1 per cent. The market to-day was firm. Three months' Bank bills were taken at 3% to 4 per cent. For loans a moderate demand was experienced, the charge for short advances being 2% to 2% per cent. The Paris Cheque Exchange is 25.32. The Bank of England returns, as was expected, shows a heavy falling off in resources. There is a decrease in reserve of £ 2,197,298, and the proportion to liabilities is 42'99 per cent., against 46*11 per cent, last week. The deficiency in bullion is £2,290,708, but the note circula- tion has been reduced £ 93,410. Other deposits have been further lowered £ 2,003,658, showing further curtailment in the supply of money. The stock of bullion is £ 25,232,459, or about Bl, 500,000 less than last year, and the reserve, which is L14,615, 000, shows a decrease of £1,900.000. On the Stock Exchange, business doing has been very moderate. The advance in the Bank rate having been anticipated, had no effect upon the markets, but there was a dull tone owmg to general restriction of dealing on the part of the public, and the almost entire absence of speculation. Consols closed at 98 to 98% for delivery, and 981\ to 981\ for the account; 2% per Cent. (Childers'), 101 to 102; 2% per Ceat., 96% to 97% Local Loans Stock, 105 to 104. Foreign Bonds have been dull in the absence of business. Spanish opened steadily, but receded later, and closed ys down. Italian were a shade better, and Greeks firmer. Hungarian, Russian, Egyp- tian, and Turks are quiet. Buenos Ayres Gold Premium has declined to 241 per cent. Argentines were, however, fractionally weaker. Brazilians also were dull, and lower. Mexican were flat at first, but re- covered. Peruvian were again weak. Preference fell and Debentures, Rio Exchange remains at 12A. Uruguay 9 13 declined Venezuela, 1. In British Railways business is in a state of suspense, and scarcely any change was noticed. At the close the finish was some- what better than the opening. Heavy lines were weak at first, but not much alteration was observed at the finish. Midland fell 74 and North-Eastern Southern lines left off tolerably good. South Eastern A advanced Brighton A, Great Eastern was unaltered Districts rather better Hull and Barnsley and Sheffield Deferred weak. In Scotch stocks there was nothing doing. North British declined 74 to American Railways were more or less neglected, and were mostly weak. Milwau- kees and Union Pacifics were to better, but Atchison A Bonds fell 1% Denver Preference, 1)4; Louisville, 1% Lake Shores, Norfolk Preference, and others were practically easier. There is no business doing here, and the market is merely a reflection of the state of affairs at New York Canadian Railways were dull. Canadian Pacific Shares fell Grand Trunk Prefer- ences and Guaranteed, to Mexican Railways were steady on the rise in silver. Ordinary rose First Preference, and Seconds, 1. SUICIDE BY DYNAMITE. A suicide by dynamite is reported from Cransac in the Department of the Aveyron. The perpet- rator of the act of felo-de-se was a, man named Albouy, who lately left his wife and family for reasons which have not been yet discovered. His body was found in a field by gendarmes, the skull being blown to pieces. It is surmised that Albouy placed a dynamite cartridge in his mouth and set fire to it. There were the marks of a burn on his right hand. People living near the place where the body was found state that they heard a loud detonation one afternoon last week, but paid no attention to the matter.
