SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE t SATURDAY. July 10th, 1892. Business was done to-tuty to a greater extent than on several days of the week, and now that the excitement consequent upon local Parlia- mentary elections has subsided, there is every prospect of the stock market assuming a more active tone. and getting into its usual form. Dealings have taken place in James Tucker's Debentures at par, while business to some extent has been done in the Ordinary. North's Colliery Shares have been transacted at 2%. Spillers' and Bakers' Ordinary Shares. bave changed hands at 13%, and London and Pro-, vinci:.l Bank Shares at 20/g. The Bryncelyn (Pontardawe) Gaslight and Coke Company, Limited, was registered on the 30th ult., with a capital of £1,500, in £10 shares, to light with gas, electricity, oil, or other illuminating power the parishes of Llanguicke and Killybebill, in the county of Glamorgan. The number of directors is not to be less than three, nor more than five. the first being Messrs G. Griffiths, H. Jones, and R. A. Browning qualification, 250. Registered office, Bryncelyn, Pontardawe, Glamorgan. The Cwmbrwyno Blende and Lead Company, Limited, was registered on the 4th inst. with a capital of £ 10,000, in JB1 shares, to carry out an agreement for the acquisition of certain mining rights in Cardiganshire; to explore, prospect, develop, and maintain the property of the com- pany, and to carry on the business of miners, smelters, and metal merchants. The subscribers are:-Messrs G. W. Horne. M.E., 146, Sinclair- road, Kensington, W.; P. Trickett. 119. London Wall, brick merchant: J. Gamble, 155, Sloane street, S.W. A. F. There are new buyers of Mid-Wales Railway 4V2 per Cent. Debenture Stock London and Provincial Banks; Nell's Ordinary Barry Ordi- nary Cardiff Pure Ice B Shares; Bristol Brewery Debentures; Lloyd's Bank Shares Barry Debenture Stock Bute Debenture Stock; London and Provincial Bank Shares. The following changes have occurred since yesterday :-Advanced-Barry Ordinary Stock 1, to 198-200 Great Western Stock l/2, to 165-166 London and North-Western Stock to 174- 175 National Provincial Bank, JB12 paid, Shares. y2, to 50%-51%- Declined-Ebbw Vale Shares to 3.4. The weekly report of Messrs J. W. Courtis and Co. states that the business of the week has been considerably interfered with owing to the elec- tions, but there are not wanting indications that as soon as the excitement caused tboreby hit subsided and business restored to its normal conditions we shall see activo markets again. Barry Stock is quiet at 198-199. The shipments will hardly Tie so favourable this week as Mabon's Day has come iu, and the output from the collieries has been curtailed by the elections. The Debenture Stock and Preferences are firm at ]ast week's prices. Taff Stock has developed further strength, and closes at 77-78, and Messrs Courtis and Co. are still inclined to think that this stock should be bought for investment, the dividend prospects being favourable. Rhyrr-ney Stock has advanced to 199-200, but the improved quotation has not brought much stock on the market, so that their ideas as to dividend seem to be shared by stock holders. The report presented to shareholders of the London and Provincial Bank, Limited, deals with the half-year to June 30, and shows that, after making provision for bad and doubtful debts (and including the amount brought forward), the gross profits are £165,892, which, after the payment of current expenses, leaves a divisible balance of £ 70,215. This enables the declaration of an in- terim dividend at the rate of 17 per cent. per annum, which will absorb £ 42,500. The dividend compares with 15 per cent. interim in July of last year, and 15 per cent. with 2s bonus in January last. A sum of LS,330 will, it is recommended, be added to the reserve fund, raising it to £ 575,000, all invested in consols and written down to 90. A sum of £ 14,846 will be carried forward, £2,500 given to the officers' pension fund, £ 2,500 to premises account, and E4,538 to rebate on bills.
THE RHYMNEY IRON COMPANY.
THE RHYMNEY IRON COMPANY. TO THE EDITOR. SIR,- Under the beading" South Wales Finance" in Saturday's issue of the South Wales Daily News reference is made to the very un- satisfactory state of the Rhymney Iron Company's annual statement of accounts. In common with my fellow-shareholders, I fully endorse and agree with every word in that article. The concern has had all the advantage of a year commanding a bigh price for coat, and yet it pays no dividend. The chairman of the company, Sir H. Tyler, is but a small shareholder, and has no particular knowledge of the coal trade, and the same may be said of his fellow-directors but theyregularly take £1.500 every year as their fees, besides extras, under the head Travelling expenses," &c., when the shareholders do not get a penny. The directing of the affairs of the company by the present Board is an utter failure from a shareholder's point of view. I mention that before this company will be able to pay a small dividend regularly, the present Board must be changed for a body of gentlemen having some practical knowledge of the business committed to their care. Professional" directors must be done away with. May I suggest to Messrs Thackeray A; Co., of Cardiff, as brokers, who have done a great busi- ness in the shares of the company, the desira- bility of calling a meeting of shareholders at Cardiff to take into consideration the necessity of changing the present Board, the removal of the London office to Cardiff, and several other matters that the shareholders must take in hand to protect their property from utter ruin — I am, &c., SHAREHOLDER.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Saturday. Tbjre is nothing new to notice as regards money. Supply remains very large, and the demand is only moderate. Tenders for £ 1,500,000 Treasury bills will be received by the Bank of England on the 14th inst., being double the amount maturing; consequently the operation will reduce outside balances to some extent. Not much was done in loans to-day, and they were offered at per cent. Discount business was quiet. Three months' Bank bills were taken at H to per cent. There was nothing of interest on the Stock Exchange. Business was throughout very re- stricted, but at the same time there was a steady tone, particularly for British and American Railways. Closing prices showed very little change from yesterday. Metropolitan advanced on approaching opening of extension to Ayles- bury. Caledonian fell The Southern lines were featureless. Brighton A finished up down. There was. no change in South-Eastern A. American Railways were again firm, though not active. The further improvement in New York has been reflected here, and most issues have hardened. No further change of import- ance occurred in Louisvilles. Milwaukees and Northern Pacific Pre- ference each advanced whilst Lake Shores were 1 up. Mexican Railways were quiet and rather weak, Ordinary and First Preference falling to South Americans were mere or less dull. Central Argentine declined 1. Nitrates were inactive, with no great change. Amongst Miscellaneous Securities dealings have been limited. Eastmans rose Bank Shares were steady, and occasionally \i to better. THE TIN-PLATE TRADE.
THE TIN-PLATE TRADE. LIVERPOOL, Saturday.—Although a fair amount of inquiry has come to hand this week, very little business has resulted. The elections have inter- fered greatly, and the near approach of quarter-, day has had the usual quietening influence. The sorts most asked for were C 14 by 19% Bessemer cokes and heavy cross cokes. For the former buyers were willing to pay 12s 3d and 12s 4d f.o.b. Wales. Ternes and charcoal tins of all grades and qualities are comparatively neglected. A little business for San Francisco in ordinary weight C 14 by 20 Bessemer cokes is also re- ported, and a few lines of OW 14 by 19% were disposed of at prices ranging from 10s 6d to 10s 9d f.o.b. Wales. Last week's figures unchanged, and are as follows C 14 by 20 Bessemer cokes, lis 10d to 12s ld; C 14 by 19%, 12s 4d squares and odd sizes, 12s 4d basis C 14 by 20 Siemens' cokes, 12s 4%d to 12s 7^d squares and odd sizes, 12s 7%d to 12s 9d basis charcoal tins, 13s and upwards, according to quality and finish and ternes, 22s 3d to 26s per double-box, all f.o.b. Wales.
THE IRON TRADE.
THE IRON TRADE. WOLVERHAMPTON, Saturday.—A more satis- factory tone characterises the close of the week. The interruption to business produced by the Parliamentary elections is now passing away. In one or two cases in this district works have been laid off from this cause. The suspension has per- mitted the accumulation of a fair amount of busi- ness in small lots, and fhe restart early next week will be under rather better circumstances than usual. An encouraging feature of present business is the activity of some of the steelmakers. They are well engaged in the production of plates, bars, and blooms, and in some cases will not quote without specifi- cations. Best steel stamping sheets are also in good demand at about 210 for deep steel stamp- ings, whilst trunk and coal-vase sheets are also being ordered by japanners and other metal plate-workers. In finished iron the marked-bar houses report the receipt of rather better orders of late, and it is indicative of the condition of stocks that customers ask for early delivery. Marked bars are quoted about C8, second- grade sorts about 27, and common jB5 15s upwards to L6 and 26 5s. In small rounds a fair business is done at £ 6 5s to £610s. Galvanised corrugated sheets are £ 11 12s 6d for 24 gauge f.o.b. Liverpool. Plain sheets are about JS7 for singles, with doubles and lattens in proportion. Hoops are 26 12s 6d, and gas tube strip is about R6 2s 6d. Bright cold- rolled strip is in fairly good request. Business in angles and tees is rather better, and joists, channels, and other constructive sections are also improving. In crudeiron inquiries are being made for supplies of both forge and foundry for de- livery up to September. There are about 26 furnaces in blast in this district, and the make is nearly all going into immediate consumption. All-mine hot blast is quoted about £ 3 2s 6d, and part-mines, £ 2 4s to £ 2 5s. For common sorts, £ 116s to £ 1 17s 6d is asked. JB2 7s is the average quotation for Lincolns, and about J62 18s 6d for Barrow hematites delivered Staffordshire. A tolerably good demand at present prices alike for crude and finished iron, with steel a shade higher than at present, is 1 expected at the forthcoming quarterly meeting here on the 13tb, and in Birmingham the follow- ing day. Coal is in slow demand at unchanged classes of ookes are & 444de easier.

The clubs were well attendedi to-day, and business was fairly brisk. Early in the day as littlo as 65 to 40 was taken about Orme for the Eclipse Stakes, but later on as much as 2 to 1 was laid in several quarters, while the closing price was 7 to 4. The slight opposition was attributed to the report that he might be tried in a few hours. Gouverneur left off as good a favourite as Orvieto, bat St. Damien retired to 5 to 1. Liverpool Cup betting was quiet, but Nunthorpe was again hacked at 11 to 2. while 500 to 45 was accepted about Clarence, and 1,000 to 80 about Coromandel. For the St. Leger Orme was rather quiet, though 600 to 200 was was booked in a good quarter. St. Damien retired to 10 to 1 offered, and no others were supported. F. Barrett was at Kingsclere on Thursday, and rode Orme in a half-speed gallop of a mile and a quarter, accompanied by Blue-green and Vasistas. The King of Italy, through his agent at Rugby, has just purchased one of Lord Braye's hunters, Nimrod," for 300gs. The horse was to have been sold with the rest of the stud at Tattersall's next week. A sculling match is announced to take place on Wednesday from Chiswick Point to Barnes Bridge, between Miss Mary Burrell, of Cam- bridge, and Miss Smith, of the Bull's Head, Barnes. The Diamond Sculls at Henley Regatta, for the first time since their institution in 1844, have passed into the hands of a foreigner, Mr J. J. K. Ooms, of the Neptunus R.C., Amsterdam, de. feating in the final heat Mr S. M. Boyd, of Trinity College, Dublin. The feature in the London market 811 Friday was the renewed support accorded to Orme for both the Eclipse Stakes and the St» Leger. It is rumoured that a "rough gallop" at Kingsclere has been to the satisfaction of those most inte- rested, and that, barring any further unexpected calamity, the favourite may be put down as a certain starter for the Sandown race.
