I was very bad with an attack of Influenza, and after taking your Microbe Killer for three hours I felt much better, and in a few days was com- pletely cured.—Yours truly, P. SELERI, 184, Wardour- street, W. DIRECTIONS.—On the first appearance of symptoms, patient should remain indoors, and if possible, go to bed. Microbe Killer 0.2 must be taken in regular doses of 6 tablespoonfuls at intervals of half-an-hour until symptoms begin to yield. Should catarrhal symptoms appear, the nasal cavities must be syringed out with the remedy, or some of the fluid may be sniffed i up from the hand. If rigorous measures, such as are indicated above, are pursued from the first, the disease will quickly disappear. There is almost always much physical exhaustion left after the subsidence of the acute stages, and for this condition the best possible tonic is Microbe Killer in smaller doses, and given at much longer intervals. 0 SOUTH WALES FINANCE TUESDAY, MAlten 8th, 1892. At last the report of the directors of North s Navigation Collieries for the half-year ended January 2nd, 1892, has been issued, and with it is distributed a copy of the report upon the mineral property of the company by Messrs Forster Brown ^pd Rees, the weli-known mining engineers. The directors' report is to the follow- ing effect :— The directors submit a balance sheet made up to the 2nd January. 1892, and profit and loss account for the half-year ended on that date. The net profits for the half-year were £ 15,002 15s 5d, to which is to be added £3,080 6s brought forward from the previous half year, making £18,083 Is 5d for disposal. Tho di- rectors recommend that a dividend at the rate of 10 per cent. per annum be paid on tho amounts called up from time to time on the preference shares, and a dividend at the rate of 5 per cent. per annum on the ordinary shares, together absorbing £ 11,750; that £ 3,000 be applied towards improving the properties, and that the balance of £ 3,533 Is 5d be carried forward to next aocount. Th« profits in the last half-year of 1891 have been less than in previous half-years, owing to a progressive falling-off in the selling price of coal and c'jke, whilst the workman's wages still remained on the higher scale. After lengthened discussion and mutual conces- sions between representatives of masters and men in the district, a reduction of wages and a new sliding-scale were agreed upon at the ond of the year and it is hoped that the effect will be to put the division of earnings upon a fairer basis. The various works of the company are being carried -11 satisfactorily, and rapid pro- gress is beifig made in the very important opera- tion of sinking thene pits atCaerau,by which the company's output of large steam coal will be greatly 'increased. Th$Qjntr^oteFhopfl# to rcach tKfc 6ix feet seam of by end of July next, and preparations are being made for dealing adequately with the augmented output. In con- sequence. however, of the higher wages and the enhanced prices of materials the expenditure on these pits will exceed the first estimates and the directors have determined to invite applica- tions from the shareholders (in the first instance) for 6 per cent. terminable debentures. The amount of -035,000 is considered sufficient for present requirements, and, as the debentures will be secured by special mortgage to trustees, they are recommended to members of the company as an exceptionally safe and desirable invest- ment. A resolution on this subject will be submitted to the meeting. A special report by the company's engineers (Messrs Forster Brown and Rp.\ nnon the mineral properties of the new developments in progress is enclosed herewith. The directors who retire are Messrs T. Forster Brown and John Waite, who, being eligible, offer themselves for re-election. The auditors, Messrs J. (X Chadwick and Son, also retire and offer themselves for re-election. A comparison of the above report with those for previous half-years shows that on four successive occasions the directors have had to announce a decline in the net profits. Whereas they are now only £ 15,002, they were for the half- year ended June 27th, 1891, 219,8,37 ior th4 half-year ended December 27th, 1890, 225,801 and for the half-year ended June 28th, 1890, 226,717. It will thus be seen that in something like two years the earnings have fallen from £26, 717 to £ 15,002. For the half-years ended June, 1890; December, 1&90; and June, 1891, dividends at the rate of 10 per cent. per annum were recommended, but now it w be seen that 10 per cent. jpid only on the Preference Shares, the distri- bution on the Ordinary being 5 per cent. In other words, while the directors have hitherto been in a position to divide among the share- holders £ 20,000, they can now only so deal with £ 11,750. The amount proposed to be expended in improving the properties of the company and to be carried forward are about the same this year as last, but they are only about half the sum total so employed in 1890. The working ex- penses do not show that large increasp that might havn been expected from the tone of the report, or that would seem tj be necessary to justify so marked a decline in the prosperity of the company. The general tenour of the report must be pronounced unsatisfactory, and while it was not expected that things would look so favourable as in previous half-years, a good deal of disappointment has been experienced by share- holders. The sum of £ 22,809 has been expended on new works during the half-year. The report of the engineers, after giving details as to the new enterprises that have been taken in hand or completed by the company, concludes with the following We have only to add that in our opinion the whole cf the improvements which have been effected at the existing collieries, as well as the new colliery developments in progress, kave not only been judicious, but are calculated in the ultimate result to enormously increase the permanent value of your mineral property, especially in the most im- portant or Maesteg section. Business has been on the whole of a satisfactory character to-day. The run on the Btrry new allotments has continued, but the price has not advanced, and the numerous transactions to-day have all been at the rate of 90 per cent. premium. The present seoms to be recognised as a favourable opportunity for small investors, as any amount from j31 upwards may be purchased. Already some very small amounts have been bought, and the desire of the capitalist of limited means to have a stake in Barry seems to be becoming general. Th-y know exactly what they are going in for, as they begin to participate in the Ordinary from the date of payment, April 5th. Barry Ordinary Stock has been dealt in at 195% xd the New, which shows a slight improvement in price during the last day or two. The First Preference Stock has changed hands at 137%, 137%, and 137. In other rails there has not been much business, but Rhondda and Swansea Bay Shares have changed hands at 7, and Great Western Railway Debenture Stock at 132%. Banks have been tolerably brisk, dealings taking place in National Bank of Wales at 17% in South Wales Unions at 11& and 11% in London and Provincial Shares at 20 and in City Bank Shares at 20%. /4' Central Graving Dock Shares have beery negotiated at 55. At the annual meeting of the Cardiff Pilotage Board which was held to-day, under the presi- dency of Mr J. H. Wilson, the annual report and statement of accounts were presented and dis- cussed. The other members present were Coun- cillor W. J. Trounce, Capt. Pengelly, F. J. Beavan, E. Handcock, jun., E. T. Morse, W. Jenkins, and T. Evans (secretary). The usual business of electing a chairman and vice-chair- man for the ensuing year was proceeded with, and Mr J. H. Wilson and the deputy chairman (Captain Pengelly) having been thanked for their services during the past twelve months, were re-elected to their respective offices. The report which was presented was of more than ordinary interest since it dis- closed the fact that during the past year there had been a falling off in the earnings of Cardiff pilots of from £1,000 to £1,500 as compared with the previous year. As the rate of payment for pilotage services is in accordance to tonnage, this fact would seem to point to one of two things—either that regular steamers that are constantly entering and leaving the port dispense with the services of pilots, or that the total entry of vessels into Cardiff is falling off. The matter is one that would be interesting to in- quire into further. Of course, it is well known that a good many pilots who formally conducted vessels into Cardiff are now engaged almost entirely at Barry, and thus while the tonnage returns of the port of Cardiff show no falling off, the diminution in receipts above- mentioned indicates that the number of bottoms entering Cardiff alone cannct be increasing. Mr Percy Powell, Dock-street, Newport, has brought out special oireular dealing with local breweries, with particulars as to tho position and prospect of each judged by recent dividends. Messrs George Hobden and Co., who have re- moved from Mount Stuart-square to Bute-street, Docks, have issued the following summarised report :— Local markets are still dull. The withdrawal of the Barry Bill appears to be considered favour- able. There are inquiries for the New Stock, and the market is decidedly hardening. Taffs are out of favour, and we hear that the knowing ones are selling out, but cannot vouch for this being truo. Rhonddas are dull. Rhymney Ordinary have risen 1 per cent. during the week. The Barry shipments last week total 88,000 odd tons. Banks have been fairly active. We said some week ago that South Wales Unions should not be lost sight of as an investment; we now repeat same. The tendency of banking houses is that of amalgamation. A fair business has been done in coal shares. Penrikyber dividend is considered unsatisfactory. North's Collieries report has been anxiously awaited. Miscellaneous shares have ruled fairly firm. Ii> The Taft Vale Railway receipts for last week were £14,684, as compared with £12,680 in the corresponding week of last year, being an increase of £ 2,004. On passengers and parcels there was a decrease of £ 540, but on merchandise and minerals an increase of £ 2,544. The aggregate for the ten weeks to date is £ 135,118, as compared with £ 137,832 for the corresponding period of last year, or a decrease of £ 2,714. There are now sbllers of Ebbw Vale Shares at 3% International Coal Shares Pcntypridd Gas Shares Great Western Ordinary Stock Barry Allotments at 90 premium Barry Second Pre- ference Stock at 136 Brecon and Merthyr B Debenture Stock North's Ordinary Shares at 2%. There are now buyers of Barry Second and Third Preference Shares Central Graving Docks D. Davis and Sons Shares Spillers and Bakers Thompson and Shackell's Ordinary Rhondda and Swansea Bay Ordinary Bland's Shares, at 15s; Barry Allotments; Cardiff Junction Dry Docks.

CARDIFF EXCHANGE.
CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, TUESDAY. The volume of business done in the steam coal trade since Monday has hardly reached the anticipations of colliery proprietors, and prices are not now quoted with that degree of firmness which characterised th., market quotations towards the close cf the past week, and to effect sales of any magnitude a slight reduction on current values in some instances has had to be conceded. The house coal trade, d-mbtless attributable to the sharp Crusty _weathw prevail- ing, remains in an active condition, and prices, 'rtiore especially ÍJr best qualities, are well main- tained. The patent fuel market continues quiet, and no improvement can be reported in coke and iron ore values. In our local freight market to-day a fair amount of activity was displayed in all depart- ments, and, with a good supply of tonnage on offer, about an average business, particularly Mediterranean way, was effected. Rates for Malta, Constantinople, Port Said, Alexandria, and the higher Mediterranean ports géncrally closed quiet. Spanish, French Bay ports, and coasting freights were steady. Wost Indian and Eastern freights were moderately firm. The following include the latest operations:— Genoa, 8s, clean terms of charter. Civita Vecchia, 8s 9d, clean terms of chartor. Sail.—Outward freights, more particularly for Monte Video and Rio Janeiro, continue steady at last figures. There was a moderate demand for Buenos Ayres, River Plate, and the Northern Brazilian ports at recent quotations. For the East and West Indies inquiry is still limited, and httle or no alteration has taken place in coasting or Mediterranean freights. Homeward chartering for this class of tonnage continues somewhat inactive. A moderately good business, however, has been effected from the west coast of America, and there is still a fair inquiry from the Burmese ports for handy vessels to load for the west and east coasts of the United Kingdom. Tho following fixtures have been reported for South Wales loading Buenos Ayres, option Boca, lSs (Anglo-Norman). Bahia, 15s 6d (Harry). Rio Janeiro, 16s (Flora). SWANSEA EXCHANGE.
SWANSEA EXCHANGE. SWANSEA, TUESDAY. There was a large attendance on 'Change to- day, there being a meeting of the tin-plate trade held previously to settle some trade questions. Pig iron ha. slightly fluctuated during the week, and has left off to-day a few pence lower than last week. This refers more particularly to the warrant thrice than to any variation in the makers' quotations. Steel Bars.—The price of steel bars remains unaltered, but in the event of any complications arising in the North which will interfere with the supply of coke to the West Coast furnaces, the price may run upward and the supply cf pig iron will be materially interfered with. Tin-plates.—There is no alteration in the quota- tions for tin-plates. The increase in the stocks is a matter of course, and the plates will naturally be held on this side as was the case bnf jre the clearing out, which took place before the McKinley tariff camo into operation. The accumulation therefore is only what might have been expected. The coal market remains quiet, and quotations for manufacturing and steam coals vary, but anthracite remains firm and unaltered. CLEVELAND IRON TRADE. -
CLEVELAND IRON TRADE. MIDDLESBROUGH, Tuesday.—The market was again in a disturbed condition owing to the suspense which prevails regarding the coal sup- plies, very little else beini talked about but the chance? of the strike, any idea regarding which is purely a- matter of opinion, as nothmg definite can be known for some days. There were hardly any sales of anything as those who had iron or fuel think it better to hold it as prices will be stronger should the strike take plac.% Warrant holdors, however, have apparently taken a view adverse to the strike, as prices have dropped 1,49d sinc) Friday, being to-day 35s 3. LADY COMMERCIALS." Lady commercial travellers are not unknown in this conntry and on the Continent. I have just been hearing (writes a London corespondent) of a young Swedish lady who manages to indulge her passion for travel and to earn a good livelihood at the saire time by travelling for a big firm of Scandinavian machinists. Her salary allows her to travel in good style, livmg at the best hotels. She has just come to London direct from Moscow, and expects shortly to start for Melbourne, all in the way of business.
