The Company has been formed for the purpose of acquiring and working the mining rights owned by the Crawshay Syndicate, Limited (in which the first seven Directors are Shareholders), in the Iron Ore Properties situate in the neighbourhood of the well-known Somorrostro district (Bilbao, Spatn), and consisting of the following :— (1) Larrea Cecilia 4 Partenencias equal 40,000 (2) Salvadora Emilia 18 da do. 180,000 (3) Carlotta 12 '0. do. 120,000 Cecilia 7-5 Jto. do. 73,000 Square welresl; 413 000 Or about equal to 102 acres in extafet. The Syndicate hold a I.ease of Eighty per cent. of the mines from the original denouncers for a peliod of fifteen years, from the 15th March, 1890, renewable for any number of like periods of fifteen years, as the Syndicate may consider desirable, but the lease is terminable by the Syndicate on its being proved that the property cannot be reasonably or remuneratively worked. The Royalty is five reals per 1016 kilogrammes, equal to about one shilling per ton of Iron Ore, payable quarterly, with a minimum quantity of 10,000 tons per annum. Considerable works of investigation have been in progress revealing an extensive deposit of mineral, of the well-known "Rubio Avenado" quality. The property lias been inspected and ported upon by Messrs Forster Brown and Rees, the eminent Mining Engineers, of Cardiff and London. The following, extracted from their exhaustive report, dated 24th October, 1891, will serve to illustrate the more salient points of interest to the Company. „„ EXTRACTS. ho far as can be seen by explorations made by the syndicate, and from the working of adjoining mine oj^'ers, there are three lodes, or veins, of brown Haematite Iron Ore traversing the ^property, viz. :— The Carlotta Vein, the Modesta, Vein, and the Santa ReginaVem.' The Santa Regina Vein is the which has had devoted to it the principal attention of the Syndicate, and it is upon this vein that the trials and explorations bave chiefly been made. This was in consequence of the openings upon the vein in the adjoining Santa Regina mine, south of the Larrea. Cecilia, and the Demasia of the Larrea Cecilia, and from which the vein obtains its name." At tbe Santa Regina Mine, four galleries or tiers of workings have been opened uponilbis vein, giving a total depth of deposit of 260 feet, the vein still showing its full widtn in the floor of the bottom gallery. Taking these galleries from top to bottom would give an average width of 7 metres for total height of about T9'2 metres." The„ ore in these galleries appeared of good quality. "The crop of the vein can be traced over the sur- face, although affectedlyya.- r&IW.-fc? the south-west corner of the Larrea Cecilia. mine where the Syndicate have put down a bore hole, wholly in ore to a depth of 20 metres, and this hole left off in ore. A pit has been sunk on the site of this bore-hole, about seven metres deep, showing the ore to be of good quality. For about 40 metres to the north the crop can be traced from the last-mentioned point, then for about 100 metres there is no visible indication of the crop, although the vein undoubtedly exists but after passing this short blank the crop is again distinctly V1&lble. passing northwards through the Demasia of the Larrea. Cecilia, for a length of nearly 300 metres, where the crop of the vein obliquely intersects the boundary line between the Demasia of the Larrea Cecilia and the Teresa mines, the latter lying to the west of the former. For about 100 metres the crop crosses the ground belonging to the Teresa mine, and thenCpasses again to the Demasia of the Larrea Cecilia, 'jfear where the crop first crosses the boundary the Syndicate have put down a bore hole No. 6, which struck ore at 8*16 metres from the surface." This hole was continued through ore to a thickness of 36'41 metres, when it evidently struck the under wall of the vein which here has an inclination to the eastward, and, consequently, the lode does not lie in a perpendicular position." In close proximity to this borehole a shaft, 1.70 metres long, by one metre wide, has been sunk. This shaft struck ore at a depth of 4% metres, and is down a total depth of 25% metres, wholly in ore, the mineral still being in the bottom. We inspected this shaft, and took samples of the ore for analysis." From the bottom of the shaft a. beading has been driven to the west, 1% metres to the boundary, where it was stopped in ore, and to the east 8 metres to the upper wall of the vein. The vein would therefore have a width of at least, from the Western Boundary of the property, of 11.2 metres." In estimating the quantity of mineral underlying the syndicate property, we think it will be wise not to take into account any ore that may be proved and found in the Carlotta and Modesta Veins, as we con- sider that they have not been sufficienty explored. The estimate will therefore be confined to the Santa. Regina Vein." This vein we think may be assumed to run through the property (as it appears to exist with great regu- larity) for a distance of 700 metres, and we think thatit would be safe to estimate an average width of 7 metres as proved in the Santa Regina Mine. As to depth of ore, a total depth of 80 metres can be seen at Santa Regina." We therefore have 700 x 7 x 80 equals 392,000 C metres, and it is fair we think to estimate that there will be 2% tons to the cubic metre of 980,000 tons of which 80 per cent. or 780,000 tons belong to the Syndi- We have had the samples of ore taken by us as AtiSre lndlcated analysed by Messrs R. Jhe lowest price for many years has not been below about seven shillines ton, and the present cannot by anymeans be considered an inflated state of the market. Jhe lowest price for many years has not been below about seven shillines per ton." Taking an average output of ore available for sale by the Syndicate of 30,000 tons a. year, a. working cost of five shillings and sixpence per ton free on board and a selling price of eight shillings per ton, the Syndi- cate would receive a nroflt of two shillings and six- pence per ton, or a year for twenty-six years from the Santa, Regina Vein alone. II We think that a capital of £19,000 would be suffi- cient to open and develope the mines, and would leave a sufficient margin for working capital and for contin- gencies." With the capital named we have every confidence that the working of the mineral resources of the pro- perty will realize the results indicated. (Signed) FORSTER BROWN REES. Cardiff, 24tn October, 189L Estimating the output of the mines at not exceeding the quantity indicated by Messrs Forster Brown and Rees, there is by their figures from the one vein alone sufficient to pay 18% per cent. on the whole of the capital of the Company, but there is every prospect that a large increase upon the estimated output will be realised, this will. it is hoped, tend to handsomely augment the dividend, and that quite independently of any profit which may hereafter be derived from the Carlotta and Modesta Veins. The following mines in the neighbourhood of Bilbao have been very successful, as appears^ fr°m the follow- ing particulars extracted from Burdetrs Official Intel- ligence, showing some of the profits :— The somorrostro Iron Ore Co., Ld. Rubro Iron Ore from its excellence for the manu- facture of steel, and its behaviour in the blast furnace is in increasing demand, not only in the United King- dom but in Germany Belgium, France, and the United States. The Bilbao Maritimo y Commercial Revista Seminal" of 10th Januarv, 1891, gives the exports of Iron Ore from Bilbao in 1879 as 1,117,836 tons, by 1890 it shows the trade had steadily de- veloped to 4,372,918 tons, nevertheless, it is believed Iron Masters find great difficulty in obtaining an adequate supply of suitable ore. It must be admitted a practically unlimited demand is likely to permanently exist for mineral for the best class of Iron and Steel, and as there is evidence of the exhaustion of the better qualities of ore at Bilbao, the prospects of fair market prices for the output of the Companies' mines may be well assured. Mr Josiah T. Smith, President of the British Iron Trades Associa- tion, in dealing with the Iron Ore Resources of Spain," in his paper read before the Association in May, 1889, summing up the probable quantities avail- able states :—" This would meet the present demand along with the ores of Somorrostro for perhaps 20 years. That, however, although so remote as to get rid of any immediate apprehension of an ore famine, is not a long period in the history of an industry like the Iron Trade, and if the consumption of ores of this descrip- tion should increase, there is the prospect of a material reduction in the life of the Bilbao Ores." Alternative routes offer for the transport of the mineral from the mines to the place of shipment. (1) By the inclines already at work from adjacent mines to the Cadagua Railway. (2) By means of the private railway of the Luchana Mining Company, Limited. The latter is preferred by the Engineers as connect- ing the mines direct with the Shipping Wharf. The communication with the Regato depot of the Luchana Company's Railway being obtained by the erection of an Incline and an Aerial Tramway. Very little time need be expended in the erection of the Aerial Tramway, and in getting the mines into full working order. The price to be paid the Vendors for their property is £6,000 payable £2,000 in cash and £4,000 in fully paid-up shares. The Vendors pay the preliminary expenses of the Company up to the date of allotment. The only agreement entered into is one between the Crawshay Syndicate, Limited, and Richard Henry March, on behalf of the Company, dated the twenty- second day of February, 1892. The same, together with the Engineer's Report, Memorandum and Articles of Association, and plans of the mines can be seen at the Offices of the Company.
