On Sunday, the 14th December inst., the heavy gale which swept over Newyort blew down a building in course of erection by Mr Richards in Commercial- street. the upper wails of which fell upon and de- molished the premises of Mr Gillard and Mr Shewring immediately adjoining on each side. The families of the occupiers, in all eight persons, were injured, in some cases very seriously, and as the stock-in-trade, furniture, and other effects of the parties named 1Mve been destroyed, as well as a large cortion of the new building itself, the loss and damage being irrecoverable f om any source, such as insurance, is of a most dis- tressing character. A town's meeting has, ther fo. e, been held, under the presidency f his Worship the Mayor, for the purpose of sta ling a public fun i for the relief of the sufierers in this calamity, and a com- mittee ap ointed to receive contribution- and to deal with the distribution of such fund. As the circum- stances of the case, particularly when one bears in mind the season of the year, are of a painful and urgent nature, the committee earnestly appeal to their fellow-townsmen and the inhabitants of the surround- ing district for a practical expression of their sym- pathy. Sums amounting to about £ 250 had already been given or promised prior to the above meeting, and this now forms the nucleus of the general fund. Subscriptions may be paid into any of the Newport Banks, or direct to the Honorary Treasurer, Henry John Davis, Esq., Mayor of the Borough, and tho same will be acknowledged through the Press or direct by post.
