« GUYFAWKES" DAY AT NEWPORT. At Newport borough police-court, yesterday— before Messrs H. Phillips and H. A. Huzzey magistrates—Henry Williams, coachman to M: Simpkins, Llanhennock Vicarase, was summoned for furious driving. Detective Jamei stated that he saw the defendant riding a horse at a furious rate at the bottom of High-street and Commercial street last night. There was a large crowd III front of the Westgate Hotel witnessing the dis. charge of fireworks, the Westgate being the centre of attraction on the 5th." At the botton: of High-street the horse dashed into the orowd, and two women were knocked down.—Ann Dut field, an elderly woman, who appeared with hei face frightfully bruised, told the Court that she heard no warning before she was knocked down. Her arm and side were severelj bruised. Esther Mills, daughter of the !asS witness, who was also knocked down, naa her leg injured, and now limped into the witness-box. Inspector Jones stated that when he stopped the defendant he was perfectly sober, and in answer to the complaints said that the horse was startled by the fireworks, one of the crackers being, thrown over the animal's head, and the horsd bolted. Mr Frank Lewis, solicitor for the defendant, now repeated tb's statement, and added that Mr Simp- kins was not aware cf the state of the Newport streets when he despatched the defendant to town.—The Magis- trates' Clerk said the discharge of fireworks in the streets was dangerous, and might have had serious results.—Mr Huzzey said it was not for a horse; to be taken past the Westgate last night.—The Bench considered there was nc evidence as to furious driving, and dismissed the case.—Head Constable Sinclair informed the Court that the town was quieter last night than for a number of years.
