In our local freight market to-day a. moderate amount of activity was noticeable in all depart- ments, and, with a fair supply of tonnage on offer, the volume of business enacted was well up to the average of the past few weeks. THE WEATHER AND THE CROPS.
THE WEATHER AND THE CROPS. [FROM MONDAY S MARK LANE EXPRESS."] The promise of the growing wheat is not so encouraging as it was just after the winter, and a late ciry May would put the prospects of a good yield into the background. The English wheat averag-e has not stood so high as 39s since the end of 1383; and the quotations published on the 28th have attracted general notice. Farmers, unfor- tunately, are not able to rejoice quite so freely as their friends might wish. The English local markets have been firm all through the week. The spring corn trade has advanced prices for almost all sorts of feeding stuffs. Maize made 338 in London during the week for American new corn, and at small markets little maize is now obtainable under 35s per qr. Barley is Is to Is 6d dearer on the week for grind- ing sorts, but with 179,000 qrs. on passage agamsfj 211,000 qrs. there is no room for a price rise com- mensurate with that on maize. Oats are held at Is more money, but stocks are considerable, and improvement meets with resistance. Beans and peas are also Is dearer.
THE AFFAIRS OF A LLANDOVERY…
THE AFFAIRS OF A LLANDOVERY MERCHANT. The public examination of Dan Davies, flour merchant and grocer, Llandovery and Llanwrtyd Wells, was resumed before Mr Registrar Thomas Parkinson, in the Slnre-hall, Carmarthen, on Saturday. Mr T. Thomas, official receiver, represented the Board of Trade Mr H. Brunei White watched the debtor's interests on behalf of Mr Phillips, Llandovery; Mr James John was for a bill of sale holder and Mr J. D. Valentine Jones, Swansea, was for creditors. Debtor's gross liabilities, mentioned in his statement of affairs, amounted to £ 1,046 19s 9d expected to rank, £ 931 8s ld deficiency, £ 682 10s lid. On February 27th last he gave a bill of sale upon ths whole of his effects. The examination had been adjourned :so that he should furnish a trading account for the six months prior to filing his petition. The Official Receiver (to debtor): You admit that you h:we not looked after your business as you ought to have done ? Debtor Not in one sense. You say you lost when you were travelling and whilst at Llanwrtyd. Had you not other reasons for going from home Yes, at tiniea, sir. Do answer straightforwardly. You were con. stantly from home football playing?—Not con. stantly. I went away sometimes. The Registrar Now, sir, let us have a straight- forward answer. During the football season, which extends for about six months, how many times were you football playing?—Once a week. And duriug those days you were robbed ?—Yes. The Official Receiver: VV ere you captain of a football team?—Yes. Then you were away from the town for a whole day_ together sometimes 1—Yes. You had to bear the expense of being away?— My own expenses. Were you in the habit of treating on those occasions"'—In what way ? lhe Registrar It is no use quibbling in that way, as if you don't know what the official receiver means. T!ia .i D _• T Tl.r- {"),æ"n1 D _• T rr..& xirc umuiai iveceiver o use so. That's a. most unsatisfactory part of the business. Were you not in the habit of standing your teams treats when from home ?-I used to give them a, drink now and then. Have you not been in the habit of standing dinners as well?—No. You mean to say that?—Yes. Nor luncheons ?—No. Then have you nothing else to say that would account for this J680 défieiency ?-I put down in my account Lio too little for medical, and fIC too little for legal expenses. Then how about the other £ 60 ?—I have lost £ 25 in buying butter, sugar, and flour. That makes £45. Where has the other L35 gone to?—I don't know. What were the remittances you made to the lady florist for '—For flowers. Did you supply your customers with flowers?- Yes. ^ou kept no ledger showing how you stood witii your creditors ?—No; enly one showing how 1 stood with my debtors. And you admit that your books were not posted icr about 18 months previous toyoul tiling your petition "'—Yes. Would it net have been bettar if you had stopped at home to post up your books instead of going footballing ?—It would have been, sir. By Mr V. Jones I have had a lot to do with a cricket club. I spent as much time with it aa with the football club. The Registrar agreed to unconditionally ad-- journ the examination for a fortnight; and Mi White said that the accountant of the official receiver should, in the meantime, be furnished with all the information desired.
